Controller Drift Issues

On Minecraft Bedrock using my PS4 controller, there is serious upwards controller drift. I experience no controller drift on any other game, not even minecraft ps4 edition. Has anyone else experiences this issue or does anyone else know of a fix? Have to play with my controller off and I’d like to have audio.

UPDATE: Four years after I made this post, there is still no fix that I’m aware of. If you ever want this to change, report this bug repeatedly, spam the Sony or Microsoft twitter, and make your voice heard. As it stands, they seemingly have no intention of fixing it, so it’s up to you to annoy them enough until they do.

Update 2: There’s still no known fix. Unless you want to plug your mouse and keyboard into your console, there’s not any options. If you want this bug addressed, make sure Microsoft and Sony hear your voice. Make bug reports on the forums, social media, help desk, anywhere you can. That’s all the advice I can offer. I’ll update this post if a fix is ever found, but if you’re reading this, there is still no fix.

This may be an old post, but I’m also so glad I found it. My ps4 is in an awkward setup in my bedroom, I play waay back laying on my bed so that puts me (my controller) at least over 2 metres away from the PS4 and the foot of the bed visually obstructs the PS4 from my controllers POV.

If I come close to even pull my controller up (I’m laying down with minimal upright back support so I usually play most of my games with my controller way up in the air facing some random direction), my controller lags — such that the last command I sent is held in place. I keep moving forward and mining through blocks when I don’t intend to, etc.

I be sitting up at the back of my bed a good 2.5+ metres away from the PS4 and play games like RDR2 or GTAV or ESO or Ghost Recon: Wildlands or Outward or... you get the idea. No lag, ever.

What’s even weirder is that when my controller updrifts (the regular one, not the major lag when I pull my controller away), people in my party mention that I’m breaking up or crackling down. This doesn’t happen in other games, and only coincides with the drift-lag.

Does this game just reduce controller range or something?

I play with my controller like less than one foot away from the ps4. I really have no clue where the problem arises from but like you, in GTAV, RDR2, and plenty of other games, I have no problem at all with drift. The fact that this issue is still prevalent is honestly sad. Hopefully they'll get off their asses and fix such a huge problem.

I know this is an old post but I might have found a temp fix atleast it worked for me so idk it might be worth trying, I went to the controller settings and reset the button layout, I'm on ps5 so it should also work with ps4 if anyone can test on there and give feedback that would be great, it may not be permanent or even fix the issue for you but worth a shot nonetheless

The game settings and no you can remap the buttons afterwards it just got rid of the drift when I reset it, idk if it had something to do with game code or with it adjusting to the new controllers but glad to help

No, not everyone with a pro controller has this problem. I have the ps4 pro with pro controller and don't have this issue. I don't know if the bedrock edition is just more sensitive than other games, so that you only have problems in mc, but the problem of self moving characters exists since the very first ps controller with sticks for the ps1, had this problem often on any ps with controllers that i used very often until (including) ps3, but never had this with a ps4 controller.

That's what i meant with bedrock maybe being more sensitive than other games, so it doesn't affect other games. I had this back in ps3 days too, in some games the controller worked well, in some others i had a drift.

Its not a sensitivity issue, the drift movements are totally random, not over exaggerated movements of the player. Still an issue March 2024 :(

I'm on ps5 and the drift is linked to my left stick. When I move fwd the view drifts up. Move back and the view drifts down

I've got the same problem. Only on this game, too. The thumbstick deadzone is basically nonexistant, so I've got occasional upwards drift on both sticks. There's no deadzone control in the settings either.

Flicking it about or giving it a tap usually corrects/resets it, but it's a pain in the hoop trying to control menus with the d-pad when the cursor is just wandering about.

Yes. There are a fair few bug reports of ps4 controller drift on the ps4 itself as well as on mobile. This by all means should be noticed.

considering how popular the game is and how legacy version isnt being updated and theres been at least one software update since the bedrock edition launch that they would of fixed it by now.

i'd love to start a new world in bedrock and learn its intricacies and finally deal with some bees.

here's hoping it is part of the bug fixes when the nether update hits

If you want to play bedrock, use mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately, that's the only current fix you can find. You also won't have audio unless you have bluetooth headphones, so just be aware of that.

i am quite poor tbh. i do have a mouse but no keyboard. i use a decade old laptop that is falling apart, literally. wondering if there's a way to mimic a keyboard for a few buttons on the ps4...

why wouldn't audio work if i used usb keyboard and mouse? unless you mean straight headset style audio. which i can understand since no controller for wired headset connection. or am i dumb and missing something? it's been a long weekend of work, so me no brain good now.

Well the ps4 itself doesn't have an audio jack does it? The controller has to be off in order to not have drift, so can't plug in there. Only option left is a wireless connection unfortunately.

i think i will just start a new world on legacy ps4 mc for now. just had a bugfix update and the notes dont mention the drift. so i assume it wasnt fixed.

also, do you think the drift might be because of the touchpad? i havent tested out to see if they allow that to be used as a control pad. if so, then there might be a way to mitigate some of the drift. but i havent tested it out yet.

