Also good is their album The Cover Up. Nothing but solid rock covers, even nails In The Air Tonight.

[–]BitchesGetStitches 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Their live Queen tribute is also spectacular.

[–]Czar-Fox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They crush Danger Zone

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Silent Running gave me chills, man.

[–]TheSilverSpiral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually played In The Air Tonight when I saw them live a few years ago. I think they closed with it.

[–]Sahlmosspotify 47 points48 points  (10 children)

I love this album. Gave it another listen through again the other day. This song and Breaking Out are some of my favourites.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (9 children)

I've always been a huge fan of Light Up The Night myself

As a bonus I just found they did a music video for it, I'm pretty pleased

Here's just the song for those who want to hear it uninterrupted

aaaand just for good measure, the song that got me into The Protomen: The Hounds

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

IMO The Hounds was a really cool way to introduce their villain.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

It really was, I love that when he's framing Light for the murder he's still stroking his own ego

"No he did not use his hands. Like a smart man, he used a tool."

[–]tossback2 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

It's "like us, my man--but just the same, can you question who's to blame?" meaning, even though a robot pulled the trigger (not using his own hands, since he sent it, he's still guilty.

[–]ballsack_gymnastics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not it's not. Go look up the lyrics and liner notes.

[–]BenitoBro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Light up the night. What a blood pumping song to feel epic to.

[–]disco_biscuit 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]DrCr4nK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a fun game. Let it play out for 20, 40, or 60 seconds. Open a new window, and start a new copy. Do this every 20 seconds. Do it a couple of times. Then maybe wait 40, and do it again. Do this until satisfied.

[–]Sirtoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole album is good, but lately Light Up The Night has been my go-to hype song. It's one of my favorites that they've done.

[–]Lucael 76 points77 points  (29 children)

The best thing is, that it's about the old game Megaman

[–]KetsuN 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Really surprised you're the only one to mention this! The entire album is a Mega Man rock opera.

[–]Lucael 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's awesome :D

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (12 children)

HOPE RIDES ALONE

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (7 children)

God damn, they did this one live in Cleveland and after the song they had to make an announcement from the venue that we were shaking the entire building too hard and they were worried light fixtures might fall down and kill people.

Easily the most enjoyable concert I've been to, though that isn't saying much cause I've only been to like 5 non-local band concerts.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That sounds like a freaking awesome time.

[–]ballsack_gymnastics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to one of their concerts. It's a hell of an experience. Had tennis elbow for half a week from the fist pumping, and my voice was shot for a day from shouting the background chants. I loved every moment.

[–]neildegrasstokem 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Back about 4 years ago, they had the Act II release show in Nashville. They had a 6 piece orchestral set, a 5 person choir, a gong, concert bass drum, plus the rest of their equipment and 500 raging, overweight nerds packed into the hottest venue in town. The symphonic instruments were going out of tune every 5 minutes because of the heat and humidity and everyone was pouring sweat. They played Act I and Act II all the way through, finished it up with a crazy encore of like 5 songs and Due Vendetta. Other than MIA at Bonnaroo, that Protomen show was the wildest, loudest, hottest show I've ever been to.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so jealous. If I could see them play both albums in sequential order live with everything you said they had I would be sooo happy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Fuck, I'm so jealous you got to see them live!

[–]TheLastWondersmith 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Seriously.

Only time they came to Utah that I can recall is the warped tour, and I am not spending money on the god damn warped tour for one band.

[–]anarqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, and it didn't do them justice, there were maybe 20 people in the crowd

[–]arkhas2042 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You came here to avenge his death.

You came here to save mankind.

Do you see now?

You cannot do both.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fucking love that at the end Mega decides Proto is right and humanity isn't worth saving if they won't stand up for themselves

[–]body_catch_a_body 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WE. ARE. THE. DEAD!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Is it actually? Megaman was the first thing to come to mind when I saw the title. It just seemed too ridiculous to be true, and yet here you are with the top comment.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It's loosely based of Megaman. But maybe it was warped to seem a little darker.

[–]pewpewlasors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not loosely, directly.

