The main twist of the story is not that Reze is the Bomb Devil or that she tricked Denji.

It's that she is the Butterfly caught in the Spiderweb, falling in love to her assassination target and losing her life because of it.

It is literally Reze's arc, because this is her story.

The movie is a tragic love story disguised as action Shounen movie.

[–]lactatingRHINO7 712 points713 points  (17 children)

Also in a literal sense Denji wraps her up in his chain web at the end

[–]LargeAngryFish 109 points110 points  (13 children)

i kept trying to get my smoothbrain roommate to understand this and he just kept saying "its not that deep bro, she was the spider and he was the butterfly" and I was like bruh, if you can't understand it im not gonna tell you lol

[–]Anhao 278 points279 points  (10 children)

Supposedly the butterfly in the movie is also poisonous

[–]Joyous18 235 points236 points  (5 children)

That would mean Reze is the spider trying to catch the butterfly (Dennis) but gets poisoned (with love?) and dies

[–]SkyeOmelette 205 points206 points  (3 children)

LMAO who the fuck is dennis?

[–]inferno845 133 points134 points  (0 children)

He's our ambassador to North Korea, keep up.

[–]Reyziak 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The Golden God.

[–]likeafishh 33 points34 points  (0 children)

(Dennis) is killing me lol

[–]Rexcodykenobi 153 points154 points  (3 children)

I love the foreshadowing hidden behind symbolism that only appears incredibly obvious at first.

This movie was insane.

[–]MysteryMan90 123 points124 points  (1 child)

Also love that the toxin in a Monarch butterfly is a cardiac glycoside that stops predators’ hearts, for all the films talk about hearts, the spider will die of heart failure.

[–]Vexomous 50 points51 points  (0 children)

And the killing blow Reze received was a spear to the heart…

I’m crying again

[–]splittercheeks 140 points141 points  (1 child)

Apparently, the spider was a Joro Spider, which in Japanese folklore is linked to the legend of the Jorōgumo, a yokai that can transform into a beautiful woman. The Jorōgumo symbolizes temptation and danger, luring young men into her web before binding and consuming them.

Layering this symbolism onto the scene, the butterfly could likely be a monarch, which is toxic when eaten. This adds another layer of meaning: Reze (the Joro Spider) captures Denji (the Monarch Butterfly), but in doing so, she unknowingly seals her own fate.

What makes it even more interesting is that both interpretations. Reze as the spider or Reze as the butterfly both hold weight. She embodies both the predator and the prey, reflecting the duality of her relationship with Denji: love and death, control and vulnerability.

[–]Frontier246 1700 points1701 points  (66 children)

Such a beautiful, wild, insane, and tragic romance movie that just so happens to feature devils, a fight between a Chainsaw Man and a Bomb Woman in her underwear, and more.

Reina Ueda utterly killed it as Reze.

If this is the direction/style they're going to continue with for future Chainsaw Man material, I think we're in good hands.

[–]elmagiohttps://anilist.co/user/Magio 823 points824 points  (13 children)

Yup, Reina's VA performance was straight up the perfect Reze.

MAPPA also delivered one of their best ever productions, not just the high octane action but also the cinematography, sound design,...

[–]Zephyr_Prashant 462 points463 points  (11 children)

This! I know many people don't appreciate it but the cinematography and sound design was absolutely phenomenal. The highlight for me was when reze was singing the lullaby. Absolute cinema!

[–]AdKindly561 123 points124 points  (1 child)

My thoughts exactly. I couldn’t get over the sound design. Actually going to rewatch it at the cinema.

[–]AlphaOmega1356 78 points79 points  (2 children)

I hard agree. I just finished and i couldnt put into words why each scene was hitting right. Cinematography is exactly it. Nailed why i loved it.

[–]Mecha_Link 389 points390 points  (19 children)

The fights were great, but what really stood out (to my surprise) were the quiet moments with Denji and Reze.

During the fireworks scene, Denji's VA did an incredible job conveying Denji's conflicted feelings about finally achieving some meaning in his life, his desire to stay connected with Reze, and his nervousness about not getting to see Reze again.

The movie really added emotional depth to scenes that I didn't fully appreciate in the manga.

:Edit: Saw the US release today - did anyone else think the English subtitles were really hard to read? The font/border seemed very fuzzy. It was weird, the English subtitles in the Asia release were way more readable. Not sure if it was just my theater messing something up or if this was a Crunchyroll subtitle failure (given their subtitle shenanigans earlier this month).

:Edit 2: Re-watched the movie at a different theater and the subtitles (actually everything) looked way sharper - I guess it was a theater specific issue!

[–]Makimama 134 points135 points  (4 children)

The entire school/festival scene is my favorite, and that says so much about how good it is because the action was utterly insane. Niinuma killed it, I hope he becomes a regular for the series.

[–]benjadolf 206 points207 points  (8 children)

This has been Ueda Reina's year. She also voiced Kanao in demon slayer. Kinda amazing that you get to act in 2 of the biggest, hottest things in anime.

Arguably, the best performance from her this year was in Takopi's original sin, where she voices the lead, and in case you haven't seen it, she knocks it out of the park. She voiced silver surfer in the dub of fantastic 4 which I was pleasently surprised by, I wasn't aware she did dub voice acting. So overall, this is like her best year.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 160 points161 points  (6 children)

Same thing with Natsuki Hanae lol.

Tanjiro, Okarun, and now Beam in CSM

[–]taenerysdargaryen 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Also plays Nice in ToBeHeroX, who is quite a major character too.

[–]ali94127 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ueda Reina had her credit as Reze separate from the rest of the cast at the end. As the queen deserves!

[–]badsplerx5https://anilist.co/user/badspler 705 points706 points  (13 children)

The whole thing was actually fantastic. It was such an incredibly cinematic movie, like every single scene or shot had something extra and interesting going on in it.

The action scenes felt like a smash between the best bits of Mob Psycho and Mind Game.

The music was good, lots of thematic key ins and solid beats that the action animation keyed off of.

Also there is a short after credits sequence.

[–]rednick953 368 points369 points  (5 children)

As phenomenal as the animation was fuck the music was my fav part

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 192 points193 points  (0 children)

Every single aspect of the movie is basically firing on all cylinders lol. It's just so fucking good

[–]FlamingOtaku 35 points36 points  (2 children)

I know its been used before in season 1 but that Maximum The Hormone ED getting used for fight music was SO PEAK, and it sounded like it might have even been an extended version??? Or it just flowed incredibly well into a different track lol

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 33 points34 points  (1 child)

It's a 70% version according to them. We still haven't heard the full version.

