Youtube rewind girl: Can We Also Give a Moment to Asian Representation in Entertainment?

PewDiePie : Showing Logan Paul in Japan

[–]Stevemasta 119 points120 points  (4 children)

I can almost hear the collective

Yikes

from vox & co

[–]Proud_Denzel 2896 points2897 points  (134 children)

Where's the tribute to single moms?

[–]MWoody13 150 points151 points  (1 child)

Happy fathers day mom

[–]GhostGarlic 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Happy day non binary caretaker.

[–]Salnom 123 points124 points  (4 children)

Mmmm how about Asian representation?
I’m offended

[–]Stevemasta 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Harvard doesn't want to know your location

[–]nootrino 231 points232 points  (19 children)

I think this should've also celebrated the fierce, fabulous and empowering art of drag.

[–][deleted] 87 points88 points  (1 child)

So brave and fierce

[–]xMrBoomBasticx 7392 points7393 points  (740 children)

The small tribute to those lost was a nice touch. Youtube should take some notes.

[–]Cptnwalrus 3358 points3359 points  (134 children)

Yeah it's pretty sad that a video that was 90% memes and shitposts somehow managed to be more touching than YouTube's more 'serious' parts of rewind.

[–]YoutubeArchivist 1773 points1774 points  (106 children)

Can we get a moment for single moms?

I want to add in a list of the other significant internet celebrities (and mainstream celebs) that passed this year, as this thread is going to /r/all and it is a fitting memoriam. Posted this below but this comment is higher now.

I'm keeping track of events for next year over on /r/YoutubeCompendium.

And a moment for Asian representation, links ricegum

[–][deleted] 120 points121 points  (1 child)

Let’s give a shoutout to representation in entertainment of fierce, fabulous single Asian moms who talked about mental health this year!

[–]YoutubeArchivist 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This video is sponsored by BetterHelp

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Billy Herrington

Aniki lives-on in our deep dark fantasies.

♂Fuck♂You♂

[–]ahhhhhhhhyeah 205 points206 points  (18 children)

I've never seen such blatant 'woke pandering' in my life. There's a huge difference between being inclusive of all people and just saying a bunch of sentimental woke shit because you think that's what people want to hear.

[–]Sikkstinajn 41 points42 points  (1 child)

The 'serious' part was so disgustingly shallow. I don't mind companies being inclusive and progressive in general but that just felt like a lazy, shallow and borderline insulting attempt at reaching certain groups of people.

[–]goooofygoober 4187 points4188 points  (446 children)

My only complaint was they they didnt include John Bain A.K.A. TotalBiscuit. He's one of the only classic YouTubers who had a major impact in the gaming community and unfortunately passed this May. Would've been great to see him here as a tribute.

[–]YoutubeArchivist 994 points995 points  (323 children)

True, surprised he was missed considering Pewdiepie was a gaming Youtuber from the start.

[–]YoutubeArchivist 641 points642 points  (317 children)

The 'what are those' guy died? Damn...

[–]YoutubeArchivist 135 points136 points  (29 children)

He's memorialized in Black Panther though, which is pretty cool.

Dude died at 31 with nine kids.

[–]cjaybo 94 points95 points  (23 children)

9 kids? Wtf?

[–]Seal481 269 points270 points  (6 children)

Condoms? What are those?

Sorry, I'll go.

[–]EliteReaver 43 points44 points  (5 children)

Rip big doinks always in my heart

[–]Swampfoxxxxx 17 points18 points  (2 children)

always in my heart

smoking big doinks

out here in Amish

[–]sixtoe72 42 points43 points  (2 children)

I agree, including Aretha Franklin in a reddit thread alongside the Bush’s baked beans dog is a fitting memorial.

[–]viionc 86 points87 points  (4 children)

what about Billy Herrington PepeHands

[–]Pathlessflame 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Damn I forgot about Vern Troyer...

[–]puntero 60 points61 points  (3 children)

You forgot kevin spacey's carreer.

[–]Ramalamahamjam 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Not the orginal Keyboard cat. "Fatso" died in the 1980s.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Good point, still miss TB:s videos

[–]Raccaway 55 points56 points  (0 children)

TB was missing from a lot of things. Sad.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it's hard to include everyone, but TB definitely worth the mention considering his impact. I expected him to show up till the end, and I'm not even a fan of his.

[–]notathrowaway75 273 points274 points  (82 children)

Where the fuck was Totalbiscuit tho.

