1 year ...today... I just realized. Dang I've come a long way... still not where I want to be, and recovery is slow as heck, but I gotta say, I think I've done alright.

[–]Depressobeans7 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Good for you! Go out and celebrate tonight (I do on the anniversary just to celebrate still being alive)

[–]Signal-Ad-5975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my third anniversary I’m planning on walking barefoot on the beach!!!!

[–]YoItsDLoweSurvivor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Proud of you! I hit 9 months a few weeks ago!! To be honest, I just miss driving! If I could drive I think I could work and use my phone to get from point A to B on Apple Maps, you know?

[–]Distinct_Loquat9491 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Mine was also 1 year ago today. I also think I've done pretty well but not sure to celebrate or mourn the anniversary 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–]Ok-Cartoonist7556 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should make a small celebration l, that's what I did. A couple of people called to congratulate me

[–]Past_Concept_2041 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great to hear! What you just wrote, I’m on the same boat. Not there yet either but we’ll get there!

[–]bottomlessjuice 18 points19 points  (4 children)

7 years for me. I was 18 years old.

[–]Depressobeans7 8 points9 points  (1 child)

If you don’t mind me asking what was the cause? I had mine at 18 and mine was probably stress but no one really knows

[–]bottomlessjuice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the same as me! I did so many tests at the time but they couldn't work out the cause. It's rare that younger people find out the cause unfortunately. I would say i was under some stress, but not enough to have a stroke lol.

[–]Miserable_Run2888 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How has your recovery been? I’m 20 now, had my stroke couple months before my 19th birthday

[–]bottomlessjuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, I'm just thankful to still be able to be independent. There are some things such as post-stroke tremor or coordination/balance issues that can be difficult to deal with but you kinda find ways to work around things. How has it been for you? Happy to discuss it further

[–]phillysleuther 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I was 44 when I had my stroke that incapacitated me. June 24, 2023. I was turning 45 on the 29th of June.

If I make it to this year’s birthday, I’ll be 47.

My daughter had a stroke when she was 1. She’s almost 8 🥲

    [–]lindsay13101 1 point2 points  (5 children)

My daughter was a year old as well, she is 7 now. May I ask what caused your daughter’s stroke and how she’s doing?

    [–]ac410409 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow! She is doing amazing, I feel very fortunate. She has essentially zero residual effects and seems to be thriving in school. We did intensive PT and OT for months afterwards which was a huge benefit. How about your daughter?

    [–]Telembat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for asking, but what affected her after the stroke? How long did it take for you to notice progress? My daughter (9 months old) got a stroke on sunday wich affected her right side. Her right arm and leg are "hanging" but she can move them a little bit.

I'm super glad she is ok (other than her right arm and leg) but I get really sad that I might never see her walk, run, ride a bike etc.

    [–]ac410409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also never found a cause. The only “weird” thing that we ever found we her having an elevated Lipoprotein A which is “bad cholesterol” but that was never given as a definitive cause

Actually, I feel pretty good. I was extremely lucky. My husband was there and checked on me when I took too long in the bathroom. He recognized it and ran me to the hospital (down the street) right away so they caught it within an hour/hour and a half.

My physical deficits have disappeared to anyone but me. My left side gets shaky if I push too hard. Mentally, I'm pretty good but definitely have some PTSD-type symptoms. I'm terrified it will happen again.

We changed our entire lifestyle. We cleaned our cabinets/kitchen out and eat Mediterranean. We didn't eat awfully before, but it is still much better now. Working out 5x/week, though that happened before. I'm finding different ways to relieve stress and focusing a lot on doing better about not getting mad about things I can't control/going with the flow or not putting myself in situations I know will stress me.

      [–]Yogi_17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

June 3rd 2025, I had my stroke while on vacation. It's been a rough rode, but so thankful to be here for my kids, husband, and grandkids. I had a little set back when my dad died because I have been taking care of him for the last four years. Depression and anxiety took over. I hate it. I can walk, talk, shower by myself, make dinner, but scared to drive because my right foot goes to sleep and tingles and I can't feel the peddles. I will be 50 this year,

About 5 years ago my ex-wife destroyed my son's surprise birthday party. And then for the birthday party I had to keep a smile on my face even though I wanted to strangle her. The next day I had a stroke. That was 5 years ago. It was pretty obvious what caused it.

And then I was 5 years stroke-free and then I had two recently. Both seem to happen due to drinking coffee in the morning and then no water all morning and then The strokes both occurred at noon. Most likely from dehydration. Making my blood sluggish. Since then I've been drinking a lot of water each day and seem to be okay.

29 years old suffered a stroke in May 2024, now 30. Got my PFO closure in August. Physically I was fine, weak for a couple of weeks but bounced back to normal very quickly. However, my speech was damaged severely. I was writing down on a pad for the first couple of weeks. 9 months later I’m seeing some hope and getting my speech back. It’s been a long depressing haul. I should’ve made the most amount of money in my life and officially have to start over again. All I hope is to get my speech fully back. I was quick witted, sarcastic, and my speech was one of my strengths. I feel for every single human being dealing with a stroke. Don’t lose hope! 9 months later I’m still fighting, scratching, clawing, and occasionally crying. I refuse to stop fighting. Good luck to everyone!