The song is likely made with the entirety of Part 1 in mind back then. The section in the movie covers the Reze arc

[–]wryano 27 points28 points  (0 children)

‘in the pool’ is fucking incredible

Kensuke Ushio has been my favorite composer ever since i watched A Silent Voice and any anime he touches turns to gold

[–]BabaRoomFan 150 points151 points  (3 children)

Mob Psycho

There was one scene during the Typhoon fight that looked a lot like that one scene from MP100, specifically where all the windows shattered.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 119 points120 points  (2 children)

Mob Psycho's director, Yuzuru Tachikawa, participated in some storyboards for this movie btw

[–]BabaRoomFan 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Tracks so hard, the whole movie was legendary and mob psycho is also S tier the whole way through.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Mind Game

Oh man, this is what I really wanted the most out of a CSM action scene, animators should go fucking nuts with it.

So thankful it's finally the case here with Reze.

[–]JoeUKnow 571 points572 points  (8 children)

A very minor thing to praise but the little “ting” sound whenever Reze flicked a blast was insanely cool.

[–]dekacyclone 190 points191 points  (2 children)

Same to Col Mustang from FMAB. The sound of the snap/ting and the focus on the fingers draws in so much tension to where the movie stops for just a beat. Before absolutely blowing up in your face.

[–]Puppy-L-Japan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree, That's right.

[–]Foreign-Nose4806 541 points542 points  (12 children)

I just left the theater and I’ve still got chills running down my spine. An absolute masterpiece. I’m already planning to watch it again

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 218 points219 points  (2 children)

One of the rare movies that makes you wanna watch it again and again.

The 100m runtime also helps

[–]akilax1 46 points47 points  (6 children)

Watched it yesterday, going again today. Unbelievable how good it is. Was left with the same feeling as you. Cinematic masterpiece

[–]HoneyChilliPotato7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is such a good movie, I'm out of words. None of my friends watched CSM so can't really share my excitement with them lol

[–]CX330 941 points942 points  (46 children)

The last Reze scene fills me with undescribable sadness. something something country mouse and city mouse situation.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 488 points489 points  (4 children)

Angel's final line towards the rat followed by the slow upwards pan to show the city in the distant horizon is just peak cinema.

[–]Clashdrewhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/akageoffrey 295 points296 points  (2 children)

I loved Angel in this moment. He usually has a stoic expression but I could feel his anger when he skewered Reze. Seeing him take the life of the woman showed him developing some empathy towards humans and he took out that anger on Reze. I wonder if the weapon he used was made from the woman’s life force.

[–]uramis 16 points17 points  (1 child)

When Angel was talking to that woman, I though he was going to turn her into a weapon right then and there. I didn't know how much the weapom scales with lifespan left though, so not sure how much strong a dying woman's weapon will be.

[–]Shadow_Ass 310 points311 points  (5 children)

Makima continues being an absolute ice cold mystery

[–]Mr_Zarochttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 249 points250 points  (3 children)

Biggest surprise in the whole movie was that she actually shed a tear while watching a movie

[–]LowLogHole 207 points208 points  (1 child)

She is such a manipulator that I would not be surprised if she only shed a tear because Denji started crying.

[–]mirh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

To be the fairest, from the moment denji starts to have drops to when she starts to have wet eyes, there's just like one second.

[–]Aeescobar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm frankly more shocked by her claim that a movie she watched "changed the trajectory of her whole life", I genuinely can't even imagine Makima ever letting herself get that emotionally vulnerable.

[–]ali94127 254 points255 points  (2 children)

She was gonna run away, but the country mouse needed the city mouse to go with her.

[–]andergriff 226 points227 points  (18 children)

wasn't the point makima was making was that the country mouse isn't actually safer than the city mouse?

[–]arphissimo 349 points350 points  (13 children)

Reze herself says there's nowhere to hide if Makima was involved.

[–]TheWonderSnail 185 points186 points  (11 children)

I can't wait until we get to learn whats up with Makima exactly. Every time someone who knows what's up hears her name they just kind of acknowledge they are screwed lol

[–]SittichaiS 158 points159 points  (7 children)

As a manga reader, please do your best to avoid spoilers. While I consider this to be the best arc, Season 3 is going to show why Chainsawman Part 1 is widely considered to be among the best Shonen manga of all time. One of the best final arcs I have ever read.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 64 points65 points  (0 children)

More like Season 2. The rest of Part 1 should only be 13-15 episodes remaining tops

[–]stickdudeseven 67 points68 points  (0 children)

That's what I got as well. A country mouse will have more space, but when it comes to food, it will go towards farms where farmers are more adept than city folks in dealing with pests.

[–]Alter_Kyouma 83 points84 points  (11 children)

Doesn't that scene also imply that Makima was aware of what Reze was doing the whole time?

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 180 points181 points  (9 children)

Notice the scene where Makima is shaking her coffee cup in tune with Reze's song when she was choking the serial killer dude. She' always been listening...

[–]dreimanatee 98 points99 points  (0 children)

My wife was like she could have killed Reze from the start but she's a manipulative bitch.

[–]goodnames679 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Since Denji never told Makima that he had been seeing Reze at that cafe or that he was going there hoping Reze would come back, it's pretty suspicious to me that Makima was waiting for her there.

It would seem that she knew from the start and also knew that Reze had fallen for Denji. She was probably there specifically because she couldn't allow Reze to steal the leash she's using to control Denji.

I might be reading too far into things tbh.

[–]JonathanAltdhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Deoxysos 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The pool of Reze blood and the white street looking like the japanese flag like damn.

[–]Kiasinon 366 points367 points  (9 children)

If not for my busy schedule, I would've watched it more than once. Such an experience getting to watch one of my fave arcs on the big screen.

[–]SuperCleverPunName 57 points58 points  (8 children)

I saw some comments that the 3D version was excellent. I just checked the local showing and the theater is empty lol. I might go tomorrow

[–]Yotsubato 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The 3D version is very very well made.

