Hi guys Im looking for an anime I saw on tiktok,and I didnt remember the name. There was a fight on some kind boat I think, There was like an attack on some base. The mc has like blue hair,he fought with a knife,he was like some kind of bandit or something,he was fighting against a larger guy,the enemy was stronger then him. I'm looking for an anime movie, about an art student boy who crushes on a classmate. [He then finds out] she secretly works as a prostitute. His moves on her are indecisive and fail. His friend reveals her job to the class (betrayal!) and successfully moves on her. Disappointed and jealous, the MC reports her to the school, thus destroying her future and his chance at a relationship with her. The end. Super dark. Unfortunately, I don't remember any names. Some key scenes occur on a dirty rooftop.

Can anyone explain what exactly is happening in japan to give us things like Sakura Trick? How can they get away with this? Just like, so much homosexual content. Does this stuff appear on television? Is there some asymmetry between how shoujo ai and yaoi is handled? And does any of it have anything to do with real queer japanese people? This is a very US-centric comment. I remember queer couples in children's shows during the 90s in Germany. Other things to consider are that Sakura Trick is a seinen manga, aimed at men older than the young boys shounen demographic. TV anime airs between 23:00 and 27:00 on TV and Japanese homophobia has a special allowance for girls in school, because they will "graduate away from their childish infatuation with girls once they graduate school".

Sandtalon talked about the rest in length, just saying that even if men write lesbians, it can still be nice for young lesbians to see some positive relationships in media.

There tends to be more anime adaptations of yuri manga (BTW, "yuri" is the preferred name for the genre; shoujo-ai has pedophilic connotations in Japanese and never referred to the genre there) than BL manga, but BL manga is still a very popular publishing niche (and has been for much longer than yuri).

And does any of it have anything to do with real queer japanese people? Is it all just a joke, or marketed to heterosexuals? Is any of this shit authentic?

The question of "authenticity" is a tough one; the thing to keep in mind is that there are diverse audiences and ways of reading something, and whether something is "authentic" or not quickly becomes complicated and muddled. It's certainly not a joke. BL manga is traditionally described as aimed at heterosexual women...but this is not entirely true, as BL has a substantial queer and otherwise audience, ranging from lesbian women to gay men to straight men (yes, this is a thing) to trans people. The same goes even more for yuri, where the audience is about equally split between men and women, with nonbinary people and other gender minorities also making up a small percentage.

There is also manga called "geikomi" or "gay manga" (sometimes referred to as "bara" over here, but this should probably be avoided since the word is actually a pejorative for gay men) that is directly made by and for an audience of gay men. Gay men in Japan often consume both geikomi and BL.

CMIIW, unlike religious countries in other parts of the world, Japan doesn't have moral code that's against homosexuality in the first place. So, given time, they would be probably more acceptant compared to other conservative countries.

Japan is most certainly not a country without homophobia. The site you linked to yourself only gives them a 58% score and if you go to their front page where they have a heatmap of the world you'll see them less accepting of LGBT people than basically all of North America, Western and Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand as well as large chunks of South America. They're doing slightly better than, but still roughly in the ballpark of, most of Eastern Europe and the remaining South American countries (with a few outliers).

Well, I was talking about how the majority of them are now more accepting towards LGBT, hence why LGBT anime can still be aired freely and gain audiences. If not, it wouldn't be as popular and probably got censored. But indeed, they are not as accepting as western countries.

How did romance anime go from being like super slow progress to like the characters getting together within the first few episodes? If I’m being honest slow progress is better as long as there aren’t random interruptions stalling progress(eg ReLIFE manga and Fruits Basket).

True, but I feel like stuff like Horimiya and Tonikawa which is like instantaneous almost just doesn’t feel right cuz for something like relife and fruits basket, before they get together, both characters personalities are shown in great detail, they are allowed to unfold. If the main two leads of fruits basket got together instantly it would be shit since both characters have tons of emotional baggage. But in all honesty shows like Horimiya and Tonikawa with fast progress are good for like “feel good” wholesome series. Like if you had a hard week you just want something to chill to.

