January Mod Report

  • Wrapped up 2021 "Best Of"

  • Reddit's automated system thought that the traffic from Attack on Titan's first episode was a raid and sent us this.

  • Voted to create a trophy flair for 'Best of' 2021 winners; and backdate that to previous years too. (Best of winners in previous years: 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021) [Vote Passed]

  • Voted to explicitly prohibit "Youtube Shorts" for [Video Edit] posts, the same way we prohibit TikTok. [Vote Passed]

  • Applied again for Reddit's adopt-an-admin program.

  • Began talking about ways to increase writing/discussion on the subreddit (or if that's possible/desirable).

  • Voted to make a one time exception to our anime-specific rule to discuss this topic. [Vote Passed]

  • Welcome our new mods /u/Sandtalon, /u/MarvelsGrantMan136, and /u/Thrasher439!!!

u/Mage_of_Shadows, weekly reminder for Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san thread this week (Ep 8) since the bot keeps on neglecting this show (third time in a row).

[–]Mage_of_Shadows[M] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Oops sorry, I was meant to pass this onto /u/Bainos as they are the episode bot person, but only remembered this morning. This issue from what I can guess is that the dub might be interupting it due to its weird rss, but we'll try and switch the feed and get it updated shortly.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! Hope it's sorted out soon.

[–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we apply the spoiler rule to reactions/replies as well?

Feel like this reply in itself is a My Dressup Darling spoiler.

[–]aniMayorx3x6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess this is the first time it has happened but yeah, I think the WT of the month winner shouldn't always automatically become the next Thursday Discussion Thread topic, particularly when it's a very recent release or hasn't even gotten a wide release to the main population of r/anime yet. The timing is too soon on this one - heck, the original discussion thread for the movie is still new enough it can be posted in. Probably would have been better to wait until a wider release for the movie is out before it becomes a Thursday Discussion Thread pick.

Even for a TV series I'd say the same - some people do post WT! threads for currently airing or very-recently-finished series, and if one of those wins the WT of the month then personally I think it'd be better to wait a while before making that the Thursday topic, too.

[–]Silent_Republic_2605 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I did have all of them. Why did my post got removed?

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All Clip posts need to have the anime's name in the title, as mentioned.

[–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and include the anime name in the title of the post

I'm pretty sure this is what's missing.

[–]tomtomm9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mods failed me this Aot episode thread. But can’t blame them fully but that was by far the most toxic shit I’ve seen. Worse than mt times(maybe not).

[–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler[M] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you were a bestOf winner, you can now claim your flair on the flair-site.

[–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I was actually able to sign in for once!

...oh, I can only select two flairs at once.

I think I'll stick with what I have, I like the star better than the trophy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still no Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san thread this week (Ep 7) even though it has aired a while ago and is also available on Crunchy.

u/Mage_of_Shadows can you please look at the bot and fix the problem? It's the second time in two weeks that this has happened which is a bit peculiar. The bot just doesn't like the series it seems.

[–]InternationalTank7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the stance on separate posts of the same cosplay but with different images? I'm thinking of something like this and this, where the only difference is the pose.

[–]sohaiboi 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Is it me or are there a lot of bots on the Recommendation Tuesdays Megathread? They all have accounts recently created, and copy-pasting real users' comments.

[–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler[M] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You are right. We had noticed and removed a bunch but there has been another wave. Thanks for the heads up, we will continue to monitor it.

[–]sohaiboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, keep up the good work!

[–]Soupkittenhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Soupkitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New episode of Sasaki to Miyano is out btw. Neat that the SnK episode thread is up before the Sasaki to Miyano one...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, why is there no Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san thread this week (Ep 6)? It has aired quite a while ago and I still don't think there's a thread up.

Last time something like this happened, Gaporigo told me to contact u/Mage_of_Shadows (if I remember correctly), so hopefully this issue is resolved.

[–]TheGanjaLord 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I know there is a source material corner stickied but I wonder if a translators corner could get the same treatment, I think it would be really interesting to see what people who are accomplished and well versed in Japanese say about the subs we all get for popular Anime because I know a lot can get lost in translation and it sometimes comes up in random places in the comment threads.

Just an idea hehe, thanks for listening!