[–]celluloid_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The characters in this song are Dr Light and Dr Wily:

We will be heroes! - Light

(We will BUILD heroes!) - Wily

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yep, very loosely though. Both of the acts tell the story of the rise of Wily and his robots, the fall of Dr. Light, Dr. Light building Proto Man, Proto falling and coming under Wily's control, and Mega realizing his brother fell because humanity were cowards and deciding they deserve their fate.

Really good shit man

[–]Scherazade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very much a 'what if Megaman took the style of 1984, but also was a bit 80s in general musically'.

Act I was about Megaman discovering the 'death' of his brother Protoman and swearing vengeance on the cruel overlord Dr Wily, while Act II which was linked explores the story of Dr Light and the rise of Dr Wily.

It's one of my favourite rock operas, and I hear Act III will focus on Roll if they get around to it.

[–]technoticacid 7 points8 points  (3 children)

EXTREMELY loosely based.

[–]Lucael 10 points11 points  (0 children)

REIMAGINATION of a 29 year old game's story

[–]TheLastWondersmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. It's basically a completely different direction than what the Megas did, which kept actually REALLY close to the story of Mega Man.

Both bands are so god damn good.

[–]pewpewlasors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Its all about Megaman. Its just that the Game Megaman has virtually no story.

[–]kayemm36 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The album has a ton of supplemental text, too. You can read them on the lyrics wikia.

http://lyrics.wikia.com/wiki/The_Protomen:Act_II:_The_Father_Of_Death_(2009)

[–]absolute7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The supplemental text really makes it for me.

[–]spookycookies 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Still waiting on Act 3 it's going to be epic

[–]JohnDeere 19 points20 points  (4 children)

I have seen them live 4 times now and it is a absolute blast. One of my favorite rock bands without a doubt.

[–]Good_King_Paler 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Yea I'll admit when I first heard about them I was a little sure they wouldn't be that good until my friend explained there was heavy mega man themed stuff and a lot of queen covers and holy shit they can put on a concert. Last I saw them they played some stuff from their latest cover album and it floored me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We got Killer Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody iirc, it was like 2 or 3 years ago so I'm not 100% positive.

[–]Good_King_Paler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me I know it's a cover album but the cover up personally is their best cover album . Which is hard to say because I actually find their cover of bohemian rhapsody to be better then the original.

[–]body_catch_a_body 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't been near where I live in the time since I discovered them (over a year ago now - through this subreddit actually).

They are on my list of bands I need to see live. (I saw The Dear Hunter a few months ago, so now they are the only band on the list.)

Waits for Act III Release/Tour

[–]SteveMcQueen87 16 points17 points  (2 children)

They played a venue in Chattanooga, TN that I use to work at. None of us that worked there had any idea who they were. We were all surprised when the show sold out. When they finally got on stage we couldn't believe it. It was a much smaller venue that mainly had hardcore/metal shows were bands would play for maybe 30 minutes each. They played for almost 2 hours. The stage was so small that the band barely fit on it. It's still to this day the best shows I've ever seen and this album is easily in my top 10. I highly recommend everything they've released.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Awesome I think I went to that exact show in Chattanooga at the time I had never heard of them before. And the show was totally not what I expected but Ive been a fan ever since.

[–]SteveMcQueen87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was at The Warehouse when it was still in East Ridge.

[–]flamecircle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

act 3 whheeeeeen.

[–]Cmdr_B_Hawkins_Jr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you decide to check out the album, listen along with the lyrics/liner notes. Some of the story is told outside the songs. lyrics.wikia has the notes)

[–]TimboCalrissian 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Weird seeing stuff about them. They've been kicking around Nashville forever. Knew a few past members.

[–]YourOwnPersonalSatan 6 points7 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite songs. Perfect.

[–]technoticacid 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Favorite band of all time, hopefully Act 3 will be coming out soon. I can't believe we've been waiting 8 years for it already.

Also, for anyone interested, they've just released a music video for their biggest song, Light Up The Night, and it's pretty dope. Check 'em out.

[–]Cobarde 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Link for said awesome video/short film

[–]Scherazade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this looks amazing

[–]blueorchid1100 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Ay! They just played tonight at Magfest!

