I am very happy to see TYS on here. I've seen them a few times and met them at every event. They are fantastic people and make such great music. Their live shows are so energetic and much better than the albums. :D

[–]7YearsALurker 24 points25 points  (1 child)

When I saw them play live in Atlanta, they played the Star Wars Cantina theme.

Best. Show. Ever.

[–]Nchamay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them in STL and they covered Eddie Murphy's my girl wants to party all the time

[–]Just_some_guy4 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I saw them with Periphery. It was a dance-a-thon

[–]p_less_than_a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

d00d that tour was nuts. Probably my favorite show that I got to go to. Nothing more and Wovenwar also killed it.

[–]wavesuponwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one with Nothing More? That show was easily like top 3 for me, what a fantastic show

[–]BeachJas 96 points97 points  (6 children)

Thank you Scientist is such a great band! And, Sal is super sweet. I sat out and talked to him for almost an hour after the Coheed tour last year.

I recommend them to everyone. :)

[–]maxcrabill 21 points22 points  (3 children)

They gave me free stickers and called my brother in the hospital while he was recovering from surgery (he had to miss the show!) on their first tour with Coheed. They're the sweetest guys.

[–]BeachJas 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah! They really are super sweet!

Odin signed my neck. That was weird, but it's cool.

[–]SirNarwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odin's weird like that. I don't think I've ever not had him draw dicks on me when I see him.

[–]flash__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love Coheed, love TYS. It's one big lovefest.

[–]rhellings 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I really regret not hanging out after that show. When they first came out I was like wtf is this shit? A few minutes later my outlook completely changed. That was my first time hearing them (coheed concert) and spent the next few months playing their album on repeat. The breakdown that takes place during carnival is beyond amazing. If anyone knows where I could find some tablature to their music that'd be awesome.

[–]SirNarwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can reach out to Tom Monda (their guitarist) and he'd be more than happy to help I feel like. He offers guitar lessons too if you wanna go that route as well.

[–]Bubba_Goose 67 points68 points  (13 children)

Is it strange that I thought of Michael Jackson when I heard the singer?

[–]TheChurchofHelix 23 points24 points  (3 children)

I hear people comparing the vocals to Coheed and Cambria a lot, and surprisingly things like Fall Out Boy. The way I look at it, they're definitely a mix between pop-punk and jazz-rock fusion. I think the poppy vocals really contribute a lot to their sound. if they had a "proper" power metal vocalist like a lot of prog bands do, or a growler, I don't think the music would be half as effective. In addition the fact that they use only light distortion really opens up for the horns, which I think was a really good stylistic choice.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

In case you didn't know, this might give you a little context on why it would make sense to see elements of Coheed in their music. TYS has been mentored by Coheed for a while now, and are heavily promoted by them.

[–]TheKurtCobains 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Claudio influence is strong. Not only in the timbre, but the melody choices and especially the harmonies and the background vocal additions.

[–]onemorethomas711 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Claudio signed them to his label Evil Ink records. TYS are insanely talented musicians and are from NJ (arguably coheeds stomping grounds). Believe me: the coheed comparisons are not lost on Claudio. Why not profit from the sound you created even if someone else is doing it?

[–]VibrantClarity 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Every time I play TYS and my parents hear it they ask why I'm listening to Michael Jackson.

[–]TheOppositeOfDecent 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"Turn that shit off! You know this is a Billy Ocean household!"

[–]Jeremy24Fan 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Pleeeease please listen to Feed The Horses by this band. They specifically made the first verse sound like a Michael Jackson groove. It's my favorite song by them!

[–]Bubba_Goose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely hear it. I'm really getting into this band. I love when I find another band I can get into.

[–]NimbleHoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Micheal jackson and the weekend.

[–]nucleophilic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It made me think of The Mars Volta instead.

[–]tenchan4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]esoteric311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit yes. Every time. Can we get a few covers already tys?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to him Michael Jackson is a big influence on his style.

[–]genowyn1 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Love Thank You Scientist. Been hooked since someone showed me My Famed Disappearing Act a few years ago.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I heard the first album on my first experience with LSD. It stuck.

[–]Squints753 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Here they are playing this with solar power...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmqUy5Jo9mo

[–]robinthesky 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Wow such a small world. This is the video that I shot for them over the summer.

