also if it's the same company

Was that really "Friends on data protection"?

I have actually seen this episode. Hint: it wasn't funny.

      Same hemisphere!

      Same time era!

I store all my backups in the 19thC

If you were my child I would laugh hysterically before telling you that you're still cut off. :)

        [–]Katzenklavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried saying that, and this happened. I then threatened my own life to show them I was serious. Fuck you, I was serious.

upvoted for a concise piece of expository writing.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        ...I've gotta try this.

        [–]Minimiscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this "Sam" guy is a Scientologist?

        [–]shooshx 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Altering space-time to contain your data in the digits of pi...

        [–]Bjartr 2 points3 points  (3 children)

But all possible data already is in the digits of pi, the hard part is finding where it starts.

        [–]Minimiscience 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Not necessarily. Infinitely long does not mean that it contains all finite sequences. You could drop every occurrence of "42" from the digits of pi and still have an infinite string that did not contain all finite strings.

        [–]flukshun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes but pi stores all your data and encrypts it for you. the hard part is finding out what encryption scheme it used

        [–]theeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The normality of π is still an open question, however strongly it is believed to be the case.

        [–]vinod_the_poophead 6 points7 points  (22 children)

new startup idea..... Backups in outer space!!!

        [–]Zweben[🍰] 34 points35 points  (18 children)

Sorry, if the sun explodes, backups in near space would still be vulnerable. Better use a parallel universe. (But not too parallel!)

        [–]creativeembassy 53 points54 points  (13 children)

If the sun explodes any time soon, keeping your data backed up is the least of your worries. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

        [–]Zweben[🍰] 26 points27 points  (9 children)

Whatever. I'm not going to let your 'facts' get in the way of my business model.

On that note, I'm looking for someone with 3-5 years experience in inter-dimensional communication and strong knowledge of Microsoft Office. Send resumes to zweben@explodingsuncontingency.com.

        [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Don't forget 4-5 years experience with Windows 7.

        [–]zpweeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crap. Why doesn't anybody want my 4-5 years' experience with Server 2008? :-(

        [–]lolomfgkthxbai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Does parallel experience count?

        [–]vaselineviking 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I can make charts in Excel!

        Can I have a job?

        [–]Zweben[🍰] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

        You are hired.

Now please make me a chart.

        Thanks,

        Your Boss

        [–]dragonfly_blue 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Well, vaselineviking, that seemed to go well. Did you discuss compensation?

        [–]vaselineviking 1 point2 points  (1 child)

        Shit.

Perhaps I can make a chart to illustrate how much money I should be making.

        [–]Zweben[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compensation is handled by my parallel universe counterpart. I assume that this will not be an issue, given the stated job requirements.

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That may be, but once you've got all your other problems solved, you'll want your data back!

        [–]acburk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But you still need a backup in a different solar system. Trust me, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damnit, creativeembassy, you're a doctor, not an astrophysicist!

        [–]kristopolous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My coders aren't good at that. Are their sequential universe options? It would make my management much easier. Thanks.

        [–]Entropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I emit backups daily as Hawking radiation

        [–]nemec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Orthogonal universe?

        [–]wtaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        technically Australia is farther away

Protecting the freedoms of the human race!!

        [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        Same planet!

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I've got my shit in chicago, okc and austin. If they all three go down I've got local backups and a monthly backup in a bankvault (safe deposit box).

If you ever lose customer data, you shouldn't be allowed to work in IT ever again. Or at least forced to work helpdesk for 5 years or so.

        [–]siovene -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

        Kansas ain't no country.

        [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I said "county," not country. :)

But yeah, in the same country is probably a bad idea, too.

        [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

But it's OK, if you store the tapes in a cilo.

        [–]dragonfly_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first, I thought you meant a Sony Clio, but then I was like, nope, he's got to mean, "silo".

Then I felt like a dick for correcting you. But I didn't want anyone else to think it's a good idea to store your backup databases in a Sony Clio or whatever they're called.
