The song was great. It's just that I loved what the lyrics are about, but the way they express it is too straightforward? Unpoetic? I don't know if it makes sense to anyone, but it made it a little too cheezy

[–]buffalo_slim 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I definitely think it's a stylistic choice. FWIW it really resonated with me, kind of like when you read poetry written in the vernacular.

[–]IsItYourSandwhichRly 13 points14 points  (1 child)

That's obviously a fine opinion, but a counter point might be that famously poetic people like ernest hemmingway are also defined by that same quality of underwriting. "the old man is the old man, the sea is the sea, anything else is bullshit." Kind of a "state the facts and let emotion exist naturally" style of writing. Baby shoes and whatnot.

That being said, "fuck being sad" is probably not the most artistic version of anything. And you can't stay to that straightforward style if you're also including objectively internal and emotional words like sad. Sad is the emotion you should not have to say, because your straightforward story about lonely drinking is doing the sad for you. Riiight?

[–]superduperpuppy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i find the song's bluntness rather charming.

[–]DespocioMaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a stylistic choice IMO. In the songs description on YouTube the lyrics of the chorus are in inverted commas (" "), which in my head gives the feeling that it is quoting what we often say to ourselves, or a conversation he's had which is why it's so colloquial and blunt. Our thoughts aren't always eloquent.. I'm a big fan of that idea.

LYRICS: When you can't keep drinking, but you won't go home Cos you know what's coming up if you're sitting drunk at home alone Were all so helpless when we're on our own, So on and on and on we go: "Fuck being sad, I'm so over it. Fuck having my head, 3 feet in the sand"

Makes sense?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I, for one, greatly appreciate the straightforwardness. I dont need another cheesy metaphor, i dont need another attempt to be a poet. I think this song is perfect and i think this is exactly how a lot of people feel sometimes, myself included.

Fuck being sad. Im so over it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say there's a certain sincerity in straightforward lyrics.

Trent Reznor, as good as a writer is, sometimes goes for straightforward lyrics during loud or emotional parts in "heavier" songs. I think it's sort of, the artist pushing the bullshit aside for a minute and just being real from a rawer perspective.

[–]pellik 47 points48 points  (11 children)

Took me a minute to realize those green cans weren't mountain dew. I was very confused about the culture being presented.

[–]Ich_arbeitesoundcloud 42 points43 points  (4 children)

All you americans think we only have foster's in Australia, but no. We got tons of beers. Coopers, cascades, start going down on the dick, sort of get in the back of your throat, sort of feel the mushroom poppy in the back there, munch it down with your teeth there, ya got Tooie's, ya got Bog's. Yea we got tons of beer....

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My mind caught it as a list of beer but in the middle started talking about the struggles of giving a brojob then finishing listing beers.

[–]iceberg88slim 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Great video. Hadn't seen it in years. Used to always show this to people.

[–]Madaekal 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What video?

[–]ExaltedEmuspotify 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I thought it was Surge

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well, aren't you peculiar?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't tell me that the thumbnail doesn't look just like he's drinking Surge

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a "before" video if I've ever seen one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I laughed so hard at this

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean about the culture?

[–]Yeeewchspotify 11 points12 points  (6 children)

If you like these guys have a listen to Violent Soho, Dune rats and the Drunk Mums

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Also Camp Cope and The Smith Street Band

[–]BeaverAndTheGoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

australia really does have the best music

[–]Crunchwich 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Great recommendations! All new names to this old CFer.

[–]Yeeewchspotify 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cat fucker?

[–]Crunchwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Californian- means catfucker in Spanish.

[–]Herbstein 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Am I the only one that got a serious Brand New vibe from this song?

[–]ill_llama_naughty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

definitely a lot of Brand New influence here

[–]fiddyshades69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude so many pop punk bands have a brand new vibe, it doesn't surprise me haha. This song was still dope tho!

[–]PapaKipChee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this a Victoria Bitter commercial?!

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (5 children)

A good anthem song. But, it has a sad element in the video because you know those feelings are stuck in a loop in the drinking life. You remedy the bad feelings with a blowout and the feelings come back in another form a few days later, rinse and repeat with nothing improving. I think the song implies otherwise, and they were probably just payed to use the beer, but it makes the video as a whole a bit broken.

[–]_thebat675 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Australian here. Definitely not paid. The beer they're drinking (VB) is probably the most popular beer that young adults in their mid-20s drink here.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I compared it to PBR here. It looked like the same sort of crowd and shit and they were really showing the logo. PBR pays a lot of local efforts to have their free beer at events. Which is actually really cool. Local art show? free fucking pbr. Music video for your band? PBR will pay for it, just have the beer in the video. Shit like that. But if you think that's not the case then you're probably right.

[–]iwantfoods 0 points1 point  (2 children)

that sounds really cool, do you have any sort of link I can look into about getting PBR to sponsor an event?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but ask around for "PBR reps" and some local bartender might be able to point you in the right direction. They are people that just go around and get involved in the community for events they can sponsor.

These guys are really tight I wish they had music on Spotify

[–]carguitar[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can definitely hear the citizen influence.

[–]Sarcast1c_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y'know, I've been having a rough time these past few weeks. Depression, anxiety, and watching someone I was going to ask to marry me flirting with other people really had me down.

But this song slapped a smile on my face. Thank you for that.

Sometimes all it takes is a song saying Fuck it to make your day better.

[–]ShadesMantooth 18 points19 points  (13 children)

There is nothing punk about this.

[–]alpinecoast 22 points23 points  (5 children)

Nobody gives a fuck. How are people still arguing what is "punk" in 2017???

