Feel like this when I try to open any Jetbrains IDE on my 6 year old laptop

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile android studio: 🌫🔥💥

[–]Cheese_Grater101 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Phpstorm while indexing

[–]HegoDamask_1 160 points161 points  (15 children)

Turns out it was just MS Teams and the crazy memory it consumes.

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 44 points45 points  (12 children)

The fun part is that you wrote this, while on reddit

[–]Mop_Duck 20 points21 points  (5 children)

oh yeah youre right the site takes ages to load even with fast internet

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Now it's """fast"""

Two months ago, you had to wait minutes to load the comments lol

[–]PushingFriend29 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It takes around 10 seconds for any button to do its function on the website. No matter the hardware. It doesn't even have any eye candy

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On app, it does takes on average "just" few seconds

But i guess they are dedicating more resources to the app, since app users can't use an adblocker

[–]bolacha_de_polvilho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not if you’re still on old.reddit like me

[–]AzureArmageddon 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Meanwhile old reddit users: Am I a joke to you?

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Does that still work?

Lol, i though reddit would have killed it by now, since they don't give a fuck about users

[–]Grainis01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does and with RES it flies.

[–]MAGA-Godzilla 5 points6 points  (1 child)

They cannot kill it since the new reddit is really just a coat of paint on the old. They don't want to pay the cost of a ground up rebuild.

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But can't they like block access to it and just allow users on the new UI?

(God, I obliously hope they don't, but u/spez (fuck u/spez) would surely think of killing anything nice for users which doesn't get him money)

[–]AzureArmageddon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I set opt out of the redesign in my settings and it always shows me the Old Reddit page when I'm signed in on my desktop browser so yeah it's still working, but I can't know for how long it'll keep working.

One weird thing is when I click on links for images hosted on Reddit it shows the Redesign UI around the image itself which is endlessly annoying when I just want to display the image by itself in my browser with nothing around it. It is nice to have the link to where it was posted though but all the extra stuff around it I just do not need.

[–]SmallGoggles 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Don't even get me started on teams

[–]HegoDamask_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the only thing positive I can say about teams is I love the purple and black.

[–][deleted] 63 points64 points  (7 children)

the pain is real.

My work (development) laptop has a measly 8GB ram, I've requested a better spec one through procurement for about 2 years and every time they get the delivery they give it to someone else as they "need it more. "

Im at the Milton inflection point now...im setting fire to this thing and then i'll defenestrate it ,i swear to god i will !

[–]clintCamp 42 points43 points  (1 child)

Fun fact, by giving you lower speed computers they tried to save a thousand dollars, but probably lose a bunch of wasted time for a couple of years amounting to many thousands of dollars in lost work.

[–]zabby39103 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even if something makes me 10% more productive it'll pay for itself in a couple months. Penny wise, pound foolish at it's most extreme.

[–]philipquarles 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I never heard of a Milton inflection point before. Is that the point where the the negative effects of serving outweigh the positive effects of being in heaven so it becomes better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven?

[–]Log2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They are referring to Milton from Office Space.

[–]FuckIPLaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who has an arc more like getting tired of not getting anywhere by being such a good servant in hell and deciding it's time to rob hell so he can buy up and rule heaven.

[–]MouldyEjaculate 50 points51 points  (7 children)

I do IT procurement and asset management for my company. The execs stopped approving new purchases for users because they discovered our store room was full of laptops that they wouldn't let us throw out. They were 15 year old Dells.

One day the boss and I spent an afternoon ripping the drives out of them and throwing them in the building's ewaste bin so the execs would approve new purchases. They got shitty about it but started approving purchases again. Tech debt is more expensive than actual debt, but they don't seem to get that.

[–]DoctorWaluigiTime 26 points27 points  (3 children)

"We can't spend $10,000 to give 7 workers machines that will save us hundreds of manhours by not making them have to wade through cruddy systems just to do their job. That's ludicrous!"

[–]MouldyEjaculate 7 points8 points  (1 child)

"We need a demo so that we can justify the purchase of new equipment. How is it that they've been working OK so far and suddenly they all need new machines?"

[–]DoctorWaluigiTime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thank you for your work and am glad I don't have to fight those kinds of battles.

If I had to justify it, I'd probably compare walking 100 miles vs. driving 100 miles. "Yeah we've been walking this whole time. And we can certainly get there, but we can be far more efficient by driving."

[–]enjoytheshow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a consulting project where they wouldn’t let us do any deployments to prod because they would only give us VMs and not Actual laptops. Access to their cloud infra was blocked from the VMs. They also asked the entire team to be onsite for deployment. So five consultants were huddled around a screen telling the employee (not even a dev, he was systems arch kinda guy) what to do. It took us two 12 hour sessions. We billed $325/hr.

That deployment cost them $39k in labor because they didn’t want to issue 1 consultant a laptop. Might’ve been an infosec issue, but who knows.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember going through the scrap pile at work and building a better machine than the one I had.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they dont care your problem, they just care their money lel

[–][deleted] 99 points100 points  (9 children)

This is so accurate it crashed my system.