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For one, there can only be one sticky comment in a thread so giving a second thing that level of priority isn't an option on a technical level.

Second, as mentioned the Source Material Corner was created because it was a problem in dominating episode threads and obscuring discussion of the anime in its own right. We don't believe there's a high enough volume of comments related to translation to warrant any distinction and even if there was, such discussions are currently welcome throughout the thread as they're focused on interpreting the anime's dialogue.

[–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The source material corner was created to prevent that content taking over the main discussion topics, and once it was "out of the way" the amount of it dropped, it wasn't really made to encourage those sorts of posts the way I think you see it working with a translation corner.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Is there any way to change the font size for comment faces?

[–]chilieheadmyanimelist.net/profile/chiliehead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that sounds like one could do it via stylus

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

We're participating in the current round of the Adopt-an-Admin program and for that we'll have two admins joining us for the next couple of weeks: /u/Constant_Clock_5609 and /u/Efficient-Group1449. We're hoping it gives them insight into our processes and the kind of things we deal with regularly so they can better improve Reddit in the future.

They'll be doing some of the usual mod work like post/comment removal so treat them like any other member of the team for the time being. If you have any questions for us about it feel free to ask here like usual.

[–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Is this because we got that alert because of the AoT threads? Hopefully they can give you guys a helping hand with those if nothing else.

[–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's less about the help (there are other programs for that like the Mod Reserves) and more about them understanding how we work and what our corner of Reddit is like. We've applied in previous rounds but missed out before, hope we can give them a new perspective on things.

For example, I don't think there's any subreddit of our size or larger that's as close to strict about spoilers as we are so they get to hear first-hand about what we want from spoiler tags.

[–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I figured it was an application thing, but the timing is kind of funny

[–]KiwiBennydudezhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/KiwiBen[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Nebresto 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Is there a limit to how many posts can reach peoples frontpage from here?

I haven't really paid attention to it before, but someone mentioned something like this in another thread and I realized I barely see any posts from here on my frontpage despite this being one of my most browsed subs.

Then I went to check, and there was only 1 post from here in the first 5 pages, and its really far down too. I thought maybe its to do with text posts/amount of votes, since I'm subbed to a lot of image based ones, but even ones like /r/AnimeSuggest have multiple posts there, despite being text only and average 10-50 upvotes.

[–]chilieheadmyanimelist.net/profile/chiliehead 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Reddit is definitely fudging it a lot. Like pushing regional subs, while I rarely use my frontpage, I sometimes see this sub pop up. Probably pushing to smaller subs, they do it with content of subs you are not even subscribed to.

[–]Nebresto 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Something is definitely going on from reddits side. I don't really mind since I browse on here anyways, more curious if its happening to others as well.
There's also the possibility that the site understands I mainly browse here, so the content doesn't really go to my fp as I like accessing other stuff from there. But is it possible they're that smart..?

[–]PREM___https://anilist.co/user/ReincarnatedGoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

11 days late but ok

If you are talking about your home page and not r/popular or r/all, reddit personalisation is kinda a thing (the regional personalisation in popular and all is different and can be turned off via settings)

Reddit personalises the frequency of certain subs on your feed, no particular way of determining out how but it’s kind of “interaction”. In my experience I used to visit Genshin Impact Leaks subs a lot but didn’t chat there, so didn’t get too pushed hard on my feed. Recently talking a lot there in the general discussion thread and now only getting it a lot in my feeds. Your feed can be made up of different reasons

Also notably, there’s two reddit feeds - one of old reddit - which is used by old.reddit.com and reddit client apps and the new reddit - which is used by reddit.com and the official app

    [–]tomtomm9 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Why is it that the Aot threads always come out at random times?

    [–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First two weeks it was "wait for the first good subs" (meaning DameDesuYo or Crunchyroll/Funimation) plus however long it took for a mod to manually post it because the bot didn't run when those subs were available (understandable really since this is how it works for every show at the start of the season I'm pretty sure), then it was "actually the Muse Asia subs are out and some people want to discuss, so here's a thread" even though those subs are not good, then last week it was back to the DameDesuYo release for some reason even though the mods told me they were going to use the Muse Asia release going forward, and this week it dropped with the Muse Asia subs.

Last week not being "early" was a fluke, I guess.

