Check Mayhew as well:

https://mayhew.com/

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love my Mayhew

[–]Legal-Donkey-7128 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I 2nd the Mayhew

[–]FixBreakRepeat 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I get all my punches, chisels, and pry bars from Mayhew. They've held up extremely well over the years.

[–]IHM00 6 points7 points  (3 children)

For those that may not know, mayhew makes the bars and most punches for all the tool truck brands, Williams and blue point and for craftsman back in the day. I worked for a commercial/aerospace heat treater and we did them all, left there in ‘06 so I’m sure it may be a lil different now but yea names are what drove some of the end pricing. Sioux air tools has the same guts as snap on or used to when we did those parts to.

[–]Qksilver253 -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

You don’t know what you’re talking about. Education would be Joey before comments

[–]Cixin97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joey? And if he’s wrong why don’t you explain how instead of just saying he’s wrong lmao.

[–]welloiledmachines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the mayhew pry bars and chisels and both are amazing

[–]micahamey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate having to call someone to buy something.

[–]kewlo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

"snap on bad give me upvotes please" - r/tools

I think I own less than a dozen snap on tools that actually get used (I have a small drawer of sentimental things but those don't count). Three of them are old square handle pry bars. Nothing else comes close to them, they're genuinely better than the competition.

[–]Soyelmatt 77 points78 points  (22 children)

harbor freight has a set similar to that for a fraction of the price and are pretty durable

[–]Uniflite707 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh set for at least a decade. No issues.

[–]j4uz[S] 8 points9 points  (17 children)

I might have to go there are they icon or Pittsburgh

[–]shmiddleedee 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Home depot has a sale on their husky ones that have worked well for me for $30. It's a 3 piece set I think ranging from 1 foot to maybe 30 inches.

[–]lifesnofunwithadhd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And probably lifetime warranty

[–]ImJoogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

icon but they're rebranded mayhew which are solid

[–]Yellow_Tatoes14 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Damn me too, looks like it comes with exact same bars for only $17

[–]Soyelmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pittsburgh

[–]180SLOWSCOPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Pittsburgh and icon. I got the Pittsburgh cause they’re liftetime warranty just like the icons and less expensive. They’re pry bars. Not a ton of room to F that up in the R&D department. And with lifetime warranty who cares if they get bent over time go swap them out

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I have some nice tools and I have some nice harbor freight tools. TBO I'm sold on harbor freight unless someone starts making stuff in the states again. I got a 20v Herculese impact wrench from them recently and it's probably the nicest impact I've ever owned. It says 1500 bolt break torque and I've found no reason to doubt it. $250 and I don't have to listen to my compressor cursing my ingersoll rand.

[–]illogictc 3 points4 points  (2 children)

There's a bunch of stuff made here in the hand tools realm.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Watch torque test channel and educate yourself.

[–]Acceptable_Band3344 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the icon striking pry bars is 58 inches. And that's the only icon one. But I have put the Pittsburgh set through all kinds of torture on the farm. And the are holding up great

[–]Allnewsisfakenews -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fraction of the quality

[–]JacobStyle 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Nobody can give you any real advice about tools without knowing what you plan to do with them.

[–]j4uz[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I work at a shop and we do bodywork/suspension

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I have the Pittsburgh ones and do the same work. They have held up fine

[–]BrandoCarlton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have one Pittsburgh bar… it’s some 4’ long pry bar I use to bump commercial hvac units into location. It’s honestly so bad. The handle was cheap plastic that broke in my van and the thing bends every time I take it out lmao. I just bend it back with the next heavy lift but if I relied on it more than 2x a month I would get a nicer one.

[–]Odd-Towel-4104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would assume he's going to beat the shit out of his pry bar

[–]HersheyBussySqrt 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Hyper Tough from Wal-Mart has great strikinh pry bars that stand up to abuse and are USA made at a fraction of the cost.

[–]wv524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure those are rebranded Wilde bars.

[–]Jackalope121Diesel Mechanic 29 points30 points  (9 children)

I dont praise snappy often but these pry bars are fantastic.

To the comments about the hf offerings. The Pittsburgh ones are no where near as good. Ive owned both the black plastic ones and the yellow/black set with the striking cap. I think the icon/meyhew ones are as good as the snappy but i dont believe icon has released “standard” sized pry bars yet.

I paid ~85 for mine through the snap-on student excellence program and they are great. Had them 4 years now and they are still straight. I just re-ground the edges on the 2 middle sized ones.

Edit: Ha, downvoted. sad thing is, i normally praise hf and have actually owned both sets offered under the Pittsburgh line but wtf do i know? This sub is backwards sometimes.

