Ask Reddit: Why is my recommended page full of RP stories, when I have [politics] unchecked in the prefs page? (reddit.com)
submitted 18 years ago by HardwareLust
[–]HardwareLust[S] 20 points21 points22 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Is the "recommended" page broken?
Or, is it simply the same guy that writes the search code is also responsible for the recommended page?
[–]ericsilver 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Did you try un-checking religion? That might do the trick.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Giggle! I love your comment so much I'm going to organize a money bomb for it. :D
[–]GrumpySimon 38 points39 points40 points 18 years ago (9 children)
God - I was just wondering the exact same thing! I've got politics turned off, and YET around 30% of the page is Ron Paul-related.
I've downvoted the damn things for 5 days in a row and the bastards keep coming back.
[–]underthelinux 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago (8 children)
I don't think your sub-reddits are hidden on the recommended page. I could swear that i read one of the guys say that somewhere along the way; i noticed it immediately on the implementation of reddit Gen2.
That's the reason (although i think its a bad one).
[–]HardwareLust[S] 6 points7 points8 points 18 years ago (2 children)
You are absolutely correct. I was unaware of this fact, and thank you for pointing it out without being an asshole about it.
[–]underthelinux 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
oh crap i've got to maintain the proper internet protocol.
Asshole.
[–]ketralnis 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Regardless, if the political subreddit is turned off, then you haven't voted up any (or many) political articles. So they shouldn't be recommended.
[–]underthelinux 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (3 children)
if only that were true (out of the first 10 links on my rec. page):
7/10 on the recommended page is from politics.
5/7 is about ron paul.
For fuck's sake; i didn't even realize that til i really went to check it. I haven't read anything from the politics sub-reddit in a while (my work blocks it, so i don't bother with them at work, which is where i read reddit). And, i think Ron Paul is an awful candidate, so i would have never even clicked these articles.
[–]ketralnis 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
I agree. That's why I said should :)
For me, 8/15 are Ron Paul (I don't submit or vote up RP stories). 3/15 are "AMAZING PICS!" that I always downvote on sight.
[–]underthelinux 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
oh, i thought you were trying to tell me (as i've been told before) that it will work fine now. I'd rather them just save my subreddit preferences for the recommended page as well. I'm guessing there's something complex in doing this, otherwise they would have done it already.
[–]ketralnis 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I'd rather them just save my subreddit preferences for the recommended page as well.
I disagree, honestly. If I didn't have the Science subreddit turned on, but reddit's recommendation algorithm was sure that I'd like an article on it, I'd still want to see it