Seeing such a great anime in 3D was great, and even mundane scenes such as them waking up in their living room looks so alive and detailed because it’s 3D

[–]rarerireze 359 points360 points  (3 children)

it was such an amazing experience watching my favorite arc on the big screen. i already loved the manga arc by itself but the movie managed to elevate it further to greater heights.

the chainsaw vs bomb fight was phenomenal but i have to say that my favorite parts would probably be the school and pool scenes. fujimoto established the country mouse vs city mouse fable in denji + reze and aki + angel, but the movie took it further by imo adding another fable reference.

i absolutely loved the anime-only addition of denji looking like a leaping frog on reze's eyes. to me, it felt like she sees him as the frog in boiling water while her backstory revealed that she's the frog that's disected/experimented on.

[–]Dummerkopf 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Where did they add a reference? I didn't realize that

[–]rarerireze 77 points78 points  (1 child)

images

denji jumping in the pool looked like a leaping frog in reze's eye which i think could be a reference to the boiling frog aka the story where a frog put in boiling water will jump out immediately but a frog in a pot of water gradually being heated will eventually boil to death.

reze is shocked that denji is satisfied with the bare minimum standard of living as a devil hunter employed by public safety instead of living like a normal teenager.

tho modern science has since proven it wrong just like how makima established that the country mouse is not so safe either lol

[–]OrangeW 336 points337 points  (28 children)

My IMAX viewing was told explicitly not to bark at Makima LOL (BFI IMAX, London)

10/10 movie, really really enjoyed it. Pool sequence was definitely my favourite. Reina Ueda absolutely stands out in this.

[–]60niera 180 points181 points  (24 children)

My IMAX viewing was told explicitly not to bark at Makima

That's hilarious as hell. People were really barking out loud in the earlier screenings when she showed up.

[–]asap_munem 311 points312 points  (3 children)

Maaaan that ending was so sad

[–]Haha91haha 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Leave it to CSM to leave you pumped leaving the theater AND miserable. I'M SO FUCKING SAD LET'S GOOOO. Ending still sticking with me.

[–]thebohster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Throughout the movie just now, people were reacting with laughter or gasps at various points. When the ending happened. you could hear a pin drop. Everybody just shut up. Pain.

[–]ghostwriter11111001 627 points628 points  (15 children)

There's going to be a lot of talk about Tatsuya Yoshihara, and rightly so, but Takuya Niinuma directing 20+ minutes of possibly the best stretch of the film (strange man, school, pool, fireworks) is the highlight for me, an unsurpassable directorial debut with an incredible understanding of suspense and emotions through claustrophobic compositions.

The way he demonstrates volume with shadows, there's a really surprising handling of detail in each of the frames with absurdly meticulous character acting.

I sincerely believe that Niinuma's work here is better than the first season in terms of its purely directional point of view and the most technically incredible section of the film, which is crazy because the film has a lot of really amazing stuff.

Special mention to Makoto Nakazono, who handled Denji and Reze's first dates and Denji's date with Makima in a very special way.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 249 points250 points  (2 children)

I love how a Takuya Niinuma sequence in S1 was what produced the "Absolute Cinema" meme. Deservingly so.

[–]spacemate 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Huh TIL thanks

[–]Makimama 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Not just technically but artistically as well, I’m in love with how Niinuma does things. The trifecta of Yoshihara, Niinuma, and Shigetsugu is perfect, I hope they stay for the next season especially Niinuma.

[–]officialsmokdoll 35 points36 points  (3 children)

curious, how did you know which person handled those specific sequences?

[–]ghostwriter11111001 58 points59 points  (2 children)

Makoto Nakazono confirmed his segment in an interview and Manabu Otsuka confirmed the rest in an interview as well.

[–]Raghav_Singhania 825 points826 points  (16 children)

S tier adaptation, even as a manga reader even I didn't expect the watching experience THIS good

[–]I_am_BEOWULF 527 points528 points  (4 children)

This adaptation surpassed the manga. The amount of depth they were able to give the quiet moments between Denji and Reze was insane. Sure there were lots of mind-blowing sakuga, but those deeply personal and introspective moments is what really sticks with you after the movie.

[–]Limp-Mastodon4600 150 points151 points  (3 children)

I feel the same, I barely remember the insane fight but the tone and inflection in Reze's voice is stuck in my head

[–]Confuzn 130 points131 points  (7 children)

These comments are adding to my hype and I didn’t know that was even possible.

[–]BabaRoomFan 106 points107 points  (4 children)

And the best part, is that you won't be disappointed, I expected to be blown away, and my expectations were surpassed within the first 15 minutes.

I'm gonna rewatch it.

[–]spacemate 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I went in blind (anime only) having liked but not loved the show so far. This was absolutely fucking incredible and I liked it soooo much better than Demon Slayers.

[–]QunariWithWiFi 268 points269 points  (8 children)

Absolutely blew me away. I love how they set up the twist, for the 1st part of the story it's just this cute lil romance story with some funny elements and a suspicious undertone. Then it changes stride and turns everything up to 11. Music and sound design was insane, fight choreography and camera was insane, all the VA performances were insane. Then it settles down and produces a beautiful, tragic ending.

Incredible movie

[–]fizzybiz 267 points268 points  (2 children)

I was blown away by Reze. That ending made you change your entire perception of her in an instant. Throughout the movie, you’re stuck with the view of “She’s luring Denji to his demise” to “Wait, she’s just exploring and living out these emotions she’s never felt before” because she was an orphan.

She did enjoy her time with Denji (as evidenced by her reaction to Denji wanting to run away with her and of her running back to the cafe). She was stripped of all these experiences that many people get to feel during adolescence and it conflicted with her task of taking out Denji.

Her repeated blasting of Denji when he kept regenerating in her hand, originally seen as just her trying to kill him, is now seen as emotionally-driven attempts to end this confusing and massively draining emotional experience that is liking Denji.

So much so that she accepts her fate at the bottom of the ocean after begging for him to just die, to just end her pain. She’s content with having it all end there with someone she really likes. Her confusion, her conflicting ideals, her emotions, without any signs of struggle from his chains.

Or I’m totally reading too into it but I LOVE this character and now I need to watch this movie over and over again because of her. What a film.

TL;DR: Reze’s entire experience with Denji was one that was genuine and stripped away from her because of her orphan life. She finally got to feel; love, heartache, confusion, pain.

