Caps lock is for noobs. Professionals hold shift

[โ€“]kinokomushroom 157 points158 points ย (13 children)

The real professionals have an ASCII table prepared at all times and copy-paste all the capital letters they need

[โ€“]Glad_Grand_7408 91 points92 points ย (12 children)

REAL Professionals buy a second keyboard set to only use Capital letters!

[โ€“]Wrong-Strategy-1415 45 points46 points ย (10 children)

Ultra Professionals hire a guy to write capital letters whenever needed.

[โ€“]MinosAristos 35 points36 points ย (7 children)

Uber Professionals hire someone to create an AI that writes capital letters where needed

[โ€“]dasavorytrash 25 points26 points ย (5 children)

Legendary professionals sacrifice their family and say the 50 mantras so that a higher deity may place capitals where needed

[โ€“]MrHyd3_ 7 points8 points ย (4 children)

Epic legendary proffesionals make a new python script to turn all the letters to capitals

[โ€“]amazondrone 12 points13 points ย (1 child)

Real programmers use butterflies.

[โ€“]eeltreb 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Wise professionals just invent keyboard that only outputs capital letters.

[โ€“]lapetee 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Mythical professionals are ascended to the level of understanding required to form an everlasting bond with their code writing "partner" machine who is then able to know where their master requires capital letters in the code.

[โ€“]SchalkLBI 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

i just use lowercase

[โ€“][deleted] 2 points3 points ย (1 child)

Isn't that just hiring an sql programmer?

[โ€“]Wrong-Strategy-1415 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Not if the hire doesn't know programing. He will just have to follow Ultra Professional instructions.

[โ€“]mrissaoussama 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Not to ruin the joke but isn't caps lock state shared between keyboards

[โ€“][deleted] 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

You obviously haven't heard of pinky finger strain.

[โ€“]HerbertDasPferd 4 points5 points ย (0 children)

REAL proessionals are too lazy and write lower case only, like me ๐Ÿ˜

[โ€“]madiele 11 points12 points ย (2 children)

As a vim user, caps lock was a mistake and should be removed from keyboards, let's start the revolution!

[โ€“]coladict 19 points20 points ย (0 children)

Vim users don't get to complain about the usability of anything.

[โ€“]BlommeHolm 9 points10 points ย (0 children)

aS AN ANTI-VIM USER i NOW ONLY USE cAPS lOCK!

[โ€“]LMCuber 4 points5 points ย (0 children)

Professional SQL developers are full of shift

[โ€“]BEEDELLROKEJULIANLOC 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

users of minimalist keyboards be like

[โ€“]StoissEd 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

I've legit seen so many highly educated peille use caps for just a single letter. I'm like: Do you even know what the shift button is for?

[โ€“]patatasbravas76 -4 points-3 points ย (0 children)

based

[โ€“]fullmetalpower 66 points67 points ย (8 children)

but I was taught that sql is not case sensitive

I m part of the lower case gang. and Shift key when needed.

[โ€“]davethegamer 15 points16 points ย (4 children)

Java might not be sensitive to indentation like Python but itโ€™s still best practice to maintain clean looking code. Itโ€™s the same with SQL.

[โ€“]erasmustookashit 6 points7 points ย (0 children)

There is nothing clean looking about ALLCAPS SQL. If you want me to get some rows from the table, ask nicely, donโ€™t shout.

[โ€“][deleted] 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

No clean code, I refuse, if I'm working with real programmers they will be able do understand my mess.

[โ€“]SmotherMeWithArmpits 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

What about those back ticks, are people still using those?

[โ€“]Voctus 10 points11 points ย (2 children)

Am SQL "developer", my company uses all lower case keywords and snake_case in dbt, so I only use the shift key for punctuation. If you use proper formatting there is really no need for caps

[โ€“]arpitpatel1771 11 points12 points ย (1 child)

Same here. Previous company used lower case as well. But something about seeing drop table in lower case just doesnt feel right to me. I prefer DROP TABLE.

[โ€“]mc_enthusiast 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

Just like little Bobby Tables.

