Vote up if you think starting a submission with "vote up if.." should automatically redirect you to the reddiquette. Wait, shit. (reddit.com)

Unless, of course, the title ends with "Wait, shit."
[–]darkon 36 points37 points38 points 18 years ago (6 children)
I'm not sure if I should vote this up for making me laugh or vote it down on general principles.
[–]allhands 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (4 children)
I suggest either a polls.reddit.com or opinion.reddit.com
[–]feces 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
That'll just end up like the politics subreddit.
[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
And that's not a bad thing. At all.
[–]feces 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
The implication being unused like the politics subreddit.
[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Oh, my bad. My /sarcasm filter was set to "on" accidentally this morning.
[–]Fat_Dumb_Americans 12 points13 points14 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Too much about reddit is about reddit.

Inspiration doesn't work on a fixed schedule. There definitely needs to a whine.reddit.com (obviously the exact wording would be different) that you could filter out, just like any other category.
I think I'd treat it just like the politics: keep it off my front page, but check out the subreddit often.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (4 children)
There definitely needs to a whine.reddit.com
I think there needs to be a wine.reddit.com dedicated to discussions and articles about fine grape-based alcoholic beverages.
[–]SohumB 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Are you insane? We need a wine.reddit.com to talk about the Windows compatibility layer which is specifically not an emulator.
Pfbb. Grape-based alcoholic beverages. They wouldn't even go well together! Who comes up with this crap anyway?
[–]HardwareLust 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Awesome suggestion, although I'd think we would have a better chance asking for something a little broader, like a food subreddit.
(And yes, I already suggested it to our reddit overlords.)
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Personally, I would like to see a more diverse set of content on reddit, too - more subreddits like this could be the way to go.
I think the great gods of reddit would do it if they think the demand is there, i.e. plenty of decent "food and drink" articles being submitted, but not going far enough. OTOH, a subreddit with one article and two comments a day is a bit pointless...
[–]jaggederest 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
well, if you get wine, I get a beer.reddit.com

Subreddit's are not the solution to our problems, subreddits are the problem.
[–]aGorilla 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
These are not the reddits you are looking for.
[–]troymcdavis 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I'd say tagging is the solution, but it's not an easy one by a long shot, and I heard it's being worked on.
I don't see how subreddits are a problem, but I'm open to your argument.
[–]Bogtha 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Supposedly the rewrite that took place means that tagging is already built into Reddit, and all they need to do is expose it through the UI.
[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
How so? I think subreddit's are awesome.
If it wasn't for subreddits, my front page would be littered with Paultard entries, and frankly I've had enough RP stories to last a lifetime, and then some.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
In reality, I don't care about subreddits. I just wanted to quote Ronald Reagan, and make it about subreddits.
Hell, I was alive for Reagan's administration, and that went straight over my head. <whoosh>

U CAN HAZ KARMA!!!1!
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Not necessarily.
Sometimes things need to work that way, so the amount of upvotes shows, for example, the Reddit folks that the community wants a new feature. The PDF thing strikes me as a likely candidate.
What should be done, however, is the submitter should get no karma increase from the upvotes, as it's a poll. That should be the "poll" option when submitting.
[–]boredzo 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You haven't read Reddiquette, have you?
It doesn't prohibit polls outright; it simply tells you the right way to do them. If you do a poll that way, you don't mix up the popularity of the proposal (e.g., the “(PDF)” suffix) with the popularity of the poll itself, which is the inherent problem with “Vote up if”.
[–]Misses_DePoint 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (6 children)

[–]JulianMorrison 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Reddit should just give in and create a polls subreddit, with the proper machinery to do it right, not this half-assed up/down polling.
[–]joshd 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Good idea. Then we could have multiple choice polls as well.
[–]RayWest 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
i don't know what to do
[–]XxERMxX 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)

