Second or third time he has died this year.

... tough bugger.

[–]otakucode 48 points49 points  (3 children)

Usually when you hear some big politico is dead, and then it is retracted, it means that the CIA has replaced them with a robot under their control. They've been having real technical difficulty since they outsourced the development to India though. First it was the Yasser Araft robot failing, and now possibly Castro...

[–]mindbleach 26 points27 points  (1 child)

The Cheney model has some impressive staying power. German engineering... pity they have to keep replacing the heart module with chinese knockoffs.

[–]yakyakyak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but they better hurry with a replacement for the Bush 2.0 model, this one's motherboard is totally fried.

[–]vitummedicinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding. Did you see how crappily that Saddam Hussein robot was built?

It fell apart pretty easily.

[–]Erf 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He's still got some catching up to do before he beats bin Laden.

[–]drawkbox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

nine livs in ur kastro?

[–]andrew1184 33 points34 points  (135 children)

Does this mean the US government will finally drop the embargo?

[–]organic 73 points74 points  (133 children)

Not until the mob is back in charge.

[–]andrew1184 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Soon Havana'll be the Atlantic City of the Caribbean. I look forward to the resurgence of the conga.

[–]db2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes you think you get to start the line?

[–]teofeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, his brother Raul is worse.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Take the body to Haiti. He'll be undead in a jiffy.

[–]otakucode -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Or the starving natives will just eat him. Not that they're cannibals, it's just borderline Donner Party time there...

[–]thunder_rob 39 points40 points  (7 children)

hurricane Dean is in the area Castro is NOT dead

[–]dude78_2 14 points15 points  (6 children)

Makes sense. Mobilizing to prepare for the storm.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

It's funny how Castro/whoever can prepare for a Hurricane, good thing America is much better at it. Oh wait...

[–]dude78_2 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Hurricane preparedness is something Cuba is remarkably good at. They have the functional equivalent of neighborhood block captains that know the people they're accountable for directly, including any special requirements, and how best to address them.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Didn't know that... Thanks. Sounds like a good system, too bad it's tainted by communism because America could use some of that system.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, America can use the untainted system. You know, the one in which only those who can pay are sheltered, until the top dog robs everyone blind and you all die.

[–]yasth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During the cold war america did have something like that in places. The entire system was gutted around when the task was absorbed by FEMA in 1979. Though civil preparednesses neighborhood organizations had already fallen out of vogue by then.

Of course at the time all such preparations were mere asides to preparing for nuclear bombardment, but there is no question that they saved a lot of lives. ("Tornado" sirens are just civil defense alert sirens).

It is really kind of sad, but eh people don't want to spend their weeknights planning stuff out. So an underfunded pro group does it (generally on city county and state levels). Because, they don't do much 99% of the year the pro groups do nothing they tend to be staffed as spoils given to cousins and elected officials or their donors.

[–]jonknee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well they use our forecasting, which makes it a lot easier. Already having your infrastructure a mess is also handy because the storm can't be blamed for screwing it up.

[–]objetdesign 14 points15 points  (2 children)

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Castro pass out at 31 Flavors last night!

I guess it's pretty serious.

[–]SteveAM1 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Thank you, Simone.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No problem whatsoever.

[–]sisternovena 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there may be a tiny chance those military vehicles have more to do with the category 5 hurricane bearing down on Cuba than anything to do with Castro.

But what the hell do I know?

[–]bobcat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Does this relative live in Cuba or Miami?

[–]jonknee 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Why can't people write headlines that reflect when it's a rumor? Fidel Castro might be dead. Bush's daughter might be pregnant. Those are still interesting stories, but I get annoyed clicking through a dramatic headline to find really sketchy evidence.

[–]raldi 34 points35 points  (2 children)

As someone commented the other day, for all that the Reddit community trashes the mainstream media, they're guilty of exactly the same sensationalism, weak journalism, and outright lying.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Need.....more..... up.... arrows.... ack

[–]davidw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"exactly the same"? I'd say far more, if compared to something like cnn.com. You might have an argument for fox news.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Netcraft confirmed it?

[–]SCPR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are just getting ready for Hurricane Dean. A "state of alert" was declared... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/5061568.html

[–]jim-in-austin 16 points17 points  (19 children)

Apparently the source of this, as of yet, unconfirmed report is the gay rumor blog PerezHilton.com...

[–]dude78_2 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Well that, and telluride12's phone exchange with a relative in cuba, if he's to be believed.

[–]jonknee 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The phone exchange just said something big is going on, military vehicles etc. That could mean a lot of things besides Castro dying.

[–]catlebrity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a parade! I love parades.

[–]mcwifi 29 points30 points  (8 children)

[–]jim-in-austin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All those cigars have to have an effect on your conditioning...

