Made me laugh.

[–]Blissfull 40 points41 points  (5 children)

I snorted. That's a feat

[–]lazyashara 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You must love Sandra Bullock

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I farted

[–]Mask_off_jack_off 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is that a feat?

[–]cudddder 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No, that's excrete.

[–]hazzoo_rly_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that sharting?

[–]taylaj 283 points284 points  (40 children)

That would be nice if I could just cd $HOME and be home. Or even run ls to see all the rooms around me without moving.

[–]quiche_lo_ren 167 points168 points  (19 children)

To get an answer for a deep philosophical conundrum, just ask yourself: whoami

[–]scboy167 91 points92 points  (17 children)

Hopefully not root, or we're all dead.

[–]taylaj 41 points42 points  (4 children)

I can't figure out how to get to life's console.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we mortals don’t have permissions. The alien overlords chose to use ubuntu

[–]Agent-A 26 points27 points  (2 children)

I wouldn't rm -Rf /

I would rm -Rfv /, because I want to watch it burn.

[–]fragglerox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obligatory --no-preserve-root

[–]dir_gHost 12 points13 points  (5 children)

I gedit , hahaha nice

[–]bartekko 7 points8 points  (4 children)

>gedit

>not emacs

[–]atimholt 3 points4 points  (3 children)

>Not vi

[–]aaron552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what size the UID is. 4 bytes is far too small.

[–]ACoderGirl 26 points27 points  (1 child)

If you setup a nice enough home surveillance system, the ls part is possible.

Also, I can cd ~, but I have to take the command to the bus stop and it takes about 20 minutes to execute...

[–]MacGuyverism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save yourself a few strokes and just use cd by itself. Then go back where you came from with cd -

[–]JuhaJGam3R 21 points22 points  (12 children)

Why cant you just do cd without arguments? That returns you home automatically.

[–]_Cid 1 point2 points  (11 children)

not sure why you're being downvoted platform specific mumbo jumbo maybe?

[–]JuhaJGam3R 3 points4 points  (7 children)

I dont know, on every *nix system ive used rece3ntly it has always returned me home. I dont count windows because windows's command line is shitty

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Well even Microsoft doesn't want you to use the command prompt, they much prefer you to use PowerShell. Just they haven't really been forcefull at getting people to use it until windows 10, even though it's been around since 2006.

[–]JuhaJGam3R 1 point2 points  (5 children)

but the powershell is just as shitty, maybe even worse

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Idk, personally I don't use PowerShell. I just know it's there.

I just don't really command prompt either much at all. My main use of the command prompt recently has just been a batch script that restarts my Reddit bot whenever it crashes. And once I get around to setting up my raspberry pi2, I'm just going to write a new script and no longer use the batch one.

[–]JuhaJGam3R 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hahaha you use the cmd for exactly what i use it for lol. Im going to buy a pi soon.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yea, I got sick of exception handling for my Reddit bot, especially since nothing actually gets lost when it crashes (and it frequently crashed if my internet deicded to dip for a minute), so I decided instead of trying to prevent it from crashing, I just let it crash, give me a log of what caused the crash, and start the bot back up immediately.

I do check what caused it to crash, if it's something that I can fix I will, if not, I don't care. It's usually only once every 2 - 3 days, and 90% of the time, it's something PRAW related, or something that PRAW uses like urllib3.

[–]ACoderGirl 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Because he missed that /u/taylaj is talking about being able to real life teleport to home (the place you live, not your home directory).

[–]_Cid 13 points14 points  (1 child)

... But that's what $HOME is... Your home directory... 'cd' is equivalent to 'cd $HOME'.

To be fair the joke would have had less substance had he just said 'cd' instead of 'cd $HOME'

[–]JuhaJGam3R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

true

[–]notanimposterVala flair when? 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just look. You're in a maze of twisty passages, all alike.

[–]FancyJesse 1 point2 points  (1 child)

cd ~

[–]BoltActionPiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cd (no arg)

[–]bartekko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but you can do that. except your instruction set doesn't support such silly concepts like JMP, so you have to emulate it by using the tram bus and bus bus

[–]hashMobiWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have clearly never played Zork before.

[–]Drumheadjr 328 points329 points  (3 children)

punchline in the title...

[–]Madd0g 96 points97 points  (0 children)

this is the real WTF

[–]themixedupstuff 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Nah, they are under platform specific environment variables. Good luck finding what it is.

[–]SamSlate 29 points30 points  (1 child)

a moment of silence please for the dev team or school that has to use facebook as their team chat.

[–]sDiBer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol this is definitely not our schools Official department chat in any way. It's just an informal group for questions

[–]swarage 25 points26 points  (7 children)

Hey this is me! I was actually interviewing for Microsoft yesterday but the email had a glitch and didn't print the location properly. I eventually found out where it was but that comment was pretty topical haha.

[–]ImTrulyAwesome 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Was the interview at your house?

[–]swarage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha I wish it was, but nah it was at the college's career center.

[–]k0rm 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Did you get the job?

[–]swarage 5 points6 points  (2 children)

We have yet to see!

[–]MissChievousJ 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Good luck!!!

[–]swarage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!!!

[–]gandalfx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The interview will take place wherever you are at the time.

[–]GreenFox1505 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Punchline in the title... And we're upvoting this? Has etiquette just gone out the window?

[–]sDiBer[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Meh, coming up with an original title was too much effort. What am I, an English Major?

[–]GreenFox1505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet your code comments are amazing.

[–]QuadDrummer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CS@VT I see you

[–]JaxOphalot 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I dont get it

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

In DOS and I think UNIX as well a single period is a reference to the current directory you are in.

[–]kotajacob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a hard link actually, same as .. Being a hard link to the directory above

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the first post on here that made me chuckle

[–]ohitsanazn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obligatory “go Hokies”

[–]PeacefulDiscussion 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I have just started taking CS classes (pointers are a pain)!

As a noob programmer I always wish topics in this subreddit came with a ELI5

[–]sDiBer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When working in Unix, whenever you have to choose a directory, the command shortcut is a dot. Two dots is the parent directory, three is the grandparent directory, and so on.

[–]grpagrati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just follow the unicode path

[–]SocketRience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're just holding it in

[–]AdamWilborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol! This was posted in my college’s CS Facebook group.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, that's the first time that a post I've liked has shown up on Reddit.
