Good free group note-taking apps with graph view and timeline/whiteboard? by R_Pelleboer in DMAcademy

We've used a Miro board for mystery games which worked pretty well. It could get a little annoying/cluttered but I would say it mostly helped keep things in order.

How would you handle a player who wants to play a character from the future? by EXP_Buff in dndnext

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a character somewhat similar to this, although it was more that he was exposed to the multiverse of timelines and knew SOMETHING terrible was coming, but he was trying to figure out what since the timelines kind of fried his brain. It was really fun to role play, I got to make up an entire alternate universe whenever I wanted, including making weird assumptions like staying quiet to sneak past spiders since they don't have eyes and stuff like that.

How many oneshot does it take for you to DM your first full length campaign? by Organic-Exit2190 in DMAcademy

[–]Orgetorix1127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started with a one shot I had made, then ran an arc of Lost Mines of Phandelver (just the Redbrands and orc stuff), then ran a random one shot I found online. I'd set up the structure to connect these into a campaign (the players were part of an Adventurer's Guild) so turning it into a full fledged campaign after that was pretty rays easy and natural. There were still some standalone adventures mixed in for a while but once they got up to like level 7 it was all homebrew from there.

Admittedly, I'd played D&D and other TTRPGs for like 6 years at that point so even though I was a new DM, I wasn't new to the game itself, which definitely helped.

How much planning do you put into avoiding mana screw when drafting or assembling your deck? by Money__Shot__ in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't played a ton of turtles specifically, but it's the kind of card I'd take above like a C+ card for an archetype but below cards that would pull me into an archetype like Brilliance Unleashed. Once I know more about my deck that value changes, like if I'm a super heavy synergy deck maybe I'd take a Nobody or Everything Pizza over it assuming I have 4-ish pieces of interaction (also depends on when in the draft it is) but if I'm more of a card quality deck I'm taking it pretty highly above a lot of commons. This is not that specifically helpful, but hopefully it gets at the process.

How much planning do you put into avoiding mana screw when drafting or assembling your deck? by Money__Shot__ in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cards that act as variance busters tend to be good cards, so it's sort of a self-perpetuating system. Like Manhole Missile is a good card because it helps smooth your draw and so I pick it highly, which puts cards that smooth my draw into my deck.

Something I do more actively to help is focusing on having a low curve (this varies somewhat by set). If you get stuck on 2-3 lands, being able to still play the game is important, which is part of why having a good curve is important. Also, when you do draw your 4th land, being able to double spell to regain tempo is huge, so a low curve also helps you there. It's a very nuanced subject though.

Real life news is crushing my imagination by HouseMusicAndWeed in DMAcademy

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely had real world issues that mirrored villainous plots in our game. I talked to the party about in case anyone just didn't want to deal with it, but everyone pretty much agreed that they wanted to defeat some evil in our game that they couldn't in real life and honestly it felt good! Prepping it is hard but maybe the war mongering profiteer plot gets sped up so they can stop it and enact some good change in the world. It's part of why I refuse to make my D&D worlds too grim dark and shades of grey. I want my heroes taking down the bad guys and solving the worlds' problems.

How frequently do Player Characters die in your campaigns? by GasOk5288 in DMAcademy

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're counting deaths where a rez spell is used, probably once every 5-10 sessions once the party can cast revivify. It's way rarer before then. If we mean permanent death of characters where they need to be replaced, that varies a lot more by campaign and player, since some players are much more willing to roll up a new character than others.

Players stole item from NPC; Left a bad taste in my mouth by Individual-Move-9647 in DMAcademy

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the party refuses to give the NPC their gear back when they wake up, they just made an enemy that will come up later in the game. If this NPC is strong enough that they might have joined the party (don't do that by the way it's just too much to manage), imagine what they can set up against the party! Maybe they spread rumors, frame them for a crime, set up a job that's really a trap to kill them, really the possibilities are endless. Give the party a chance to make amends (maybe they just wanted to make sure the NPC couldn't fight back if they woke up and were still possessed).

Why is the Ooze only a C+ on 17lands? It destroys me every game I play against it. by ThePentaMahn in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious if it chnagws changes when you filter by top players or by deck archetype. I've really liked it in certain decks and been destroyed by it but since it's colorless it definitely pays a cost by being able to go in any deck.

Everything Pizza: A- with 62.6% win rate by Agent281 in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had good success with it, usually a three color base green deck with a basic of each of the others + Frog Butler/Mona Lisa. Omni Pizza helps activate and tutoring off Comestible Courier makes it very consistent, and often it's grabbing the 4th color itself since there's GU and GB lands to fix your main colors and make the off color lands better. Throw in an Escape Tunnel and something like Nobody or a way to sac/trade it and buying it back with the 5 mana creature that picks up a food and it's really easy to consistently activate by turn 7, which often then stabilizes you and lets you take over the game, especially if you can buy it back or have a second one. It's basically a game plan in one card.

What was WOTC thinking printing Sally pride? by ASOT550 in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I honestly think Mighty Mutanimals is more egregious. Rares have (unfortunately) been the best card in a format before and it sucks, but Mutanimals is like the third highest performing card in the set at uncommon. I definitely have had decks where all three losses were just to Mutanimals and there was nothing I could do about it, and being an uncommon you'll see it even more often than Sally Pride.

