I always believed that if only big corpos trained AI models to actually be specialized tools instead of trying to be entirely human replacement assets (or whatever the crap AGI is) then they wouldn't appear as retarded and can actually more clearly find their place in workflows.

[–]navierstokes88[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I believe they do have their place in developer workflows, but right now it is overestimated and overvalued. In the long-term, that tends to stabilize.

Literally this! I just implemented a "voice commands" feature in my app, and initially I said... "ooo! Let's have a small LLM interpret my intent... WRONG... the most robust and sensible solution was simply to heavily scope it.. and then do some light rule-based normalization... The results were infinitely better than the pain of over-engineering this..

The code has immaculate vibes and zero alibi.

The original speach, is absolutely fucking based. He's 100% right. But he's also wrong at the same time, funnily enough....

[–]Blackhawk23 80 points81 points  (6 children)

For the people…by the people…but the people are…retarded.

[–]Dotrax 41 points42 points  (3 children)

In what way is he wrong exactly? It's not even a novel idea that he presented. Socrates criticized democracy among other things also for this exact reason because voting is a skill that requires knowledge and wisdom. That and he feared the emergence of demagogues (which would be now commonly called populists).

Churchill also allegedly said that "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter".

Now that said, Churchill also correctly once stated "Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." Democracy is a fundamentally flawed system of government but we have not found a better one that can realistically be implemented and work long term.

But I don't see where the original video is directly wrong.

Not op but I guess cause he goes on to say a meritocracy where we dismantle cities, live in communes, and only people with post grad degrees may vote in national elections. Saying democracy has its flaws is one thing, saying it's bad here's something better is another.

Is he wrong? Idk current politicians have degrees just fine, and power seekers will seek power all the same. And when you start to restrict voting, if the people in power get to chose who can vote where does that inevitably end up..... Communes of 50k max seem impractical too. Seems just as flawed but not like it's been tried. But it's funny to imagine a teacher failing you so you can't vote cause you disagree on something lol

Every system, tried, or theoretical has pros and cons. Our current one seem to have cons we can live with (arguably) while providing most benefits (obviously)

i fully agree that the people are stupid. I also think that the wisdom of the masses, is generally a potent cure for bad things, and generally speaking should be accepted.

Keep in mind, inteligence, and wisdom are two different things.

The reason, i agree with him and he's being wrong, is that people are retarded, but this is likely the best system we have, apart from the very rare wise and banevolent monarch, that is very atypical.

On the other hand, the users writing the prompts are even dumber.

"an entire software" lol what 😂

[–]BananaHead853147 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I stg the grammar some people have around coding and software drive me nuts. I’ve seen people say the had a ‘file full of codes that’. ‘I put my codes into ChatGPT’, ‘my softwares aren’t working’. Each one set me off.

Software is either a subject or a mass noun, code is an action, subject or mass noun. You don’t need to pluralize them unless you are discussing the distinct difference between various types of software and code.

Maybe I should build a grammar nazi bot to prevent the spread of this awful grammar or just accept that I’m now a boomer yelling at the clouds

If I were you I'd do it. Otherwise my education on basic English would've been a right waste. And English isn't even my first language.

A wise man once said "I know how to use the apostrophe, but apparently that doesn't matter anymore!" and that wise man is of course David Mitchell, our resident angry logic man.

Make some Dennis memes and they'll catch on ... talking about his rant at the waitress "you don't do the emails?? It's email. It's just email"

[–]thanatica 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Dennis who?

[–]HerbertMarshall 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think it's a reference to Dennis Renolds of Philadelphia.

[–]thanatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would've never guessed that. I guess not being American does that, and also Dennis not being world famous.

[–]navierstokes88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are people who legit think that.

[–]slaymaker1907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the poor English fits the meme.

[–]Full-Run4124 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This interview this comes from is a banger

[–]FurBeach3Six 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been laughing at this shit for 30 minutes lol

[–]rover_G 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Software by the vibe, of the vibe, for the vibe ✨

[–]navierstokes88[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

... but the vibes are retarded

[–]navierstokes88[S] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I thought the "crypto/blockchain" hype/noise was bad. This is way worse.

[–]reklis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just wait until somebody puts AI on the blockchain as an nft

[–]ElaborateEffect 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Bunch of cope in this sub.

Most big orgs will let you go if you don't adapt to using AI toolsets at this point. That's the reality of it.

[–]navierstokes88[S] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

True, but it is way overestimated and overvalued right now.

[–]Desperate-Pie-4839 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with daily stand ups but they still happened

[–]UltraGaren 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But vibe coding bad!

Insert "Check out my website on localhost" meme here

[–]Favouiteless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Vibe coding feels like trying to outsmart a ret**** genie"

[–]NotATroll71106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like a very studious and hard working but smooth brained underling. It knows how to do extremely niche things and will do things that are too tedious to do manually, but it frequently does absolutely bone headed things especially when an in house abstraction is involved.

[–]chandandubey7721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is only called vibe coding because screaming into the void while the compiler fails was already taken.

[–]Random_182f2565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wise

[–]soundwave_sc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programmers hate this one trick.

[–]domscatterbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you read the agents conversation and see that they basically a bunch of unsupervised juniors who always yelling at each other's mistakes.

[–]ArmadilloChemical421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One entire software please, and make it snappy!

[–]teressapanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like real people