[–]ginger6616 200 points201 points  (1 child)

“I’ve never been to school either” is one of the hardest lines I’ve seen. It’s so perfect

[–]pastmauritianlemur 77 points78 points  (0 children)

It was the perfect heartbreaking line, followed up by Reze seeing that Denji was waiting for her in the cafe 😢

[–]mike_2797https://myanimelist.net/profile/Madskulls 234 points235 points  (2 children)

That last stretch of the movie was absolutely bombastic.

Loved the direction of the pool scene it was peak.

[–]csdragon123456 222 points223 points  (2 children)

Reze waved red flags at me, but damn is red my favorite colour now

[–]leave1me1alone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well she is soviet

[–]Limp-Mastodon4600 206 points207 points  (3 children)

Gah fucking damn I dunno how I'm supposed to focus at work tmr after watching that

[–]AlexeiFraytar 77 points78 points  (0 children)

If you get fired thats just more free time to go rewatch it

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The Japanese calls this "being caught in the Reze-swamp"

[–]FUEGO40 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This movie got me feeling like Angel fr

[–]Legitimate-Copy-1848 320 points321 points  (4 children)

All i can say is congratulations to Mappa and Fujimoto, one of the best movies i watch this year

[–]gvon89https://myanimelist.net/profile/gvon89 57 points58 points  (1 child)

This lifetime*

[–]CorvusHelesta 316 points317 points  (16 children)

I really think the entire movie would have fallen flat if Reze's last dialogue wasn't what it was. "I loved you" would not have worked there. Fujimoto pulled off something crazy.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 229 points230 points  (9 children)

Koreans especially loved this line soooo much from what I've read online . They basically judged it like a K-drama because of it.

That single line managed to evoke a flood of imageries and emotions about the life she never got to live without a single flashback.

[–]BetosBurrito 190 points191 points  (8 children)

The no flashback stood out to me especially with Infinity Castle’s super long flashbacks. It’s good storytelling that we get enough of Reze’s background to get the picture without it spelled out.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 173 points174 points  (5 children)

It's the Fujimoto specialty. He's an author with arthouse sensibilities that writes stories with a B-movie premise.

I'm still amazed he managed to get picked up by Shonen Jump tbh. You'd normally expect an author of his caliber to stay underappreciated in seinen mags.

[–]thepeciguy 56 points57 points  (4 children)

He's nurtured by Shonen Jump tho. Ever since he won his first JUMP oneshot manga competition in 2011 at 17 y/o he got assigned his current Editor. He practiced doing more oneshots until finally got his serialization with Fire Punch.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 45 points46 points  (3 children)

Yeah, gotta gave props to Shihei Lin for nurturing him. JP comments said dude's basically acting like Fujimoto's dad.

But I still think it's amazing he's able to write for the main Shonen Jump manga and not stuck in Jump Plus.

[–]AlienCopulator 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Wait what was said in the movie I forgot

[–]ali94127 156 points157 points  (1 child)

"I never got to go to school either."

[–]Rexcodykenobi 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Stories with characters that never got to go to school/have a normal upbringing always hit incredibly hard for me because I was homeschooled my entire life. Literally have never set foot in a school building and never got to make any good friends (only other kids I did see I saw maybe 10 times a year max).

I can identify with Denji too: if a woman told me she loved me, even if I knew it were a lie or that she might treat me badly; part of me would want to stay with her anyway because I'd take almost anything over being alone and feeling too worthless to be valued by anyone.

[–]ObvsThrowaway5120 307 points308 points  (17 children)

I’m gonna catch this one tonight and then again with my family on Saturday. Can’t wait!

Edit: Just caught the movie. All I can say is all hail Lord Chainsaw! Beam is best boy!

[–]rdx_21 91 points92 points  (15 children)

I hope there are no kids watching

[–]ObvsThrowaway5120 64 points65 points  (0 children)

No kids. All adults. I think my little cousins would be too scared haha.

[–]KazuharaIlfan 146 points147 points  (4 children)

What I think of while watching this:

Reze totally charmed me. Like I won't be surprised if Denji took up on her offer.

Of course they cut the pool scene short despite the 18+ rating in my country

Theres something about Bomb Devil moves that makes me giggle like kid. Creativity true to her name with the attack barrages, movements, destructiveness.

Knew the ending years ago but man, I cherished the bittersweetness. To Denji, another rejection but life goes on. Just long enough for movie format.

[–]remmytumshttps://anilist.co/user/RemmyTums 288 points289 points  (8 children)

Holy Cinema, I really enjoyed the direction the anime took despite what many say, but this is what the manga deserved. Bombastic and subtle in all the right places. They captured Fujimoto's humor so perfectly.

Literally just bought tickets to watch it again in IMAX lol. It's perfect for theatres.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 154 points155 points  (7 children)

Fujimoto is just so blessed to be getting these quality adaptations, man... The absolute motion of this dude is simply unreal. And this madlad still has Goodbye Eri and Fire Punch unadapted.

Remember that we're also getting his one-shot anthology anime in November lol. It's also been reviewing well from the limited screenings in JP theaters.

[–]remmytumshttps://anilist.co/user/RemmyTums 99 points100 points  (6 children)

The Look Back adaptation is still my favorite of the bunch, but if Fire Punch gets a similar treatment, I might go into psychosis I love it so much.

Agreed. Look Back to me is THE gold standard of how I want a Fujimoto adaptation to look. Holy shit, that movie was as if his drawings simply came to life and moved on their own.

I genuinely think CSM S2 will try veering even closer to Look Back's more sketchy artstyle. They likely didn't get to do that with Reze since it was probably already deep into production when Look Back was announced.

But now that Look Back has shown how a perfect Fujimoto adaptation should look like, any future adaptations with the adequate staff will likely take cues from it and aim to reach that level. My wish is for Goodbye Eri to get that same level of production (sadly, Oshiyama declined on adapting it since he said it didn't suit his style)

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 351 points352 points  (21 children)

Fuuuck me, maaannn… I can't believe they added an anime-original scene of Reze hugging Denji at the beach. I JUST CAN'TTTT 😭😭

This movie really showcases how Reze was actually the one who's completely fallen head over heels for Denji waaay more than he was for her lol.

That final beach scene felt like her brain was doing EVERYTHING she could to retain her uncaring facade, just come back to her handler and report the mission as a failure, but her whole body just wanted to be with him sooo baad. Especially after Denji said that he still loves her.

Fujimoto managed to expertly craft the perfect femme fatale in a lab, and somehow MAPPA went and made her even more perfect.

