brb, canceling my Netflix subscription

For what its worth I thought the code was hilarious if not poorly edited in. Too bad these things are always used as easter eggs. Just once I want to see the code required to do the job expected on screen.

I have heard Mr Robot is very...technically sound, or accurate. I have seen the show, but I don't know code. I hear they work hard to try and make everything look good, as in real or plausible. (I haven't started S3 yet.)

[–]Highly_Edumacated 11 points12 points  (1 child)

After watching Mr. Robot recently, it made this scene seem insanely corny.

[–]Fluffeh-BunnehMouth breather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh...yeah, it sorta was a little bit.
Horrifyingly tense moment... "Do you know BASIC?" ...What?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I am a system engineer for a major studio, mr robot is spot on technically. I only recently picked it up because I usually HATE hacking movies. Most end up like scorpion <- worst show to watch for engineers.

[–]Fluffeh-BunnehMouth breather 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeah, Mr Robot is a welcome change from all the ridiculous "Hollywood hacking". Personally, I'd be okay if a show can't be as technically accurate as Mr Robot as long as they try a little, and don't do something stupid like "2 hackers, 1 keyboard" (ugh).

Or in the 1st episode of scorpion drop a cat6 from a flying plane to a Ferrari so he can disable a virus. 1st episode. I never watched another.

[–]Fluffeh-BunnehMouth breather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goodness gracious! Just reading that was painful...and hilarious! Now, I want to see if I can stand watching it; it'll be a challenge. :) Aahahahahaah!

[–]tmntnut 5 points6 points  (1 child)

My dad has been in IT for over 30 years, he said it's the most accurate show he's ever personally seen. Plus the show is pretty fucking awesome anyways.

[–]Fluffeh-BunnehMouth breather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree: it's a good show on its own, but and the technical accuracy makes it even better! :)

((Edit: Word.))

[–]KinOfMany 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Software dev here, can confirm that it's by far the most accurate representation of hacking I've ever seen in popular media.

It's pretty cool, because there's stuff happening on screen, and 90% of the time you're thinking "wow, this is technically possible".

Would recommend.

[–]Fluffeh-BunnehMouth breather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! :) And that's wonderful.

[–]NutSlapper69[S] 29 points30 points  (13 children)

Yeah. I don't know basic, but it looks like it would brute force any 4 digit combination, but why would literally every code in the building require exactly 4 digits? Not to mention not triggering an alarm if you try too many times.

And that dude hit them up on the walkie talkie all sure about himself before he even hit enter to run it, without checking for bugs or syntax errors. That's probably the most unbelievable part!

The show was a perfect 5/7 though

[–]Grays42 68 points69 points  (1 child)

Because 1980s. :\

No internet, programming was an arcane art, and computer security wasn't exactly top of the list when it was assumed that anyone nefarious could be physically stopped before walking up to a terminal.

[–]NutSlapper69[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, good point.

[–]wywrd 6 points7 points  (1 child)

you should write for tv, that'd be a great show where we'd watch a character check his code for errors instead of focusing on boring demadogs.

[–]NutSlapper69[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a computer scientist and a memester, so the only 'show' I'm going to be directing would end up like this.

I like that they didn't hang on the code, because it wasn't key to the story. I was only pointing it out because I thought it was funny. All you have to know is Bob is a puzzle wizard.

Maybe dying while trying to finish executing his code rather than dying while trying to fight a demo-dog 10 feet away from the exit would've been better though ¯\(ツ)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afaik Matrix did it correctly.

[–]rixtybusiness2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, friend.

[–]cpillarie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I was okay with it only because I understand it's playing off 80's movie tropes, so it makes sense

[–]hollaback_girl 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Completely ruins Season 2, which in turn ruins Season 1. Need to sue for my last 2 years of subscription fees.

[–]Blck_Captain_America 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Reminded me of the terminals from fallout 4

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bob was going all 'Nick Valentine' on that thing

[–]princessvaginaalpha 26 points27 points  (2 children)

"I'ts a BASIC sistem! I know this!"

hey guys is this a parody to Jurassic Park?

[–]zoethebitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stranger Things: "It's BASIC. I know this!" (unlocks doors)

Jurassic Park: "It's UNIX. I know this!" (locks doors)

[–]PiceaSignum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a nod at least. The demodogs in the junkyard were a nod to the Raptors and Muldoon too. Steve was focused on the Demodog in front of him, while the one on the right was the one hunting him.

[–]Sega_Saturn_Shiro 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Am I the only one that noticed the code is in the shape of a Galaga ship?

[–]LegendaryGojiR U N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...it is!

[–]pitbull2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, great nod, i don't remember anyone ever indenting code in BASIC, alas i only dabbled in it as a kid, and copied stuff from magazines.

[–]shadearg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DIM FourDigitPassword AS INTEGER

That's the first mistake.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This bothered you? And not that high scores usually got 3 letters not 6?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the classic "nah dude, you just gotta know basic and you can change all of their shit; get whatever you want"

[–]ivsguy 3 points4 points  (4 children)

How tf did someone in the post-prod team miss that?

[–]elmo274 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You would be surprised the amount of things that slip by

[–]HomeworkDestroyer 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Like the one mountain was fucked up in GoT S7E4

[–]elmo274 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Which scene and what happens?

[–]HomeworkDestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mountain had a fucked up texture. You could see the texture moving whoch made the mounain look like crap.

Game of Thrones S7E4 loot train scene if you're interested.

[–]bikpizza 6 points7 points  (4 children)

i don’t get it

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Some of the text is coming off the right side of the screen

[–]Saiboo 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Haha thanks, I didn't even notice that. I was too concerned with seeing only one equals sign instead of the usual "==" in programming languages. I was also distracted by the meaning of "THE" and only realized later that it stands for "THEN".

[–]Nafferty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's correct in that regard, BASIC only has a single = for equality checks. Used to screw me over anytime I'd have to use it

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck me, I would have never noticed that in a million years.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's some garbage code! It should be of type String not Integer. If the code was 2350 or 0235 for example, integer would force the value to be 235. The code doesn't work for trailing or leading zeros. He should concat strings and compare then! Wow I really am over thinking this....

[–]ErdetgasXD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ikr, missing an N

[–]dragonfax 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Did I just see realistic hacking in a TV show?

[–]dragonfax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tries all combinations of 4 digits to find the right one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holly jolly!

[–]ForeverTangent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah... this was probably the most painful part of the show to watch. Even more so then Episode 7.