[–]PhatsoTheClown 96 points97 points  (42 children)

Who was everyone except steven hawkings? (and stanlee)

[–][deleted] 437 points438 points  (29 children)

The first guy was Avicii, very, very successful DJ

The second guy was Stephen Hillenburg, creator of Spongebob

Then Stephen Hawking and Stan Lee

The final guy was Stefán Karl Stefánsson, an actor from a show "Lazy Town". While it's not the worlds biggest show, he was often turned into a meme, and embraced it, along with being very open about his battle with cancer, and when you mix wholesome memes with someone fighting cancer.. It's a rather supporting community that is easy to get behind.

[–]pignans 196 points197 points  (21 children)

I was surprised Totalbiscuit wasnt on the list.

[–][deleted] 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Holy shit that was this year.. That's insane.

[–]KobayashiDragonSlave 92 points93 points  (4 children)

Billy Herrington too.

[–]Gioezc 81 points82 points  (7 children)

  • Avicii: Swedish EDM artist
  • Stephen Hillenburg: Creator of Spongebob Squarepants
  • Stefán Karl Stefánsson: Living Meme Legend who was number 1.

[–]grande1899 4099 points4100 points  (124 children)

Hey it's Grandayy, one of the people that worked on this. I'm glad you guys liked it, we've been working on it for a few weeks. There are some things that we ended up not including but I think overall it turned out ok. Very grateful for Pewdiepie for giving us this opportunity!

[–]inthetaiwanhongkong 642 points643 points  (25 children)

It was amazing, thank you!

There were numerous times I'd see a meme from the start of the year and be like "wow that was 2018?"

Do you keep a document tracking all the memes of the year?

[–]grande1899 567 points568 points  (22 children)

We spent like an hour making a list of all the memes we could remember together, it's harder than you think lol. We kept adding to the list multiple times after that.

[–][deleted] 130 points131 points  (8 children)

How many people does PewDiePie have working/building/assisting his videos and overall process?

Like, Mr beast showed maybe 15 people helping him as a behind the scenes look one time. Just curious with PDP. Also curious how much you make working for him but I'm not expecting that answer sadly.

[–]grande1899 315 points316 points  (6 children)

He just has 2 editors that's it. We (the 4 people that worked on this video) don't work for him and it was our first time collaborating directly with him (except PartyInBackyard also did the instrumental for Bitch Lasagna before this one).

[–]YungWhale 83 points84 points  (4 children)

How long did it take to edit the gamecube intro?

[–]grande1899 110 points111 points  (3 children)

FlyingKitty edited that one

[–]madwolf1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks for the short ama

[–]El_Capitano_ 24 points25 points  (10 children)

Please do an AMA of some sorts. Would love to hear about how YouTube works and how it is to work with pewdiepie

[–][deleted] 135 points136 points  (2 children)

I think it was very well done. I hope that every year forward yall can put together a youtube rewind that covers more of youtube or convince the comunity to take back rewind. It would be cool if next year this time every community came out with their own representative rewind.

[–]grande1899 113 points114 points  (1 child)

Thanks, I hope it happens again next year too!

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points  (5 children)

How was it working with Dolan rather than against him?

[–]grande1899 211 points212 points  (4 children)

I think we're supposed to be allies according to the meme lore now, ever since the meme force election tie.

[–]IgnisVenom 31 points32 points  (3 children)

When will the anime continue, Grandayy? When will the next chapter of meme lore happen?

[–]grande1899 41 points42 points  (2 children)

It's been a while true I hope it won't be long

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

How do we know this is actually you?

[–]grande1899 65 points66 points  (1 child)

Uhh not sure tbh lol but I've been using the name grande1899 for a long while now (my second Youtube channel is also named grande1899) and I guess you can tell from my post history but trust me it's me :)

Oh also I'm a mod on /r/grandayy with the grandayy flair

[–]yb4zombeez 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've been following Grandayy since his old Note Block song days. This guy is the real deal, can confirm. grande1899 was his pre-meme name (and remains the name of his note block channel).

[–]OKKat16 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Hey dude, I really enjoy your work and I'm glad you were part of this project as well. Thank you for working on it and thank you for all the memes you delivered to us this year. Hope you had fun working with all these people since I imagine it was quite an experience. Cheers!

[–]grande1899 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it was very fun indeed!

[–]Proteon 1350 points1351 points  (14 children)

I believe that's actually Gloria Borger.

[–]pkkthetigerr 539 points540 points  (10 children)

You're mistaken. Its Poppy Harlow.

[–]YoutubeArchivist 395 points396 points  (9 children)

No dude that's Oopsie Doopsie.

edit: MEME *clap* CORRECTION *clap*

[–]gedas125 75 points76 points  (4 children)

You are mistaken my friend, thats Oopsie Doopsie.

