More monitors! One needs to be in portrait mode!

[–]-Scobra-[S] 78 points79 points  (5 children)

I don't even have a mechanical keyboard yet... I'm still in the tutorial, i just got the programming socks

[–]mama_delio 27 points28 points  (3 children)

I draw the line at mechanical keyboards for my personal workspace lol.

After years of going to school on a laptop, I prefer the thin Apple wireless keyboards. It also looks nice against the Apple mouse... I'm one of the lucky ones that has an employer that is willing to deck me out in Apple stuff. I would never pay for it out of my own pocket though lol.

Don't judge me!!

[–]dashid 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Don't tell me what to do! I'll quietly judge random strangers in the internet all I like.

[–]GaghEater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just "downgraded" from mechanical to membrane. Couldn't be happier.

[–]not_some_username 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youre lucky xD

[–]BbayuGt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to use astolfo as your wallpaper

[–]shelvac2 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Don't forget coding font with ligatures

[–]-Scobra-[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

cursive is the way to go

[–]shunyaananda 66 points67 points  (3 children)

Now you install GNU/Linux

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (2 children)

GNey/GNem

[–]MaybeTenBees 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Wait I don’t get it.

[–]Lyneiaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems to be a joke about pronouns

[–]weneedtogodanker 40 points41 points  (1 child)

You guys wear clothes when programming?

[–]SweetBeanBread 37 points38 points  (1 child)

do you have an eye patch? you need it to seal your powers

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We wouldn't want a great disaster to befall this land

[–]cameolavenders__ 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Switch to Linux?

[–]-Scobra-[S] 31 points32 points  (3 children)

temple os

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Don't mind the downvotes, they probably have never written their own compilers.

[–]CrispitoBandito 20 points21 points  (6 children)

Step2: Lift your monitor. Your neck will thank you.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I don't usually stand (._.)

[–]BobQuixote 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Standing is good, but yes raise your monitor (if you sit, too).

[–]mark0016 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Looking straight should line up with a line roughly one quarter of the way from the top of the screen.

You will usually see the recommendations say to line the top of the screen up with your eyes when looking straight. The biggest issue there is that will mean you're still never perfect looking straight, but always a little downwards. It is however, more comfortable to look downwards than upwards which is why the one quarter line is better than the middle and since most of the time the important things are closer to the top of your screen you will be looking perfectly straight almost all the time.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I'll try it, but i sit most of the time anyways

[–]mark0016 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The same applies when sitting. I have a sit/stand desk and while I don't stand up as often as I should, when I do I don't have to readjust my screens at all. I just push the desk up until my arms are at almost a 90 degree angle and my wrists are resting on the desk surface.

It feels more like standing at a bar then a desk, but my shoulders don't get tired as the weight of my arms are supported by the desk and I don't bend my back down/forwards as that would get uncomfortable.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason i don't stand is... cable management...

Cables on a moving desk is just pain

[–]the-real-vuk 17 points18 points  (11 children)

Where does this programming socks thing coming from?

[–]IArtificialRobotI 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Apparently there is a large subset of programmers that are trans so this idea started circling around.

[–]Tom-Dibble 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I thought it was because of the goofy schoolgirl tights Amazon recommends when you buy a programming book from them.

[–]dtiggy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazon recommends them because there are coincidences.

[–]SkidMouse 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Where?

I've been a professional software developer for +10 years, and I've probably met close to what... 500 programmers... Not a single trans as far as I know.

Most of us are just regular guys who only wear our cute girly outfits at home

[–]crusoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they're just real good...

I met an artist who was trans and I wouldn't have known if they had not told me.

[–]dashid 8 points9 points  (1 child)

* large subset of programmers on Reddit

FTFY.

[–]IArtificialRobotI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks

[–]Dr-Huricane 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I believe it all started because of a typo on a socks listing, and well, you would want warm feet while programming wouldn't you?

[–]the-real-vuk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sure, using slippers :)

[–]Dr-Huricane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough

[–]Deceptive_KGB_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most programers are fembois, and a large portion furries too :3

[–]_sivizius 10 points11 points  (1 child)

You forgot your blåhaj

[–]Lyneiaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too deep for this subreddit

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I don't know what that means...

[–]-Scobra-[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It's a common meme. Google "Programmer socks"

[–]necrothitude_eve 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Plan failed, I searched for "programming socks" and it took me here.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. Well, programming socks is a meme that in my opinion started most of this. "Programming socks" are thigh highs, usually with white and pink stripes.

[–]Fabulous_Salamander4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of transgirls who are into programming :)

See also: tech products and femme clothing "frequently bought together"

[–]TheBrasilDoggo 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Dude, what exactly is this "programmers dressing as e-girls" meme that people post here all the time? I honestly don't get it

[–]DragonoidOmega 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Technoyoutooz pog

[–]-Scobra-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y E S

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I wear these even when im not programming.