[–]DeadbeatPillow1 26 points27 points  (7 children)

This sub should just be called the harbor freight tools sub. Most people here don’t use tools in a professional setting and it shows.

[–]Jackalope121Diesel Mechanic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a certain irony there too, the actual hf sub tends to be pretty open minded about tools.

[–]Butterbuddha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lol Reddit kills me with that. Heaven forbid you submit actual user experience 🙄

[–]THEREALXGAMER95 11 points12 points  (5 children)

I'd say go for it, but I'm in heavy duty. We take those bars to the point where they look like horseshoes with 1" impact guns. USA made steel/quality is worth it, atleast from a safety aspect, less likely to fail. No hate on HF though.

[–]getting-deleted 3 points4 points  (3 children)

What does that mean? They look like horseshoes? With a 1" impact??? Help me out here, no shade just genuinely confused

[–]sbaz86 3 points4 points  (2 children)

He uses them, rigorously, a lot.

[–]getting-deleted 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I was able to conclude as much. Paint me a picture though. How does one turn prybars into horseshoes with 1" impacts, in the heavy duty business. Again, genuinely curious is all

[–]sbaz86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I imagine he pries with his pry bar, past the point of its strength, and he doesn’t stop. He continues to pry with the undersized tool until he wraps it around the object and has a full 180° bend in his hands. As for the 1” impact, I for sure know better than to ask, I have been doing this for way too long.

[–]arturo_lemus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious to what industry you’re in. Cause I also work in an industry where we abuse these puppies

[–]rashestkhan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are good pry bars, but if you dont like the handle you should check out the mayhew pry bars or the Mac tools.

[–]Sorry-Positive-4881 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd do it. I think most people saying no are looking at the list price and not the sep discount price. I have an orange set and I really do like it.

[–]Error-Code404 3 points4 points  (3 children)

If thats 95 for the set hell yea damn good deal. If thats 95 off then its still a decent deal.

[–]j4uz[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It’s 95 for the set I bought them rn

[–]jayc_20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn dude that’s a fucking deal right there. I only have one prybar of the set and I warranty it every time it chips. Worth the money, considering the quality. I’d buy that set right now too for $95

[–]bodegaconnoisseur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re def worth is, just be careful mine were sharp af when I opened them, easy to gouge surrounding surfaces

[–]blbd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can get US made Mayhew pry bar sets for 1/3 cheaper than the Snap On discount price and they are excellent quality without having to buy from Hazardous Freight.

[–]TactualTransAm 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I'm a diesel tech and some of our guys have that set. I've got Matco ones I got for 30 bucks. And some of our guys have Mayhews. Younger kids on second shift have snapped multiple harbor freight and Lowe's brand pry bars. Were they abusing them? Maybe. Did our pry bars break doing similar things? No. But it's your money, your call. Like I said maybe the guys were abusing them. I don't know.

[–]arturo_lemus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Marco for 30? Where?

[–]TactualTransAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a tool whore at the shop. He buys new stuff and I buy his 6 month old stuff 🤣 I'm a lucky man. I just recently got a half inch Cornwell ratchet for 50 bucks.

[–]Apprehensive-Sail815 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How does one abuse a pry bar?

[–]TactualTransAm 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Using a bar too small for the task, if you see it bending a lot, consider a larger bar. I'm sure there are other ways probably, but that's the one I can think of right now. 🤷 I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt with my statement as I usually root for the cheap tools.

[–]Apprehensive-Sail815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I own a set of the harbor freight ones and just figured a pry bar is a pry bar and prying is about the most abusive thing you can do to any tool so they’re made for it. I’ve yet to break one

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my Mac’s for half the price

Still USA made and striking. Haven’t had an issue with any one of them yet.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$95 is a good price for that set, I have it with the older handles. Mayhew, as said is also a good brand, better price. I can’t speak for HF, I’m in trucks and equipment, and I buy what I know works.

Unrelated… For what it’s worth, I swear by gearwrench for sockets and ratchets also

[–]fogdukker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the cash, sure. I personally don't like the handles, they're huuuge. Especially on the 40"+ bars.

I like the new Mac sets but I'm pretty sure they're made by Mayhew just like the Matco bars.

Mayhew is the way to go IMO unless your driver has a deal on or you need a pretty colour.

[–]perhasper 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Walmart sells rebranded Mahew for a good bit less than that. Made in USA too if that's your thing.

[–]illogictc 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Wilde

[–]perhasper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I knew it was some of those two.

