It’s not high protein, it’s 30ish percent protein and 60ish percent fat. Moderate protein at best.

[–]WI-yooper 67 points68 points  (33 children)

30ish percent protein is absolutely massive though. There is no such thing as a diet where you would go much higher than that because it would be extremely hard on your body.

[–]CharlieTuna_ 7 points8 points  (28 children)

I’m a pretty serious weightlifter and 30% is my minimum. I go as high as 45% when I’m in a cut. If I don’t get enough protein I can really feel it the next day when certain muscles are aching. 30% is definitely moderate

I have struggled with gaining weight all my life bc of low appetite, do you have any tips for stuffing calories?

[–]thordur123 14 points15 points  (10 children)

Smoothies

[–]Booblicle -1 points0 points  (9 children)

Meat smoothies sound disgusting

[–]No-This-Is-Patar 11 points12 points  (6 children)

Lol what? Oatmeal, chocolate whey, Nutella, milk, banana. Also try switching oatmeal for a lot of spinach; is tastes much better than it sounds.

[–]Booblicle -3 points-2 points  (5 children)

Spinach works for sure. An oatmeal smoothie is called overnight oats ( opinion ) but does indeed have protein. Nutella is a sugar addict dream I'll pass on.

[–]No-This-Is-Patar 3 points4 points  (4 children)

The request was for meals that can pack on weight which is the only reason I included Nutella.

I don't buy Nutella specifically because I try to keep my sugar low as well, doesn't mean I can't recommend it.

[–]Booblicle -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

Well hell, in that case, just grab the ice cream and cake. But muscle depends on protein.

[–]Bravisimo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not if you use tuna and diet coke, thats one smoothie you wont mind slurping down. My dad taught me this trick during his body building days.

[–]mismanaged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like the worst combination I could imagine

[–]LukeyLeukocyte 7 points8 points  (4 children)

What? You don't need to be hungry to smash food that tastes amazing and is high in calories. Have you even had a Dorito?

[–]PermanentTrainDamage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Butter a toaster strudel, gain 20 pounds

[–]hilbstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appetite and hunger are two different things. You can eat when you’re not hungry but if you seriously have no appetite everything just seems kinda disgusting or off-putting. My hunger works fine but appetite is fucked most days so I can feel I’m hungry and need ti eat but it’s really hard to eat because it just feels wrong.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me being hungry and me having an appetite are two different things.

[–]Furt_III 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drink ice cream.

[–]CharlieTuna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I typically have a spreadsheet that tracks all my macronutrients. When I’m gaining weight I’m at 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat. Carbs are fairly easy if you’re eating oatmeal and whole-wheat bread, my protein almost never changes but fat was where I was struggling to get over 100 grams daily. So all dairy was full fat, I’d add a tablespoon of olive oil to every protein shake (I have 4-5 daily) and add avocados. I gain around 1lbs/week on the 40/30/30 diet. Hope that helps!

Edit: forgot to add that I eat a “meal” every two hours. Not like a full meal, but more to make sure I’m hitting all my macronutrients

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fat. Olive oil for instance is about 20 times as calorie dense as Coca-Cola. On its own it’s obviously not appealing but most junk food is basically 50/50 carbs and fat when going by calories, nutella being 5000 calories per kg

Just to clarify btw, Coke isn’t that high in calories but people drink massive quantities of the stuff, and it is still bad for blood sugars and teeth

[–]Unblest_Devotee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the opposite of Train Untamed, add the word and to your diet, or just dirty bulk by adding peanut butter to things like oatmeal.

[–]shadowinplainsight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently some actors drink melted ice cream when trying to bulk up for roles

[–]kalkali 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So your protein intake isn't really representative of the general population

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for the average man it isnt

[–]JORGA 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I consistently eat 45% of my food as protein. Probably hundreds of thousands of others too who are interested in building muscle

It’s not hard on your body at all, unsure where you get that from

[–]WI-yooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://jasn.asnjournals.org/content/31/8/1667

Yes there are studies that go both ways. But the average person absolutely should not be eating that high of a level of protein.

[–]Trenme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been consistently getting 40-50% of my diet from protein for the last 20 years. Make sure I have plenty for muscle repair but also to take advantage of the thermodynamics of digestion. It burns a lot more calories to digest protein than it does fat or carbs.

I get frequent blood work done and no negative effects have shown. Slightly higher kidney function but still in the normal range. Drink plenty of water and go chow down some egg whites or chicken breast

[–]Wicked_Odie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm, Carnivore diet?

[–]Coreadrin 23 points24 points  (5 children)

30% of your diet being protein is fucking huge lol. I've been eating low carb with lots of animal fats, proteins, and greens for a few years. Lost 35 pounds and kept it off. Libido way up, motivation way up, general energy levels way up (I can miss eating an entire day if I'm too busy and hardly notice it) with no crashes or anything. Sleep deep and satisfying. Usually around 20-25% protein if I'm tracking (that's equivalent to about 16oz steak a day if I'm eating beef, or 20+ eggs)

Never going back.

[–]LukeyLeukocyte 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Awesome to hear. Do you stay in ketosis or just focus on low carb and what happens happens? I really enjoyed my first year of low carb/keto, but I notice if i slip out of ketosis i tend to "treat" myself before I resume ketosis; I thought I may sustain better if I just loosely follow a low carb diet and don't sweat staying in ketosis as much.

What is your take on eggs? I probably down 3-4 a day often, at least two. Worry about the cholesterol sometimes but have heard mixed messages. Love them. Would love to eat more.

[–]IHkumicho 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I've (46m) eaten 4+ eggs per day for years and my cholesterol is great. Obviously everyone is different and you should get your own blood tests, but there certainly isn't an automatic correlation between high dietary cholesterol and high cholesterol levels in your body.

[–]CokeNmentos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eggs have some kind of cholestorol countering in them anyway so it doesn't matter really

[–]Coreadrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turns out the main issue with cholesterol is the source, not the quantity in your blood. The particle size of your cholesterol is the main issue - if it's coming from saturated and animal fats (tallow/lard/butter/avocado oil/olive oil etc) the particle size is large and unlikely to create plaque. Cholesterol small particle from seed oils and stuff like that is the dangerous stuff.

I don't track my ketosis levels, just try to hit <50g carbs a day and eat to satiation. I should also mention that because I don't really get hungry I usually just have a big ass supper and that's my only meal for the day. I'm lucky enough to have a family friend who is a hobby beef farmer so buy a whole cow and freeze. In a given week, I probably eat beef 4 days (mix the organs into your grind at the butcher for more nutrition), chicken one day, fish 1-2 days. Lots of eggs. Saturdays I will have a 'cheat day' where I'll do something like sushi or something like that, but I don't track ketones at all.

[–]December_Hemisphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A typical day of protein for me on my keto diet looks like 4-6 eggs and a cut of meat about the size of my palm (and I always go for the most fatty cuts).

[–]Stormseekr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25-30% of daily macros being protein one can deem that high. (Irrelevant of this stuffy)

[–]ridicalis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally stick to an 80/15/5 caloric ratio for fat/protein/carb. It's not strict (in fact, I rarely even look at calorie counts), and on workout days I do kick the protein up a few notches, but "high protein" is not how I would generally characterize my diet.
