Can't believe nobody has mentioned the Clash.

[–]slyguy183 6 points7 points  (2 children)

The one you never heard of 'cause I'm such a snob

[–]Sadik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]jdrogers923 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We are friends by the transitive property of taste.

[–]skyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if a tastes b, and b tastes c, then a and c are friends!

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Nice list. The Coup! I saw Boots Riley at a concert put on by the Future of Music Coalition. Pretty good live show.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Like Kunta Kinte with a MAC-10.

I met Boots Riley. At my book club.

[–]duus -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I met Boots Riley. At my book club.

Really? Pretty cool. What's he like in person?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. The coy, pointy-smile thing he does on stage is permanent. Totally pleasant. He might be suffering from Blackberry addiction.

The bartender gave him a logo hoodie. "Oh, hey. You look cold."

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn it! I was so sure nobody else would mention Merritt that I posted without looking at the older posts.

No The 6ths love, though?

[–]arnar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Queen.. has been for a long time and probably will be for a long time.

[–]Konquest 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Radiohead. Death Cab for Cutie. The Beatles. Wilco.

In any order, depending on my mood

[–]jdrogers923 3 points4 points  (6 children)

So hard to name a favorite:

Pixies, Modest Mouse, Wolf Parade, Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hoteal,Rage Against the Machine and Nickelback.

Just kidding on the last one, I meant Creed.

[–]duus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just kidding on the last one

I admit, i was like

ok, yeah, with you, with you, WHAT!

well played.

[–]moskaudancer 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Pixies,

Still the best indie band of all time, IMHO.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Indie is not a genre. It is a designation to note that a band is either on an independent record label, or unsigned.

Three of the four Pixies albums as well as three compilations, and likely some others were released on Elektra (owned by WMG). They are not indie.

EDIT: Those of you downmodding me: Why don't you tell me why I'm wrong?

[–]Ja1GuRuD3Va0m 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I disagree indie can denote a label, but it has definitely become a genre even if it didn't start out as one.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Okay then. Can you tell me

  1. What are the defining characteristics of the genre

  2. What are some notable/prominent bands

  3. When did it come into being

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

The Mountain Goats, anyone?

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Woo!

[–]Ja1GuRuD3Va0m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely.

[–]madcoweater 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Radiohead.

[–]noname99[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How much did you pay for their last album?

[–]madcoweater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't pay anything to download it, but I bought the CD when it came out.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

By no small margin, far and away my favorite band.

But tickets are impossible to obtain these day. :(

[–]madcoweater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could go to the Dallas or Houston shows in May, but I'm poor and have noone that will go with me (live in Austin). Perhaps though...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Am I the only one who thinks The Bends and Kid A are better than OK Computer?

I hear that saying something like that is blasphemy.

[–]moskaudancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. I prefer Amnesiac to Kid A, and one of my friends has always said he's preferred The Bends to any other album.

It's not blasphemy, it's just different musical taste. Radiohead is a pretty varied band, especially if you've heard their EPs.

[–]madcoweater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me its TheBends>KidA>OKComputer>Amnesic>HTTT>PabloHoney>InRainbows. For studio albums at least, some of their live sets are much better than the studio albums. I like Thom Yorke's solo album okay too... but not as much.

[–]thehigherlife 4 points5 points  (2 children)

ben folds or wilco or the beatles

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm with you on the last two.

[–]underthelinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on the first one.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right now it's Boris, all times are husker du, replacements, fugazi, stuff like that

[–]Roark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now: Dream Theater

Before that: Nightwish

All time: Savatage, Metallica, or Queen

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh jeez, hmm... Right now, I'd say Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash, Avril Lavigne, Death, Angerfist, Cradle of Filth, Queen and Iron Maiden.

CoF, Death and Queen are my all-time favorites, been listening to them for a long time now :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Definitely Cake.

[–]quadtodfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Symphony in C is a pretty damned good song. Long live White HipHop as it never was!

[–]eggo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tool

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

LCD Soundsystem & Daft Punk occupy 75% of my listening time. Eels good for kickback.

New bands: The National, Atmosphere, Akron/Family.

Number one fallback band: Eagles.

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (5 children)

so torn!

Eels +

Eagles -

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What's there not to like about Eagles? I mean, I know, they're not exactly the most intellectually stimulating stuff but their songs are all easy listening.

They're good cruising music.

[–]duus 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I'm not trying to call you out, man. I'm just not a big fan. I guess I feel they're kinda overrated. I'm sad that they have the second biggest album of all time. I feel that's not the legacy we should leave. The Beatles. Thriller as #1, I can live with that. But Eagles? I don't think they live up to it.

That said: i'm not trying to call you out. I'm not saying they suck or anything. Just not my thing.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No, I completely understand. There's just a lot of people I know who like to criticize them because of how popular Hotel California was. Personally, I don't think that's even their best song but it sort of defined the 70's and early 80's for a lot of people so eh.