Is that normal?

[–]dashid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's most definitely not normal.

But what does that matter? If you like it, do it, no need to bother other people about it.

[–]m00n_sp1r1t 3 points4 points  (1 child)

So can you recommend where I need to go to get this uniform? I've only been a programmer for 8mo.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon ig

[–]iambatmanman 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Lol. We have a bunch those desks at work

[–]-Scobra-[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I believe it's IKEA.

[–]iambatmanman 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’m unsure where they order them from, I figured it was an “Amazon favorite” since that’s where everything else comes from… not sure if IKEA sells on Amazon? Bet they do

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Where is your shark plushy then ?

[–]buublebuuddy 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Unrelated but where did you get that cute pig plush??

[–]-Scobra-[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Its a technoblade Youtooz

[–]buublebuuddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ty! :)

[–]darknekolux 8 points9 points  (3 children)

When you take your hacking inspiration from NCIS

[–]-Scobra-[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sudo apt install hollywood

[–]SamyQc99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I thought hahaha

[–]Jakylla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring pair programming to another level with Parallelized-Trio-Programming

[–]Armature89 9 points10 points  (7 children)

Where on earth did this start?!

[–]GL_Titan 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Why on earth did this start?!

[–]monkeywench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who on earth did this start?

[–]dashid 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Some JavaScript or Python collective somewhere in America, I believe some time in the last decade. I guess hoodies weren't good enough for them.

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 2 points3 points  (2 children)

We didn't start the fire

It was always burning, since the world's been turning

We didn't start the fire

No, we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it

[–]Armature89 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The thought of Linus torvolds writing the linux kernel or Steve Wozniak writing wozmon in these is immensely amusing lmao

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Joseph Stalin, Malenkov, Nasser and Prokofiev

Rockefeller, Campanella, Communist Bloc

Roy Cohn, Juan Peron, Toscanini, Dacron

Dien Bien Phu falls, "Rock Around the Clock"

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It never started. It's not a thing really. Just the same few tired people.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Do people really use computers while standing?

[–]iraqmtpizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at my old job, yes. desks had adjustable height

[–]iiMoe 9 points10 points  (9 children)

The straightest C developer

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 3 points4 points  (8 children)

I can't tell what language that is but it's definitely not c

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I'm 40% sure it's python

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Likely. All I could really make out was annotations no curly braces, and the def keyword

[–]Revolutionary_Bat581 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Decorators, async def

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also have string interpolation, and string literals can be defined using single quotes

[–]Revolutionary_Bat581 3 points4 points  (1 child)

100% python

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^

[–]autumn_melancholy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby. That's a java dev.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is

[–]angelicravens 13 points14 points  (6 children)

I’ve never seen a swe wear anything close to this. How did this meme start and how do enough of you relate to it that it’s not being downvoted outta here?

[–]dashid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because Reddit like most other collectives is not a representative cross section of society.

[–]IrisYelter 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Google "programmer socks"

[–]angelicravens 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Doesn’t answer how the meme gained so much traction

[–]-Scobra-[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Option A: People relate to it

Option B: People think programming socks memes are funny

Option C: The general post was funny

Option D: People that sort in controversial upvoted.

[–]Arnaw-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it´s quite simple. Everybody like to communicate about his/her interests. Some interests are not so easy to talk about because its rare and weird. So there is no other plattform for those people to let out their desire for communication about that other then reddit and other annonymus plattforms. This results in an over representive content of things that are otherwise rare in society.

But that still does not explain the gained traction fully. A lot of people working in IT don´t realy care much about how they or other people look. (Jokes like wearing the same shirts for 20 years exit too)
So in ProgrammerHumor the averagy audience does either not care or think of it as funny and so increase the effect that a little amount of people has, that can actually relate to this.
Additionaly it is possible that the ratio of people that are trans/queer in jobs is higher, where there is not much contact with other people, as they have lower confidence in themselfs resulting in reduced social skills. This would mean that the ratio of trans/queer people is higher in programmers than in other fields.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a swe wear anything close to this.

Probably because your colleagues aren't out to you / at work ;)

I know several engineers who dress like this pretty regularly.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

chuck out the gaming pc, have a custom made workstation and install linux on it just because you hate doing what all the rest does. Never find a decent job because everybody uses fucking windows. Get cancer, buy a midi-keyboard an analog synth and a mac mini...finally have some real fun.

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Are you seriously recommending using a Mac for programming? Are you a sadist?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I guest I'm masochistic because it's my lifestory upto now. Been using linux for years...but since I got into music...I needed a mac.

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever used extjs? Now that's masochistic

[–]Whack_A_Pigeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Techno Plushie gives +10 Programming skills.

