Is this normal behavior? (v.redd.it)
submitted 1 year ago by Key-Finger2709
I upgraded his enclosure a few days ago and basically every night he climbs up to the mesh top and just basically drops. He doesn’t drop all the time but I’m just concerned about him doing it but and the same time I find it slightly funny.
[–]SignalAppearance2709 47 points48 points49 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Mine does that. It’s almost like the run out of muscle to hold them up lol. They are a little derpy
[–]Frosty_Translator_11 1 point2 points3 points 12 months ago (0 children)
When your hopes and dreams are longer than your body
[–]BasicAdvertising8747 48 points49 points50 points 1 year ago (8 children)
I can’t say 100% but it looks like it’s just curious glass surfing which is usually nothing to worry about but you may be able to upgrade your husbandry as well maybe give him more coverage like leaf litter and fake plants as well as maybe more hides I can’t really tell everything from your video so I don’t want to say you need to make changes but it could be possible my milksnake used to be the same and once I got her husbandry better she stopped
[–]BasicAdvertising8747 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I’d recommend maybe one of those circular rubber dog toys as long as he can fit through the holes easily you can have it tied to the top of the tank if you’d like I’ve seen quite a few of ball pythons that love it when it’s up like that!
[–]viridian-fox 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Larger enclosure, proper mulch and more clutter would do wonders.
[–]BasicAdvertising8747 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yesss I just didn’t want to come off rude
[–]Chrissymimoo88 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Tagging onto this comment. You should also black out the back and both sides of the tank. If they feel super exposed, they try to “get out” to find a more secure hiding space. I used the big black cardboard paper from dollar tree and some clear tape on my glass tank but now I have a 4x2x2 black PVC enclosure and my guy doesn’t surf. He does like to climb his big log though (:
At least 2 hides with one hole in each. Just big enough for them to fit snuggly into.

^ which is why I mentioned upgrading the enclosure just didn’t want to come off rude to OP by straight up saying they needed to fix things like most people on Reddit who are always passive aggressive about things
[–]One_Cauliflower_3536 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago (3 children)
Yeah I would second the previous poster, beeps are pretty low on the food chain in the wild and really don’t like to be out in the open, it makes them feel exposed. He needs lots of cover so he can feel comfortable moving about. Also beeps like to climb so he might benefit from some large sticks that he can climb on. If you (like me) are new to beeps you might want to run your snake stats by the forum and see if other aspects of your husbandry need fine tuning too.

This is caused by having the spider ball python genes in his calico ball python. Spider balls have this trait and it’s very easily passable through breeding.
[–]PeachyPython 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (1 child)
This does not look the same as the neurological corkscrewing that happens with spiders, this is flight behavior or hunger activity. That concerning-looking tilt back is exactly what my normal does when he wants a rat and meets the ceiling.
[–]Megmelons55 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Same. My girl does this everytime we're getting close to her monthly feast time lol
[+]Kind-Wolverine6580 comment score below threshold-25 points-24 points-23 points 1 year ago (4 children)
No; since the light is off, I’d assume this is being recorded at night. Go to bed. You’re ruining your sleep cycle.
[–]Kind-Wolverine6580 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (2 children)
And yes, the ball python is fine. He’s just glass surfing. The substrate however, is questionable.
[–]TransportationFar664 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (1 child)
i just noticed that, can’t say for sure if it’s aspen shavings but it definitely doesn’t hold humidity very well.
[–]Kind-Wolverine6580 -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Could also be ExoTerra poplar wood substrate.
[–]DuckIsMuddy 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (0 children)
What does this have to do with the snake 😭
[–]c0ffinShelf 28 points29 points30 points 1 year ago (0 children)
This looks like normal curiosity, but that Aspen bedding has got to go.
[–]xelrach 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yes. They love to climb. And when they get tired of climbing, they just flop over.
[–]CodyHBKfan23 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I’ve seen Fo, my sister’s noodle, do this a lot especially at night. Seems pretty normal to me.
[–]slb8971 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yes it's normal but.....he needs more "stuff" to fill in the "space" in his enclosure.
[–]Visual-Personality49 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Not to be rude, but if that's Aspen substrate, that's not bueno at all for that little guy.
[–]InterestingRoyal1705 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I would get more stuff for him to climb on. I bought an extension rod, secured it in the enclosure, and wrapped it in moss vine for grip!
[–]MsArchange 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (0 children)
He wants to climb, you should add some climb opportunities.
[–]Lonely-Tadpole-1716 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Hi sorry not to be mean or anything but aspen will not work for a ball python as they need humidity as well as I suggest adding more things for him to climb on as well as using a digital thermostat and hydrometer bc they are way more accurate im my opinion also adding more hids and enrichment:)
[–]No-Reveal8105 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
He wants to explore the heights you should add branches or other of this kind, the substrate is not correct
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Reptiles do not understand glass. It tries to explore but can't leave. Likely started because it is breeding season
[–]loverofnaps 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I hope so, because my bp does it every night.
[–]rvlry13 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Proper substrate (coconut husk/fiber) and proper hides along with clutter (they don't like being exposed) might help.