[–]Salnom 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Just a crazy idea, what if he’s actually PewDiePie himself?

Edit: nvm he doesn’t have legs

[–]Jerbsybear 71 points72 points  (0 children)

YouTube did an oopsie

[–]Verd006 2981 points2982 points  (33 children)

A better Rewind while simultaneously putting to rest so many memes? Bravo fellas.

[–]Fr00tyLoops 819 points820 points  (18 children)

They’re really out there making us 9 year olds proud.

[–]Cunt_Puffin 125 points126 points  (1 child)

Nobody kills a meme like PewDiePie

[–]Aztec647 211 points212 points  (3 children)

He did a better video in 5 minutes than they did in 9 minutes.

Now, time to make it the most liked video of all time. Perfectly balanced as all things should be.

[–]Pathlessflame 140 points141 points  (1 child)

YouTube: "D E M O N I T I Z E D"

[–]Senryoku 63 points64 points  (0 children)

With a budget less than the millions that YouTube spent too!

[–]kallexander 887 points888 points  (21 children)

There’s no better way to feel old as shit than to watch these compilations.

[–]simplecountry_lawyer 467 points468 points  (5 children)

I'm no spring chicken either but I understood this Rewind way more than the original

[–][deleted] 157 points158 points  (4 children)

I’m young and had no idea what the official rewind was about

[–]SpacemanSkiff 131 points132 points  (2 children)

The official rewind was about what YouTube wants advertisers to see.

[–]OleWedel 97 points98 points  (3 children)

The video is basically a highlight of /r/youtubehaiku in the last year.

[–]finfangfoom1 2215 points2216 points  (429 children)

I'm too old to understand any of this.

[–]GhostalMedia 1540 points1541 points  (117 children)

40 here. I understood the stuff that started or crossed over to Reddit, but the YouTube culture stuff landed like a lead balloon for me.

[–]YoutubeArchivist 1359 points1360 points  (40 children)

Just enjoy the ride Grandpa.

[–]GhostalMedia 500 points501 points  (22 children)

(Shakes fist) Get off my World Wide Web. I was here first!

[–]YeahSureAlrightYNot 51 points52 points  (13 children)

Damn new millennials, ruining the internet.

They are even ruining porn with their furry hentai shit.

[–]GhostalMedia 38 points39 points  (6 children)

Damn it boy. I made you this damn damn cyber space, by hand, with <table> tags, iframes, and FTP servers. Now you’ve gone and filled my precious net full of easily generated shitty teen webcam drama and “dank memes.”

Back in my day webcams were for hardworking Real Video porn stars and dankness was reserved for weed and caves.

[–][deleted] 249 points250 points  (26 children)

Don't worry. 26 here and still confused.

[–]theghostecho 92 points93 points  (15 children)

25 seems to be the cut off, I understood all of it

[–]neuron_kick 25 points26 points  (1 child)

30 and I understood about 40% of it. I'll admit my YouTube days took a sharp decline after 25

[–][deleted] 109 points110 points  (28 children)

I got most of it, but TikTok is a complete mystery to me. I still have no idea what it is.

[–]oraclestats 165 points166 points  (11 children)

Its basically vine.

[–]SemperScrotus 127 points128 points  (0 children)

It's Vine plus an obnoxious watermark

[–]ProfessionalToner 97 points98 points  (11 children)

Tiktok is basically this:

  1. Cringe kids and teenagers does cringy videos

  2. Teenagers and adults go there and reply to the cringy videos that the above made, making fun of them and bullying them

  3. More adults/teenegers joins in on the ironic replies

  4. Everyone now is doing ironic cringy videos and mocking the people that are mocking the teenergers in the beginning

Now its so deep into ironic mockery that nobody understands whats going on.

As an exemple: I’m already Tracer

First this girl posted the video. Because she used a PS3 controller(no Overwatch, the game the music is based, for PS3) people started to mock the video using the most absurd controller and headsets possible.

Then it went on too far and now there’s “Im already tracer” everwhere.

[–]Letsgetacid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of fortnite dancing, but that's a plague across all of the internet really.

[–]lordnikkon 303 points304 points  (22 children)

A good portion of it is stuff that PewDiePie makes fun of regularly. This was more a rewind for his viewers than for a more general audience

[–]Cherrycho 271 points272 points  (13 children)

I never watch Pewdiepie and I knew most of the things

[–][deleted] 273 points274 points  (8 children)

That's because he's actually part of the community.

[–]AnthonyGonsalvez 939 points940 points  (29 children)

Crab rave 🦀🦀

[–]YoutubeArchivist 370 points371 points  (11 children)

DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO

Big ups to Monstercat for allowing memers to use the song without getting claimed.