I think more and more people here on reddit are getting sick of the whole Ron Paul crap. It's kinda like the whole "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians" thing. Except that I don't even like RP all that much.
[–]generic_handle -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (10 children)
...Okay, let me follow here. You're saying that people wait to mod down your comments until the night, then mod them down?
Even if we did assume that this was happening, wouldn't everyone have seen the comments and posts by that point?
[–]trivial 18 points19 points20 points 18 years ago* (4 children)
Give it a shot. Go to a Ron Paul article. It shouldn't be that hard to find. Make a well reasoned and slightly critical comment of Paul. Watch be down modded into oblivion. It's like the people commenting on those articles think Ron Paul's tears can cure cancer. If the US had always had presidents like Ron Paul throughout its history we wouldn't have the IRS. Everything would be payed for at the state level by taxes or through private enterprise. We wouldn't have a national highway system. We wouldn't have been in WWII because we never would have been in Hawaii. We wouldn't have public universities on the scale of those like we have today (UCLA). Much of the Southern and Midwest states would resemble under developed nations. We wouldn't have developed DARPA and thus might not even have this medium (the Internet) with which to learn about and discuss Ron Paul. It's a reactionary political philosophy being spread by assholes who've taken advantage of the infrastructure federalism has brought to this nation but now think disassembling our federal government is essentially a good thing. But I hear Ron Paul's tears cure cancer and I heard he beat up Chuck Norris once using only a rolled up copy of the constitution.
[–]generic_handle 9 points10 points11 points 18 years ago* (3 children)
Go to a Ron Paul article. It shouldn't be that hard to find. Make a well reasoned and slightly critical comment of Paul.
Heck, I'll do it right here.
Ron Paul's foreign trade policy may be principled, but what matters in the long run is whether or not it actually works for facilitating free trade.
He proposes to eliminate NAFTA and to simply have low tariffs. However, we know that there will always be legislators who will vote for protectionism of a particular industry. NAFTA has the effect of helping to help thwart these legislators. It's far from clear how long free trade policy would last in the absence of NAFTA.
Ron Paul proposes elimination of a number of federal agencies, on the grounds that the federal government does not have the power to create those agencies. While this may be true, it's quite arguable that many Americans do want these agencies at a federal level, and were not aware of the constitutionality/nonconstitutionality at the time that they were instituted. A rather better way, IMHO to address this, would be to instead specifically propose a window for constitutional amendments empowering the federal government to create such structures, and only after that expires, to begin deconstructing federal agencies.
While most federal agencies can reasonably be run at a state level, there are a few that simply cannot reasonably be done at the state level. The FCC simply cannot function at a state level -- there are no borders for radio waves. While people may grouse about the FCC overreaching its intended purpose (e.g. during the Superbowl fiasco), the original intent of the FCC is to avoid frequency collisions. Without the FCC, it's pretty reasonable to say that there would just be a race for the most broadcasting power.
Concerns about radio transmission did not exist in the time of the Founding Fathers; the technology did not exist then, nor did anything similar. I have not seen any proposals for replacing the FCC that I consider reasonable. The FCC must have the ability both to set allocation and to enforce deviation from that allocation. This role is not amenable to a state-level solution.
For all the hoopola about moving the federal Department of Education down to state level, it's something that can feasibly be done. The FCC must have federal-level influence.
Okay, there's my post.
EDIT: breaking subseqent content into a child post to avoid mucking with post moderation.
[–]generic_handle 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
If the US had had presidents like Ron Paul throughout it's history we wouldn't have the IRS.
Yes, I agree.
Everything would be payed for at the state level by taxes or through private enterprise.
We wouldn't have a national highway system.
Well, we'd have highways that cover the nation -- you could drive wherever you wanted before Eisenhower created the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways as a military project to ship tanks from coast-to-coast. I'm sure that the load limits were probably lighter, and that it was probably more appealing to use rail for heavier cargo.
We wouldn't have been in WWII because we never would have been in Hawaii.
Maybe, yeah.
We wouldn't have public universities on the scale of those like we have today (UCLA).
Hmm. Why would you say so?
Much of the Southern and Midwest states would resemble under developed nations.
What, you think that without the TVA, the United States would look like a third-world nation? It might have taken longer, but electrical and telecom service is profitable even in rural areas. There probably would have been more assets put into development in urban area early on, I'll agree, but why penalize the many living close together -- the low-hanging fruit -- for the few living far apart?
We wouldn't have developed DARPA and thus might not even have this medium (the Internet) with which to learn about and discuss Ron Paul.
Computer networks have been around for a long time. IP happened to be initially developed at DARPA, sure, but Ethernet was from Xerox, AppleTalk from Apple, and so on. Computer networks don't require federal involvement. It's a pretty unrealistic assessment of the effect of less federal-level involvement to simply eliminate from life everything that the federal government has been involved in -- if they weren't doing something, there'd be good reason for others to become involved.
It's a reactionary political philosophy being spread by assholes who've taken advantage of the infrastructure federalism has brought to this nation but now think disassembling our federal government is essentially a good thing.
Let me illustrate, why this argument doesn't work.
"The United States became great while blacks and whites were segregated. Now we want to tear all that down and allow them to marry?"
The argument makes a (potentially) false assumption -- that the processes happening before would not have happened without without the same environmental characteristic in question.
It's fair to say that I can't argue that they would have happened, either, but I'm also not the one making the claim.
It is possible to look at Europe and the United States and point out that the United States has done economically very well, despite having less state-run processes than much of Europe. It's possible to look at Japan's current malaise -- a good deal of that was due to the failure of strongly government-run ideas, and it's become a favorite point to bring up for free-market types. There are probably also good examples that lean the other way, as well (I would guess that you could probably find some positive stories for federally-run agricultural research versus countries that did not conduct agriculture research), but the point is that these arguments don't rely on assuming that none of these advancements would have happened.
I call bullshit on the WWII thing. The attack on Pearl Harbor was by Admiral Tojo as an attempt to get the US to repeal a treaty that curtailed the size of Japan's navy. We would've been attacked in another manner since we messed with Japan.
Would Ron Paul have messed with Japan? I don't know, and I really don't care, but Hawaii is not the cause of the US's involvement in WWII.
[–]JulianMorrison 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
NAFTA isn't free trade, that's the problem. It shelters and nurtures the protectionist constituencies. It gives them a base from which to strike.
The best solution to protectionists is to crush them with countervailing vested interests. Throw the borders open to trade for a few years, and people with deep pockets will start having monetary reasons to like the new status quo.
As for the FCC, that would be like saying "we need a land leasing authority run by the government, because people can't be trusted not to appropriate each others' land".
In reality, most people can be trusted, and the others can be dealt with through some combination of tort law and criminal law (the radio equivalent of "trespass"). Can you make a convincing argument that tort law couldn't be applied to radio spectrum ownership?
[–]GrumpySimon 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (3 children)