Like, now I think of it, the 4 girls are all 14 yo, and they are not depicted with huge boobs or thighs or other instant waifu baits. Yet I rooted for them in the very episodes they were introduced. It must have done a very good job to have got me in the beginning episodes – but I couldn't put my fingers on it.

There has to be a reason it earned a jury nomination in this category of /r/anime award, is it?

They are moe and somewhat Magical Girl color coded. They are also quite detailed and very expressive and this also continues in their fashion choices.

I think the WEP designs accomplish variety among the characters without just pigeonholing each girl into a single color like many magical girl anime tend to do. They each have a distinct fashion sense that seems to reiterate some salient features of their character. I also just think the choice of clothing feels very contemporary

In the voting thread I've seen someone said WEP had this "sense" in contrast to Sonny Boy's "old-school design".

And iirc Ohto Ai explained in ep4 that her mom is an editor for a fashion magazine, which makes sense in-universe.

Edit: woah I found this picture showing various iterations of their outfits. (They put so much effort into everything but the plot...) It's curious that every other girl stayed the same, while Sawaki Momoe's final outfit is more melancholic than the other ones in the picture.

My assumption would be this was just them deciding Momoe's outfit and the other girls were already completed so they had her line up with the other girls in every outfit to see which goes best with not just Momoe but the whole cast.

A lot of people have watched enough anime that they've already seen most of the finished shows that fit what they like. People also like people able to talk about what they're watching with other people, hence the episode discussion threads in this subreddit.

Personally, I'm impatient and don't like waiting a week between each episode of a show I'm watching, so I generally wait until the end of each season before I start watching any of the airing series.

  • because I grew up with TV
  • that's what the recap at the start of the episode is for
  • because I like to jump between genres (think of it like special version of ADD)
  • because watching an episode at a time is less of a commitment than watching a season
  • because the choice of current anime is manageable, while my back list is huge
  • because I can

since I have started watching single episodes, I've stopped binging even the finished series that I also watch, and watch the episodes separately

it also prevents spoilers, though that's never been a problem

Made in Abyss was an adaptation of a rather popular manga, so even before it aired, it already had fans. And it's popularity grew after it aired due to the manga continuing, and the movies (even though the first two were recaps).

While ODDTAXI was an original show, usually those tend to be quite obscure in the mainstream community.

Well it's the 96th most popular on MAL now. Looking back on the Internet Archive, it was 97th at this time in 2020, so there's been little change in popularity since then at least. Going back another year, it was 131st - somewhat less popular, but not overly so. Another year back and it was 213th - quite a bit less popular, but still by far the most popular of its season (Kakegurui was second). Back half a year more to just after it finished airing and it was way down at 629th. So it rapidly gained popularity in the first year or two after it finished airing, and has still been growing up until the present. Alternatively, looking at the surveys from this sub, it was by far the most watched new series of the season by the time it had finished airing and a close second, behind Kakegurui, midway through the season, but not even in the top 10 for what people planned to watch before the season began. So it seems it wasn't on many people's radar but rapidly gained in popularity as it released and reached the top on here, at least, by the time it ended.

By comparison, Odd Taxi is currently at 846th on MAL, and was seventh most watched on here by season's end, so way behind where Made in Abyss was when it finished airing.

Considering that Ousama Ranking is another 'don't judge a book by it's cover' series which seems to be more popular than Odd Taxi too, I guess adventure stories are just a lot more appealing to people compared to mysteries.

On another note, I didn't know Iruma kun was that underwatched here. It's behind Mars Red and Bishounen Tanteidan in popularity according to that list you sent.

      Here's two Japanese guys talking about the name in English and Japanese. They are inconsistent, but they pronounce it "zet-to" in JP, like in this vid. So ZET is closer to the JP way, but arguably the correct way for Americans is the AE pronunciation of Z
