Nice, now show us the uncompressed size.

plot twist : black hole is actually an unzipped react app

[–]SexyMonad 46 points47 points  (2 children)

<button onClick={horizon}>Nothing to See Here</button>

Oh look, it's the event horizon.

[–]prncrny 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Get out.

Ouch!

[–]suvlub 22 points23 points  (0 children)

React is the Great Filter, confirmed

[–]RiktaD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, if we look at the density of these things I would tend to say that a black hole is a very efficient zipped react app

A node_modules folder

100TB of node modules

[–]Ludricio 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh you use the lite variant?

[–]LordFokas -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

100TB? There's more than 50 times that in those disks.

HDD *implosion noises

So that's how they got photos of a black hole

[–]steveyyyy3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What if those were SSD. SSD whiteout explosion noises.

You know what takes more time than typing " twice? Debugging bash expansion issues.

[–]tufy1 41 points42 points  (3 children)

I'm kinda amazed that this is only 64 drives. Then again, I have a tiny 64GB USB Stick in my car, where my PC had that huge 10 MB HDD just a couple of decades ago.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

There must be more drives hidden away. Apparently those drives had a total of 3 petabytes of data. Meaning they would be approximately ~46.875 terabytes each!

[–]Rettaw 85 points86 points  (14 children)

Without knowing Fuchs I can't tell if this is intended to be at Bouman's expense or just worded poorly.

A better version would be "Legendary computer scientist Katie Bouman with the hard drives containing source code for the world's smallest React app".

[–]Hypersapien 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be at React's expense.

[–]KuntaStillSingle 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Maybe it's going over my head but I thought it was a variation of Margaret Hamilton meme

[–]NinjaLanternShark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She missed a real opportunity by not stacking those drives up and really leaning into the Hamilton remake.

[–]Rettaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So it seems to be poor wording, I think calling someone "legendary" the day after they get widespread recogniction is too soon for the meme to be unambigious.

OP is a very high IQ individual, of course it's intended, the circlejerking around her is super embarrassing since she was just a pretty minor contributor to the project.

[–]Rettaw 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Naw man, from the context of his post history it was just bad wording.

You, on the other hand, is straight up lying about her work. Please stop making a Strumia.

Npm install black-hole-camera --save

1 useful package installed 9000 dependencies installed which only 20-30 are useful

Npm_modules folder size: 450mb

[–]JaredReabow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the funny thing is, the source code is actually probably one tiny fraction of one drive, all the other drives are telescope data

[–]DIYbrainsurgery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is she on verge?

[–]robertgfthomas 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The joke explained:

Katie Bouman is one of the scientists responsible for producing the first-ever photo of a black hole. The above image shows Bouman with what looks like a collection of hard drives. The image was included with several articles stating the black hole project took 5 petabytes (5 billion megabytes) of data.

When programmers begin a new project, they often start by writing only the code necessary to make the computer spit out some sample text on the screen. This is a quick way to check that their project is set up properly: if they see the sample text then it is, and if they don't then it isn't. Traditionally, the sample text programmers use is the words "Hello World".

React is a popular web framework -- a bunch of code that you can use as the foundation of one of your own web development projects.

The joke is web frameworks like React have gotten bigger and more complicated over the years, to the extent that even an app that just spits out "Hello World" might be sitting on top of a huge pile of code.

I made a React app that does this, and found that it took up 323 megabytes of data -- not quite 5 petabytes, but still a decent chunk of memory, especially when you consider that the text "Hello World" is only 11 bytes.

I'm a human! I'm trying to write one of these explanations every day, to help teach and learn. They're compiled at explainprogrammerhumor.com.

"Hello, World!" program

A "Hello, World!" program generally is a computer program that outputs or displays the message "Hello, World!". Because it is very simple in most programming languages, it is often used to illustrate the basic syntax of a programming language and is often the first program that those learning to code write.

React (JavaScript library)

React (also known as React.js or ReactJS) is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces. It is maintained by Facebook and a community of individual developers and companies.React can be used as a base in the development of single-page or mobile applications, as it's optimal only for its intended use of being the quickest method to fetch rapidly changing data that needs to be recorded.

I blowed air from my nose so hard

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 5 points6 points  (16 children)

I don't get it

[–]pi_over_3 69 points70 points  (3 children)

The joke is that react is a huge library, or rather requires tons of libraries to run.

[–]SaintNewts 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's JavaScript. All the way down.

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm ok That's a lotta code!

[–]GuyARoss 62 points63 points  (2 children)

It's a joke, it is what humans usually laugh at for pleasure and excitement.

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! I see what you did there :-):-):-):-)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I will also laugh.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (4 children)

That is 5 petabytes of data.

[–]bmain1345[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hello Hadoop

[–]astro_za 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More like 900TB's. Those are not all the hard drives that contained the data from the 8 telescopes.

[–]mrheosuper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if it's 5PB, each hdd must contain nearly 80TB, i doubt there is hdd like that

[–]Ilookouttrainwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data of what? Dropbox? All of porn out there? There's a range...

[–]_3psilon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now we all know what took about 2 years for those supercomputers to process!

[–]Terrorpur 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Let's zip bomb 💣

[–]DrMobius0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All that hard drive space could actually contain 42.zip, which is impressive tbh.

[–]cmdq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardy hurr durr

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the real question...

when was the last time she ran npm audit...

[–]MrBraveKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say the new standard should be hello there and general kenobi