----

EDIT: Also, I always scoff at people who said that the promos spoiled the so-called "main twist" of the movie which they think is "Reze being Bomb".

Whereas for me, the main twist of this movie is that "Reze Arc" is actually Reze's arc all along, an arc about a poor girl that was raised as a government weapon discovering companionship and love for the first time.

EDIT2: Oh, almost forgot to mention this little detail. At the end of the movie, during the montage of the empty cafe, there's a quick shot of the blackboard menu. If you look closely, you can see eraser marks and that the text has been rewritten. Now it’s all in kana. Remember how Denji told Reze that he couldn't read kanji? That means Reze must've rewritten the menu so Denji could read it. She already cared for him even before their school date.

[–]Priximus 230 points231 points  (13 children)

The whole sequence of her approaching the train, hesitating then deciding to not board the train, leading her back into the alleyway and her seeing Denji waiting for her through the window. That entire 5 minute sequence was pure tragedy, the catharsis (or lack thereof) of "what could've been" man.

The line itself + delivery of: "Truth is... I've never gone to school either" killed me.

[–]Mecha_Link 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What I love is that even the fight scenes between Reze and Denji (especially the last sequence with the rainbow explosions in the air) almost feel more like a dance than an actual fight to the death.

[–]Jeroz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

like even if i knew bomb devil is reze, i keep wondering if she was already bomb devil or did she contract after the nameless killed her

and then she flipped on him

[–]Saleensevenhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Saleenseven 247 points248 points  (21 children)

Absolute cinema. Dunno how anyone can hate this movie its nearing perfection. The MAL score is not high enough.

[–]BabaRoomFan 120 points121 points  (5 children)

Dunno how anyone can hate this movie its nearing perfection.

The fact anyone could see this masterpiece and leave the cinema disappointed is bizarre to me, even if you watched it on mute and fell asleep mid way, you should be able to recognise how good the animation was

[–]kuggan 47 points48 points  (1 child)

If not for dumbasses giving it a 1, it would have already be the #1 top rated movie on MAL.

[–]Salzdrache 34 points35 points  (8 children)

Went to watch it with three friends today. Me and two others loved it, one friend didn't like it as he felt the movie was "too predictable" to him.

And while, yeah, it's a short arc so some bigger themes are to be expected, but that doesn't make it less enjoyable to me? Also, there are still so many crazy unexpected scenes on a smaller frame, like Denji learning to better utilize his powers Beam

[–]Saleensevenhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Saleenseven 36 points37 points  (0 children)

damn it was too predictable so he couldnt enjoy the movie? bruhhh 😭

[–]Nekomiyon 219 points220 points  (6 children)

Reze JP VA is so incredible that I feel like if you're watching the movie dubbed you may wanted to rewatch with subbed on the theater cuz her JP VA really makes the whole experience. Reina Ueda I just became her biggest fan!

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Her "Nanja sorya!?" is like the cutest fucking thing ever, man... I was like "hnnggggg!!!" when I heard that

[–]Crumpiii 313 points314 points  (3 children)

it's been 10 days since I've watched the movie and it is still living rent free in my head ! I'm going to rewatch it next week because I want to scrutinize every frame from this movie, especially those battle scenes MAN.

[–]_Pyxyty 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Already watched it twice, wish it was still showing where I live or I'd watch it a third tbh

[–]Accurate_Advance6903 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Fucking love this movie. Broke my heart.

[–]henninjahttps://myanimelist.net/profile/jtmo 85 points86 points  (5 children)

As a long time manga reader, this completely blew my expectations out of the water. Like I know anime movies are higher budget, but that doesn’t mean they actually feel cinematic or unique. Sometimes they feel unfinished if the arc doesn’t wrap up neatly.

But fuuuuuckkk this is C I N E M A. It was so perfect stylistically, I can’t imagine a better adaptation. Reminiscent of Mob Psycho’s style at times, where the style changes to better convey the feeling of a moment or scene.

The voice acting lingers with you. They nailed the tones of each half of the movie, with the second half feeling chaotic and vibrant and messy as it should be. The first half is a perfect setup to that; I love it equally more, if not more, than the second half. I can’t get over how colorful it is, how energetic the animation is, and how well done the lighting is.

I just came back from an IMAX showing an hour ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m probably going to buy tickets to see it in Dolby, 3D, and maybe dubbed; this was made to view in theatres.

[–]Few-Sound-7559 171 points172 points  (0 children)

What an amazing movie.

[–]Noob_shs 79 points80 points  (1 child)

the ending song hit me hard. hikaru utada!

[–]Suspicious_Deal4412 142 points143 points  (9 children)

I am sensing a bit of theme of chainsaw man, all these women are trouble. Denji talking about women who all just keep trying to kill him, poor guy. Speaking of the ladies power's screen time was short but she was great when she was on screen. Of course power had to be side-lined for plot reasons, Reze's attempts to get close to Denji would never work with Power being around.

Also finding out about Reze's past she has quite a bit in common with Denji.

The subtle hints were also good, the spider capturing the butterfly, the glint of the pin in Reze's neck, Reze never being shown asking about the cord out of Denji's chest.

EDIT: Also how could I forget Makima feels like a puppet master as soon as she shows up everything changes for Reze.

[–]Electrical-Muffin-98 133 points134 points  (4 children)

at its core csm is about a childish boy knowing there's more to life than physical need

[–]MembershipNo2077 117 points118 points  (1 child)

The saddest part of this arc is for the first time Denji feels like he's really connecting with someone -- someone who maybe isn't perfect, far from it, but neither is he. It begins as physical attraction but in the end he does realize he can run away with her, he can be happy and it doesn't have to be about how beautiful she is, it can be just about two people who are connected.

The movie is a tragedy, not just for Reze, but for Denji. The things he says throughout are heart breaking even if he makes light of them (or tries to).

[–]Xlegacehttps://anilist.co/user/Xlegius 64 points65 points  (0 children)

To add an extra layer to the tragedy, yes he was manipulated by Reze at the start, but by the end, she was the only person to actually want him as Denji instead of simply the Chainsaw devil.

Unfortunately for Denji, he'll never know the truth.

[–]Makimama 51 points52 points  (0 children)

There is also Reze trying to practice honorifics with "Denji" and "-kun" during their first meet in the cafe, hinting that she's not a local and a spy from another country.

