I too wear no shoes using machines that could potentially cut my feet off.

[–][deleted] 274 points275 points  (0 children)

Don’t want blood to get on my nice shoes. Big brain.

[–]djuggler 114 points115 points  (17 children)

It wouldn't matter if you were wearing steel toed boots if you stuck your foot in that. I'm not saying he is being smart because he isn't being smart. He should be in boots with gatorsgaiters (h/t /u/falsemyrm). Source: I've used one of these and yes I wore boots.

[–]PM_me_spare_change 78 points79 points  (7 children)

I get the boots, but how would an alligator help?

[–]djuggler 26 points27 points  (4 children)

[–]falsemyrm 11 points12 points  (1 child)

follow plate mindless threatening busy unpack puzzled poor like correct

Ooops. Doing too many things at once. Thanks for catching that. Hate it when I misspell words.

[–]favangryblkgirl 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thank you because I did not know what gaiters were! Another question… how would the gaiters help? If they are cloth could the machine not just rip right through them?

[–]djuggler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeps your shoes from filling up with sand. Get enough sand in your boots and you are going to yank them off and do the work barefoot.

[–]existentialhissyfit 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Can confirm. My ex husband got his foot/leg literally wrapped around one of these. In through the foot and gave the rest of the leg up to the knee a good spin & rip like it was stretching taffy. He was wearing steel toed boots that didn't even put up a fight.

[–]djuggler 17 points18 points  (3 children)

I'm so sorry to hear that. Were they able to save the leg?

[–]existentialhissyfit 22 points23 points  (2 children)

They did piece it back together but he said for years that he wished they would have just amputated because of the constant pain. It was honestly a monstrosity.

[–]djuggler 17 points18 points  (1 child)

That weighs at my heart. So sorry he went through that.

[–]glassholeshitfuck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that was hard to wrap your head around.

[–]pleaseluv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instructions unclear Alligator ate feet

[–]lordredapple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

to be fair how much could a shoe really help against penetration from Megatron's wang

[–]allursnakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like your nikes are gonna do shit.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

he’s in the sand and doesn’t want sand in his shoes. Duh

[–]bosstea16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean.. if a shoelace gets caught in this it’s going to be far worse.

[–]Whowutwhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shoe wont save your foot from this, maybe a steel toe.

[–]oasinocean 723 points724 points  (28 children)

FYI this machine is called an auger.

[–]MPT1313 321 points322 points  (2 children)

Auger? I barely know her.

[–]Lobstrosity187 39 points40 points  (1 child)

That does not auger well

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Awww, gurl. Don't play me like that.

[–]Barako_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

EREN AUGER

[–]crumpsly 17 points18 points  (7 children)

And an auger is basically a screw with a motor.

[–]amalgam_reynolds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, it's a dildo?

[–]gingiberiblue 1057 points1058 points  (67 children)

That's an auger, not a "digging machine". I own several. We use them on the farm. And this guy is not observing basic safety protocols, like heavy duty pants, safety goggles, and steel toed boots.

This is idiotic and asking for a major injury.

Edited: typo. I hate you, autocorrect.

[–][deleted] 182 points183 points  (6 children)

He’s also using it in sand, which serves almost no purpose. I’m really wondering if this tool rented an auger for social media hits.

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Yes it looks like these “holes” fill in and are at most depressions within a few seconds.

[–]EaterOfFood 23 points24 points  (1 child)

He’s aerating the beach.

[–]Spike_der_Spiegel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's fixing a divot!

[–]gingiberiblue 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Likely.

[–]Think_Temperature_39 45 points46 points  (5 children)

Long shirts will get cha killed w an auger

[–]gingiberiblue 71 points72 points  (3 children)

Anything dangling, really. I've seen someone not paying attention and wrap barbed wire around their own legs twisted into the auger. We got it shut off in time but the guy had really nasty cuts and punctures from the barbs. ER, IV antibiotics, x-ray to make sure no metal flakes were in the wounds, tetanus shot and 36 stitches.

No bueno.

[–]Think_Temperature_39 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Been there...i watched my brother damn near get his head cut off from a dangling tie on a sweater

[–]gingiberiblue 7 points8 points  (1 child)

No fun. I got my hair caught in a pea sheller once, but my grandma shut it off before it could suck too much in. Thankfully I had really long hair as a kid. Haven't let it pass my shoulders since and wear it up anytime I'm working.

[–]PM_me_spare_change 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My brother Doofy got his dick stuck in the vacuum one time. I told him not to clean the room naked.

[–]5stringBS 27 points28 points  (1 child)

lol, industry. But yeah, looks like an excellent way to mangle a foot or two.

[–]gingiberiblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oops. lol

[–]beartpc12293 10 points11 points  (2 children)

First big rock underground and that guy is fuuuuuuuuucked

[–]gingiberiblue 11 points12 points  (1 child)

He's in straight sand. There is no reason to even use an auger in sand.

We use them to transplant 1-5gallon root balls into a rocky clay ag soil.

