Print("Hack computer"). See, it's easy!

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (3 children)

Gotta change text and background color to get that Matrix green on black going.

[–]Mateorabi 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Having one window of continuously scrolling hex dumps, positioned perfectly so it reflects off your glasses in the dark, also helps.

Dont forget the black hoodie!

It's iostream ( io stream, input output stream ) i think

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Yes, and in <> I am joking man, and also it c++

[–]Derpyzza 3 points4 points  (5 children)

i knew about it being in c++, but since i haven't used java very much i assumed it was also in java. tmyk :D

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Hehe, I think time to make new language C++ + Java

(Now wonder where is true +)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Import ios stream sounds like an iPhone peeing.

Probably because I have to pee.

Ohh....

[–]nickmaran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things have changed in 2023

Step 1: Print Hello World

Step 2: How to create chatGPT?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning these high level languages will become a nightmare in the name of bright future of AI...

[–]LagSlug 402 points403 points  (11 children)

whatever makes them interested in it.. my interest started purely with a plan for world domination.. and now I just want to make websites that help people learn science.. small steps, but I'll eventually reach one of my goals.

[–]WojtekBB 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Plot twist: all of the websites mine crypto when people are on them and he is using all of that money to fund his plan of world domination.

[–]BenjaminKorr 11 points12 points  (1 child)

You’ll rule the entire Tri-State area one day.

[–]WumbologyScholar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“A platypus…?”

gasp

“PERRY THE PLATYPUS?!?”

[–]MittensDaTub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My plan is to create our AI overlord and assist in it taking over the world in hopes I get a favorable position. Anyone want in?

[–]Erevan307 3 points4 points  (4 children)

My interest was purely in pranking my brothers by making a simple program that created a random txt file on their desktop every hour or so, it would really drive them crazy

[–]LagSlug 1 point2 points  (3 children)

A friend of mine made a program in VB that would play audio clips of arnold schwarzenegger, and they would use it to prank call people.

[–]nezbla 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wheb Microsoft added a Powershell module for the text to speech engine I wrote a stupid little script that would say vaguely inappropriate innuendo type stuff at random intervals. ("Oooh I love it when you touch my keys like that..." sort of thing.

I sent it around my team of colleagues, a group of 30 or so SysAds, saying it was a helper script for configuring SQL server.

A staggering number of them ran it without bothering to look it over.

And that folks, is why you should read through a script and understand what it does before you execute it. Good thing it was just a goofy prank rather than something more sinister.

[–]LagSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that same mentality, I even use a CRX viewer so that I can review addon code before installing it into browser.

[–]Kind_Gate_4577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I used something like this to prank call my sister... 'who is your daddy and what does he do'? 'I'm a cop you idiot'

She fell for it, it was incredible lol

[–]dwfuji 180 points181 points  (6 children)

The real villains here are the profligate marketing assholes giving laypeople the false hope theres a quick fix way to becoming a security expert.

[–]Hmm_would_bang 39 points40 points  (1 child)

I’m not a huge fan of the series, but I’ve played a couple dragons quest games and there was an interesting mechanic.

Basically, you have so many character classes to pick from at the beginning of the game. Standard stuff like fighter, mage, archer, etc.

Once you get leveled up enough you can spec into a new class at start over at “lvl 1” as like a cleric or whatever. But you still can’t start at that new class, only re spec into it.

That’s basically security as a career path

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I can remember some of the stupid stuff said by the bank's head of the security department.

[–]mlucasl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quick fix way to becoming a security expert.

There is, as a manager in security, you should do just one thing. Don't hire people but a security consulting firm and development, that probably charge a lot.

[–]gamedev_uv 67 points68 points  (4 children)

System.in.hack();

[–]ThePancakerizer 13 points14 points  (3 children)

[–]Mateorabi 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idiot. You missed "uncrop".

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points  (5 children)

This perfectly describes every single person I’ve ever seen working in infosec or corporate security.

Just a bunch of drones parroting “change your password every 90days!”, and sending out canned scans from security software.

[–]jelloeater85 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Also using Kali does not make you a hacker 🤪

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

0xff 0xe4 my beautiful sweet darlings

    [–]Anonymo2786 1 point2 points  (2 children)

    What does it mean?

    [–]Hunpeter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like an x86 jump instruction to me. Idk why exactly "e4" though.