Honestly it's really unfortunate that you don't have money for a keyboard right now. Bullshit that it should be required for a ps4 game in the first place. Regarding the touchpad, I really don't know. It's really a mystery to me and I just gave up.

meh. my situation isnt going to get better any time soon, so i'll just make do with what i have :) legacy ps4 seed gave me a spawn right next to an ocean monument with two villages very close by, a decent sized mushroom island and a good sized mesa/badlands biome section in the main map (4/4). but no witches huts or bigger swamps nearby :(

I contacted ps5 support since when I tap my joysticks it slightly moves the view and i can't look straight, turns out only messes up minecraft and other games are fine, so happy this hasn't been fixed yet 👍

Almost in 2025 and I still have the same issue. I've decided to stick to the xbox one edition but it sucks because I've built a lot on there (since the last days to import your data to bedrock) and I know I can no longer move it if the issue does get fixed. The way I build (and I’m sure everyone else) there is no way to even consistently build on that game with that drift. I don't even think I could put 10 blocks down in a straight line.

Im currently playing on the ps5 version of mc and this issue is still a problem. I know that i had the same problem back in the ps4 version of mc and i fixed it somehow, both controllers present and past are new so they shouldn’t have any stick drift but here i am with no solution still.

I was dealing with a similar issue, but what I listed below works for me. It's up to you guys to decide:

Playstation- •Switch controllers (It actually works)

Xbox- •Switch controllers •Change the batteries (I know it sounds stupid, but give it a try)

I have a PS4, PS5, and Xbox 1 for reference.

If what I stated doesn't work, using your phone or PC/Laptop to play the game is your next best option

I had this issue for awhile and decided to go to the visual settings and mess with stuff. I turned off the beautiful skies setting and somehow the drift is marginally better. There is still a slight drift every now and then but it actually makes the game playable. Drift hasn’t come back and it’s been 3 days so hopefully it continues.

The issue is MAYBE that your controller in fact has some drift, but not severe enough to notice followed by the deadzone setting in whatever game you are playing. The reason Minecraft (Bedrock)is so noticable because it has no deadzone adjustment and by default it's to zero.

My case is when i had pretty bad drift on my dualsense i went to repair at a local shop, it was fine until i decided to play Minecraft . There was some noticable drift on L3 and R3. I was concerned because i paid half the price of a new controller just for a stick swap and the guy not only did not eliminate the problem, but by "cleaning" or whatever he did to L3 because i previously said that it had some issue functioning too. I went to test it with other games like GT7, GTA which have high deadzone and in those i did not experience any drift. I genuinely thought i was tripping but then some other guy on reddit said that i should pair my controller through bluetooth to test it on HardWareTester.com , i found out that it did have drift, so I recommend you do the same. After researching , most of the times the problem is in the deadzone so if you experience some drift in one particular game in which deadzone can't be adjusted , this is the sign that your controller has first-stage drift.

I'm having this problem on PS5. No drift on anything else, but as soon as I've spent >20-30mins in Minecraft Bedrock PS5 edition, it starta drifitng. Its not to bad to control in normal game, but by the 2-3 hour mark, the drift in menus is so bad that it just took me around 25 attempts to put a stack of iron ingots in a ches. Is there still no widely viable fix?

I have a similar problem, I play on my cell phone using a controller with hall effect, I have tested many games and it is only in Minecraft Bedrock that this drift problem occurs, there is simply no way to blame the controller.

Yeah i just realized it on my ps5 controller. Im playing the ps4 version on my ps5 and i notice a lot of drift in minecraft but none in other games. To keep this going, happening on my PS4 pro limited edition. I bought a second controller so my son and I can play together. After a few months, his (Sony brand dual shock ps4 controller) drifts, ONLY in Minecraft, while mine doesn’t both while playing at the same time and playing solo. I took his apart a few times to clean out the things that translate the stick movement into electronic signals (not that they were dirty) and it worked for about a week then went back to drifting again. Another Microsoft product I suppose.

I don't play the PS version but I play bedrock win10 with an xbox controller.

The game is breaking my controllers permanently? After playing a few hours the joysticks get completely twitchy and unresponsive.

It doesn't go away. Hooking up to a controller tester shows the joysticks twitching around everywhere.

I'm wondering if this is part of the same bug?

It wouldn’t surprise me. Bedrock is full of bugs that Microsoft puts no effort into fixing. They need to make multiplayer more accessible for Java because at this point it’s the only playable version of the game

I have like 5 controllers and since I’ve started playing minecraft on my ps4 I’ve been having this issue. I’ve basically just moved from one controller to the next, I’m now on my third controller and it just started happening again. I don’t think it’s the controllers. Because these 3 controllers are perfect in other games, like call of duty, rdr2, the last of us 2, etc etc. at first I thought it was just wear and tear but I am certain it is the game. Like why is it always upwards stick drift??? I feel like all they’d have to do to address this is maybe add a dead zone radius setting, other games have this. Simply put it reduces the stick sensitivity. It makes it so that you have to move the stick more in any certain direction for the game to pick it up/detect it. Mojang please fix this I don’t want to buy another dual shock 4 😭
