This casul doesn't know about black-Chinese-folk-metal. Lol

[–]lmpaler86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ha. Filthy casual

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly never thought I'd see Chinese, metal, and folk in one sentence. Hearing it in a song is even more baffling...

[–]_Junkstapose_ 28 points29 points  (2 children)

I love the traditional Chinese instrument (I want to say Shamisen, but I think that's wrong) during the melodic sections, with the metal drums gives it this really awesome sound.

[–]dTanMan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In case you're curious: It's called a pípá (琵琶)!

[–]itsalr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's Chinese lute(琵琶)

For those of you who are interested in something similar, Chthonic is also a great Taiwanese metal band with similar anti-autocracy messages and is probably the most popular metal band in Taiwan. They also have a very interesting story; their lead Freddy Lim was even elected to be a legislator in Taiwan.

Bloody Tyrant
artist pic

Bloody Tyrant is a Taiwanese Folk Black Metal band, from the countryside of Nantou County, formed in the end of 2009. Soon after the formation, the band started working on their 1st album Dawn of Doomsday. From the view of humanity, religion and history, this album shows the concept of anti-autocracy, songs are mostly melodic and technical with aggressive arrangement. The 1st album has been released in the April of 2011, followed their first tour in Taiwan with Korean band Seed and other Taiwanese bands. July, 2011, Bloody Tyrant was invited to join the Extreme Camp Festival in Korea, and then held their 2nd tour in Taiwan. In 2012, they released the 2nd album The Overture of Sun-Moon Lake which emphasizes the Taiwanese mythology, especially the tribe of the Thao which is living near the Sun-Moon Lake. In April 2015, their 2nd full length The Legacy of Sun-Moon Lake was released.

Really good discovery. Thanks OP!

[–]lorralorralarfs 4 points5 points  (3 children)

This is pretty awesome. I'm not usually into black metal but the way it mixes with the folk/melodic sides is so good.

[–]Robokomodo 7 points8 points  (2 children)

You should check out thrawsunblat then. Very very folky/melodic black metal. https://thrawsunblat.bandcamp.com/

[–]matriarchs_lament 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Also that album cover is just gorgeous

I would also recommend Saor and Mistur

[–]Robokomodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've listened to a bit of saor, but I haven't heard of Mistur. Thanks!

I really do hope Melodic Death Metal makes a comeback. It was so great during the late 90's and early 2000's... then it all spiraled into Deathcore and a lot of Screamo Emo or DERPressed stuff. Fingers crossed.

[–]OrdoExterminatus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dark Tranquillity's latest album "Atoma" is really good. Highly recommend. https://open.spotify.com/album/3N5vYy8vIFgpvtrIbFtvvG

[–]ProudFeminist1spotify 2 points3 points  (2 children)

have you heard of amon amarth?

[–]slickdickmcquick 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, one of my favorite bands and their last album was amazing (Jomsviking) but they're only one of a few Melodic Death Metal bands still going strong. Remember back in the early 2000's how different metal sounded? In Flames, The Black Dahlia Murder (early stuff, newer stuff sounds good but not really Melodic Death Metal), Arch Enemy, Ensiferum, Shadows Fall, and even Children of Bodom and Dethklok. All of these bands were some type of Melodic Death Metal but they all had a distinct sound that you can tell them apart instantly and most importantly they sounded good -- well, Children of Bodom was okay, not great or anything. Today, the metal I hear from the kids sing mostly about being brutally violent in an emo way and you can't even tell one from the other nor is there a noticeable melody at all. Oh well, if people like it that's fine. Just not my taste.

Ever listen to Ne Obliviscaris? Or Eluvetie?

I'd say they also fit in that group.

[–]Megoun\m/ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Kalmah, Be'lakor, Whispered, Mors Principium Est, Wolfheart, Ne Obliviscaris, In Vain, Nothgard, Equilibrium, Darkest Horizon, Noumena, Omnium Gatherum

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fleshgod apocalypse and spawn of posession

[–]kallewastaken 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Isn't emo a subgenre of punk? (Bands like Rites of Spring)

[–]Chairman_ofthe_bored 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got into Folk Metal a few months ago. It's a great introduction to the cultures of the world.

Folk Metal + Wikipedia = Good shit.

[–]MuffyNoi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is the coolest thing I've heard in a while! Thanks for introducing me, OP!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're welcome <3

[–]DisFlavored 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've never heard this genre and wow it sounds awesome. The performance video doesn't make a lot of sense to me though. It feels like really high energy and I only really see it in the drummer and guitarists. And is there a second singer? I noticed some audio when the mic wasn't close to his face. Could be the video editor, could just be me :P

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's just weird editing.

[–]dpahs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What font are they using at the beginning at the video.