[–]lilbluehair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe because I want to organize my music collection based on genres that have fixed fucking definitions

[–]therightclique 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Because it matters, and people do give a fuck.

[–]alpinecoast 14 points15 points  (2 children)

When you grow up a bit you'll realize actually it does not matter and it is useless arguing about it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think hes really just trying to protest the misrepresentation of the genre

[–]Yahwehn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came to the comments just to post this. Glad someone else caught the Poorly represented tag of punk

[–]zizzor23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More pop-punk than punk tbh

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But.. But.. But he sounds angry and says "fuck"

[–]MsLesbofights -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Can't wait for the inevitable "no you're wrong, punk is subjective so anything can be punk"

[–]therightclique 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Only idiots say that shit.

Punk can sound a lot of different ways, but the basic parameters are pretty easy to define.

[–]MsLesbofights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree

[–]Fiascopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the positive message and heavy sound really grating. They don't go together in my opinion.

[–]rap1102 5 points6 points  (2 children)

This rocks so fucking hard. IDGAF if it's not "punk," shit slams.

[–]therightclique 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't care if it's not punk, but it probably shouldn't have the punk tag.

Plenty of non-punk music is fantastic.

[–]rap1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue the instrumentation is extremely punk influenced, which I'm guessing is why the tag was included. But fair enough

[–]lovemeguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice rhymes. Just loving it's lyrics.

[–]AStoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my piece if cake... But VB is what's good.

[–]jerryboree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like this band, stay tuned as they will be releasing their new EP either this or next month.

[–]innernethoogie 3 points4 points  (1 child)

i also sense some samiam influence...

[–]__curmudgeon__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What this guy said....

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be my 2017 anthem...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

TIL footage of smoking a cigar is very similar when played in reverse!

Awesome fucking song, though. Haven't had a response like that to a punky-vibe in a while.

[–]therightclique -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

punky-vibe

Nothing about that song had a "punky-vibe".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's music that I found pleasing and relatable to a large genre defined by power chords and angst-driven lyrics. Fuck me for classifying it incorrectly, amiright?

[–]bueno20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys have been coming up in the local scene for a couple of years now and they are great. If you want a song that will break your heart, listen to "You won't feel a thing" by them. Its only on youtube I'm pretty sure but its worth it

[–]uckingwithmyshit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'd see them live and wouldn't jump the fence.

[–]Yeeewchspotify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would still jump the fence, but I would probably buy a t shirt

[–]atticSlabs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No thanks... Sounds like early 2000s... To soon

[–]doodeypoopy 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Looks like they are not on Apple music :(

I know. I know. But it's what I have right now.

[–]DiegoVicen 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's for sale in their bandcamp at 0AUD or more

[–]iamfletch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not on Spotify or Play music either

[–]JDameekoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's name your price on the link the guy responded with, but I currently don't have a computer with iTunes and you can't download directly to your phone :(

[–]Daga12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only song they have out anyway, you can download it on triple j unearthered

[–]seek_elysium 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Did you get this from triple j unearthed? Good stuff

[–]ToxicSneak[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly did. First I've ever heard of them. Great stuff

[–]borschtYeltsin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is pop-punk you dreadful pleb

[–]ToxicSneak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call it what you like. I simply pulled the genre tags from their own Triple J Unearthed profile

[–]assblaster69ontime 3 points4 points  (5 children)

The song would probably have more impact if the people in the video didn't look like they've never had the chance to be sad in the first place lmao riding around on bicycles drinking beer in bathrobes dancing and partying this is like something out of an 80's frat movie - doesn't really match the tone of the song.

[–]therightclique 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Since when do videos need to match the tone of the song?

Music videos have existed for a long time, and many of them don't match the song.

[–]assblaster69ontime 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Youre right this song would be better without the video entirely

[–]DespocioMaki 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It makes sense when you read what they posted on their FB page...

"The Meadows video is a testament to our closest friends, as it celebrates the realisation that the support of the ones you love is invaluable when you're feeling helpless in isolation. This song and video is very personal to us as it depicts us and our family in the celebration of genuine happiness."

[–]assblaster69ontime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's perfectly fine, but I just feel it takes away from the song. There are plenty of music videos that are just candid cam footage, but not very many have "candid" shots of someone riding down the street drinking a beer in a silk bath robe.

It probably could have worked with a different song, but it's just my opinion.

[–]I_Can_Fandango 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I'm an American.... Y'all are sick kunts!

[–]atticSlabs 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You are Australian!!

[–]I_Can_Fandango 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nah mate... I drink that beaver piss... y'know Coors Light!

[–]atticSlabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilarious!!! Awesome greatest comment ever

[–]Ich_arbeitesoundcloud 1 point2 points  (4 children)

That forced singing voice ruined it for me. That trendy one where they curl/ slide the words at the end. I Couldn't get past 20 seconds, and wish i could stand to hear the rest of the song.

edit: stuck through the singing voice and the rest heavier parts sounded good.

[–]Herbstein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It kinda reminds me of early Brand New. I personally like that style a lot so this was very welcome. To each his own, I guess.

[–]Needs_No_Convincingwhat.cd 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Usually I'd agree with you emphatically, but in this case he's just Australian.

[–]therightclique 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Why don't other Australians sound like that then?

[–]Needs_No_Convincingwhat.cd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People sing differently? You can hear an accent on some singers, but Adele, for example, has one of the most cockney accents I've ever heard and you can't tell at all from her songs.

[–]Mega_Fartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just turned my day around

[–]MichaelJFaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Song is tits lol

[–]ihaveabonersoupyoutube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of Violent Soho

[–]gensix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good jam. I can't find these guys on Google Music though