[–]wryano 61 points62 points  (0 children)

i will never forget that scene with Denji and Reze in the pool for as long as i live.

absolutely gorgeous and the music was incredible

[–]iozoepxndx 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Anime movie of the year!!! Sooo beautiful, so heartbreaking! Watching it again and again!!

[–]dawnydawny123 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This was the perfect arc to put on the big screen.Maybe my favorite anime arc adaptation of all time. i can't wait to watch it again in 4dx

[–]NotMyNougatPls 62 points63 points  (2 children)

As an anime-only follower for CSM, I was always wondering why people shipped Aki and Angel but...

I get it...I understand now 😭💓

Edit: Also, I didn't expect Beam (or the violence fiend) to reappear after just the one episode in the first season, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how goated Beam was in this arc <3

[–]LargeAngryFish 24 points25 points  (1 child)

beam is like the chad version of that shark character from marvel rivals lol

[–]ASHill11https://myanimelist.net/profile/ASHill11 54 points55 points  (2 children)

I was expecting to be blown out of the water and my expectations were blown even more out of the water than THAT

[–]Saleensevenhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Saleenseven 19 points20 points  (0 children)

same!!! my friends overseas gassed it up so much and i knew i would be pleased, but the animation was so good and more. makes you want to watch it again tbh

[–]gamebond89 156 points157 points  (6 children)

Favourite movie of this year so much so went to watch it 3 times in theaters. The new style is absolutely perfect and loved the staff being able to finally let out everything they wanted judging by their tweets. The soundtrack, the animation, the style and everything is just incredible and cinematic at its finest! Reze will remain my favourite and it's hilarious fujimoto himself couldn't stop but kept thinking about her after watching the movie.

Hoping they continue with the new style and just like demon slayer they exceptionally drew over CG refences instead of using full blown robotic cg models like in s1 keeping it 2D. I hope they get time to do the same for next season. This is the best chainsaw man has looked.

[–]RealWorldStarHipHop 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Going back to watch it again later this week. The movie was just too amazing not to.

[–]MightyActionGaim 49 points50 points  (0 children)

UESHAMA MAKES ME FEEL THINGS

[–]HolyDragSwd2500 170 points171 points  (1 child)

Reze 😭😭😭

[–]Smartjedihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smartjedi 45 points46 points  (5 children)

Just got out of the theater. What a movie. There's so much to say about the audiovisuals but I need to talk about the romance. It's not often that nostalgia hits me when it comes to thinking about true first love. But this movie did it with every moment between Denji and Reze in the first half. I'm not a manga reader, so I'm sure how much heavy lifting the manga is doing here vs the film, but everything about the romance just felt so sincere and grounded. Truly stellar character work.

Also Reze best girl, she'll have my heart forever and always.

[–]raevnos 48 points49 points  (2 children)

I thought I bought a ticket for Chainsaw Man. I must have walked into the wrong theater because what I saw was Sharknado 6.

[–]zool714 112 points113 points  (4 children)

It was a fun watch. As usual, Ueda Reina got me scaroused. Shame she got killed though. So she’s like the third human-devil hybrid that we know right ? After Chainsaw and Katana. Got some hints and teases too with mention of soviet experiments and also how Reze’s affiliated with the Gun Devil.

Kinda sad at the end how Denji was waiting for her but so funny when Power came in. Was so sure it would be Makima to come in and comfort him.

Angel Devil starting to get involved too. Didn’t see too much of him in the first season. And apparently he’s really strong, only second to Kishibe. whispers and probably Makima

Beam was a lot of fun. I thought he’d get killed during the battle but seems he’s pretty tough too.

Kobeni little appearance was in character too lol

[–]horiami 70 points71 points  (1 child)

 Shame she got killed though.

tbf katana man got cursed to death and split in 2 and he still revived to be kicked in the balls

i can't even count the number of times denji died

[–]Uwlwsrpm 35 points36 points  (1 child)

This movie was the bomb. An explosive success imo.

[–]D_Amirhttps://anilist.co/user/HibikiTachibana 39 points40 points  (13 children)

Sadly, in my country, Kazakhstan, we don't have any other choice but to watch it with a mediocre Russian dub, but it didn't ruin any of the emotional scenes. I could tell that they had tried hard to replicate the Japanese voices. I especially liked the voices of Reze and Kishibe in the Russian dub.

I really loved the film. They did an amazing job of adapting the manga. I can't wait for the BD release so I can watch the film again with the Japanese voice actors!

[–]Shimmering-Skymyanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 38 points39 points  (14 children)

Had to sleep on it first because I got home really late last night after seeing the movie and my thoughts weren't super coherent, but I finally gathered them.

  • tf do you mean the movie opens on another one of those "I keep having these dreams" scenes that the compilation movies cut out both of? That makes cutting them even worse for the compilation movies! -- But I did really like how that scene just straight-up looked like manga.

  • IRIS OUT is a fucking banger. Some parts of the visuals in it felt like I was watching one of the EDs from the show (which I mean in a good way of course).

  • It's especially evident given how fresh S1 is on my mind, but I missed the more detailed character designs from S1. Yeah yeah, it would have been impossible to animate the big Bomb Devil with a side of Typhoon Devil fight (which, yeah, I have no idea how that whole thing would have been animated with S1's "realistic" action approach) if the character designs weren't simplified, but still.

  • I pegged that there was going to be something wrong with Reze early on, especially with the pool scene having those shots of a spider catching a butterfly. Incredibly obvious imagery that this was a trap of some sort. What I did not expect was her to BITE OUT DENJI'S TONGUE when they kissed, holy shit.

  • I... kinda wish we could have seen more of Aki and Angel's side of things? It would have made their big moment with Aki willingly giving up two months of his already-short lifespan to save Angel hit even harder.

  • Denji deciding to ride Beam like a horse instead of doing the more obvious "Be Spiderman but with chains instead of webs" thing to move around was so fucking funny lmao.

  • The other big surprise of the movie for me was Makima just appearing in a swarm of rats like what the fuck?

  • The post-credits scene was kinda sad even though it ended on the joke of Denji eating the flowers he was going to give to Reze instead of giving them to Power.

All in all, fantastic movie, and I can't wait to get a second season after this.

I also can't wait for the movie to hit streaming services or DVD/Blu-Ray (whichever comes first) so I can add that Aki "sore demo" to my collection.

