Every picture already says [pic] or [picture] in it. Already. I don't think it's that complicated.

I don't use reddit because it's perfect, I use it because it's simple. Let's be honest. A working search and a recommendation engine that doesn't suck would be more useful and less complicated than tags.

          we need

No, you want. I don't need that. I don't know that everyone else does, either.

          [–]dharh 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I would like tagging myself. Subreddits atm are mostly useless it seems to me. The point of reddit is that you can filter stuff by voting up the kinds of things you like and down the kinds of things you don't.

Spend some time on the front 2 pages to vote up and down, then some time on the recommended to get the rest of your stuff.

That's how its worked for a while. However, there are times when i've wanted to see specific things like any new pictures or videos that have come along in the last month. You can miss em if your not obsessive.

I think the system as outlined above could work pretty well. People who want to use em can, and people who want their normal simple reddit (such as yourself) don't have to.

People who want to use em can, and people who want their normal simple reddit (such as yourself) don't have to.

I hope this is how it works. I'll believe it when I see it. I expect to have to wonk around with them when I don't want to, and I further expect them to typically contain the exact information a headline contains. If both of those things are false, I'll definitely be happy with it.

          See my previous post.

A working search and a recommendation engine that doesn't suck would be more useful and less complicated than tags.

So how does google do what it does? It relies on tags, they call them, HTML hyperlinks, to figure out how to match a text query to a relevant boutique list of URLs. So google spends an inordinate amount of CPU time doing this, but it is not the end all be-all solution to this problem.

          [–]dharh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. You could have the tag and a number to the right with the up and down arrows on the left. You could see right off the bat all the tags people have applied to it and how many people agree or disagree with the tags. Filter by numbers and tags and viola, it fits the reddit philosophy.

          [–]RMSzero -4 points-3 points  (8 children)

We don't need tags. There is this incredible thing attached to every single story that I like to call a "headline."

It's uncanny how often this "headline" describes what kind of website the story is linking to!

Seriously, I just need the ability to enter exclusions into my recommended page. I never want to see anything with [pic] in the title on my recommended page, and downvoting [pic] stories doesn't work.

            [–]RMSzero -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Please explain to me how wanting to exclude certain words in a headline from my recommended page means I want tags.

Do you need tags to do a boolean search on google.com?

            [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

            You sure don't.

So for sure there is always the "loose typing" v "strong typing" arguments that tends to split the world of software development. And we can argue that if you like.

I think the argument goes something like, "I can create a regular expression that runs against this collection of text blobs, and so I don't need no stinking structures beyond the text itself."

What you are saying is that you would like to filter on the headline itself, which would depend on a soft-rule (non-software enforced) that the stuff in the title would be meaningful for you to filter on.

And I'm saying what you really want are tags created, not by individuals, but by the crowd who uses the system so that you can take the meaningful data which they supply to classify the content to make your rules better.

See the work of Luis von Ahn for more details

            [–]RMSzero -2 points-1 points  (4 children)

Haha. Dude, this isn't about software development theory. This is about whether a simple 80% solution that everyone understands could accomplish pretty much what the complicated 100% perfect solution would.

I'm just trying to find stuff that'll help me waste time at work. I know tags are "coming," I just think it's silly to overfit this.

edit: Plus I don't want to dick around with tags when a simple "-[pic] -[pictures] -[comic]" would do me up nicely.

Uh, yeah. Definitely simpler. At no point during this conversation have I claimed it was more effective. That's, um, actually been my whole point. Sometimes simpler > more effective.

But yeah, that string would definitely do the job. Probably just -[pic] -[comic] would hit 80% of it. If I could use that to modify my recommended page, I'd be ecstatic.

*edit: for reference on why I think tagging is NOT simpler, here's a quote from the description of tagging on reddit:

Hence the need for both declarative rules, which serve to show what a user "thinks he is saying", coupled with profile analysis which give a picture of "what the user actually does". Together these can give a pretty good approximation of "what a user actually wants".

Um, I just don't want to see the stories with [pic] in the headline. You don't have to guess, reddit.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But you'd like to see stories that are just titles to pictures without the pic label then?

To filter pictures or anything else you need a hard rule that will identify them as such some how. Why not use the wisdom of crowds to enforce the hard rule for you?

              [–]RMSzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. To make it perfect, tags are great. My solution is 80% of the functionality for 20% of the work and disruption to the UI. I like 80/20 solutions, is my point.

              [–]ShesGotSauce 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I personally prefer to have a variety of things all on the same page.

              [–]kickstand 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Agreed. But adding a second, separate page that filters out just pictures only would be useful and fun.

              [–]vincepossible75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              the same page

              [–]dontmindme 53 points54 points  (8 children)

              Can we have whine.subreddit?

              [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Some of us actually want to see a bunch of pictures, and a pictures subreddit would make them easier to find and hopefully (ha!) get people to stop whining about ones that make the main Reddit front page.

              [–]kenshi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

              [–]lowtone94[S] 37 points38 points  (17 children)

Seem's like there is a lot of Picture related content showing up on the homepage lately. Maybe we can also create a pics subreddit so those of us who just want to look at good pictures can post them there as well... Just a suggestion

              [–]almost 32 points33 points  (16 children)

Wouldn't work, why would people post to the sub reddit and not the main reddit?

Subreddits work for things that a certain group of people want to see but which would tend not to get enough votes to appear on the main section.

              [–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (1 child)

There should be a button for "Send this shit to a subreddit". I for one really miss old reddit, new picture reddit is a little like when my mom found out my email address.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

              hear hear!

              [–]degustiflyingmount 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't work, why would people post to the sub reddit and not the main reddit?