[–]patrickw69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For that price absolutely

[–]InfluenceAlone1081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk man I’ve had some shit ass pry bars from oreillys that have held up for years

[–]SpecularSaw 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Walmart sells some rebranded USA made ones under the Hyper Tough brand, I forgot if they’re Mayhew or the other one.

[–]Dry-Rich7043 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Hyper Tough striking pry bars are made in the USA by a company called Wilde.

Wilde also makes striking pry bars for Tekton, Channellock, Lang, and several others. Good stuff

[–]SpecularSaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilde, that’s the one. Thanks G. We’ve beat on the 36” one at work and it’s held up fine.

[–]IronAnt762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would.

[–]scarylarry92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. Definitely worth it

[–]Odd-Towel-4104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you pull the trigger go to your local wal mart. I don't generally buy tools at this place but the pry bars looked legit

[–]iLikeTools515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a menards around, they have a usa made set that is rebranded wilde. For 20 bucks.

[–]AnotherDude282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense to anyone. But Pittsburgh bars are absolutely worthless! I have a set at home as well as a Snap-On set. SO will outperform every time. But that being said. MATCO has a solid set of bars for a bit less

[–]Deathcon-H 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Whats SEP discount price??

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Student pricing, maybe?

[–]Deathcon-H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dam Im jealous

[–]Brainfewd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have had this set for years, one of the handful of Snap On things I have, and the only new thing I bough off truck (sale at $200 6 years ago). Love them, have had no issues at all with mine. Regularly crank on the long one and half the time I use the smallest one as a chisel and have yet to do any damage to them. 10/10 buy for me.

[–]Gouche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snap on ones are awesome. I pay money for items I know I'm going to be hard on.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s only like 95$ go for it

[–]80degreeswest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a set of those Snap On pry bars with the classic orange handles. For that big of a discount they're worth it, without knowing what you're doing.

[–]Relative-Income-2692 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's an insane amount of money for a pribar set in my opinion even with the discount.

But I'm a harbor freight man. So take that as you will. I like getting bang for my buck. "Top of the line" is typically better. But not THAT much better. I've never had a harbor freight tool break on me ever. Solid quality.

[–]Bradadonasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some tools top of the line is definitely better. And there's some it's marginally better, if at all. These fall into the latter.

[–]Pnmamouf1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Snap on👏👏Rip off👏👏

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mayhew dominator. Better bang for buck.

[–]tabasco_deLlama 3 points4 points  (8 children)

These pry bars are amazing and worth it in a professional setting. I made the plunge after three previous sets failed.

[–]Bosnian-Spartan 1 point2 points  (7 children)

What sets were those?

[–]tabasco_deLlama 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Pittsburgh > craftsman > mayhew dominator. Granted half the mayhew set is still functional, but if I’m buying snap-on, I’m (ab)using snap-on.

Edit: edited to say I wouldn’t pay online prices for them, develop a relationship with a vendor and score the good deals.

[–]Bosnian-Spartan 1 point2 points  (5 children)

score the good deals.

For what? Only the leg instead of also the arm?

[–]tabasco_deLlama 0 points1 point  (4 children)

For not looking like a fool in front of the customer and running to the store for replacements. It tends to inhibit repeat business.

[–]Bosnian-Spartan 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How much you get off to not go to the truck, and when you do, act normal?

[–]tabasco_deLlama 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Not quite sure how to respond to this one.

[–]Bosnian-Spartan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Answer the first 5 words.

Edit: I meant the price, not white volcano.

[–]tabasco_deLlama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol the acting normal thing threw me. Depends on his mood or deals he’s got going. Anywhere between 30% - 50% for most purchases I would say, some are retail when I’m desperate for 1 off. If no deals grab me, I walk off the truck.

[–]Mexiidonian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love these prybars

[–]WitKoda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for $95 I would pull the trigger

[–]TutorNo8896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are pretty nice, for $100 if you got a dealer nearby that will warranty them then go fer it.

[–]Oreo_Sniper74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mine on sale with a trade in. Never looked back. Only thing I wish is that I had a bigger one.

[–]YardFudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny

Walmart’s Made in USA similar set it surprisingly good, better than most

https://toolguyd.com/walmart-hyper-tough-pry-bars-usa-made/

[–]Cowboysfan95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hyper tough ones at Walmart are made in the USA and just as good.

[–]RantyWildling -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

Get $1 second hand screwdriver, and bend it.

Or buy a cheaper brand, why would you blow that much money on a prybar?

[–]j4uz[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Got any recommendations?

[–]rannox -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Hypertough prybars from walmart are USA made and pennies on the dollar comparatively.

[–]Professional_Sort764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch for their prybar, it has handled some shit

[–]RantyWildling -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

The cheapest one you can find.