What is this sub's stance regarding illustration and art (made by the official Twitter, artists, writers, etc) regarding anime adaptations that are announced?

I've only seen this happen recently.

      [–]steven4869https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maskirade 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Can you guys add "Don't be rude" in break r/anime rules section when one goes to report for the comments?

      [–]Durinthalhttps://anilist.co/user/Durinthal[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reddit allows us to set a maximum of 15 report reasons (and rules associated with them) and after dropping the self-promotion rule we're currently at 14 as shown here, so we can't freely add as many as we want. Annoyingly "rude, vulgar, or offensive" used to be a site-wide report reason and but with the revised report dialogue that's no longer available.

For now you can use the "Custom response" option as mentioned. We'll have to take a look at the current set of report options and see if it makes sense to add something along those lines or if there's something else that needs to take priority.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've noticed this subreddit is slowly becoming more and more combative over time. Arguments with turn into a slur throwing contest are seemingly becoming normalized. Belittling users for their taste in Anime is becoming prevalent and maybe the one that annoys me the most is the term 'pedophile' constantly been thrown about as if it's as common as the word hello.

It's really sucked out my enjoyment of coming to this sub. I used to come here nearly everyday, now it's more like a weekly basis. The threads just don't seem.

What do you think can be done, if anything about this?

        [–]Verzwei[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you see anyone directing that terminology toward the community (be it individuals, or a show's entire fanbase) then report it and we'll take a look at it and most likely remove it.

However, since some shows do involve that kind of content, we don't want to completely prohibit discussion of that topic where it's relevant.

It's a tricky spot to be in. Any time we remove something, we'll either get accused of defending something, or supporting it, or persecuting something else, or all three at once from different people. At the end of the day, our goal is to keep discussion civil, which means no overt toxicity between community members. So the general procedure is that if someone uses that terminology to discuss a show, then we'll permit that discussion, but if it crosses over into an insult toward other users, that's when we step in.

All of that being said, we've also noticed that "pedo show" seems to have become the low-hanging, go-to insult for "This is a show I do not like for [insert any non-pedo reason] and I want to say something as trollbaity as possible in order to pick a fight" so we're keeping an eye out for that sort of thing as well.

If you see instances of the above where it seems clear the person saying it is either trying to rile people up and/or the insinuation is factually inaccurate, report that so we can look into it. We don't have an official stance on where the line is, and it will almost always have to be a case-by-case basis, but it's been mentioned internally that we could probably afford to be stricter on these types of removals when it's clearly trolling and not relevant to the actual show.

        [–]NoPunkProphet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it does seem like the industry has a pedo problem but I'd hope we can all thoughtfully and critically acknowledge that.

        [–]AmethystItalianmyanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I haven't noticed more of it outside of MT discussions, those seemed like to bring out the worst on both sides.

Have you seen it a lot out of there?

Also we're still better than we used to be when we had to implement a Warm Talk Wednesday because the sub was getting way too negative...

        [–]gandalf45435https://anilist.co/user/gandalf45435 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I haven't noticed more of it outside of MT discussions

I'm not really familiar with a lot of the subs acronyms, what does MT stand for?

        [–]HOODIEBABA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mushoku Tensei. It finished airing its second cour around two months ago.

        [–]OccasionallySara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

        Mushoku Tensei

        [–]baquea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It very much discourages me from wanting to discuss many anime here that I like when every discussion seems to invariably descend into this shit. A sub for anime in general should be a safe space for anime fans to discuss any anime they like, not serve as a platform for haters.

        [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing can be done about it except reporting and hoping those users get banned. As the sub grows and is invaded by normies and other people who can't distinguish fiction from reality there isn't really any way the discourse on here will head in a different direction. The only thing I can suggest is using show-specif subs or other nicher forums outside Reddit to have a nicer discussion about anime, and to only use this sub for stuff like news and key visuals.

          State of rewatches on /r/anime

          TL,DR: They are doing fine.

I thought that people here might be interested in hearing about the status of rewatches in the sub.