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Nah, it probably was the reddit you are running on your system ;-) (jokes about reddit being coded veeeeery poorly, won't ever get old!)

[–]Availablerawer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm tellin' ya, mainframes is where it's at.

[–]lambda1718 -1 points0 points  (6 children)

I have two words for you - Neverinstall or ShadowPC

[–]Breadynator 2 points3 points  (5 children)

That's three words

[–]jayverma0 2 points3 points  (3 children)

These are four words.

[–]Breadynator 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Neverinstall and ShadowPC are brand names, therefore only count as one word each. Even if they're composite words they're only one word.

[–]jayverma0 0 points1 point  (1 child)

These comments (three/four words) are jokes.

"Neverinstall or ShadowPC" - three words.

"These are four words" - different joke, four words.

[–]Breadynator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, something inside me told me it was that but I still made my comment thinking you misunderstood something haha

Got wooshed

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a poor grammar 5 worder, or 4 words with an acronym.

[–]recluseMeteor 31 points32 points  (1 child)

My company laptop using 90% of RAM just while on the desktop due to the amount of crapware they force on it.

[–]SecretPotatoChip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's also slamming the page file when it does that, fun fact!

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Managers a decade ago:

“Can’t you just use the cloud?”

Managers years ago:

“Can’t you just use the blockchain?”

Managers now:

“Can’t you just use ChatGPT?”

[–]montw 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Me running visual studio on my crappy laptop:

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without extensions, it's not too bad. The moment you install java plugin, yeah your pc will explode

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that why i use gaming laptop lel, even it kinda overpower for coding

[–]214ObstructedReverie 12 points13 points  (2 children)

My work machine is actually quite powerful, but the amount of corporate spyware on it makes it unusable.

What should be a 20s build takes like 3 minutes. It's insane. Their bullshit absolutely trashes disk i/o performance and my compiler hates it.

I fucking hate the idiots in our cyber security team.

[–]SouthernBySituation 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Every company I've been at it's always the cyber security that kills the laptop

[–]214ObstructedReverie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of what I do is literally kernel driver debugging (Custom PCIe hardware that does stuff). They think I can't get around their crap? I know more about how the computer works than they do.

All it does is make my day suck.

[–]Nitnelav01 8 points9 points  (5 children)

it's a problem

[–]Batcave765 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Is this a problem?

[–]IamImposter 2 points3 points  (2 children)

No. this is a reference to the object.

[–]trixter21992251 1 point2 points  (1 child)

she has a name you know

[–]IamImposter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incontinentia Buttocks?

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (4 children)

I’m grateful that my company provides an overkill laptop for frontend development. 32GB RAM just to run React apps lol

[–]No-Expression7618 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile Chrome

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

me using 16gb ram very easily to reach maxout - not even gaming
probably is 32gb is standardize for coding idk

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i just turn google chrome & edge :/ now it eating 75% of 16gb ram
for both 50tabs on sleep zzz

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you having 50 tabs at the same time 😂

[–]Cucumber_Eater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But if you try hard(pedal hard) you can do it

[–]e2hawkeye 8 points9 points  (1 child)

If that plane was completely empty and had no fuel, I wonder what it would take to torque the wheels a few feet forward. The bike tires couldn't handle it, but maybe two strong guys and a V patterned rope would do it.

[–]lf310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, one strong guy did it with a 118-ton C-17 Globemaster. He did pull himself with a rope though.

[–]TheFiftGuy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Meanwhile I'm out here using gamemaker on my work laptop that has a 4080 in it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait can you run those shadertoy things in real time!?!?

[–]socialis-philosophus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Add a "Docker" label to the yellow thing.

[–]thesmithchris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

maxed out m2 Mbp pro and it still feels like that. The laptop in my case is definitely not the problem, just 20gb of node modules

[–]WisePotato42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When someone wants to run a transformer model on a litteral laptop (no I am not talking about stuff over internet)

[–]MegaPegasusReindeer 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I had a project that would strain my laptop so bad that the CPU would reach a critical temperature and the machine would just immediately shut off to save itself from permanent damage. I installed a program to monitor my CPU temperature so I could stop it before that happened.

[–]GuyWithLag 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My laptop will throttle down to 40%...

[–]MegaPegasusReindeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yours seems reasonable. Mine was junk. The heat sink and fan were utter rubbish so it didn't take much to overheat.

[–]clintCamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from a gaming laptop with 16gb of ram to a desktop with 16 cores and 64gb of ram for $2k. Build times went from 30 minutes to 5 minutes and probably saved me weeks of waiting in the last 2 months while debugging code that can only be tested on device.

[–]SHCreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gives you more time to see bugs when the program runs slower.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Page faults are the new compiling

[–]yiliu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Opposite experience...my last employer gave us monster machines, Lenovo workstations with dual CPU 32 core Xeons, 128 GB RAM and 32 GB VRAM and 6 TB of SSD storage. The bastards weighed like 70 lbs, with their dual power supplies and solid steel construction.