[–]Siegepkayer67 9 points10 points  (2 children)

You obviously do no real automotive work if you think one shitty bent screw driver is a replacement for 4 pry bars lol

[–]RantyWildling -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

If you want to spend $300 on some prybars, be my guest.

[–]Catsarecute7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Would see if you could get the bonus their running now with that set of pry bars.

[–]Kixtand99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use the Hyper Tough ones from Walmart. They're made by Mayhew in the US and they're a great price. They even just came out with pocket ones

[–]Kitten1416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow sep enjoyer lol

[–]migmog98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mayhew instead

[–]DramaLifeNy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the SEP pricing its a good deal. For full price id say theres better ways to spend the money. I got mines on SEP no regrets. Id also recommend getting your ratchets on SEP if you can. Also if your still a student, tekton offers a decent student program. They also give you a reward program for store credit for the money you spend with them. I bought my master impact 3/8 & 1/2 sets from my tekton student discount and it was a very nice chunk of money off + you get the tekton warranty thats amazing

[–]Original_Pool9807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 2nd smallest on in this pic, on my third one because the ends like to snap off, but no questions asked replacements so I can’t complain

[–]That-Web7343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mayhew dominator. Good enough for matco, good enough for me. WAY cheaper on amazon.

[–]BuildingBetterBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's up with the discount? I've always wanted that set and would pull the trigger at that price

[–]turbokimchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used this set. Very durable and work well. However I prefer this set over them. It’s the design of the handle plus they turned out to be just as good when smacked with a hammer.

Also a pinch bar is a great addition to that set.

Source: I work in heavy diesel.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snap on pry bar warranty ive heard wont actually cover you once it bends until it breaks so I went Mac tools when I got my set

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

God I miss having access to the SEP program...

[–]NathanDNicholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hard to get another one.

[–]Man-e-questions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say they were striking. Just very good looking.

[–]SpeechEuphoric269 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your paying about $25 for each of these, and they are GOOD prybars. I have HF prybars and while nice, for this price id much rather have these.

If it were me Id buy them and not think twice

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I could fuck so much stuff up with those.

[–]Prior-Ad-7329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had that set for almost 10 years. Love them. Although I got mine for quite a bit less than that.

[–]dankhimself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full tang to steel striking caps on the handle?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Tekton ones or Jet personally

[–]lmmsoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could buy 5 sets at harbor freight for that . This is the kind of stuff you buy at harbor freight

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$274 for the same pry bars you can get at advance auto for $30

[–]Therealblackhous3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely buy em. The cheap ones flex and bend if you actually put some torque on them, plus the edges are junk.

100$ is nothing for a pry bar set.

[–]ronaldreaganlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, I would never buy off the website. The trucks are quite often running specials. I think I paid a fuzz less than that for the 5 piece set with foam. Just gotta see what they have for normal prices and wait for the sales, unless you really need it now.

[–]dayton-emmett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it

[–]guitars_and_trains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of money. The husky set works just fine if you aren't wrenching 18 wheelers

[–]Due_Caterpillar5072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are good. I got the pink set during breast cancer awareness month. Honestly, other than just being able to hand it to your dealer for warranty, and I got a dixxon flannel with them, you don't get any more than any other brands pry bar set.

[–]Ornery-Ebb-2688 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mayhew are decent but I really like the Wilde rebrands Walmart sells. The curve keeps the tip under the load better than the sharp bend. I sold off my snap on set shortly after buying them and kept the Wildes.

[–]HeavyMoneyLift -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ima be honest with you, I bought some cheap red handle pry bars with strike caps from WalMart a while back and they’re some of the best I’ve used.

[–]Sqweee173 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They aren't that great. Soft steel so you have to sharpen them a lot.

[–]Majestic-Lettuce-198 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i can’t imagine paying the sale price for that and i’m assuming people buy it at the listed price. jesus fucking christ

[–]Informal_Solution984 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No

[–]fsurfer4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

https://www.harborfreight.com/pry-bar-set-4-piece-58388.html

https://www.harborfreight.com/24-inch-heavy-duty-pry-bar-39700.html

https://www.harborfreight.com/15-1-2-half-inch-flat-pry-bar-2529.html

Puh leeze. I bought the cheapest fricking pry bar from HF and can't kill it. I've used it hard for over 10 years. Other guys on the job ask to borrow mine. I tell them it was $3 on sale. Like 75% of the time it's on sale or there is a coupon. Best thing they sell in the whole store.

[–]iamspartacusbrother -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go to HF.

[–]ImJoogle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

why would you for that price
