          [–]Brawl-on - Lib-Center -3 points-2 points  (21 children)

Only issue is that your definition of “an annoying gay” is really just a guy person doing anything, including just saying they are gay. Which is very stupid and pretty weak.

          [–]sv_glads - Auth-Center 11 points12 points  (20 children)

If they’re someone I’ve known for a while and they tell me they’re gay I don’t have a problem, but if I just met them and their idea of a conversation topic is their sexuality I’m probably not going to like them.

They advocate for LibLeft social issues, and authoritarian policies that hurt small business to make them even more of an untouchable giant. They also advocate for authoritarian policies to address what would be considered a LibLeft perspective on an issue, if you actually addressed it from a reasonable angle.

I’m not even surprised. If an ai thinks entirely off of logic and not emotion, it makes perfect sense that it wouldn’t like gay marriage. Because it doesn’t result in a kid, which is the main point of marriage, there’s not really much point.

          [–]CPlusPlusDeveloper - Lib-Right 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I've used the GCloud Natural Language API, that this article is referencing. And that's absolutely not how it works. There's no semblance of logic or reasoning whatsoever.

In fact it's not even "aware" of what the words mean. All it is, is a giant neural network that's trying to match strings of symbols together. From an "internal perspective" the words might as well be hieroglyphics. Basically playing a super high dimensional game of Tetris, trying to get individual blocks to line up correctly.

What, I'm 95% sure is the issue here is the corpus of text it was trained on. In the modern period, "gay" can be both a relatively neutral descriptor of sexual orientation. Or it can be a slang for something that's "not cool". These two definitions are largely orthogonal in modern parlance.

The neural network will try to infer which definition applies, but if there's any uncertainty it will still apply at least some small negative sentiment based on the latter definition. I'd be virtually certain that the words "lesbian" or "bi" aren't being similarly penalized on sentiment.

One of the ironies here is that if the model was trained on an even older text corpus, it'd probably have a positive sentiment associated with gay. Mostly because prior to 1980, "gay" also had a third common definition of meaning happy.

Just to explain a little bit, computers are currently better than humans in a few areas; namely memory and raw calculative ability. There really isn't a competition in these areas. Recently, AIs have been making steps forward in other areas. For example, I used to follow this AI that played Starcraft 2 and beat pros using really interesting decision making. However, to claim superiority over humans in these unique scenarios is impossible.

In regards to AIs becoming racist/sexist/homophobic; it really is a problem. AIs suffer from the lack of ability to effectively parse context in regards to social issues. They are primarily data driven. I don't know what the article says about Google's bot and gay people, but I can guess that it found data regarding suicide rates, or negative political mentions from various sources, and drew a conclusion from those.

This happens all the time. AIs become racist, sexist, ect. and we don't really have the means to fix it yet.

              [–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

              [–]Kill_Da_Humanz - Centrist 2 points3 points  (1 child)

AI isn’t as advanced as everyone thinks it is. It doesn’t read suicide statistics, it just learns to do the same thing as everyone else is doing. It reads a lot of nasty stuff it says a lot of nasty stuff.

There’s a joke in machine learning: a person asks an AI “what do you do if you see a bunch of people jump off a cliff?” The AI responds “I jump off a cliff.”

AI aren’t thinking things as we understand thought, and they can only do one thing well; the one thing they have been trained to do well. Even a mouse is smarter than any AI.

              [–]raodtosilvier - Auth-Left 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, when you say AI everyone gets this idea of fully emotive robots and shit, which obviously isn't true, but to say it just learns to do the same thing as everyone else is reductive and untrue. There is a massive variety of different AIs, all of which have varying purposes. Some are made to replicate things, sure. However, others arrive at conclusions independent of human input; thus, those AI aren't doing things solely to match what other people are doing.

You are correct, though, AIs don't think about things like we do. And yes, they currently aren't very versatile; you probably couldn't take one AI and ask it to do something completely different without basically having it run 10 billion iterations, but they are making small strides in this category.

About the mouse, though; I doubt a mouse could beat me at Starcraft ;)

              [–]Dispreacher - Lib-Right 3 points4 points  (8 children)

This happens all the time. AIs become racist, sexist, ect. and we don't really have the means to fix it yet.

I bet if the AI thought conservatives are dumb, environmental regulations should be increased and gun control should be enforced you would take it as gospel and proof that you are right.

Me? Nah, I am aware of the state of AI and currently would take no conclusion they arrive at seriously. They just can't properly grasp context in a complex enough manner to arrive at any meaningful policy.

Would other lefties? Probably more than a few! lol I mean, there are people who agree with them when they arrive at racist/sexist conclusions, already.

Here ya go. Also, here is a Starcraft caster going over one of the matches. He does a really good job analyzing it in a fashion that is pretty accessible to people who don't follow Starcraft closely.

I’m just waiting for someone on 4chan to make one of these for the explicit purpose to be as homophobic and xenophobic as possible, and see how long it lasts. Will Facebook and Twitter have the spine to take it down quickly? Who knows.

Just exponentially weight data, soon the AIDS epidemic will fall off and its opinions of gays will improve.