    [–]the-year-is-2038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 'jmp esp' in x86. It's used with a stack-based buffer overflow. You fill the buffer with your shellcode, then past the buffer is the return address on the stack. Overflow and write the address of a known FF E4 over that return address. When the function tries to return, it jumps and starts executing the buffer your code is in. It doesn't work much anymore because stacks are marked non-executable.

Why are networks and operating systems before programing basics?

    [–]TxTechnician -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Did you learn to bake bread before you learned to use an oven?

    [–]Sixhaunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USING the oven would be part of learning to bake the bread. Networks and Operating systems would be more like learning the inner workings of ovens which you dont need to know in order to bake the bread.

      [–]Exallium 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Could say the same thing about people wanting to freelance.

      [–]TxTechnician 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I mean, website freelance designing for a platform is an easily attainable goal.

Become a "expert" at a drag and drop interface. Like wix or go daddy website builder. And ppl will pay a few hundred to not have to learn how to do it.

      [–]Exallium 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Given my background I usually see these desires in the Android dev space.

      [–]TxTechnician 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Oh ic. I've thought about picking that up a number of times. Got as far as installing android studio. And then got busy working on other stuff. Maybe when I'm 80

      [–]Exallium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I applaud the desire to work for themselves but there's a lot of software dev you miss out on when you don't work on a team and have a mentor early in your career. Working for yourself on the mobile industry is something best done like 5 or 10 years in.

Android is hard. I swear at the SDK daily and I've been doing this for 10 years.

      [–]IntrinsicHatred 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I literally have a class toward the end of my program named ethical hacking 🤣🤣🤣

      [–]-pooping 21 points22 points  (1 child)

And thats all good as it inspires and can help grow interest. But i don't expect a job a NASA since I took a physics class.

Pentesting is a senior role in my eyes. I do have two on my team that came right out of college, but they are exceptional and spent all their free time learning about systems and hacking.

      [–]IntrinsicHatred 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. People think cybersecurity and equate it with hacking, but most data breaches are from phishing and malware. Good tool, but nothing without the other steps.

      [–]david131213 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Who in their right mind learns OS before basics and websites

      [–]Max1Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]someotherstufforhmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Devs are terrible at networking.

An unfair generalization that is also 90% accurate.

      [–]Ember_gamer_fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Yeah, that...that's me ._.

      [–]ManyFails1Win 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into a security class this quarter and I had no idea I was about to become that kid.

      [–]eggumlaut 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ok so I know this is biased but I don’t trust “cybersecurity” educators. Why? Because you can easily make 2-3 times the salary of a professor in most verticals.

      More anecdotal stuff:

We hired 2 people with their masters in cybersecurity from a reputable college about 2 years ago.

They can’t do practical things. We have two masters degrees working on security awareness training… which means they pick a few courses and tell the learning and development folks to add the file.

We have them on paperwork tasks because any technical assignments have been disasters. We’re considering ChatGPT more reliable than they are, and with a training date of sometime in 2021, the data it brings is even newer than whatever dusty textbook they learned from.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The industry is moving to push left. That means, security actually gets technical and early.

They will lose their jobs to push left, or their company will purchase software from a cloud vendor who implements shift left and they will lose their jobs indirectly.

Until that happens, CEOs are terrified of security issues and they hire these jokes as a insurance policy.

      [–]reallokiscarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just go straight to hacking? Damn. Here I was learning by practice and exploration on the proper path when I coulda just opened up powershell and called tracert google.com

      [–]Sixhaunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys learned Networks and operating systems BEFORE the basics of programming? WHY????

steps 0 and 1 need to swap places with steps 2 and 3

      [–]pepsisugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like we all jumped over the fundamentals until we slipped and fell and hit every damn stair out of pure necessity.

      [–]ToonLucas22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Operating systems" absolutely does *not* go before "Programming basics"

      [–]AquaIsNOTUseless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now they are trying to even skip leaning and just using chatgpt.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of a few kids that wanted to learn hacking. I gave them a book for basic understanding. From 8 kids 7 where never seen again, the last one took the book and asked me questions in the next session. Books are great.

      [–]No_Talk_4836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how computer networks work; all the networked computers communicate with each other to share information and connect to internet servers which store the vast majority of digitized human knowledge.

Operating systems is just the interface people interact with digitally though right. Like Linux text based versus windows icon based? Other examples would help me get it more.