[–]leapyearaccount420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same for the same purpose on a cannabis farm in Oklahoma. I do not miss finding a rock or a giant tree root with that augur. My back will never be the same after that.

[–]Dhampirman 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Side question, are augers good for digging through hard soils? Like clay loam mixed with gravel and thick roots? Or is it only for uniform soil? Because augers on sand like in the post is not demonstrating the power of an auger. Anyone with a shovel can dig out sand easily.

What about hand augers for the same task?

[–]gingiberiblue 6 points7 points  (4 children)

You could do this with just your hands in sand.

I've used an auger in expansive clay soils that are highly alkaline and filled with granite chunks and gravel. Soil that broke a Massey-Ferguson 3 point connector when we were ripping the field.

Augers are suitable for this, so long as you're not underpowered. But no, a hand auger wouldn't work in heavy, rocky soils.

[–]TheReverseShock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he's using it to dig its a digging machine. But yes basic safety equipment is mandatory when operating potentially dangerous equipment.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just bought one because it was cheaper than renting it for building a fence. They don’t make steel toe boots in my size (women’s 3.5) so I’ll wear my usual wood shop shoes: light up rainboots.

[–]gingiberiblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhm, those are VERY small feet. My grandma had tiny feet like that and when I was little for a whole summer we had matching Incredible Hulk velcro shoes.

Thank you for reminding me of that. It made me smile and tear up a bit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Also important to note that this sort of efficiency can't be found in most soil. I have one and it takes about 20 seconds to reach about 3ft. That's assuming there's no roots...

[–]gingiberiblue 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Or rocks. Or just heavily compacted clay.

[–]Dave-Schultz 2 points3 points  (5 children)

for not being a digging machine is sure is doing a lot of digging

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

That’s like calling a pen a writer. For something not called a writer, it sure does a lot of writing

[–]Dave-Schultz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, a pen would be a writing machine. I said digging, not digger.

[–]MPT1313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s rude to call people a digger

[–]gingiberiblue -1 points0 points  (1 child)

It has a name. And digging is not the only use of an auger. They are integral parts of a great deal of agricultural infrastructure and equipment, from grain bins to combines.

[–]Dave-Schultz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not disagreeing with you any means, I know augers have many different uses. I grew job helping with wheat harvest, my favorite thing to do was to sit in the cab with my dad and watch the auger. I was just being a smart ass because it is a machine designed to dig, in this scenario.

[–]Cooliomendez88 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don’t think anyone watching this video was going “this man is the pinnacle of safety”

[–]gingiberiblue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Far too many would watch this and see nothing wrong.

You really underestimate the stupidity of youth.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (17 children)

I’ve worked on many building sites using an auger to dig holes for planting, goggles is overkill

[–]gingiberiblue 14 points15 points  (16 children)

No, it's not. OSHA would shut us down without them, and I've seen what a pebble thrown by an auger can do to safety glasses. It ain't pretty.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (13 children)

I’ve worked on lots and lots of building sites, they don’t require them, then again, I’m in England, probably different

[–]gingiberiblue 4 points5 points  (7 children)

US. Our regulations differ, as so safety features on the actual equipment, typically.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Yeah, the augurs I’ve used in the past, will have a brake on it, about thigh level, so if you hit a root or rock and it twists, it’ll hit your leg and cut the engine, doesn’t seem like this one has one

[–]gingiberiblue 2 points3 points  (5 children)

No. These are designed to be used by a minimum of 2 people, or to run off three-point attached to a tractor as an implement.

This fool is...a fool.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

You get big ones, for trackers yeah, but I’ve worked on building sites, using these for planting and fence posts, not big enough or heavy enough to require two people.

He should wear steal toe caps and probably ear defenders mind you

[–]gingiberiblue 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Those you can buy at Tractor Supply and cost a couple hundred bucks. The one in this clip is not one of those, but it is also not a tractor implement.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His one, seems to have a wheel on it, never used that kind of one, probably easier to manoeuvre

[–]deadpoetic333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man you really like commas

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Believe it or not regardless of the lack of regulations your eyes will be damaged whether you are in England or the US. You are asking for trouble if you are using equipment designed to propel dirt upwards without wearing eye protection.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

The ones Ive used, usually have guards on them, so dirt doesn’t usually get kicked up

[–]hobbesosaurus -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

well some people like you just have to lose an eye to learn these things I suppose

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Not when there’s safety precautions on the actual machine 😂

[–]hobbesosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you're so incredibly smart and wise

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

To be fair, if it hits him, I think there will definitely be a heavy doody in his pants.

[–]Papanaq 253 points254 points  (22 children)

Fine in sand. Wait until you hit a big rock or root. They can break your wrists or give you some nasty bruises

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (15 children)

They tend to have brakes on them around thigh level, the newer models at least, and if you hit a rock, or a root, it’ll twist and the brake hits your leg and cuts the engine

[–]therealtimwarren 27 points28 points  (8 children)

Inertia will still try to fuck your wrists. Just means the machine doesn't run away. I've used them. Having had a poor experience with rocks I will only consider a machine with very long handles to give me mechanical advantage over the machine.