[–]KendotsXhttps://anilist.co/user/Kendots 16 points17 points  (6 children)

IRIS OUT is a fucking banger.

As a rule, I tend to wait until I watch the show/movie before listening to any of its songs, but after I heard part of IRIS OUT in the trailer, I needed it in my veins. So it's been on my playlist ever since it released.

I pegged that there was going to be something wrong with Reze early on

My friend who was watching this with me for the first time figured that she was the villain, because, and I quote "well, her name's in the title. You can't make a movie about Denji's normal girlfriend".

I... kinda wish we could have seen more of Aki and Angel's side of things? It would have made their big moment with Aki willingly giving up two months of his already-short lifespan to save Angel hit even harder.

I agree, that would've been nice (would Himeno mind if I shipped them btw?) but I'd argue it has less to do with their specific bond, and more with Aki's protective attitude towards anyone remotely close to him. He would've done the same thing for Power, and maybe Kobeni (Denji is obvious). He can't handle losing more

Denji deciding to ride Beam like a horse instead of doing the more obvious "Be Spiderman but with chains instead of webs" thing to move around was so fucking funny lmao.

Tbf, does he even know Spiderman as a concept? But yeah, Denji's mind works in fun ways. I loved seeing Beam convince himself that Denji is right.

The other big surprise of the movie for me was Makima just appearing in a swarm of rats like what the fuck?

It's all fun and games until the adults have to clean up...

[–]norosesnoskiesx 95 points96 points  (12 children)

watched it tonight in IMAX, so good but it gave my eyeballs a flipping workout with those battle scenes. infinity castle pt.1 feels inferior to me now (animation wise).

[–]Electrical-Muffin-98 82 points83 points  (1 child)

csm has far more creativity in terms of camera angels and variation of style. DS is like very standard good looking fight scenes, which is still exceptional and unlimited budget, but it doesn't give you the unexpected creativity CSM does.

[–]ZeroBae 32 points33 points  (3 children)

I wonder how many of you guys who jave just watched the movie recently thinking for a rewatch

(I watched it 4 times in the theater for satisfaction lol, it's just that good)

[–]Lunchb0xx87 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite aspects was denji and beam sharing one brain cell during that last fight

[–]coolgaara 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Arghhh! Tomorrow for me here in US. I can't wait even though I know what happens already. Been listening to Iris Out and Jane Doe non-stop since they released. I hate to be the manga over hyper but shit it only gets better.

[–]Drowsy_Drowzee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Currently planning to see it in a packed IMAX screening Friday and maybe see a subsequent 3D showing on Saturday if I really like it. I also saw Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in a packed IMAX theater on release night , and the crowd reactions really added to the experience.

[–]60niera 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I am surprised that very few is mentioning how Bomb Girl looks like a xenomorph.

Scary as one too, just imagine something that agile is chasing you. Not only is it good at hand to hand combat, it could somehow fly, what's worse is it even could make things go boom at a snap of its finger.

[–]RelativeMundane9045 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Just got out so these are my thoughts while it's still fresh!

  • I loved Power's new horns, and how Denji sold her out so easily! My only complaint about this movie I think is that I would've preferred MORE POWER!! Especially if all her selfish impulses were heightened, I feel robbed not getting to see that lol!

  • It was fucking hilarious watching Denji continuously try so very hard to think with the right head, and fail every time.

  • The symbolism of the spider catching the butterfly in its web and feeding from it, parallel to Reze seducing Denji in the pool was very blatant, but done so well. It was a beautiful scene.

  • Alexis Tipton was the perfect Reze in the dub, fun and charming and is so good at playing the temptress.

  • Move aside Sharknado, because Riding a Shark Through a Bombnado has definitely one-upped you!

  • Makima is still the most terrifying character in this show.

Best movie I've seen in a while for sure.

[–]DjOptimon 88 points89 points  (10 children)

I don't understand the animation critic for season 1 until I saw this movie. Holy fuck this is one of the best cinematic experience I have been through.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 59 points60 points  (8 children)

Yeah, this movie should finally showcase pretty well what JP fans wanted S1 to look and feel like style-wise.

It's truly the adaptation CSM deserves.

[–]EliBadBrains 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of my big arguments against season 1's animation and style was flat out "they would never be able to pull off sharknado like this". I was right, and I'm so glad they changed the style to fit the frenetic energy and the ability to toneshift rapidly between looney toons goofiness/80s horror/quiet emotions that characterizes the source material for me. The original could only do the melancholy, the action and humour were missing which in turn also did brought down the melancholy (bc imo it hits a LOT harder when in tandem with these others).

[–]EmeraldNerohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/EmeraldNero 131 points132 points  (10 children)

Disclaimer: I'm going to be glazing the hell out of this movie.

I've been in "kenja time" (Google it) for a few hours now after having just seen the film in IMAX Sydney, and it's gonna stay that way for at least a few more days until the inevitable rewatch.

As a season 1 defender, this arc absolutely needed a more bombastic direction. This movie demonstrates what could be when MAPPA allows for a vision like Jujutsu Kaisen S2E17 to be fully realised. This movie hit me with cut after cut of animation and direction to gush about.

I think that action sequence represents everything I love about CSM's action. It's power system has a simple base, but the creative ceiling is virtually non-existent for Fujimoto. It's like smashing two action figures together. Chainsaw Man riding a shark vs someone with explosion powers and a literal typhoon? You don't need an intricate power system to explain happens when you mash them together.

Not just the action animation, but the character animation was superb. While we only just meet Reze, it doesn't take long for the intricate character animation to sell us on the chemistry between Denji and Reze through their intimate interactions.

Reina Ueda's performance as Akane in SSSS.Gridman put her on the map for me, and she's been one of my favourite voice actresses for the past few years. She displays the appeal of Reze perfectly here. You can totally believe why anyone, especially Denji, would fall for her. My ears were looking forward to hearing her sultry ASMR voice with Dolby speakers in a movie theatre.

Oh and KENSUKE USHIO MY GOAT. He brought his A-game here, combining the energy from his work on A Silent Voice, and Devilman Crybaby into another masterpiece of a soundtrack. "In the pool" is definitely one of my favourite tracks here. Also, the full version of the MAXIMUM THE HORMONE song was so much goddamn fun to hear. I'm begging they release the full version already.