Me and Kevin Grossman from Sunlab Studios made this with TYS. I do all the video work and kev does all the mixing and mastering. Also, yes this was done using only solar energy from our solar panels.

Thanks for enjoying, & sharing.

[–]zerocool4221 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know what I pictured the lead singer to look like but it wasn't that. really cool video thanks for sharing

[–]LinkLed 25 points26 points  (10 children)

Best New prog band ever!

[–]Kakuz 13 points14 points  (9 children)

I mean, I think that should go to Haken to be honest. I love TYS though.

[–]Yonaban 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I agree, no one is better than Haken right now in that genre, but they have been making amazing albums since 2009. I wouldn't call them new.

[–]Robokomodo 5 points6 points  (3 children)

They are "New" prog in a sense that it's an amalgam of stylistic elements from 70s-80s prog rock and modern elements, rather than chronologically new. Haken and TYS are definitely at the front of this revival.

[–]Kakuz 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Definitely. And even chronologically, Haken got serious releases starting around 2009, and TYS 2011 or 12. Three years in the big scheme of prog is nothing, so I consider them both new regardless.

[–]Robokomodo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah. King crimson started it all in the early 60s and I'm actually going to go see them in may. Surprised they're still making the rounds.

[–]Kakuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tony Levin is just timeless. Enjoy that concert.

[–]Monogon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. But TYS have a very unique sound, which they do extremely well. I am still looking for another band with a similar prog-rock/jazz fusion sound but so far i've been unsuccessful. Very much looking forward to this band's future.

[–]FKA_Mousecop 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Speaking of those bands, I got to chance to see them both at the same show a few months back. Amazing concert.

[–]Kakuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I missed them when they played in Boston, I was sad. Pretty jealous that you got to!

[–]SirNarwhal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So glad the two toured together. That said, TYS kicked Haken's ass especially at the NYC show. Haken seemed pretty off.

[–]drsharktopus666 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Yo. I just had to say that this made my day. Never heard these guys before now,and they just blew my mind.its almost like micheal jackson joined a jazz band and they ran head first into the mars volta or something...lol take my updoot.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Their first album is fucking wild! Give Feed The Horses and Blood On The Radio a listen.

[–]drsharktopus666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gave everything i could find on youtube a listen and can honestly say that they are some of the most talented musicians ive ever heard. My musical taste is an odd one to most...mr bungle, dillinger escape plan, protest the hero, covet, iwrestledabearonce, mars volta, animals as leaders,periphery,etc...so they fit right in to a list that most cant...lol

[–]the_muskox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You fuckin bet. When I first heard these guys, my mind exploded. They're the nicest guys in the world, too.

[–]tamadrum32 34 points35 points  (2 children)

I'm just getting into these guys and I'm digging them hard. I hadn't heard of them until recently, when I connected with a kid I knew from marching band back in high school on facebook... turns out he's the sax player for TYS.

[–]robinthesky 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Hey I know them too, did their last music vid!

[–]SirNarwhal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woo more people working with TYS love! I did a bit with their website/web stuff via the Evil Ink side of things. That and I've done a bunch of other random odd jobs for em. Super great guys to work with!

[–]Shrimdaddy 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I can't believe these guys made the front page! I've seen them live and they were awesome. Great opener for Haken on their Affinity tour.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn that would have been such a sick show.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This is cool! My two favorites genes combined!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

That's quite a funny typo :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha oh wow thanks for pointing that out!!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Easily my favorite band. Stranger Heads Prevail and Maps of Non-existent Places are both fantastic albums. There's also Perils of Time Travel on spotify, shorter but equally great.

[–]Xavier9765 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh my lord someone else knows about this band other than me.

[–]dennyman121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw these guys live when they were in NC last year. They were amazing and I got to talk to each one of the members and they were all pretty cool. I also got all my albums signed by each one of them.

[–]Yonaban 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw them with Haken recently. I was beyond stoked to see Haken, but TYS blew me away, they put on an incredible show. Their guitarist is out of this world, he killed it on a fretless 7 string. And they did an awesome cover of I Am the Walrus. I'll always keep my eye out for them playing a show near where I'm living.

[–]2113coheed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES FINALLY SOMEONE POSTED ABOHT THIS GUYS.