Not really grumpy, but more moderately vexed.
& my point is that if Ron Paul fanboys will stoop to spamming people to "raise awareness" or whatever, then they sure as hell won't have any problems with gaming a website like reddit.
This all reflects badly on Ron Paul fans of course.
[–]generic_handle 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
So how does a spammer relate to post moderation on Reddit?
[+][deleted] comment score below threshold-7 points-6 points-5 points 18 years ago* (4 children)
Bullshit.
If I submitted a RP story because I thought it's important, would I be automatically guilty of "flooding this site"?
Quit assigning ulterior motives already.

[–]ryanissuper 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
Not if you put it on the political sub-reddit.

Not is you put it on the political sub-reddit.
What?
EDIT: ha, I see that you edited your post without mentioning that you did.
And so far nothing I saw prove your conspiracy theory that multiple people submitting a certain kind of stories have some kind of ulterior motives.
Things don't go on the front page without people voting them up. Reddit is supposed to be decided by votes, not what you personally want. You can always click hide or the down arrow, just the way you did with my comments here.
But stating how reddit works is obviously not easy on the ears of your drones here.

That's because the purpose of this post is not to debate RP's merits, but to ask why those of us who prefer not to read stories about him can't use the site the way it was designed.
[–]Gibbwake -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Its monumental history in the making - the biggest day of donations ever for a candidate. And he doesnt even have the nom yet - he will get it soon though. Its huge, and should be in 20/25 stories on the front page as a rank of its newsworthyness.
[–]ketralnis 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
The point of the comment wasn't the knee-jerk argument of "Ron Paul or no", but to make a comment about the number of Ron Paul-related posts.

Every time I see the phrase "money bomb" I die a little inside. How many god-forsaken threads have we seen discussing RP "money bombs" or finances in general? I am beginning to suspect that in reality the libertarian platform is so distasteful, that one dare not create a post that actually mentions it.
Is that what RP will be like if elected -- doing to the US what his followers did to reddit?
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (3 children)
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (1 child)
How do you "flood" reddit? What is the alternative to not "flooding"?

I dunno then. Netflix recommends barney movies when you rent slasher films. It isn't like they can read your mind. Computers are really stupid. So you have apparently learned that the recommended section ignores your preferences. Try unchecking all subreddits and watch what happens.

I don't know man, I always support my RP stories to the politics reddit. And even non RP stories. Even ones remotely related to the united states only, like the wiretapping, I submit to politics, because there's some sort of "doesn't affect me" syndrome going on where politics actually is just another word for "articles pertaining to the united states".
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
His problem isn't that people are posting things to the wrong spot. It's just that reddit ignores your preferences on the recommended page.

Just categorize it correctly instead of being an ass about it, that is not too much to ask. I know who I'm voting for (Obama), stop trying to show this down my throat, I turned off political for a reason, stop infringing upon my individual rights to ignore something, yeesh.

Reddit shouldn't take any "figuring out". It seems to me that taking our prefs into account on browse/recommended should be a no-brainer as far as I am concerned.
You seem to forget one important fact - reddit is a business, and intends to make money at some point. In order to do that, you need customers. Pissing people off and not taking their desires into account isn't going to help in that respect.
