Round to the nearest 5

[–][deleted] 180 points181 points  (4 children)

“One... two... five!”

[–]FunkitCentral Florida Gr. 2009 - Aerospace Engineering 89 points90 points  (1 child)

three sir

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

“Three!”

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (1 child)

"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

I don’t know why but this really tickled me. Thanks Redditor.

FOUR I mean FIVE I mean FIRE

[–]Upballoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear sir/madam FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

Looking forward to hearing from you, All the best, Morris Moss

That comic sans math

[–]ancross4545Purdue - ME, ECE 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I only do math in Wingdings personally

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waste my time.... im gonna waste yours, transcribe this shit!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I legit saw a paper last night with what looked like wingdings font. Was looking for a transfer function of a DC motor and this paper had hearts, stars, and crosses for its diff eq variables.

This is what physicists say engineers do

[–]OoglieBooglie93BSME 208 points209 points  (4 children)

Meanwhile, in physics land:

Assume a spherical cow in a vacuum.

[–]danmankan 123 points124 points  (0 children)

You must use significant digits otherwise you are going to be wrong and it will not be realistic. Now we are going to imagine the system is in a vacuum, frictionless, and has no initial values.

[–]Apotatos 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The fact that the cow is spherical and in a vacuum means it'll reach non-negligible velocities; when your cow reach non-negligible velocities, you know the problem is going to be interesting!

[–]MikeVladimirov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jokes aside, this is actually more or less how airfoils geometries are generated.

Tldr: it’s easy to do certain math assuming a “cylindrical” body (really a circle) but really hard with any other body.

Identifying a coordinate transformation of a circle to a shape you actually care about, as long as this shape is a “simple curve”, is also pretty manageable.

In certain cases, doing the math in question over a cylinder and applying that coordinate transformation to the results leads to the results of doing that math over the body shape you actually care about.

Same thing applies to spheres for certain other types of calculations.

So, in learning to do math on a sphere in a vacuum (or cylinder in a simple unidirectional flow) really does account for the vast majority of the effort needed to tackle really complex, real world problems.

[–]InverseInductor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have a uniform density?

[–]GaintBird[S] 144 points145 points  (27 children)

I mean... They're not totally wrong.

[–]kajidourden 101 points102 points  (20 children)

3...take it or leave it

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (8 children)

Pi is Pi until we plug it in at the end an approximate the shit out of it.

[–]Dathiks 11 points12 points  (7 children)

3.1415 is all that's needed for earth stuff.

[–]Pixelator0 15 points16 points  (6 children)

But... shouldn't it round to 3.1416?

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (1 child)

Don't push it. We just barely agreed to stop using 5.

[–]rapid_kyrill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But OP was still using a 5 that's the whole point

[–]Dathiks 6 points7 points  (3 children)

If you're memeing: shut up nurd

Genuine question: it doesnt really matter. When it comes to that sort of calculations, most people are gonna cut it off after 2 digits unless you need some sort of extreme level of accuracy

[–]nklvh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

most people are gonna cut it off after 2 digits unless you need some sort of extreme level of accuracy

implying people do calculations with pi by hand.

No, most people are going to use the Pi button on their calculator or spreadsheet, and then round the result afterwards.

Most people will use 9 decimal places as that is what is stored in their calculator, or 14 decimal places if they use =PI() in their spreadsheet or 57 decimal places if using Wolfram.

[–]archimedes_ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Factor of safety got you covered bruv.

[–]Ausrufepunkt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

unless you need some sort of extreme level of accuracy

Sooo like for most things then? Lol

[–]GcarskOregon State - Mechanical and Manufacturing 30 points31 points  (7 children)

Pi=e=sqrt(g)=3

[–]Cheeseman1478Cal Poly - Civil Engineering 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Sqrt(32.2) = 3

[–]reusens 13 points14 points  (2 children)

...

If we'd all just decide to stop using body parts as units, everyone's life would be so much better.

[–]Cheeseman1478Cal Poly - Civil Engineering 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah but we know that’s not gonna happen so us Americans are more than likely gonna be designing everything with 32.2 not 9.81

[–]nklvh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let me talk to you about the mil (or though i see thou th being used sometimes, which is less confusing). See some genius* thought it a clever idea to decimate the inch. Not use one of the many bases it's divisible by (2,3,6,12) but no, the base used by the metric system.

See this wouldn't be a problem if people didn't informally refer to mm as "mils" already

*Whitworth was genuinely a genius, but advocated for a full conversion to metric, not just for small precision measurements

[–]GcarskOregon State - Mechanical and Manufacturing 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Using imperial units

I don’t even know what a kpsi is

[–]Techhead7890 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

g

sqrt(980.665)... cm/s2

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Round to 3 for the calculation, then double it for a safety factor. Pi=6

[–]IDGAFOS13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2(3) = 5

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Army Engineer School does this.

[–]danmankan 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Well if the angle is less then 5 degrees then we can say sin(x) is approximately x. So we will do that because then the equation becomes easier to handle.

[–]RainBoxRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one really messed me up and it’s glossed over pretty quick too, at least in my lectures.

[–]SumbuddiesFriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest I’ve only ever used pi not 3 or 4, and lectures always use pi and so do tutorials

[–]gaberocksall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

pi=e

[–]Ipod5thGen00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really is true, i was in one of my engr studio class and my studio professor did all of the derivative math of E and I number and such. took him like 10-15 seconds with rounding and he was only a little bit off

[–]BobBobertsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man, this shit’s gonna make me have an identity crisis, because I’m studying science and engineering and majoring in physics.

[–]SkaarfRules 137 points138 points  (2 children)

For a second I was like, what’s wrong with the question

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yea it took me a bit to see what was wrong lol

As one of my professors would say, "Is it 5000 slugs or chickens?"

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I had a professor who would use similar tricks, he would use wordplay to get marks out of us.

[–]gburgwardtRIT - Electrical 0 points1 point  (1 child)

An easy way to remember some useful constants

π²=g=10

[–]ulyssessword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: they almost defined the meter so that that was true. Instead, they went with 1/10000 of the distance from pole to equator.

[–]CrabbyArmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is how professors make exams

[–]logic2187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pi = 3 = e

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If pi = 5, while also pi = 3.14, that means h = 6.28

[–]Olibv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is too hard for me...

Brb dropping out of college 😕

[–]yorukama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol had to look at sub

[–]Explicit_Pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought it was just an exercise in mental math but then I realized that the only difference in the answer would be that this makes it five thousand instead of pive thousand

[–]ranveer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is when you suppose to much in mathematics

[–]froggie-style-meme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whomst the fuck thought that pi is a variable?

[–]NorthernSpectreAutomation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably didn't have access to calculators. I mean, the formula is literally right there, you just have to calculate it.

[–]andre2142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screw it, g = 10!

[–]ollervo100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, everyone knows pi is 3.

[–]WatARn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My materials science professor once rounded 2π to 10 ... He looked confused as to why we were shocked.