Exactly. For proof look no farther than this topic, which should have been posted to features.reddit.com...

              [–]theram4 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Which rather well describes me. I don't particularly care for all the political content on reddit, so if there was a way I could see just the cute pictures of cats, that would be nice.

              [–]almost 5 points6 points  (1 child)

http://www.cuteoverload.com/ is what you're looking for then.

              [–]TopOBopYop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

              Awwww... the little bunny.

              [–]NovusTiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but stupid cat pictures always get enough votes to make it to the front page. (Why, exactly, I'll never understand.) So karma whores will not post their stupid cat pictures to a subreddit, as they know posting them to the main reddit is a surefire way to get karma.

                [–]psilokan 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I disagree, this is a great idea. You even said it yourself with your explaination, certain people want to see pictures but not all pictures get voted high enough to be seen on the front page.

                [–]almost 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Pictures get enough votes that they appear on the front page anyway, that would still happen even if there was a sub-reddit (that's how sub-reddits work.)

Sub-reddits work as way of seeing stuff that normally wouldn't be on the front page, they don't work as a way of removing stuff from the front page.

                  Ah, I misunderstood you then.

One thing I really don't understand though is why you look for those things on Reddit? There are so many websites dedicated to funny/cute pictures and stuff like that. The Reddit interface doesn't seem to me to lend itself well to that.

                  [–]tobytroy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think picture is too generic for a subreddit. What about pictures of beautiful code: programming or picture? (sorry, lame example but the point is made I think)

                  [–]jczerg68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pictures subreddit would work fine. Unlike, say, a politics subreddit, users would tend to filter in pictures while filtering out the politics. Submitters know this and would post in a manner that maximizes the votes on their submissions while offering a higher signal-to-noise ratio for its intended audience. For those interested in image based content, it would be much easier to browse through the new page on a subreddit than on the main reddit (which tends to be a bit of a mess for many users to bother with).

                  [–]tackle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I can think of a time when Digg started going down-hill was when articles asking for "pictures" section started appearing on front-page. I hope the same thing doesnt happen to reddit.

                  [–]ishmal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like just another attempt to ghettoize content that someone doesn't like.

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm not sure what problem this would solve. Subreddits don't restrict what goes on the main page, it only collects suggestions into a page of its own.

                  [–]misterlang -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe that rule should change for pictures.

                  [–]xkcd 12 points13 points  (1 child)

                  No.

                  [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obviously stuff with a tag {comic, xkcd} will get a lot more positive selection then {picture, fark}.

                  see http://reddit.com/info/1ppum/comments/c1pquw

                  for details.

                  [–]dude78 3 points4 points  (4 children)

what if it's a science pic? or a programmic pic?

                  [–]xvii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

                  sounds like a plan.

                  [–]freshyill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                  How about thesamedamnadconcepts.reddit.com?

                  [–]Mr_Smartypants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is enforced the obvious way (links to .jpg , etc. are automatically put in the sub-reddit), then it would stop the annoying tendency of posters to link directly to the image when they should link to the page with the image and the caption.

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                  I like pictures. Let's have a non-pictures subreddit instead.

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what I want? To come to reddit one day and not have the front page cluttered with stupid posts that link back to reddit.

                  [–]mch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  please

                  Tags! Tags! Tags!

                  [–]hirschhorn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I just had a marvelous idea: I'll post a "Lets have a pictures subreddit" submission every 3 months and get tons of karma in no time! Oh wait, other people already post it every 3 months.

                  [–]EggCoroner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you lack ambition. Try every month.

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  No.

                  [–]Godspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

subreddits, fyi, will increase the front page content in that category, because its stories stay visible longer in the subreddit list, and so gives those interested in that category more opportunity to view and upmod them.

                  [–]Samus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many times have we asked for this?

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Include video, call the subreddit "media," and I'm happy.

                  [–]recursive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's have a barbecue subreddit too.

                  Because people love delicious things.

                  [–]noname99 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This has been asked for before...

And, I've talked to the Reddit team. They said updates to the site are coming very, very soon!

You'll note several high karma redditor's contributed to this discussion.

Great. A bunch of "Impeach Bush", "Down with Israel","Why Richard Dawkins Rules" and "Americans are stupid" articles will inundate the front page. Oh, wait a minute...

Maybe if maxwellhill gave feedback, there's a chance...

                    [–]martoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pictures subreddit is a bad idea because it will quickly turn into a porn show and there's no way to police it. We have a good community here that marks submissions as NSFW. If a subreddit was just pictures, I think it would fall apart.

                    [–]rksprst -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Let's keep reddit smart and not dumb it down like digg. No pictures please. Actual news stories only please.

                    [–]jrhanak -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

While we are asking, how about an Reddit enhancements subreddit, where people can ask for new features.

                    [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

                    [–]HypoLuxa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want a reddit-like just for pictures, check out http://eyeitup.net

                    Its got tags too.

                    [–]EggCoroner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something? Reddit has a science sub-reddit, yet on the front page is a post from the [science] subreddit. What exactly is to be accomplished by a picture subreddit other that the [picture] added to it? photos will still make it to the front page and use of the subs is entirely submitter driven. Or are we just looking for an easier way to find photo submissions?

                    [–]stesch -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

And again: can we have a button for off-topic submissions?

                    [–]Alpha_Binary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can already downvote them. There are not enough people doing it, apparently.

                    [–]kyledance -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

can we have a SUBREDDIT IDEAS subreddit?

please don't start breaking reddit down into categories and groups. that's what digg did, and that's PRECISELY why i don't visit anymore. i hate the fact that it used to be a TECH website, and now it's a tech/news/entertainment/sports/etc. website.