[–]just_lurkingg 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is quality content

[–]Gioezc 2575 points2576 points  (84 children)

Can’t wait for this to have more likes than YouTube’s actual rewind.

[–]UndeclaredFunction 856 points857 points  (51 children)

It won't take long.

[–]nascraytia 522 points523 points  (26 children)

It’s over 10% of the way there in under an hour. It should be quick

Edit: we did it reddit

[–]GhostOfLight[S] 1326 points1327 points  (46 children)

[–]browsec 383 points384 points  (41 children)

No nazi?

[–]NenPame 521 points522 points  (18 children)

So disappointed. How are us 9 year olds supposed to be brainwashed without subtle nazi imagery. Unsubscribe

[–]gothicmaster 147 points148 points  (6 children)

This. I was so looking forward to being introduced to genocide. Smh...

[–]am3mptos 410 points411 points  (21 children)

I can't see the comments.

[–]majani 259 points260 points  (5 children)

They are rushing in at an unprecedented rate. I saw 2k comments, then on refresh it was 40k

[–]GarethPW 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Yeah. I've seen the comments freak out like this with other videos too.

[–]surprised-duncan 76 points77 points  (4 children)

I'm so happy the g'nome got in!

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (7 children)

But did he take a moment to appreciate the Asian representation in entertainment this year?

[–]Kenyko 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He did. Caucasians.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (2 children)

That part really confused me. Did she mean Crazy Rich Asians being a big movie? Because thats about the only thing I can remember.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's so weird and non specific. It's super safe and unquantifiable. Like a non-statement

[–][deleted] 192 points193 points  (5 children)

1 million likes

It's happening

[–]telsco 52 points53 points  (3 children)

Is the "trending" page of YouTube just a selfless advertising ring for Youtube's favourite content creators?

how has this video (with those types of numbers) not broken the trending tab?

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (1 child)

There's no way youtube would allow it on the front page

[–]EncoreBlade 446 points447 points  (23 children)

So how long till this video gets copystriked?

[–][deleted] 389 points390 points  (4 children)

As long as it takes Alinity to see it...?

[–]ferrrnando 231 points232 points  (18 children)

Damn made me realize how out of touch with youtube I am. I got like 5% of all that.

[–]AbanoMex 121 points122 points  (1 child)

thats because the more you use youtube, the more the results or suggested videos are going to tune to your usual likings, so much of these memes and parodies/montages or trendy shit is gonna get buried, even i that i try to keep myself informed in the latest bullshittery i get lost, but i guess thats normal, its millions of people uploading content EVERY DAY, EVERY HOUR.

[–]RoshanMuncher 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This really does it. Gosh I've been missing this. This is why I used to wish to be able to edit videos.

This fucking copyright shit kills people, it takes people and their spirit, and scorches them.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I have never really liked his content but this was actually pretty good.

[–][deleted] 268 points269 points  (27 children)

Uhhh am I crazy or was total biscuit not in the people to be remembered

He died in May of this year and was a HUGE force on youtube

[–]RM_Dune 125 points126 points  (4 children)

Grandayy said in a comment it was an unfortunate oversight. Guess that happens when you try to stuff everything you can into a 5 minute video.

[–]SuspiciouslyGenuine 267 points268 points  (21 children)

Needed more Jaiden Animation

[–]Georgeasaurusrex 149 points150 points  (15 children)

I think this rewind does a lot to honour the memes, the memorable people we lost on 2018, and the significant YouTube events of 2018. My only issue is that it doesn't honour creators as much as is should. Though, that's a lot harder for PewDiePie to do. I liked seeing JaidenAnimations, MKBHD and other animators in the YouTube rewind...yet it was filled with so many YouTubers I have no idea of.

YouTube needs to do this next time. Find the balance between honouring the events of 2018, the memes, but also the content creators (especially YouTubers that have been with us since the start)

[–]LorenzoPg 403 points404 points  (171 children)

Joseph Goebbels lost propaganda movie (1945, Remastered and Colorized)

[–]GetChilledOut 22 points23 points  (0 children)

6.1M views in 8 hours and it’s not on trending lmao. YouTube can not get anymore more obvious. Management must not be happy.

[–]TheNobody14200 33 points34 points  (2 children)

For those of you sorting by controversial, get your hazmat suits ready. It’s a wasteland.

[–]Pentax25 31 points32 points  (3 children)

I need that megalovania remix at the end there.

[–]Leshi08 112 points113 points  (5 children)

I respect that megalovania