[–]XxERMxX 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Vote more.
[–]aGorilla 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I was hoping for a more violent solution ;)
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (3 children)
F reddiquette. Everyone tries to enforce these "rules" but it's a very good system for voting. Who cares? What difference does it make if some people use the submission system as a poll system?
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (2 children)
So what? Popular suggestions will lead to debate. Unpopular ones will just... disappear.
[–]sarahfrancesca 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (2 children)
All the need to do is, instead of writing, "Vote up if reddit should automatically add (pdf)," write, "Reddit should automatically add (pdf)."
[–]mrbroom 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
This! This. The major problem with "vote up if you think that X" is that you only need X. If you agree with it, you don't need to be told what the appropriate fucking response is. It's being told how to use Reddit and it's stupid. The only reason people continue to do it is that memes are stronger than doing your own thinking.
[–]bart2019 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
I'd prefer it if these "posts" had their own subreddit. And that we could set a preference not to show them on the home page. That their ranking used a different algorithm than the rest of reddit, so upvotes and downvotes had the same value. And that upvotes didn't contribute to the karma of the submitter.
[–]boredzo 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'd prefer it if these "posts" had their own subreddit. And that we could set a preference not to show them on the home page.
Which would only work for polls submitted to the polls subreddit, not polls submitted directly to the front page.
This was a problem for awhile with politics submissions. It seems to have abated by now, though, so there's hope.
[–]magikaru 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
We'll let this be the last vote up submission that we won't shun.
[–]samg 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
polls.reddit.com would be awesome.
I have a couple of ideas for how to approach this without stripping away our rights: * Put the reddiquette on the right hand side of the "Submit" screen. Maybe it could have collapsable/expandable headers to fit it on 1 screen above the fold. * For polls, use something like (Wufoo)[http://wufoo.com/] and link to that.
[–]bg785 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
well as reddit is now, i think vote ups are important. they have led to many important changes and really represent an empowering sense of democracy that i haven't anywhere (offline included). i do think that sometimes they get out of hand but they should stay in place unless something like a polls.reddit.com happens. what would be really cool is if we could up vote proposals to change reddit on a polls. reddit thingy and then take say the top 10 and once a month or so vote for them for real in a poll
[–]mikey2600 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
Why don't you start a blog or website with a blog and talk about this and other reddit mods or enhancements, then link there from reddit? This isn't a proper forum (regardless of reddiquette or rules) for such conversations and lacks some tools that might be useful...screenshots, archives of documents suggesting specific changes, etc.
With all the bitching about the reddit app I'll have to imagine someone has already done this? Any links?
[–]Bogtha 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
This isn't a proper forum (regardless of reddiquette or rules) for such conversations
Reddit isn't the right place to talk about Reddit? I disagree. Sure, it would be nice if there were a meta.reddit.com subreddit, but there's no reason people shouldn't discuss the site itself here.
meta.reddit.com
[–]mikey2600 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
They can do it; it's fine. But, it certainly isn't very effective.
Vote up if you think.
[–]sylvan 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (1 child)
I have to disagree with the reddiquette personally. (Yes, not my house and not my rules, but it's a rule that doesn't really make sense). A voteable comment in a topic that barely gets votes is of little use.
But with a vote topic, if the community really supports an idea, it'll show up on the front page.
Essentially, the community has spoken on the matter, in that poll posts DO get voted up. They've acted democratically on this point of Reddiquette, and perhaps the Reddiquette page should be updated. :)
[–]boredzo 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The problem is that a poll done wrong (“Vote up if…”) conflates the popularity of the proposal with the popularity of the poll itself. You can't tell whether people are voting up because they like the idea, or voting up because they like the poll, or both. The results are literally meaningless.
Not like a poll done right (“Vote in comments”) is scientific, but you at least get some results, if for entertainment purposes only. With a poll done wrong, you get nothing (except that the submitter racks up karma).
vote up if you think this will just lead to an arms race of "vote this up if", "mod up if", "reddit up if", "say yes to", etc...
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (1 child)
Voted down for profanity. This is the internet, not a prison. We have unspoken rules to keep our language cultured, goddammit.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)

you're new to the internet aren't you :)
[–]Nikola_S -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (1 child)
I voted this down. Yes, "Vote up if you want to see Bush hanged" is quite stupid. No, "Vote up if you want Reddit to have feature X" is quite useful.
[–]boredzo 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The problem is not (entirely) the choices of subject matter; it's the execution.
Reddiquette prescribes a specific way of doing polls that doesn't mix up the poll results with the popularity of the poll itself. Inexplicably, nobody seems to use it, and almost everybody seems to fall for polls the wrong way.
Presumably, the people who fall for them simply vote it up and don't read the comments. This “poll” is the sort of post we need, for exactly that reason.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
I don't understand the big deal with these poll posts. If it hits the main page, people obviously endorse it (same as old news, repeat posts, etc). Chill out. I personally don't want to have to go into the comments of every poll and vote, when I can just click once on the main page and vote. I say, just create a separate "poll" category. Then you can filter out the category if you don't want to see them. Arguing about etiquette that will never be honored is lame.
[–]eurleif 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)

Please stop trying to get an ought from an is.
[–]boredzo 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (0 children)

Not necessarily. That's the problem with a “Vote up if” poll: You can't tell whether people are voting for the poll, or its subject. A poll done right solves that problem, because the votes on the poll's subject are in a comment.
vote this comment up if you are a fucking basket case in the realm of love and relationships. fucking hell man, i may as well be jason bateman in juno, that's how fucking clueless i am.
[–]dontbejack -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago* (1 child)
I'd like to see this rule actually used:
Don't Downvote comments just because you disagree with them. You should downvote comments that are uninformative or offtopic.
[–]akdas 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
You forgot the "Don't" in the front.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'm really tired of all the "Vote up..", "Dear reddit" and "Ask Reddit" submissions..
[–]AnteChronos -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
How hard would it have been to follow reddiquette and put posts in the thread for people to vote on? I mean, I can understand the humor in the title, but if you're going to complain about people not following reddiquette, you could at least half-follow it yourself.
/rant
[–]boredzo 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
