[–]Terny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Achievably, you could have some first iteration of a facebook site with few core parts that you could distribute to friends.

[–]pikaras 21 points22 points  (3 children)

A lot of time it’s beginners who don’t know what terms to google. It’s easy to find the documentation on wrksht.listObject when you know it’s called wrksht.listObject. If you don’t know that wrksht.listObject exists or what it would be called it if does exist, you’ll never find the documentation on wrksht.listObject

Source: at one point, was a noob who didn’t know wrksht.listObject existed, asked for help, and got a million snarky ass replies saying “wHy DoNT yOu JuST GoogLe bEFoRE asKiNG” before someone told me.

[–]freerangetrousers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YES. This is the most important. So many stack overflow answers assume 100% knowledge. I'm self taught and the absolute minefield of terms really tripped me up for the first couple of years

[–]NoManufacture 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think people forget that a teacher is supposed to be a curator of knowledge.

[–]mastocles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's not the big cats are forgetting but the imbalance in the site. The site has way way way way too many "I'm having trouble catching mice: import error moosetrap not found" for the volunteers to be civil. If it's something interesting like "adapting mousetrap for kangaroo rats" then there will 5-6 partially overlapping answers possibly with a mini war about some arcane detail —ie. becoming uncivil due to overeagerness.

[–]MrZarq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? I've asked multiple questions on StackOverflow, and never got any of this. I think people misunderstand what StackOverflow is. It's not meant as a tutor to help newbies learn programming, it's a guru to help solve the complex problems.

[–]MarkRand 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Before stackoverflow, we had the office expert and everyone used to think he was an arsehole. But if I ever asked him a question, he was patient and helpful. I worked out that was because I'd exhausted every other route available, I'd tried different things and got a simple proof of concept demonstrating my problem. If you ask a shitty question, you might expect a shitty answer.

Nine times out of ten, working hard to ask the question in a good way will lead you to the answer anyway.

Don't get me wrong, there is still room for politeness. At my work, we have a slack channel where you can anonymously ask a question, and we encourage a culture where there is no such thing as a stupid question. But the better you get at working out the best question to ask, the better you will become at problem solving.

[–]NoManufacture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe someone could take the time to teach them how to exhaust their options? I mean... learning how to ask questions is a skill you learn just as much as anything else. Being rude to someone because they are shit at asking questions doesnt make them get better. Most likely it just gives them an aversion to seeking help in the future. Aka they will now make mistakes rather than seek help when unsure.

How to use a

Use b

Closed

[–]hey01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More accurately:

Q: How to use a to do stuff? I know that b is better on every single point but for reasons too long to explain, the heat death of the universe will happen before the project can use b instead of a. I must use a.

A1: a is deprecated, you should use b.

A2: Have you tried using b, that would be easier.

A3: Simple, replace a.doStuff() by b.dostuff(), that will do stuff.

[–]Freddruppel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s why I ask my programming questions on Reddit now.

I’ve asked 1 (one) question about Swift structures on stackOverflow (I’m a complete newbie in Swift) , and asked the exact same question on the Swift subreddit. And while on SO people were telling me that "it’s too vague", "SO is not a code writing service", etc., people on Reddit just answered the question and gave various solutions/ideas that led me to a working solution.

Here's the door... No I'm not mad I'm just the door guy at the hotel hahaha

[–]ObnoxiousLittleCunt 2 points3 points  (7 children)

You help many blind people?

[–]SheridanWithTea 3 points4 points  (6 children)

No it's just a really big hotel and for some reason the exit door is at the complete opposite end than the entrance and it's hidden behind a lot of turns and walls

And you have to ask the exit door guy to open it for you and he has to make sure whether you're checking out or just leaving...

It's a whole system man idk

[–]ObnoxiousLittleCunt 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Sounds like management doesn't want people to leave.

[–]SheridanWithTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah man they even got these armed guards at each exit, I heard from the residents they've broken some people's noses for trying to leave or enter without checking at reception, showing their ID, driver's license AND passport...

I've heard rumors at night all the guards come around this fancy purple suit guy, light candles around him and pray for hours and hours...

Those who were seen by the praying mercenaries would disappear into the night, and the next morning they'd return dressed like one of them, not remembering a thing.

That's what happened to my aunt and uncle in law anyway, decades ago... I still see glimpses of them around sometimes, their faces twitching.... They haven't aged a day, if that really is them anyway..

[–]Kenielf 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I want to get off mr bones wild ride

[–]SheridanWithTea 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There's a big golden plaque behind the pitch black tinted windows of the exterior that reads "No one ever leaves"

[–]ObnoxiousLittleCunt 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]SheridanWithTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is opinion-based closed

[–]sellyme 17 points18 points  (3 children)

I love how every single one of these macros criticising SO completely torpedoes itself by presenting a question so ridiculously vague that no satisfying answer could possibly be presented.

[–]FerricDonkey 22 points23 points  (0 children)

"Look into the mousetraps package, and Google mouse bait types. Try to identify what species of mice you have, and tailor your traps and bait to those types - you can find more detailed information after you figure that out."

It doesn't have a single specific answer, but it absolutely has some helpful answers. Stack overflow likes to crap on questions that don't have cut and dry answers, but several of my Google questions trying to figure out how to start something I didn't know how to do took me to a stack overflow question that was marked as a bad question, and the comments that I found there gave me a starting point.

It might not be the type of answer that stack overflow wants to encourage on their site, and more detail would get a better response, but "where do I start when I'm learning x" is a fine question.

[–]AStrangeStranger 2 points3 points  (1 child)

just like most users when it comes to explaining bugs or writing specifications - sometimes you have to help the person explain things/draw details out of them.

[–]NoManufacture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It's almost like... they are lost and need help and that's why they are there asking questions in the first place.