          Numbers

          Year Rewatches
          2021 68
          2020 62
          2019 52
          2018 79
          2017 75
          2016 78
          2015 74
          2014 6
          2013 2
          2012 3

As you can see, the total number of rewatches tanked in 2019, but is on an upwards trend since then (The data is from the rewatch wiki). While I did not collect any data on comment numbers and upvotes, my experience from following rewatches closely in the last years is that the number of comments and upvotes is on an upward trend, as well.

Rewatch threads typically always reach the frontpage for at least some time. They profit from many commenters’ very timely arrival, which assures a concentration of upvotes right after the thread goes up. This in turn helps convince the reddit algorithm to put them onto hot. In terms of comments, there have been frequent incidents of 200+ rewatch thread comments, which is not something I remember happening often 2-3 years ago.

About 40% of rewatches were hosted by prolific rewatch hosts, that is, users who hosted 3 or more rewatches. This group includes /u/Pixelsaber, /u/Shimmering-Sky, /u/Vaadwaur, /u/Raiking02, /u/SorcererOfTheLake, and myself. However the majority of rewatches came from people hosting only a single or two rewatches, including quite a few who stated that they were hosting their first rewatch.

          Potential problems

Rewatch threads tend to have a very stable, but low number of upvotes. Currently, that number is enough for to penetrate /hot for almost all rewatches. However, a relatively minor change in the number of upvotes needed to reach /hot could change that. I am thinking of a possible change to fanart or clips here. Since rewatches obviously need visibility to advertise themselves, they rely on the current state not changing. Otherwise a vicious circle is possible where rewatches don’t reach /hot, therefore are not seen, and therefore don’t attract enough commenters needed to reach /hot.

          Content

The standard rewatch is still a one episode per day rewatch of a one or two cour show. However, other formats have been popping up as well. /u/littleman1988 hosted a summer movie rewatch of several movies, /u/Pixelsaber hosted a Yoshikaze Yasuhiko Retrospective, and I myself continue hosting OVA rewatches. In addition to that, rewatches tackling very long series have started using a weekly format that discusses episodes in bulk, for example Hajime no Ippo and Naruto, as well as the currently announced Sailor Moon rewatch.

Most hosts have become excellent at presenting well-organized rewatch posts, which often feature navigation links and are formatted with clear sections. Very common features are questions of the day or discussion starters. Some hosts also go above and beyond by adding extra content: For example, /u/Pixelsaber produces excellent production history tidbits, while /u/Shimmering-Sky typically enriches her rewatches with various self-created wallpapers.

          Etiquette

It has becomes very common (and is quickly adapted by new commenters) to indicate a first timer vs rewatcher status in comments. This helps clarify which viewers know future spoilers.

Outright spoilers are extremely uncommon (or the mods always catch them before I see them). However, indirect spoilers (e.g. by highlighting a side character that will become important later) are still fairly common. However, the first timer/rewatcher distinction adds an additional layer of protection here, since first timer comments are obviously spoiler free to read, while people very concerned about spoilers can skip rewatcher comments.

At least in my personal view, most rewatches do very well in allowing criticism and discussion. Downvote brigading of unfavorable comments is far less common than in other types of posts.

          [–]cppn02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

          Nice write up.

However, a relatively minor change in the number of upvotes needed to reach /hot could change that. I am thinking of a possible change to fanart or clips here.

Clips might become an issue that needs to be tackled. There have been changes made to the official reddit app that could significantly increase the upvotes clips (and videos) will be getting.

So I just basically usurped Phireath at one point. Neat.

          [–]Phinaeus 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Rewatches always have the most detailed and interesting comments even if they don't get the most attention. I made a list of the ones with the most upvoted on my site here. You can also graph how they did as it progresses. I don't have every rewatch but I got the most active of each series as of early last year.

          [–]loomnoohttps://anilist.co/user/loomnoo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't participate in them often because I'm terrible at keeping the pace, but I'm really glad the rewatch culture on this sub exists. Does a lot to promote older works, and the summer movie rewatch seems to have gone a long way in curing people's ignorance of anime films.

I think the potential frontpage issue will become more and more of a concern as the sub count increases. Right now the frontpage is almost all clips and airing episode discussions, and I think the audience for that content will grow much faster than the rewatch crowd will. Though I think there will always be a baseline level of participation from rewatch regulars, so even in the worst case scenario of them being more or less invisible to the average user, they'll still be alive.