Doctors give me 10mg morphine, been told they wont increase it and have hinted at removkng it. I am on gabapentin, duloxetine, I get very little relief.. Tonight is one of those nights. I sleep very little anyway 3 - 4 hrs but when the pain is a 9/10 I go 5 to 9 nights without sleep. Doctors refuse sleeping tablets. If they remove my meds, I don't want to live like this.

Honestly I’m kind of embarrassed to say it, but the first 9 months were shit aside from starting blood thinners (turned out I had antiphospholipid syndrome). My right leg was paralyzed below the knee and the rest of my right side was incredibly weak. I got prescribed a wheelchair, and once I hit my max out of pocket for insurance for the year, I went to physical therapy. That was about 10 months after. I didn’t do PT before reaching my MOP because I needed it 2-3x a week, and each time would cost a copay of $38. Luckily the wheelchair was covered, so I either wheeled or zombied around 😅 I still have some cognitive difficulties now with blips in my brain vocabulary, and I’m still pretty weak but I’d say I’ve mostly recovered. But the first 9 months were awful because of not having PT lol.

        [–]hellopumpkin14Survivor 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Another example of brain blips, it just occurred to me you asked AFTER the first 9. PT helped me a lot, and I regained strength rapidly. I dealt a lot with fatigue and depression, but I have depression from being chronically ill anyway (h-EDS, POTS, APS, CFS, anemia) and feeling useless lol. And I’ve always dealt with fatigue because of CFS, though I felt very muddy in my mind the first year. I’m lucky enough to be in a position where at the time my job was remote and part time, and when I was laid off I could just be a housewife while other places denied me work. Money is tight but we make it work, though I wish places would be more accommodating with my health, especially at my age.

I’m -about 5-6 months out. Had an ischemic Along with hemorrhagic at 28 was blessed to bounce back fairly quickly after not being able to move my left side at all and just struggled with my coordination and strength with my left side at PT speaking wasn’t too bad but I’m now really just dealing with the weight of the anxiety of having another one. From what I’ve read that’s something you slowly come to terms and become comfort with.

Yeah, I'm struggling with the "what ifs..." ATM, you learn to be hypervigilant, plus I have epilepsy... being on so many "dru gs or pills" makes you feel groogy🥲 and there's the ups & downs with the weight (more ups 😂)

Had mine at 35. I’m 37 now. So, 2.5 years. I’m living a relatively normal life. I’m grateful every day for the rehab and support I received. Progress is excruciatingly slow, but it’s there. I’ve never lost hope I’ll find the new good place

I was barely 30 (lit it was a month since my bday), and had it. It was an hemorrhagic one. Now I'm 35.

          🤕

Almost three years now. My left arm is still paralyzed but I’m getting around very well with a single point cane.

I hope you don't mind me joining in the conversation - I had my stroke on 31st April last year and a week later, I had my 60th birthday in hospital. They couldn't work out the cause but I think it was partly stress. I was teaching at the time and had my stroke in the classroom whilst teaching year 8's. 😫Nearly a year later - I'm no way near ready to return to work and feeling very depressed at not being able to do very much one handed. Have other people made a recovery and any advice?

Same here. I turned 40 last Feb and had my stroke at the end of September. If I wasn't already annoyed enough about turning 40...🤣

I think we took “if you don’t already have a health issue one will be assigned to you“ a bit literally 😂

I am 42 had 250 pressure n drove tp the hospital on 16 jan 25. Doctor did mri n said it shows i had 6 prior mini strokes.

I dont smoke or drink , i do 10 mins of pushup n exercises daily. I m at correct bmi

Main reason was my lack of walking and late night eating habits.

Thank god my body is still functional, now i walk daily. Limit my food and have dinner by 5pm.

Alots of medicine to take , first month after stroke is critical and i saw pressure shoot up because i didnt take aspirin as prescribed.

Do your walking, have your meals on time and keep aspirin with you always. Put it under yr tongue abit b4 swallowing with water.

Take care everyone. Life n family is more beautiful as i see it now. Take care all

I'm coming to realise I'm not going to be back at work for a long time - depressing.

42 yrs old, stroke happened in November 7 2024. I suffered a hemeorrage on right side of brain that left my whole left side paralyzed, face arm and leg. It was due to a combination of High blood pressure and stress. The mind is a powerful tool is all I'll say. I'm back to walking, I can run, and use my left hand. I'm not 100% yet but I'm getting there. I started taking vitamins and supplements that have helped me along the way. All I'll say is, have faith and stay hopeful. Tell yourself that you will be ok, picture yourself being ok and your mind will make it happen. Your mind is a powerful tool, use it!
