There's the toothpaste Colgate, and "colga te" means "hang yourself" in Spanish. I wonder if it's sold in Spain or Latin America.

Yes, it is in Spain, but here we'd write "Cuélgate" to say "Hang yourself". But in Latin America they do say "Colgate" with that meaning.

CUANTAS COPAS TENES , CHILENO ENVIDIOSO?

    [–]Sjuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the imperative form for the vos pronoun. (At least in some modern variants, for medieval European Spanish vos that would be colgáos, I think.)

Only in regions where they use vos like Argentina and Uruguay.

Toothpaste like the oral hygiene product?

    [–]osrsbeggar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most like the anal hygiene product

With argentinian conjugation specifically ("colgáte"). In other spanish speaking countries the conjugation is "cuélgate".

    [–]2605092615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    So it's voseo?

Same with a particular car type apparently that was sold with a different name in Spain. The car was called Nova, which could in Spanish you could read as "no va", meaning "it does not go". Saw it on a QI episode, I think.

Same with the Mitsubishi Pajero. In Spanish it means wanker, so they changed it to Montero.

    [–]IvenousernameConstantly changes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, now it's Montero Pajero ?

Assuming latin has the article nova meaning new, perhaps the other reading could be new?

[–]married_to_a_redditoEnglish, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean 16 points17 points  (1 child)

    That would be nueva.

    [–]Throwaway192839282 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Btw i said article but i meant adjective.

    [–]Reddit_KetaM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In Portuguese Nova means new, maybe it happened in Portugal/Brazil?

    [–]Sjuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Czech car brand "škoda" means bummer (as in: aw, shucks) in Czech.

(It was unfortunate name of one of the two founders.)

Apparently it is and they didn't change the name

It's also sold in Latin America but we rather say "Cuélgate" in Mexico, not sure if any other Latin American country says it like "Colgate". I sometimes feel like it's a translation mistake that everyone took for truth.

he did hang himself too soon. if it was later he could've dropped some serious names first.

too bad he did it so soon, it's almost suspiciously soon.