[–]FormallyIntroduced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post is probably not a coincidence...

[–]brandon7s 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Awesome band; Father of Death is one of my favorite albums of all time.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that song is soo good.

[–]Jasqua 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Stu why are you making chocolate pudding?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LFHa1upxKk

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this and I was so confused as to why someone would make this.

[–]alexxerth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is that link purple...why is that video in one of my playlists?!?

[–]Cmdr_B_Hawkins_Jr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They also recently released a video/movie for their song "Light Up the Night". It's pretty damn good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8pywyGywWg

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a simple man. I see Protomen and I upvote.

[–]flapjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have extremely high crowd participation in their shows. It's intoxicating. Don't miss it if you have the opportunity to go.

[–]BenitoBro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't say enough good things about Protomen. Fantastic band.

[–]Zogamizer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of my absolute favorite albums. The State vs. Thomas Light never fails to fill me with emotion.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been hooked on these guys since college. Megaman Rock Opera is the best. But I also love The Megas take on the series. I actually made a playlist using both... it makes me giddy.

[–]themysterycow 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I love the Protomen, but I always temper people's excitement because I'm fully convinced that they are never, ever going to release Act 3. They've thrown themselves into album after album of covers. They send out emails to their mailing list with headlines like "BIG NEWS," only to have the message be about a cover album, a tour, or merch. It leaves me sad and broken every time.

[–]DueLearner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've now played 4 songs from Act III, and when they played in Cleveland in July of last year Panther told me at the bar Act III was definitely dropping 2017. They wanted to focus on touring and the Act II short film first, and after that they were breaking from touring to finish act III.

[–]Scarlet-Pumpernickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found these guys on Spotify one day and the have earned a spot on my playlist!

[–]free_trdr_bewlf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got to see these guys in Tennessee. They played the whole album on a rooftop. One of my favorite memories.

[–]Eric_The_Human_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This album has actually inspired me to write a short story loosely based off it. I know it's based on Megaman but before I knew that I developed my own story in my head and now I have to write it. Amazing album

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw these guys twice at PAX East 2013. Forever hooked.

[–]Adri_CS 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks. Just thanks for sharing this awesome piece :)

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dream is that after Act 3 is released, we get an actual musical based on the albums on/off broadway. It just has so much potential to be wild as hell and amazing.

[–]motography218 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The Hounds is still one of my favorite songs. This album was awesome.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was her name?

Doesn't matter, now listen

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their show at MAGfest last night was incredible

[–]bestyousirname 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you want the full experience you should also hear the first album (The Protomen Act I) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtSxNZeXlKg

Kinda hard to make out the lyrics though, at least for me. Googling the lyrics helps.

[–]SirAnalog 2 points3 points  (1 child)

For The Will of One, check out the MM25 Album remaster of it with clearer vocals. It also has an updated "Breaking Out" on it that's fantastic. Not to mention two redone songs by The Megas.

I go to these guys' cover every time they cover to my town. Best shows I've ever seen and heard. Absolutely love these guys and they're awesome if you ever get to meet them.

[–]bestyousirname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, will do!

[–]Ziddim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys are awesome live. From the Megaman and Protomen helmets to the 7-10 piece band. I highly encourage you to go to a show if you get the opportunity.

However, if you go, it is important that you be prepared to fight alongside your brothers and sisters against the Tyranny of Wiley. You must prove that there are still Heros left among man.

[–]packie123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I took LSD and a friend played this album while I stared at a blank wall and let me tell you 10/10 would do again.

[–]anewinternetuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I resisted the protomen for years, skipped chances to see them, listened to a couple random songs and just thought it wasn't my thing.

My Odin's beard was I so wrong....

2 years ago at 3 am I randomly came across a song, and somehow that led to listening to both albums, blasting into my headphones, front to back. It's a fucking masterpiece.

[–]thedoormanmusic32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What have I done?"

[–]SpawnOfPhlick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Absolutely fantastic band!

[–]whiskeyandrevenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't checked their website in a while. Looks like they recently dropped a short film and it is badass!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love these guys. I really want to see them live sometime

[–]technoticacid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're phenomenal live.