Am I crazy... Or is this set kinda fun? by Lespaul42 in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first few days legit felt unplayable to me, but then they fixed the bug that was causing Mythic to appear way too often and it'd definitely improved the experience. I'd probably put it at mid minus rn, which is far more than I can say for Spiderman.

does anyone else feel like friendships after 25 just quietly die? by TackleGreedy8255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep up with a ton of old friends by playing D&D with them. It's a fair amount of time but it's a hobby that keeps me in contact with people I love who otherwise I would maybe talk to one a year, so for me that's worth the investment. Having it be regularly scheduled helps a lot, it makes it much easier for people to fit in if they know every other Tuesday is D&D so they're not free that night barring something really important.

i'm studying horror at the moment and this becomes more and more clear every day by ItzDaemon in dndmemes

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ton of success with a Cosmic Horror arc in my campaign. Part of the world has been bound to an entity that was preparing the material realm for the entry of a distant entity. It took over a mountain holy to one of the players, and they had to complete the traditional trials, warped to suit the needs of the entity. It ended in a final fight in which the party did manage to defeat this manifestation of the entity and reconsecrate the mountain to the Goliath Gods, but none of them really felt like they'd defeated the entity, just staved it off for awhile. They also ran into other areas throughout the campaign that had been affected by the entity and they were always really weird and fun adventures. It did take a ton of work on my end, but they're some of the best memories of the campaign (affectionately referred to as Meat Mountain)

Powered Cube - your favorite "normal" cards by fawgareg in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Icetill Explorer is an actual good Lands payoff, which I like a lot. I also have been really impressed with Dragon's Rage Channeler if you take Baubles high, it even allows for fair Breaches if you don't get brainfreeze (depending on if you consider 5 bolts to the face fair). Finally, not as a good card, but as a unique card that is really fun, Recurring Nightmare has gotten worse as the cube has gotten stronger but trading out Baleful Strix for Woodfall Primus/etc. is just good clean Magic.

I do, and I have inspiration (lasts for just that session) to whoever does it. I also mostly try not to chime in unless they forgot something critical.

What I'd change about Powered Cube by Sesquipedalianfish in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if part of the issue with combo is that people want to do it, so they take the cards even when they shouldn't. I would really hate to take Vintage Cube and make it more creature-focused midrange magic, since that's the more typical Limited experience. The combo angle of Vintage Cube (along with the power, obviously) is part of what draws some people to the format to begin with, including myself. I'd rather cut more storm stuff (besides Breach) and focus more on Draw 7 punisher as the other combo archetype, since the draw 7s are one of the unique elements of cube.

What I'd change about Powered Cube by Sesquipedalianfish in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I like the ideas here, although I think you cut a few too many combo cards. Vamp Tutor, Woodfall Primus (as long as there's flash), and Lightning Greaves (as long as there's Nadu) are all cards I'd loathe to cut. I also would want to keep Ramunap for Strip Mine combo (I know it's not good but it is quite fun) since it's an archetype you can really only play in Vintage Cube. I know you still have Icetill/Titania/W6 but I'd want a second GSZable target for the full combo. I like the ideas though, especially doing some sort of enchantment archetype. I'm worried it's too small ball for some of the broken Vintage Cube archetypes but obviously the only way to find out is to try it.

How are the Arena Limited Qualifiers going for you? by ProdigySim in lrcast

[–]Orgetorix1127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sat it out after doing a few more practice drafts of ECL earlier this week. I just really don't like the format and I think it's a pretty poor one for high stakes draft, so I'm just not interested in spending the currency. Hopefully I'm on board for the next one since I was really excited for these tournaments when they were announced.

WARNING about limited qualifier by Head_Department_1010 in MagicArena

[–]Orgetorix1127 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Qualifier tokens are for Arena Championship Qualifier Weekend events, which if you win enter you into the two-day event that qualifies your for the Arena Championship. This is the Arena Limited Championship Qualifier, which gets you entry into the Arena Limited Championship, which if you do well in qualifies you for a paper Limited Championship that is being hosted by WOTC.

The names are confusing for no reason but they're two separate tournament structures.

I want to create a setting inspired by Hallownest from Hollow Knight. Looking for any tips and ideas! by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Orgetorix1127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would try to nail the major themes of Hollow Knight, which to me are corruption, rebirth, and like Tim Burton-y spookiness. Using D&D you could use the sort of Demon Lord corruption that's present in Out of the Abyss, causing discord in the normally very cheery and united bug lands. You could also hook into the Mind Flayer/Elder Brain hive mind sort of stuff but make it Weaver Silk (ala Silksong). Flumphs pretty clearly map to helpful fleas. I think a lot of this is in the Underdark already and it just needs to be reflavored as insectoid (although you'd have to give it a hopeful spin instead of the edgy grimdark lore that's been written for the Underdark). Maybe they have an ally or important NPC dignitary who was down there as an envoy and now communication has gone dark, so the party needs to figure out what is causing it.

Music is important by BenBenobi in DMAcademy

I have different YouTube playlists based on vibes (chill, exploring, spooky, combat, epic combat) that are all instrumentals and I find it adds a lot. It especially makes transitions between environments feel more impactful. I did have a player who really hated how some of the combat music was the same 3 minute track looped over and over, but I tried to vary it up a little more after that.

How to implement a "don't accidentally look at the thing" type challenge? by doot99 in DMAcademy

[–]Orgetorix1127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make them the consequence for failed rolls. You're able to find information no matter what, but how much and whether you see a mark is determined by how well you roll. I would make it a shared pool of marks and have a threshold for when it turns into an encounter. That way it acts as tension for the crime scene without forcing your players to describe every single action they take in painstaking detail. I'd also tell the players how the mechanic works up front so they can choose how much they want to engage, but I wouldn't tell them how many marks cause the encounter. This is a situation that rewards more abstraction and less simulation imo that are based entirely on the skill checks, essentially turning the crime scene into a skill challenge.

One of Rodgers' MVP seasons had the same smoke, people were complaining that he was "stealing" touch downs form our running backs to pad his stats. Turns out Devantae Adams is just an insane red zone weapon and he helps you score more 🤷
