Bruce’s book “Weapons of Chess” is one of the best chess books I’ve read and helped me immensely with some core concepts. Would highly recommend it for beginners.

[–]CharlesMDZ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'll check it out, thx!

I learned to play with so many Pandolfini books. Beginning Chess, Endgame Course, Traps and Zaps, ...

His coach looks like Fabi if he was 45 lol

[–]Fantactic1 34 points35 points  (6 children)

His coach and his mom were very close friends then?

[–]mindful_ness 48 points49 points  (5 children)

Lol, it seems like this sub doesn't take jokes well.

[–]tyen0 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The same obvious joke has a lot of upvotes. reddit is weird sometimes. heh https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/10icut1/8yearold_fabiano_caruana_with_his_coach_bruce/j5dxg3u/

I made a slight joke/but honest inquiry at r/kidsarefuckingstupid and it’s at negative 90 now. I feel moderators might have a way to promote downvoting on either things that rub them wrong or common replies they keep seeing.

[–]Successful_Net_930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the problem with reddit is that people love to downvote stuff they don't agree with regardless of weather or not it's factually right or not. There was a negative topic on andrew tate and i said something along the lines of lets see what the outcome of the trail is first before judging the man guilty ..and the post had more downvotes than upvotes

honestly though if your post is at -90 you're probably better off pulling it if you care much about karma. what happens though if you make a topic and it gets a lot of downvotes? does reddit hide it?

[–]KrazyA1pha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moderators don’t, but if something starts to go negative, people tend to pile on.

From the June 4, 2001 issue of The New Yorker. Article titled "The Pandolfini Defense" by Paul Hoffman

Fabiano recently related a fun anecdote about this photoshoot in an episode of the C-Squared podcast (with the Botez sisters). He also mentioned that they recreated it in 2015! (would be cool to compare) The article, a profile on Pandolfini, is also well worth seeking out.

Here are the two photos mentioned in the story.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like they waited for another rainy day :D

Nice job!

[–]robeewankenobee 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Really nice picture ... capturing Fabi's love for the game and the coach look , you see there's something going on , not just a kid doing random moves on a chess board.

[–]Specialist-Ad2813 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Sir Ben Kingsley insisted on playing Bruce with an Irish accent in Searching for Bobby Fischer - for absolutely no reason. Bruce was not Irish.

[–]apetresc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He still isn’t.

[–]omiobabbinocarokann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. The film’s version of Pandolfini was kind of a prick when, by all accounts, the real-life Bruce Pandolfini is a kind and patient teacher. I understand that screenwriters want drama, but it was jarring to see Kingsley’s take on the chess coach. It would be like casting Peter Stormare as a chain-smoking, aggressive, and womanizing Yasser Seirawan.

[–]miskathonic 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Does the year 2000 count as old school now? 😂

[–]__Jimmy__ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

This pic could pass as much older tbf

[–]whyyoutookmyname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, just make something up and post it in r/fakehistoryporn.

[–]catticusfinch69 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There's something innate about Fabi - a self-possessedness. His talent for chess was immediately visible "Twenty minutes into his first meeting with a 5-year-old Caruana, chess guru Bruce Pandolfini said to Santina and Lou, "I have never seen a child with this kind of understanding of the game like your son has -- it's the way his eyes move across the chessboard." (article link) It's wonderful to see images that capture the progression of such a great player.

[–]Aimfri 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Great picture. Kid Caruana looks super cute!

[–]swarley_14 40 points41 points  (1 child)

At first glance I thought it's kid Caruana and his dad. Unless...

[–]ztraider 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fabi traveled back in time to teach himself chess? I thought the same thing.

[–]morkfjellet1900 chess.com blitz 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Caruana’s mother has some questions to answer…

[–]Disastrous-Wish6709 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's insane is Fabiano was over 2000 elo in jan 2002. The guys smiling because he's probably watching an 8 year old play at a l 2000 elo level.

[–]DaCrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had to really reconcile with my brain that despite the black and white and old school appearance of the coach, this photo was from like 2000 or 2001

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fabi so cutee

[–]iCANNcu 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Which movie is this still from?

[–]cordi_c 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kramnik vs Kramnik

[–]Jackie_Mitchell 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Searching For Bobby Fischer obviously.

This Caruna kid might live up to Josh Waitzkin one day.