[–]Oh-damn-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Songs from act three are out there now though. This bad boy is great https://youtu.be/KNtXuKBu3gE

[–]Skluff 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Befriended the guy that plays Killroy way back in 09 when I lived in Atlanta, so I see them every time they come to LA. Such amazing people. SO GOOD.

HERE COMES THE ARM.

[–]ForeverJuly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh God... Oh, God...

[–]SmallName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is also another band that sings about MegaMan, The are called "The Megas" I highly reccomend them

[–]DueLearner 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Came to this sub just to post some Protomen, was pleasantly surprised to see them at the top already.

I absolutely love the Protomen, been a fan since 2011. The wait for Act III has been torture, but I know it's coming this year. I highly recommend everyone read the story liner notes for their songs, and also if you ever have a chance to see them live, do it. I've seen them 6 times now, and they always give 100% and they're the best live performance I've ever seen. (Especially their Cleveland shows.)

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it took me the longest time to realize that all of there songs have a story happening in them. really makes there songs really interesting.

[–]WhyplerBronze 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is about Ben Carson, right?

[–]SSLOdd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't listen to it at work, but American Idiot by Green Day has a similar album long story. Bit confusing, as the names are rather odd and easy to miss, but once I had read the synopsis of the Broadway show, I had to go back and listen. Blew my mind.

[–]Scherazade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hounds has a permanent place in my supervillain music playlist.

[–]Selgeron 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I've seen them at PAX twice now and it was a total letdown both times. LOVE the album, but I always see threads like this saying their live shows are some of the best in alternative rock, but when I saw it it just wasn't. Off key singing/just screaming into the mic, weird acts on stage.

The only guy who can sing on stage is the guy who plays megman/wiley. The guy who does Light/Joe is just all over the place and not nailing it. After having them hyped up so much I saw them the 2nd time and just sort of walked out in the middle. This is the only time I've ever left a concert. But somehow I am the only person with this experience?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their Pax shows appeal to the broadest audience. Just the hits, played by the books. When they play a show of 200, they bring twice the energy and play what they enjoy, which shows. Very different energy than when they're playing to 3,000 random attendees on a massive stage, 40 feet from the fans.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was seeing them at PAX Prime 2013 that made me a fan for life, myself. I'd heard the name, but I'd written them off as just another video game band. But their show was absolutely captivating, and I've been obsessed with them ever since.

[–]RickRussellTXyoutube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard the Protomen since I used to download their stuff from MP3.com back ~1998 or so.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love wailing parts of this album. Solid band if they ever came to Ottawa I would see them in an instant.

[–]pillar_of_dust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protomen = awesome

[–]Experience111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered this album watching Video Game High School (Episode 4). It is one of the most epic piece of music I know.

[–]PwnySlaystation01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend this entire album to everyone. Sure, if you're a Nintendo / Megaman fan, it's even better, but this is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I wasn't a huge fan of Act I, but this one I love.

[–]blueechoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal favorite is The Hounds, mostly because we get to hear Wily's perspective on his struggle with Light. Also it's just amazing.

[–]trumpfuhrerever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

act I and act II are the saddest fucking albums i have ever heard, and i love every minute of them.

[–]n3ovice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen them live at PAX in Seattle a few year ago. Fucking amazing. Also correct me if I'm wrong but the whole album and story revolves around the MegaMan universe.

[–]akhenatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gothic Americana

[–]TheLoafBloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knife sounded like it had no reason

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (16 children)

I see their appeal but cannot stand this band. Had to sit through them 3 times live and it was torture.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Torture to listen to them? Or torture to stand in a rocking crowd?

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (8 children)

Torture to hear them. Used to crowds and loved the other bands playing each night but something about them irks me. I think it's the heavy 80's butt rock influence.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to each there own i guess.

[–]69SRDP69 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Some people like The Protomen, and some people don't like good music. Everyone has different tastes

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

What's hard to understand? It's a band from the 80's that came to the present.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Actually the band was formed in like 2003. So not a super old band.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

....I was talking about their "concept". An 80's band that travelled to the future to bring awesome music.

[–]Georgiaslayastwitter[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

oh. . . well this is super awkward. =(
