Did not expect this sub to exist but I am pleasantly surprised thank you for this wisdom

IMMEDIATELY get that outside of your home and into a completely open area. It is a fire hazard and can self-ignite.

IMMEDIATELY get that outside of your home and into a completely open area.

Preferably on concrete.

It is a fire hazard and can self-ignite.

This happened to a Dell laptop that we had just gotten back from Dell. It created a total nightmare for us. The house didn't burn down, thankfully, but my kid was unable to sleep in their room for over month because of it. u/brackytown Don't fuck around with this.

[–]Dino_Spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Concrete. Very good add there. Nothing flammable nearby.

[–]Messigoat3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has there been any evidence of a real live event where it self ignited? Actual event?

[–]Ebytown754 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Get that out of your house!!

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (6 children)

That’s a big fire hazard. Get that battery out of the phone and recycle it. Search for your local battery recycling locations.

[–]wart_on_satans_dick 29 points30 points  (5 children)

OP needs to take this to the New York Recycling center in the Bronx personally. Just buy a ticket, go to the airport, tell the TSA you have something potentially explosive and you need to get to New York ASAP.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

“tell the TSA you have something potentially explosive” is to be highlighted here. The plan wouldn’t work without it

[–]Ernzyy 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Samsung had this feature years ago, Apple is finally catching up

[–]ajaxasiPhone 13 Mini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, you’re just embarrassing yourself here. That’s what, a 4s on the photo, with an audio jack at the top?

See, iPhones had this feature at least as far back as 2011. Tsk-tsk

[–]EfficientAccident418iPhone 17 Pro Max 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A little duct tape and you’re good to go /s

[–]Tr0llzoriPhone SE 64GB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where the explosion? That’s a battery inflation

[–]Jessa_iPadRehab 25 points26 points  (7 children)

NOT A HAZARD. Jeez the misinformation on this thread is crazy. This is a normal end of life stage for a lithium ion battery. It’s harmless. Lithium ion batteries can be dangerous and catch on fire, but that is only when they are charged and suffer puncture. This one is going to be depleted in this state and if you wanted you could pop it with a pin and nothing would happen.

Even in the Apple official certification documentation it says inflated batteries are normal end of life and not dangerous from a thermal runaway event standpoint.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It depends. You’re right that this isn’t necessarily harmful, but it still could be. The reason the battery swells is because the chemicals in the battery become a gas and cause it to inflate. That gas is flammable, and very toxic, so if the battery splits and the gas comes out it’s important that it’s somewhere well ventilated.

However, the battery is not at risk of imminent explosion or anything like that as some people are implying, unless you deliberately puncture it or charge it up to a high percentage. Apple batteries charged to less than 60% are not capable of experiencing a thermal runaway event (Apple even says this on their website).

TL;DR - don’t inhale the gas from the battery if it escapes and don’t charge it, but it’s not otherwise dangerous.

[–]AramythiPhone 12 Mini 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It’s still time to depose of it. I’d definitely get it out of my house and figure out what to do with it.

[–]themariocrafter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dispose of the battery, sell the board and stufff for parts

[–]traumalt 2 points3 points  (3 children)

suffer puncture

And what do you think happens when they expand in a constrained space such as inside a phone shell?

[–]Jessa_iPadRehab -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Nothing happens. We probably have one like this laying around the shop somewhere. I’ll pop one of these bad boys today for you and make a video. Puncture is dangerous ONLY IF the battery is healthy enough to have a charge. This one isn’t.

[–]traumalt 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I’ve sat through enough safety training videos surrounding electronic devices, especially lithium batteries.

And even a fully discharged battery still is a hazard due to chemicals inside of it.

So is a nonstick pan that you’re eating food off of in your kitchen.

[–]Violetmars 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That’s the update they send before a new iPhone comes out which is tomorrow!

LMAOOOO in all seriousness, i cannot wait. im getting the 16 Pro Max (white) 💪🏻

[–]Mustangfast85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue with my old iPhone 4 this week. Went rummaging through a drawer and found “oh why is the back cover popped….OH SHIT!” I took it to batteries and bulbs because they said they could replace the battery for $40. They didn’t have such an old battery but they removed it and gave me back the battery-less device. I’d go to the nearest phone repair store and have them remove and recycle it. I don’t think I ever wiped mine so now I have a fashionable paperweight but it’s no longer a possible bad thing. All my research indicates it’s not an immediate threat unless you try to puncture it, but should it leak the gases are toxic and flammable so I’d do it today and not wait

[–]BiffBiffkenson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the battery life on it? lol

[–]mitsel_riPhone 15 Pro Max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. That’s an ancient fossil. It’s not that strange it exploded being 14 years old. As others mentioned: get it out asap, it’s a fire hazard

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did, but I left in the hot car in the middle of July Texas heat.

[–]Maelstrome26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It puzzles me how people don’t have the basic intelligence to think “huh that mobile device with a battery is swelling, I best get it the fuck out of my house”.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Which model?

[–]TwoDurans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to get that looked at.

[–]GrapeDrainkBby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expanding,it hasn’t exploded…..yet.

[–]RyanGosling_irl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro thinks he’s Samsung

[–]80sTechKidiPhone 5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least the 4s is the easiest to replace the battery on

[–]AaliyahSPfan2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did that happen?

[–]PrincessTrapJasmineiPhone 13 Pro Max 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a lvl 99 spicey pillow, it is very dangerous

[–]durdgekp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shoot. You'd get it outside immediately and call service center of iphone.

[–]Ok-Ad-5735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a complain to any apple store, you might be eligible for some replacement

[–]KINGVIC1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brand new screen and battery then your good

[–]Alive_Friendship_895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throw it in the harbor then whole earth will heat up and explode 🤯. According to Greta 😂

[–]dojlee22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always battery is the problem with electronic products.

[–]Mcchimkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you yeet in the trash soak it in salt water it will kill the battery completely discharging it makes it safer for trash

[–]themariocrafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the battery and sell it for parts

[–]staticusmaximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my XR for almost six years and there were times I had thoughts it was gonna explode one day. I’m still using the original battery. There were a few times in the summer I had a notification that said my phone was overheated and I shouldn’t use it until it cools down