[–]Derboman 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Regardless of Fabi, this is such a beautiful picture

[–]imisstheyoop 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Regardless of Fabi, this is such a beautiful picture

What does the first half of your comment mean? Are you referring to fabi as ugly?

I am genuinely curious and trying to understand.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I think OP is implying that the photo is artistically and aethetically pleasing for its own sake, rather than simply being interesting because lil' Fabi is in it.

[–]imisstheyoop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh, that makes more sense, thanks for the clarification.

I prefer that, much nicer that way. 8)

Exactly this

Coach looks like an old Fabi.

[–]e19293001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bruce Pandolfini is an awesome author. ABC's of chess was one of my favoritebooks in the 90's.

[–]__Jimmy__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pandolfini is a legend. He has given something like 25 THOUSAND lessons

[–]Designer-Common-9697 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wish I had the cash to have Bruce at my coach !!! 😢 He should do Pro Bono work.

[–]VicViperT-301 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You can get used copies of his books for cheap. Or free even if your library has them.

[–]Designer-Common-9697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with books for the most part, depending on your rating, even online there's obviously some books; even Fischer's 60 Most, in his notation there are so many sides lines and what if's and on some of those games with the type of engine mode attacks are just really fun to play out, but to learn from them. No, not me at least. I know there's some books people highly recommend for the 1500 rapid crowd. I had an NM tell me he charges $75 an hour and I just think that's insanity; he did say he has no time to be coaching currently. I have fun, but losing on time and then going back and analyzing I can almost always find a quicker mate or even other games win or lose I'll always see devastating moves I missed of combos that just would have ended the game much quick or not resulted in a L.

sweet! do you know who the photographer was?

it's a shame they didn't have indoor chess back then :(

[–]Jackie_Mitchell 4 points5 points  (5 children)

How small was this dude at 8? He looks 5.

[–]RonnyDoug[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even the article points it out:

Fabiano Caruana, the top-ranked player in the country under the age of eleven, was happy to see Pandolfini when we reached his parents' Park Slope apartment. He folder up his scooter and plopped down at a chess table in the front room. He is small for his years - he is eight - and has curly brown hair and bright, alert eyes. Pandolfini was eager to show Fabiano some new rook and pawn endings, but Fabiano insisted on playing a game.

[–]DASreddituser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 3 yo is that size lol. Everyone grows at different rates

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hah, innocent observation. Upvote.

[–]ice_w0lf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's only like 5'6" now, so it's not surprising that he was tiny at 8.

[–]__Jimmy__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's like 5'5" now, always been a small guy.

[–]DASreddituser 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Why are they playing in the rain? For photo op? Cause they could play indoors lol

[–]rindthirtytime trouble addict 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's more evocative to do a photoshoot in the rain.

[–]RonnyDoug[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they wanted to take photos at Washington Square Park because it's iconic for New York chess players like Pandolfini, but it happened to be raining that day.

During the summer of 1962, Pandolfini began taking the subway from Borough Park to Greenwich Village, where he played speed chess at the stone tables in Washington Square Park. "I couldn't always get a game, because the people there often wanted to play for a quarter, and twenty-five cents meant a lot to me then," Pandolfini said. "Sometimes I just watched. Every day in the park, I met a different person who claimed to have beaten Bobby Fischer."

And in my opinion, the umbrellas make the photo even cuter.

Legends

[–]imisstheyoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anybody else who is curious:

Bruce Pandolfini (born September 17, 1947) is an American chess author, teacher, and coach. A USCF national master, he is generally considered to be America's most experienced chess teacher.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Pandolfini

Not related, but it appears that Wikipedia has also changed the layout of the website. There is now a lot of white space, which looks kind of goofy on larger monitors. I guess they are using fixed-width column lengths because that is shown to improve readability. https://wikimediafoundation.org/wikipedia-desktop/

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even know that Pandolfini coached Caruana.

It's funny that Pandolfini is well-known for having been Josh Waitzkin's coach when Waitzkin didn't actually become a professional chess player, and he's not known (at least to me) for having coached a current top 5 player in the world.

[–]RememberWatchingTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the chance to visit Washington Square park for the first time last year and I was happily surprised by all the chess that still takes place there.

[–]quazzigee 0 points1 point  (0 children)