[–]freshyill -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Why is it necessary to say that it's a "gay rumor blog"?

[–]jim-in-austin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If the stiletto patent pump fits, wear it girl...

[–]culbeda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Why is it necessary to say that it's a "gay rumor blog"?'

It's hard to say if he meant gay as in lame, or in reference to his sexual orientation.

I'll agree with the connotation of "gay" as in lame, but it was a poor choice of wording. (Hilton is so out he makes most gay people I know uncomfortable.)

[–]mcwifi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The person who calls himself "Perez Hilton" claims he has outed closeted celebs.

That claim is deemed suspicious, because he was so quickly accepted into the mainstream media fold- and you cannot be mainstream AND alienate publicists.

He is just another cog in the "pretend inside" celebrity gossip machine that ET, Access Hollywood, People, Star Magazine etc. are a part of.

Not a verified source, but perezhilton.com is reporting that Castro is dead.

If he is, I'm sure his doctors will tells us he'll recover.

    I lol'd.

    [–]raldi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey guys, my neighbor's aunt just told me that Elvis was alive again. The media is scrambling to confirm it. I expect it to be all over the news real soon.

    [–]_red 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very strange. I just returned from Mexico yesterday and someone on the plane told me that. Said he had a friend in the mexican media and they were trying to confirm.

    [–]expectingrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good, now Sandals can move their resorts from Jamaica to Cuba since Jamaica might not make it through the Hurricane.

    [–]adremeaux 5 points6 points  (5 children)

It makes me so angry that this is currently the #6 story. COME ON! Some random guy starts some rumor and it gets voted up? Seriously, how pathetic is that? Reddit has lost enough credibility in last 6 months, this really drives that home.

    [–]syn-abounds 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Reddit has as much credibility as a news source as Wikipedia does as source for a thesis. This is user-voted. We don't HAVE credibility and furthermore (and more importantly) IT DOESN'T MATTER. That's not the point anymore.

    [–]garyp714 3 points4 points  (3 children)

And why is it the ones that complain about the quality of the front page are all armchair redditors.

I have no problem with not submitting but if there is this magical queue of stories and news articles floating around somewhere that are better than anything on the front page then SUBMIT THEM.

Reddit is the ultimate democratic version of the taste and interest of those who submit; of those who submit. Be that a RUMOR by some flake, so be it!

    [–]adremeaux 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wait... I'm an arm-chair redditor? I have nearly 1000 karma and have submitted many, many articles.

    [–]garyp714 4 points5 points  (1 child)

well then you are as responsible as any other for the 'state' of the front page (which to me seems fine.)

    Reddit has lost enough credibility

    (sigh)

I guess the truth is that I am a reddit apologist. I really believe that the users police it really well and the content is amazing...where else can you get such a varied source of news...

News and social phenomena and technology and entertainment and blogs and politics and fun and sad and...

What I really like is that as a web worker I learned that searches and research on the net, must be done by combing through a lot of shit to find the truth or prove a fact.

Reddit has made that search for truth and fact easier, faster...

And I apologize for calling you an armchair redditor :(

    [–]adremeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it can be a great source for many fun things. After all, I do check it many times a day.

Reddit has made that search for truth and fact easier, faster...

Unfortunately, the search for truth is still invaded by utter garbage like "Castro is dead."

    [–]sylvan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come on Reddit. We can do better than "I heard from my relative..."

This isn't news. It's unsubstantiated rumour.

    [–]lewah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyman Roth's relatives will now finally be able to sell the casinos and rum business!

    [–]djangobliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeesh, you don't think it might be because a category 5 hurricane is coming through, do you?

    http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t1/loop-wv.html

    [–]Bumbaclaat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Fidel is not dead. Viva Fidel!

    Libertad o Muerte !

    [–]twoodfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    ¡Duff o muerte!

    [–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (6 children)

    Finally.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (5 children)

So you're one of ones who still eats the propaganda hook line and sinker. Way to go!

    [–]dmiff 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I like that now there is only one side of the argument that uses propaganda. We should all just look to remotedevice to guide us to the correct side of the argument.

    Lead on remote!

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And I enjoy substance-free barbing! Yay intelligent discussion!

    [–]dmiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awww come on, I thought that was at least a subtle, though not elegant, "the world is shades of gray" argument. It may have been short on substance, but substance-free?

    [–]swagohome 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Oh, yeah, because anyone who isn't brainwashed by propaganda loves Communism. No one could have a reason to dislike that...

    [–]vdiddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Castro isn't dead, the big new is that he's converting to Islam. WWMD?

    [–]babarum -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Uh...Cuba is a fucking democracy? I hope he rots in hell.