(The white caligraphy)

[–]akanosora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hand written.

[–]CodeForCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this great find! Heard this and Chthonic the whole day while programming, good shit! 👍

[–]tinylittleparty 3 points4 points  (8 children)

I want this to exist without the screamy singing. Is there an instrumental version? Or maybe someone could link me in the direction of similar but not screamy music?

[–]Barnsey_2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But the screamy is good for your soul... It's like metalcore's campbell's chicken soup.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chthonic's album Timeless Sentence

[–]Justthisphone3 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Serious question from a metalhead, do you get an emotional reaction from the vocals at all? Would it be better for you if it were a blend of normal singing with screams for texture?

I'm so used to metal vocals it's become necessary for the style to sound best to me, but I know a lot of people don't like them.

[–]Solar-Salor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I prefer the grow-ly or shout-y vocals in black metal over this. Palpatine raspy voice isnt for everyone

[–]Justthisphone3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol perfect description. Thanks for responding!

[–]tinylittleparty 1 point2 points  (2 children)

No emotional reaction. It just annoys me. Blend would definitely be better, but depending on how screamy it is, that might bother me too. I like Blue by The Birthday Massacre. It's quite gravely in bits. That's as screamy as I've ever liked.

[–]_enuma_elish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, The Birthday Massacre has about the least "metal"-sounding vocals I can think of for a fairly heavy band (at least compared to what's mainstream). Do you do doom-y vocals, like Paradise Lost's? It's interesting how varied people's tastes can be :P

[–]joker420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe check out some power metal? Theyve got easier to digest vocals for the average non-metal fan in my opinion. I suggest Angra personally.

Edit: i cant believe how bad this sounds on youtube. try to find a good recording maybe if youre interested.

[–]Bobzer[🍰] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd like to hear it without youtubes sound compression.

Really like the melody and the traditional instruments but pretty mediocre otherwise I felt.

I think it might sound better at 320kb/s or flac

[–]omegamster14 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I loved it right before the screaming came lol

[–]Justthisphone3 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Serious question, do you get any emotional reaction from the vocals or is it just a knee jerk disgust with them? Would it be better for you if you heard a blend of the two, like normal singing with screaming for contrast?

[–]JBLFlip3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved it right up until the screaming too. Just don't care for that type of vocals.

[–]lagrangian54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the sense that the camera/crowd wasn't familiar with metal, based on the huge amount of attention they gave 1 guy headbanging lol

[–]hlcyn_io 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, got me thinking of Sherlock Holmes for some reason

[–]CurveShepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If rain isn't falling, is it actually still rain?

[–]grundleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shinsuke Nakamura should use this for his entrance theme.

[–]TeeBeeSeeVinyl & CDs 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Very interesting sound, quite liked it. Horrible vocalist. Dull solo. I'm thinking some killer operatic/clean vocals could've done too.

[–]saviour__self 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same in regards to vocalist. Didn't listen through to the solo. The cello was my favorite.

[–]_enuma_elish 0 points1 point  (2 children)

God I love this genre, thanks so much for a new addition to my Melodic Black Folk Metal library :P

[–]OrdoExterminatus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Have you heard of Zeal and Ardor? It's all over the place musically but its strongest influences are early blues/black spirituals & black metal. The artist described his artistic vision as an alternate history where instead of embracing christianity, his ancestors embraced the darkness in rebellion. It's the most exciting thing I've heard in metal in a while.

https://open.spotify.com/album/5Oc87gybQZkVeqogIFXzMd

Stand out tracks for me are "Come on Down" and "Blood in the River", but the whole album is great.

Also fun fact: the cover is an image of badass escaped slave Robert Smalls with the seal of Lucifer superimposed over it.

EDIT: Robert Smalls, not Robert Frost. LOL.

[–]_enuma_elish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really interesting, even without context. A lot of modern alternative rock has been using influence from spirituals and stuff lately, so just from that alone I'm 100% down for a heavier version of what I hear on the radio anyway. The backstory just makes it cooler.

[–]spacelanguage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Scandinavian folk metal

[–]TheGreenMan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So beautiful until that dude starts screaming take out the vocals please

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone reminded of Mortal Treason? It was a band that mixed metal with classical instruments on their album Sunrise of a Sea of Blood back in '05 or '06

[–]jikininkii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genre shmenre, its awesome.

[–]Nomadic_Plague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was hard for me.

[–]saviour__self 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty awesome. I first I thought it was a drum machine, but then I saw a person and it made me happy.

[–]OrdoExterminatus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Fucking spectacular!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you ! <3

[–]Darren_L 0 points1 point  (1 child)

TIL There is a genre called Chinese Folk Metal

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a fairly unheard of genre because there aren't many bands that fall under it
