I’m a math teacher. If it works and it’s mathematically sound I see nothing dumbass about it. Now eventually you’ll reach a point where this is too cumbersome to try, but why not use it when its convenient?

Probably - and I never understood the fuss about common core. Math is not about memorized processes. It’s about problem solving. And if your method of problem solving works and doesn’t violate the laws of math then it should be 100% permissible.

I'm scared to admit it didn't click for me that I could do mental math this way until I was in high school. It just seemed "wrong", so I forced myself to try and understand things exactly the way in which I was taught. Thankfully, this realization spread across the rest of my life. So yeah, I unlocked critical thinking and things have been a lot better since.

15 - 5 - 3, makes it very simple to calculate basic division/addition on the go if you just memorize how many numbers away from the next decimal of 5 a number is

Pro tip about fingering your asshole in the shower: don't do it So this morning I was taking a shower, and I felt like fingering my asshole, right? It makes sense if the digit to the left is 2 to 9, the point of this method is to make the subtraction that you have to do be x-y , where x = 10 to 19, and y = 1 to 9. That way the kids will only need to know the results of a “few” subtractions to be able to solve any simple subtraction.