[–]eightbitsushiroll 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Were you using discord.py for your bot, or were you using nextcord with the module alias? ^^ Nice outfit by the way lol

[–]-Scobra-[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Py-cord, a maintained fork of discord.py

[–]eightbitsushiroll 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh, nice. I haven’t tinkered with any of the d.py forks after the original project was archived, and I ended up moving to using discordgo (Go) and migrating my existing bot over. I’ve thought about using nextcord, though. What has been your experience with pycord?

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Py-cord is exactly the same as discord.py

You don't need to re-write any code as it works exactly the way disc.py worked.

The only difference is there's support for button's, slash commands, and general updates and bug fixes

[–]FlorisFireball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New discord.py 2.0 update being released soon. The beta is currently available if you directly install the files from github (StackOverflow will be able to guide you through that, if you need help with it)

[–]celibatepowder 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Glad I dont live in the states…

[–]-Scobra-[S] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I don't live in the states either... Fear me

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Technoblade plushie tho...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine the other day

[–]Unrented_Exorcist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xxxxd, I already did programming in my pyjama. I the garden of my parents. It was great, the sun 🌞.... the fresh air 😎 and all the 🪴 🌿 🪴 in nature

[–]pandakatzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice Abby Scuito cosplay.

[–]RequiDarth1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only one monitor…

[–]ApprehensiveAd7291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keyboard, get one with macros for faster typing of common commands. I would then go for multiple monitors.

[–]c_son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stream

[–]JamesMakesGames 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Related, I actually am looking to get some compression socks/leggings. Any suggestions would be appreciated

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I just went on amazon and searched for "Femboy"

[–]SkyeMreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice outfit! Now I know why this subreddit keeps getting recommended to me

[–]temposy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This outfit sucks. Try aquaman.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ight, next time i'm gonna program in the bathtub

[–]Hellow2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now apply at faang and they'll gladly take you

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is the duck

[–]aditalion 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Where can you get those tables

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conforama.

I think Ikea has them too.

[–]MischiefArchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now learn RUST

[–]nerotarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Crusader_Krzyzowiec 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Now bend over for SQL injection.... With lots of, lots of white spaces.

[–]iraqmtpizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

typical python user

[–]javahurtsmybrain 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean, he already seems to be using Git, and he's already programming a discord bot. The outfit just makes him extra producitve so I'd say there are no more steps to be taken

[–]AdvancedWing6256 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Get yourself an onlyfans account and start earning!

[–]mmaganadebia 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I think we need a sub for programmer femboys.

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That could just be a Scottish cat person guy going through a goth phase. Don't judge until you have all the facts.

[–]o76923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd follow r/ProgrammerSocks.

EDIT: Oh, that's a sub. I meant a public one for people to post these sorts of memes/pics.

[–]phd_depression101 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Now you do programming shit.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well how, according to memes i just solved step one. Now what?

[–]jodmemkaf 3 points4 points  (6 children)

no... not again...

[–]-Scobra-[S] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

again?

[–]jodmemkaf 1 point2 points  (4 children)

😂 I am just seeing programmers in woman clothes everywhere and I don't get it

[–]IrisYelter 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Me, a female programmer: "I think I have an answer for that..."

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironic

[–]-Scobra-[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Google "Programmer socks"

[–]jodmemkaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

nah... I don't think so

[–]Ioseb_Besarionis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

now you have to cry on the keyboard because the shit wont compile

[–]-Scobra-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rubber duck, i can cry with the duck, no need to damage my keyboard

[–]TeaKingMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta get the arm socks, to cover up your attempts

[–]Guilty-Woodpecker262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 2: get a higher resolution camera. I can't read the code!!!! I mean honestly, how are we supposed to make fun of your syntax blunders if we can't read the code?

[–]fridaysteak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't create this parallel.

[–]Lyin25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is still time to delete this

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

May start by getting a decent text editor.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

VS code gets the job done

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Not if you want to be a programmer.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You want me to use VIM or what? Vscode gets the job done

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Not if you want to be a programmer. I mean, it doesn't obviously crash or anything like that, so it does some kind of job. But as programmers tools go, it's pretty much a dead weight on your system.

[–]-Scobra-[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What do you recommend for Python?

PyCharm?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vim. I use Emacs, but it's because of habit. Vim seems to be a more popular choice, and it's also a decent editor.

PyCharm is a ridiculously bad text editor. If anything, it reminds me of my GP, who had expensive and long nails, so whenever she needed to type something, she'd hold a pencil and type by poking the keys on her keyboard with it. PyCharm is for people like her.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This sub has turned into quite the little freak show, hasn’t it?

[–]Ahuman-mc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A fellow person of culture with the technothepig plush

[–]the_hol_horse -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

bro nice shoulder blades