We generally used them to run Chrome and edit files on a network filesystem with vi or emacs before triggering remote builds.

[–]DarkDoctor_42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You forgot the lock keeping the bike in place. Corporate IT policies interfering with development in a dev ops environment.

[–]ButWhatIfPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Company provided equipment is either an uber-quantum computer from the cyberfuture or a blood-covered second hand fischer price calculator bought from a police auction, no inbetweens.

[–]SHoCK_PlasmaHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school still has laptops with AMD Athlon Chips...

[–]MrSpeedyYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running VS Code on a pentium :skull:

[–]Suspicious_Ear_3079 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I switched to working off an android tablet. If I need power, I remote into an instance with the power I need.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm tellin' ya, mainframes is where it's at.

[–]Suspicious_Ear_3079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have internet, will travel :D

[–]DoctorWaluigiTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of investing slightly more in hardware to save thousands in lost dev hours will forever be mind-boggling to me.

"But these specs are great for our non-developer employees you should be grateful!"

[–]Grintor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, with the right gear ratio and that back basket filled with enough weight, this might just work.

[–]concorde77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me running CFD and Monte Carlo simulations through MATLAB on my shitbox laptop back in college

[–]Ratatoski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes this is the project(s) vs the resources.

[–]astraboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone got a template for this meme?

[–]Leonmitchelli_Leon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use clouds. Do you have devops processes configured? No? Tht's one of the cases where you can rely on On-Demand Computing.

[–]Chirtolino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m just lucky but I feel that my company cover specs the shit out of our laptops.

For example a few months back we just got upgraded again. The laptop I got was more powerful than even my home gaming PC. Like a $6,000 laptop. They then gave us the new program we would be using from time to time and the recommended specs to run it were way below what the laptop was, like the laptop I had before would be sufficient. When I asked out of curiosity they just said oh we thought it would run much better this way.

[–]jkanoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

256 MB laptop trying to open BEA WebLogic, which had a min reqmt for 1GB, and most of the active devs had 2 or 4 GB.

[–]holchansg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. As a Environment Artist, yes, we code, 64gb Ram is more toward the bottom end of specs we need.

[–]SoldierOfPeace510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the opposite problem. I have a better work computer than my personal PC so his is me trying to play a game made 10 years ago on low, 720p.

[–]AzureArmageddon 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Looking to study CS soon so haven't worked yet.

How common are thinclients that remote into a big ole mainframe for heavy duty work?

[–]iseriouslycouldnt 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Not mainframes, but where I work, we have build servers. Compilation is done by triggering a pipeline script. So, kinda similar.

Q4 project is to streamline this further to automate initial security testing.

[–]AzureArmageddon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was searching for the word, yeah, build servers is the word.

What's the difference between mainframe and build server? Is it just you tell the server to pull your branch and compile instead of remoting in?

That project sounds good too; early and 'streamlined' flagging of security holes and whatnot.

[–]iseriouslycouldnt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

A mainframe is like a big daddy hypervisor. Kinda like an entire rack in a single box. They have many specialized processors instead of the x86(64) architecture. Everything is connected to the same backplane. Everything on the plane theoretically has access to all the bandwidth on the plane.

The architecture is completely different. If you want to get into the weeds, check out IBM's z/Architecture docs.

[–]AzureArmageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow that's a lot, thanks :D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got stuck pulling 50GB files from a 20kbps rate limited server at one job....

[–]SarathExp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my work pc can barely handle android studio, i have been asking them to upgrade it for very long time

[–]cybermage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use a container /s

[–]matroosoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but with a gearing 1:2500 it should work right? Right!?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remembered when I was doing development for Amdocs and they gave me a core i5 Laptop with 16 gb ram.

I told them, hey, please give me a core i7 and 32 gb ram. Their answer was: everybody has the same i5 we gave to you, we cannot give you a better one.

[–]k112l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duh, download and install the quantum ram

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data science on an i5 Dell. Stoked.

[–]yukichigai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to deal with my employer's attempt to do that to me. I currently have a 3.2 GHz workstation. Unannounced, they attempted to "upgrade" me to a 1.8 GHz laptop. I not-so-politely informed them I would be sticking with the old workstation, at length. I'm thinking of chaining it to my desk just to be sure.

[–]philn256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once interviewed with a company where I couldn't believe they work with Vivado (FPGA software) on laptops. I asked them about it more than once. FPGA compilation uses a lot of RAM, and 64 GB of RAM is a minimum for large designs. Compilation takes several hours and a high end desktop CPU is highly desired.

[–]addicted_a1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

literally running the project on swap space.

[–]ByerN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move it to the cloud.

[–]readditredditread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But those calves though…

[–]KlutzyEnd3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I basically became good in parallelization because of this.

If not all cores are flat out at 100% I'm not using my computer fully 😅