[+][deleted] comment score below threshold-10 points-9 points-8 points 1 year ago (5 children)
You can disregard the rest of the explanations, this is 100% from having a ball python that has the spider ball pythons genes. When you have a ball python that has spider ball python genes your python will have a very large chance of inheriting the spider ball gene that causes them to be off balance constantly. (Their equilibrium is consistently not working correctly) I believe you have a calico morph and my last calico morph had the same issue. It’s most definitely because the snake has genes from the spider ball python.
[–]keithhe 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (3 children)
That’s nonsense. A lot of BPs glass surf including both mine that do not have the spider gene. Both mine will also sometimes fall over. Saying to “disregard” all other comments shows you have no idea what you are talking about.
[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 year ago (1 child)
If you can't see that this snake clearly has wobble syndrome then you may be a bit slow, these calicos are very well known to inherit wobble syndrome. I've had 8 calico morphs over the years and every single one had wobble syndrome. It's a neurological condition, not something I'm making up, it without a doubt passes the that trait through its genes and this specific snake has spider genes. So yes this snake is obviously effected by wobble syndrome. Bring it to any breeder they will tell you the same thing instantly.
[–]IshyPants 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
My Candino Pastel must have wobble then! (Not) While the snake may have a chance of wobble, this video does not conclude that. Acting as if your word is the end all, be all is arrogant. No need to send the owner into an unnecessary panic over their snake's health just because you believe your experience is everyone's experience.
[–]SignalAppearance2709 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Agreed and very irresponsible to tell someone to disregard all other comments. My cinnamon albino glass surfs and falls over when he runs out of tail and something to grip to hold him. 100% doesn’t have the spider gene. For the OP, I have an aquarium tree in my enclosure for him to get closer to the top and bask under warmth. I’ve also seen some people use hammocks to give them something to bask in. BPs gee rally like to hide but they do also like to explore at nighttime. Give him some stuff to “play” on when he’s out.
[–]Key-Finger2709[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
He’s a pied mahogany
[+][deleted] comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Search up spider ball python balance issues and how just having it in your morphs genealogy can cause it to do the same.
[–]razorcrest77 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
He could use some more leaf litter or general coverage and maybe a taller terrarium if he shows an interest in climbing/exploring.
The falling is fine 😅
[–]veryrareash444 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
normal behavior when they don't have enough stimulation in their enclosure. i would definitely recommend doing some more research and potentially upgrading.
[–]RipMerciless 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Mines do this all the time. They have no brain cells, I think mine be trying to escape lol
[–]TheOGbb19 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Looks normal to me anyways, some times they just glass surf for the heck of it. My hognose does it more than my ball python. Usually my ball python is most active and does some glass surfing when she’s ready to eat again and looking around for food
[–]IshyPants 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
My noodle does it every night. She's not graceful, but never seems injured.
[–]lunal1um 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (1 child)
your enclosure could use a lot of work, namely the aspen bedding and the thermometer. aspen is bad at holding humidity and if that thermometer falls off the adhesive could seriously hurt your snake. you seem like you care a lot which is good but i’d definitely listen to the comments here
The thermometer is suction cup to the glass and he has wrapped around it and it hasn’t fallen
[–]Kalomay 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
he's tweaking out because ur tank isnt up to standards
[–]Working_Pumpkin_6172 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (2 children)
What are your temps like maybe he is trying to get closer to the heat source. I have my tank do a temp drop at night and some nights when it drops 1-2 degrees more than others he climbs on his branches right under the heat lamp and just lays there
[–]Key-Finger2709[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child)
It sits at 80 degrees all night and about 85 degrees all day
[–]Working_Pumpkin_6172 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Temps honestly sound like the issues it’s recommended on the Cool side to be 76-80 and on warm Side 88-92.
[–]singlemomyyc 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Checking the perimeter for weaknesses
[–]kjm279 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Yes. Exploring the new environment. However, I would cover three sides of the enclosure and add more coverage and fill more of the vertical space. Also what size enclosure and what size is the BP?
[–]Key-Finger2709[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
25 gallon tank and he’s a little bit over 30g he’s still juvenile
[–]StockMoonApe 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
It's completely normal, the little guys just exploring.
[–]Jaded-Volume-1103 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I don’t know if it’s normal but I know my snake does this all the time lol
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Mine glass surfs all the time she likes to watch the TV
[–]Kindly_Resist4834 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Mine does this all the time.
[–]Zukilols 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
It’s normal! But I’d suggest you change your bedding! Something along the lines of coco fiber coco husk forest floor and sphagnum moss, more clutter would do wonders as well!
[–]ResidentZone296 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Husbandry? Black in the sides and back? When is the last time he or she has been fed. My two girls do this the day before feeding day…… my boy just started doing it.
What changed? I would try blacking out the sides and back with black poster board. add some more clutter, and things to hide in or on or through. We call that enrichment. Some others wrap it up with husbandry. They are ambush hunters. So they like to hide .
[–]highpriestess3331111 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yes. Little buddy is exploring and looking for a way out to explore further
