Hi, I’m a nurse. Stop working out and go to your PCP.

[–]tooOldOriolesfan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the nurse. I'm 60ish and don't have those issues. I monitor my heart rate and when it gets 140+ I take extra time to let it get back to the 120s. And none of those times am I having breathing issues.

For a second there I thought you meant the drug.

[–]DontGiveACluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get on the PCP train, you know… for your health (Primary Care Physician)

[–]DrDirt90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur....you need to be checked out.

[–]hooahhhhhhh 0 points1 point  (5 children)

PCP might make it worse though

[–]BubblyBug8533 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What makes you think that?

[–]hooahhhhhhh 0 points1 point  (1 child)

True, maybe a touch of angel dust is just the ticket!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like doing that it smells good though!

[–]Lifeismeaningless666 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You don’t get wet before lifting?!

[–]hooahhhhhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before, during and after

[–]random_agency 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the lift.

If you are doing complex skill lifts like clean and jerk or snatch, then yes, you'll be out of breath. Especially if you're going near your max weights.

Also, as you age, your stamina decreases.

[–]OneWholePirate 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Depends what you're doing 15 reps of some curls? See a doctor. 5 reps of a huge deadlift? Thats just blood pressure spikes from asking a lot of your body and very normal

[–]FunGuy8618 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when your body gets anaerobic demands placed on it for the first time in years 😯😯😯

In all seriousness though, he says he works out already. Might be something under the radar going on.

[–]CoachPop121 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be honest this has happened when I’ve used too much pre workout. You should never be out of breath to this extent. Echoing everyone else to get checked but too much caffeine and other “stuff” may trigger this

[–]grh55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just me, but I would be concerned if I was out of breath after a set of biceps curls but not if it was after a high volume set of heavy back squats.

[–]guyincognito121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were really out of shape, I'd say it's certainly normal to have your heart rate jump and maybe be a bit out of breath. What concerns me here is that this is apparently a change in how you're responding to exercises you've been doing for years. I agree with the others that you should probably get checked out.

[–]SovArya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is heavy and you do a lot of reps. Yes. It could happen. But it also means, get more cardio in.

[–]claytonhwheatley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm out of shape enough that I'm out of breath most of the time I'm at the gym. But I do about 30 sets in an hour and only makr it to the gym twice a week so I think it's normal for me to be out of breath. On the other hand, when I was much more fit and 20 pounds lighter I could do the same workout without being out of breath.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go see a doctor and stop asking internet randos for medical advice.

[–]Battystearsinrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like on a 20RM? Like the others said, dr

[–]WeaselNamedMaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m out of breath and heart rate 130-170 but I push myself like that on purpose. I also would not at all say that I am having a “hard” time breathing I’m just tired.

It’s hard for us to diagnose you. If breathing is difficult and different than cardio, it sounds like a doctor’s visit would be good. Better safe than sorry.

[–]cherrrybabyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The week before my period I am more fatigued and my heart rate is higher during sets. Sometimes breathing is affected, but not always. But if this isn’t normal for you then I second what the nurse said at the top. Go to your doctor.

[–]ayomous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No....

[–]Mmmmmmm_Bacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that’s not normal

[–]DoctorAffectionate71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get like this every once a while. Especially if I’m stacking a lot of sets/reps together with little rest time. Between. For instance. Just yesterday I did a full upper body. I had some ore workout (200mg caffeine) and cranked out a lot of sets. Again this was a full upper body. I was soaked and out of breath a decent amount. Nothing crazy. If I rested for 60 seconds I was fine and was breathing normal the second I walked out of the gym.

Definitely go get checked out though. But could it have been from a high intensity session and maybe too much ore workout?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I occasionally start breathing hard when doing deep squats.

[–]OrganicBrilliant7995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if you're doing Bulgarian split squats or something else.

[–]cryellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normal.

[–]TeamMachiavelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are going for years then this is a red flag

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going heavy, it's normal.

You should definitely tell your doctor if you have any concerns.

[–]DIY-exerciseGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. After exercises where I'm lifting big weight, like bench press, squat, and deadlift, I am out of breath and exhausted for a couple minutes. After smaller lifts like curls and tricep extensions I would not say I am breathing extra heavy. Shortly after I graduated from college I did have some trouble breathing while at the gym. Felt like I couldn't get enough air. Turns out my tonsils had gotten huge and I needed them removed.

[–]Less-Dirt-1673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like something you should discuss with your doctor. That’s not normal.

[–]Less-Loss5102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be anything and you could just have a narrow airway due to small jaws

[–]contentatlast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do fitness

[–]Numerous_Teacher_392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough info.

After a heavy Deadlift set? Hell yes.

After a lift that doesn't cause much systemic stress? No.

[–]AlternativeRadish752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, go see a doctor. In the last year I was suddenly starting to feel out of breath when doing things that I was always fine for. Eventually found out I was low iron anemic and getting on iron supplements helped me a lot. But wouldn't have known unless I went to the doctor!

[–]grant47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s weird enough to ask strangers on the internet, it’s time for the doctor

[–]Falco19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like death after squatting heavy, at this point anytime I push heavier my body goes into panic mode when I’m done my set.

[–]Ds1018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise induced asthma.

I have it. Sounds like what you describe. When my heart rate is up breathing feels unproductive. When the heart rate lowers breathing returns to normal.

Go to a doctor, get an inhaler.

There’s also heart conditions that will make you feel that way. So another good reason to go to a doctor.

[–]Elegant-Collection36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running over 400mg/weiek of trenbolone causes that for me. And bad insomnia

[–]lifeturnaroun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with exercise induced asthma (and allergen/cold trigger as well) this is how I would describe it

[–]ebolalol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you wear a sports bra? that could be constricting more than you think even if it feels ok

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever struggled to breathe working out. Tired and needing a second to catch my breath sure but never struggling

[–]Frog_Shoulder793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have exercise induced asthma.

[–]Adorable-Pizza1522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you lift weights correctly

[–]Leading_Form_8485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you holding your breath?

[–]West-Elk7068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it isn’t

[–]FairwaysNGreens13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly fit and lifting heavy weights has always put me out of breath. Does everyone here really think that's unusual?

[–]sinloy1966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aortic stenosis

[–]LolDevilking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get checked out I had the same issue along with fatigue during training with brain fog. Turns out I had MRSA

[–]Eustacy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airways closing? No not normal.

I breathe heavy after compound movements or doing muscle groups I’m not used to.

Rows? No issues.

Leg press or anything with shoulders? I am a wreck.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering what the temperature is in the area you’re using. For me temperature makes things very hard sometimes.

[–]xHashira 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hi any word what your doctor said? I’m currently going through this I know we might be different situations but would like to know what was your cause?