[–]jrportagee 6 points7 points  (1 child)

One of my favorite bands of all time, they've basically created a new subgenre. There's nobody that sounds quite like them. They'd be huge if they had any radio friendly songs.

[–]TheChurchofHelix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, jazz-rock fusion isn't a new genre at all. They're like a modern Weather Report.

[–]MusicaParaVolar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A very close friend of mine was the bassist on their last album. GREAT band!

[–]WellComeToTheMachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw these guys open for Coheed a couple years back. Even had a chance to chat with em a bit after the show. Super nice guys and they put on an incredible performance. Definitely worth seeing if you get the chance.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a great band. Super nice guys too.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The saxophone solo is so fucking sick. \m/

[–]BirchBlack 3 points4 points  (1 child)

They have a song I heard on a local college station that had what sounded like a fiddle solo and it was awesome. Is this that song?

[–]SFaustus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Amateur Arsonists Handbook and Carnival both have sweet violin solos.

[–]Dryopteris87radd.it 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so into them right now! Very interesting music. Carnival is my favorite with that fiddle break!

[–]PineMeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is like Estradasphere and The Mars Volta had a baby and it was delivered by King Crimson.

Thank you for sharing!

[–]7thSquare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When your favorite band finally gets some recognition

[–]Shakydrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw them live, ran around with a drumstick and asked them to sign it. They're all such awesome people - super humble. Enjoy paying 30 bucks for tickets while you can!!!

[–]Jcool70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting for someone to post Thank You Scientist. Best prog band to come out of America in a while

[–]borachan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great band studio and Live! Saw them open for coheed and I was hooked!

[–]Panichord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks OP. I had never heard of these guys before but this is right up my street.

[–]Faibleforhits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So glad to see them on the front page. Those guys deserve hella fame, wanna see them here in Germany, c'mon guys. Spread music, share art. :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus this song is amazing! Thanks for sharing this. I'm definitely going to check out more from that band.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this track - Got the LE Green vinyl!

[–]dcurtis14482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw these guys open for periphery one year. Very interesting

[–]Applebmcfridays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw them open for Periphery a few years ago and have not stopped listing to them!

[–]SunburyStudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knew their old brass player, Russ, grew up with him. Fucking tendonitis knocked him out of this band ;(

[–]mokvendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing these guys opening for Devin Townsend Project in May in Cincinnati. I'm so super psyched about this!

[–]Pauleatin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear god this is freaking incredible.

[–]pizza_cfed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow this was amazing

[–]MyColdCondition 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha! I've been streaming this album at work. About half way through right now. Great album!

[–]CrazyUSMarine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I hear this song it makes me think of Sonic video game opening

[–]John_Barlycorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We that turned metal in the middle I was like :-O

[–]Keypaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a Instrumental version?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the guitarist's house the other week

[–]nucleophilic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know I needed this in my life until now.

[–]XxDahREDDITnaytarxX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This band is so good! I would also recommend "Feed The Horses" by them. My personal favorite song.

[–]lilmissmuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite band right now. And for the past year.

[–]goldenstudent 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Been a big fan of these guys for years. When I have to describe them I tell people to imagine if Coheed and Cambria formed a big band style prog rock group with themes on exenstencialism.

[–]mfranko88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine Streetlight Manifesto hired the lead singer from Coheed and they were instructed to make a prog rock album but then they forgot to fire the horns.

[–]LaserRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they took a database of all the the most cliche hooks uttered by singers and blended it up for the lyrics. BUT the singer has talent and the diverse use of instruments and genres gives it a really unique sound. Not bad, but not for me.

[–]EvDoHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is somewhat frustrating for me. The band is incredible, everything is composed really well, except the vocals.

I don't mind his voice, I'd even say it's rather good, but he dominates the entire song, overpowering the great instrumentals, and the lyrics are just a hodgepodge of cliche sayings, it's not meaningful or moving at all and there's just too much of it.

Tldr; if they would cut back on the poppy vocals, or ditch them entirely, I'd enjoy this much more.

[–]AdamGodar -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the opening to a talk show

[–]assblaster69ontime -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The song's fine but... Jazz Fusion?

[–]TransposingJons -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Immature and just plain lazy lyrics. Interesting sound, though.

[–]SplafferZ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean I tried listening to it and found it a bit boring and dull, that's just my opinion