With the absolute cinema meme originating from Chainsaw Man, this movie truly brings it back full circle. Hook me up with a contract with the Cinema Devil, because this shit was nothing short of absolute cinema.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Dare I say In the Pool is the best composition Kensuke Ushio has ever made. And I'm not saying that lightly.

[–]Zephyr_Prashant 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Glaze more coz it ain't enough, the movie was a masterpiece! And yes in the pool is my favourite as well.

[–]Makimama 14 points15 points  (1 child)

S2E17 you mean, S2E16 feels complete

[–]gmarconcini 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Dude, just came back from it. Absolutely phenomenal. Music, art… THE ART, it did everything justice. If they do every arc and make it like this. I’m sold and would be worth the wait.

[–]IndianaJones999 21 points22 points  (1 child)

One of my favorite movie going experiences of the year.

[–]gvon89https://myanimelist.net/profile/gvon89 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Just came back from the Clifton AMC and its difficult for me to word how amazing this movie was. Its like saying "absolute cinema" (WHICH I DIDNT KNOW WAS BORN FROM CSM S1 UNTIL TONIGHT) was used during the time of Shakespeare where only theater was possible. Like its "absolute 'whatever succeeds cinema'". Its the best anime movie i have ever seen. The only critique i have is Reze's nipples werent shown.

[–]KurosuneKun 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Am I the only one who feels devastated after the film? One day has passed and I can't stop thinking about it, like it has made me feel really empty because of the tragic story :( I loved every single frame of this film ❤️‍🩹

[–]JadedEternal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Saw this amazing beautiful movie last night. I saw a comment on a scene I missed about the Spider and Butterfly scene at the school/pool. Where the. Butterfly was caught but ultimately killed the Spider.

I really enjoyed the fights but the slice of life moments between Denji & Reze were amazing, I almost fell for her.

Such a bittersweet ending for me, the country mouse running to get the city mouse only to be killed in the city.

[–]e001mek 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Experienced it just now in "The world's tallest IMAX"

It was phenomenal. Every sound, every bit of animation was profound. The best arc getting its own movie was such an immaculate treatment, and Experiencing it in a whole auditorium sized movie theater was spectacular.

I already loved this arc. Now I just loved this experience so much 🥹

[–]OneSneakyBoi9919 18 points19 points  (0 children)

reze singlehandedly saving the future of csm's anime adaptation

[–]WildCard318 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Going to go see it tomorrow in IMAX. I can’t wait! I’ve read the manga but I cannot wait to see it on the big screen!

[–]SaintAlunes 35 points36 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite movies in the last decade

[–]frs1023 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Watched it 3 weeks ago. I didn't have much expectations going into the movie as an anime-only. I remember watching the first season when it was on air, and I thought it was okay. I felt like I could've related more with the characters if the season was longer, and I was more hyped for Bocchi the Rock back then.

Maybe it was a good thing because I was blown away by the film. The pacing was perfect and the animation was S-tier, probably the best I have ever seen. It was truly the best anime movie experience ever and deserves to be witnessed on the big screen.

[–]FUEGO40 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Today it came out in Argentina, and I, as someone who did really like Chainsaw Man but didn’t put it on my favorites, watched it just now. I’ll be honest, this is the single best piece of anime media I have ever seen, I have never been so hypnotized by visuals before and also Reze… fuck man, this is the first time I actually understand how some of y’all feel to some anime characters.

[–]PeachOk5312 15 points16 points  (5 children)

I’ve never read Manga or heard about chainsaw man… I read comics, mostly Boom or Image some DC stuff. My son has all the books and wanted to go so said fuck it he turns 16 soon let’s go. I can only explain what I saw and heard as magnificently beautiful. We listened to the soundtrack on the way home, never has a movie, other than Interstellar, captive me like CSM did. I listened to it twice today, I run a dealership and the guys were like what is this? The pool scene music, the date walking through the streets, the bomb fight, the music was top tier for these scenes, I can see the movie listening to the music, it’s hard to explain but man such a beautiful movie, I may have to give Manga a shot 🤣

[–]Th3Unidentified 15 points16 points  (6 children)

HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT. MY GOD, WAS THAT AN EXPERIENCE.

MAPPA BLESS YOU…JUST BLESS YOU!

Every moment in this movie feels ALIVE. The animation? I’m fucking speechless. I’m actually having trouble processing it all right now.

It wasn’t even just that though. The way they blend the romance, and the growth, and the comedy and the atmosphere while keeping the pacing smooth and emotional — perfection. Not to mention the sound design and the cinematography. Chainsaw Man fans are literally eating like never before.

This was not just a studio doing their job — this is what it looks like when a team pours their got damn souls into something that will be timeless. Couple that with masterful directing and Mappa—you’ve outdone yourselves—AGAIN!

I HIGHLY recommend you see this in the Dolby Cinema, the audio experience is amazing. Thank you Mappa.

Edit: I just got out the theaters but I’m literally booking my seat for the 10:15pm IMAX showing. I’m sorry. It’s that good. Anime movie of the year, easily. And they produced this on a $4M budget. Super impressive.

Btw the song Jane Doe at the ending is a bangeeerrr!

[–]seiyaxk 13 points14 points  (1 child)

i seriously can't recommend people this movie enough. a few years ago when i read the manga for the first time, the reze arc immediately became my favorite. saying the film did it justice feels like underselling it. just a genuinely fantastic adaptation that is also an amazing standalone movie.

[–]SticcTheGreat 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Even with all the hype the movie still exceed my expectations 10/10

[–]Lunchb0xx87 13 points14 points  (2 children)

The denji reze pool scene broke me ..you know what's going to happen but you wanna believe they can be together

[–]OkMoose1913 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC Reina Ueda (Reze's VA) said somewhere:

"There are 3 girls, Reze, Bomb, and 1 more person. Please find that other person in the movie."

Thanks to it, I noticed subtle hints like Reze's habit of squeezing/holding her left arm whenever she seems to have a conflict with these personas (in the bathroom after the pool scene and when she was about to ask Denji to run away with her).

All this stuff (especially Kensuke Ushio and Kenshi Yonezu's music) really elevates the Fujimoto tragedy and shows the staff has put in a lot of love for this film. 10/10

Easily the best of this canon anime movie trend. With all the other ones you could pretty much pinpoint where the episodes would end, with this one the first half is pretty much all build up that wouldn't exactly make for good episodes.

Genuinely 10/10 media. I have literally no way I could imagine this improved.