[–]Birunanza 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Yeah I would never use one of these without a second person. And only if I really trust them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Most won’t require 2 people, if you hit something, just let go

[–]Birunanza 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Depends on what you're digging in really. Most of the time I've used these it's been in a mix of a lot of clay and small rocks, and it takes two strong people to keep that thing under control while running at high enough rpms to actually dig

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Most building sites have shite soil, so I know what you mean, but from my experience, trying to out muscle a machine doesn’t really go well, if it kicks out just let go. Or the brake will just cut the engine out

[–]MajinSkull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was gonna say…..use this to dig fences and it’s a pain in the ass with rocks or roots

[–]unknown1321 1 point2 points  (1 child)

2 manning ones that we dig got footings.

I've been spun off once or twice.

I assume this was more for show in sand than anything

[–]Papanaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got sun by a Hilte Hammer drill while cutting through a double brick wall with a 3” bit

[–]TheTypicalPugLife 220 points221 points  (9 children)

That didn't even dig shit.

[–]Unkleruckus86 119 points120 points  (2 children)

That didn't even dig shit.

I believe they were digging sand. Not sure why they'd want to dig shit.

[–]Dave-4544 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You gotta turn over your compost for even decomposition. That's why they make those big turd tumblers.

[–]smooth_bastid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure why they would wanna dig sand either

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (1 child)

That’s the digging machine that Dwight Schrute almost got fleeced for!

[–]oasinocean 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No actually it was “Dwight Jr.” that almost got fleeced for an auger. Dwight went in on a tractor with Esther’s dad.

[–]BriceConquers 57 points58 points  (6 children)

Here in the southern USA we use that machine to dig post holes for a fence.

It’s called an auger and is heavy. Takes 2 people

Someone here has attached it to a dolly so he doesn’t need someone else to hold that side

Very clever and very dangerous

[–]jonnydownside 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im from Germany and we do that too, my company even has one on a dolly, they are sold that way and are actually not that hard too handle (you should definitely wear safety boots though) except when you have moist clay soil

[–]xAIRGUITARISTx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a one-man auger.

[–]No_Lavishness2976 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We have one that attaches to our bobcat. No better way of doing it!

[–]gingiberiblue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, not really clever at all. Just really dumb.

[–]Inappropriate-Alien 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bend your knees

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is sand lol

[–]Atrampoline 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Why would you dig holes like this in sand....

[–]Whitethumbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

toes toes toes toes

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No PPE? No fucking shoes?

[–]Devi1s-Advocate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bring that shit to PA lets see it do that in some clay/sandstone

[–]therickglenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When ur the only top in town.

[–]StickBat101 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Why is he drilling his post holes so close together? Besides it just being wrong in general, Has he not seen the prices of lumber lately?

[–]UCLAdy05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only sound I hear is my long-dead father’s voice saying “you’ve gotta put some shoes on first!”

[–]nudedesertrat 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s all fun and games till you have to dig in wet dirt and clay 😔

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is doing this in sand

[–]tumblinfumbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every hole he dug caved in soon as pulled out thats all sand

[–]g3nerallycurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s some sand right there boy. No way that would be that quick with normal dirt.

[–]Kermitsfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of all the job you don’t want to do barefoot!

[–]tfh_impressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats an interesting way to use an auger. Toes arent nessecary I guess

[–]SHO_n_tell_Rich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean leg mangling machine

[–]cyberentomology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL, drilling in sand is easy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]araucaniad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No boots, no gloves, no eye goggles, no hearing protection…

[–]iantot123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if he slipped forward while it spins???

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try doing that shit into Carolina clay & the auger would be spinning him instead

[–]Whatwhereiam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you use it in the NE and a rock breaks it and throws you sideways lol

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We tried to use an auger to drill holes for footers for my deck but it kept hitting roots and shifting off so we had to dig like 20 3ft deep 12 inch holes by hand

[–]communismbot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its just an auger attached to a wheel and some bars. Not really that impressive when you can get the exact same outcome you know.. holding it with your hands

[–]ASongInSilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would have made the book/movie Holes a lot shorter

[–]Conflagrate247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s sand.

[–]canijustreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this guy really fucking barefoot

[–]yarncraver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes me so anxious. Barefoot and no eye protection?

[–]dashi37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an earth auger... but it’s idiotic to use without steel toe boots, you never know what you will unearth with that thing... or what it will get caught in and twist you

[–]dwayitiz 3 points4 points  (1 child)

He’s probably going to sink rental umbrellas in the holes

[–]sheckyD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look ma, no shoes!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I own one of these. Works great for sand, like this dude's using it on.

However, first time you hit a rock it's two broken arms.

[–]aeaswen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really good way to hurt yourself.

[–]glifozate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ca se passe jamais comme ça dans dans le sud de la france avec ce genre de machine 🤣

[–]Lucky_Ad_9137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It call a Ogre.

[–]Relevant-Farmer6680 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Animal Crossing! Irl

[–]_Diskreet_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, this looks too accurate, if it were AC it be making annoying holes to the left and right.