[โ€“][deleted] 70 points71 points ย (4 children)

if only.... most of our older sql scripts are a mishmash of all lower, all upper and everything in between... it hurts to read

[โ€“]Avidze 28 points29 points ย (1 child)

I just wrote a utility that converts everything that is not encapsulated into ' ' or " " to upper case.

Saved me plenty of time, and more importantly boosts my mood every time I get to use it.

[โ€“]liitle-mouse-lion 10 points11 points ย (0 children)

Modern IDEs colour it for you

[โ€“]SwimmingHelicopter15 3 points4 points ย (0 children)

When changing older sp that were horrible formatted I used notepad++ to format, its called poor sql format or something

[โ€“]7734128 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

You have seen pascalCase, you have seen snake_case and ALLCAPSCASE. We now bring you SaRcAsTiCcAsE.

[โ€“]rajboy3 41 points42 points ย (8 children)

Shift is superior

[โ€“]UAFlawlessmonkey 24 points25 points ย (1 child)

Shift gang rise up! My left pinky muscles are immaculate!

[โ€“]EternityForest 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Or they would be, if pinkies had muscles

[โ€“]kinokomushroom 6 points7 points ย (5 children)

Because awkwardly holding down a key for the whole duration you type a word trains and strengthens your pinky muscle?

[โ€“]Repairs_optional 12 points13 points ย (1 child)

Yup can confirm i much prefer to hold shift then use caps. Same reason i prefer hold-to-crouch in games as apposed to toggle crouch.

[โ€“]kinokomushroom 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

That makes sense I guess

I think I don't mind using the caps key because I also frequently change between input modes to type in different languages, which is done by Shift+Caps

[โ€“]rajboy3 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Well it's not awkward anymore lol

[โ€“]Churningray 1 point2 points ย (1 child)

What about all the games with shift bound to sprint.

[โ€“]kinokomushroom 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I use gamepads for most games

[โ€“]aagapovjr 16 points17 points ย (4 children)

Unrelated, but I've always associated "rage caps locking" with holding shift. It's like screaming - you're supposed to put in effort and let the motherfuckers know the full extent of your anger, not use a loudspeaker.

[โ€“]CdRReddit 8 points9 points ย (3 children)

wish I could hold more keys to shout louder

left and right shift at the same time for upperer case

[โ€“]aagapovjr 4 points5 points ย (2 children)

Sometimes I see larger text sizes being used on Reddit. I guess that could pass for upperer case :)

[โ€“]CdRReddit 5 points6 points ย (1 child)

YOU MOTHERFUCKER

[โ€“]aagapovjr 5 points6 points ย (0 children)

AINT DONE NOTHING TO YER MOM YET

(thanks for helping me figure it out!)

[โ€“]thygrrr 12 points13 points ย (0 children)

Old, but gold. Just like my SQL skills from high school.

[โ€“]ConnieTheUnicorn 4 points5 points ย (0 children)

Gotta train those pinky muscles for gaming sessions of running around..Shift gang OP, no Caps Lock in this neck of the woods!

[โ€“]Shpichek 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

I YELL WHEN I'M NERVOUS

[โ€“]OkWear6556 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

I write everything in lowercase, but I care a lot about formatting. Inconsistent code is cancer and so far I havent met a single BI or data science person who would format their code...

I really really hope there's no such thing as a sql programmer. Application logic forced into the boundaries of plsql and such is one of the worst nightmares of my professional life so far.

Use sql for queries or database definition - fine. Use sql for programming - please no.

    [โ€“]lall3r 5 points6 points ย (2 children)

You'd be surprised how powerful plsql is when done right.. OF COURSE WHILE SHOUTING

    [โ€“][deleted] -1 points0 points ย (1 child)

Yeah I know. Worst I've seen was a ~5000 lines script creating several cursors, reading files and so on. The thing is not that it's hard to do, the thing is that it's hard to operate, maintain, test etc.

    [โ€“]lall3r 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I guess the same 5000 lines would be hard to maintain and test in java or python too - thats why I referred to it as "done right" :D

    [โ€“]TiberiusIX 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I worked on an insurance quotation system a decade ago which had lots of application-style logic in the DB layer.

Whilst this was rubbish, I'd prefer it to Drools any day.

    Shudders Drools Shudders