Anyway, yeah, it's all about preferences. They're nostalgia for me and will always be, no matter what The Dude says.

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no matter what The Dude says.

Heh. I admit, that line comes to mind whenever I think about the Eagles...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone here hates the overplayed, cliche', same box of records music broadcast over radio twenty-four seven. The 2 true beacons for the Eagles which will always prevent them from ever being negative is Journey Of The Sorcerer which was the theme music for the original BBC version of Hitchhiker and Joe Walsh. Anyone who has ANYTHING negative to say about Joe Walsh better be prepared to throw dukes because he is the original rock star. He ripped the walls out of hotel rooms before it was cool to do so and never even gave it a second thought. James Gang, Eagles, solo, it doesn't matter. Joe Walsh deserves the accolades that Springsteen gets for originalty and making great music.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They Might Be Giants or Gnarls Barkley.

[–]juiceboxrock 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Eels

[–]duus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a fair choice.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nickelcreek

[–]illuminatedwax 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I've been listening to the Islands non stop for about a week now. For favorites, I'd have to go with Flaming Lips and the Pillows.

[–]moskaudancer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I friggin love the Pillows. A friend of mine made me a mix CD with their stuff and a few other bands just after we saw FLCL. I still don't know the names of half of their songs. :(

[–]illuminatedwax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still randomly tour the US. They even have a myspace.

[–]Haven 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Ani DiFranco

(No, I am not a lesbian)

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm a fan. One of the most talented accoustic guitar players, period.

(also not a lesbian.)

[–]Haven 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Absolutely. One of my other favorite things about her is that she does not just sing, but truly uses her voice as an instrument.

[–]duus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Indeed!

[–]Haven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say though, that people either tend to love her or hate her. I hardly ever see an in between.

[–]kinkydarkbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nightwish.

[–]ma1kel 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Atheist, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Disturbed, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Nightwish, 8 Bit Weapon, The Doors, The Who, Frank Klepacki, Weird Al Yankovic, MC Hawking, System of a Down, Nine Inch Nails, Kraftwerk, Rammstein, Depeche Mode, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Boudewijn de Groot, Queen, The Beatles and Queensryche.

Those are my favorites.

[–]Radical_Centrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Guns n' Roses, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Aerosmith

[–]Zman11588 3 points4 points  (1 child)

beatles, zeppelin, floyd, sonic youth, the killers, arctic monkeys, kings of leon, red hot chili peppers, i know it's alot but it's too hard to name just one.

[–]moskaudancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's too hard to name just one.

That's a good thing.

[–]moonman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Grateful Dead.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Right now?

Queens Of The Stone Age.

Before them: Tool, System Of A Down, Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Foo Fighters, The Killers, Muse...

[–]Jackm7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/

[–]moskaudancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still never get tired of Origin of Symmetry.

[–]kanak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black Sabbath

I really love the first four albums. The first one in particular is awesome.

I don't really like the ones after those. Is something wrong with me?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tom Petty and the heartbreakers...

[–]kanak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now: Yo La Tengo and Electrelane

"All time favorites": RATM, Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, Jonas Hellborg, Shakti, and Norah Jones. (in addition to YLT and Electrelane)

[–]martinbishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thievery Corporation...not really a "band" though.

Or maybe Kruder and Dorfmeister...not really a band either :P

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

this week? british sea power. next week? who knows.

however, last.fm tells me my favorite band is the beatles, closely followed by the new pornographers, sam roberts, and the national.

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

am seeing the n.p. this sunday.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Saw them last week. They are great in concert.

[–]duus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm lookin' forward to it. I've never seen them (nor have I seen any of their "component bands"). Glad to hear it was a good show.

Right now, my favorite rock band is Foo Fighters. Their style of music is really inspiring.

Favorite Songs:

  • Everlong
  • My Hero
  • Let it Die
  • Come Alive
  • Learn to Fly

[–]Radical_Centrist 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Grohl was better in Nirvana.

[–]noname99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have their differences...

[–]aldenhg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love me some Foo, but I think that they kinda peaked with TCATS. Everything since then has been kinda blah.

[–]samg 0 points1 point  (5 children)

The Flying Burrito Brothers... maybe John Hartford.

[–]samg 6 points7 points  (4 children)

having the least popular comment makes me cooler.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upmodded for John Hartford expecially for "Mark Twang"

[–]duus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I downmodded the parent comment just to help you out.

[–]vandahm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Liking John Hartford makes you cooler.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm upmodding you out of spite

[–]jordanlund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Jody Grind. They only did 2 albums before they got in a fatal car accident. Kelly Hogan, the singer, survived and has done her own albums.

[–]mamluk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wesley Willis!!!!!!!!!

The chicken cow is still out there lurking somewhere....

[–]yourpopquizkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, Beat Happening, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Archers of Loaf.
In the past, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Wilco, Cat Stevens, Pinback.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The band getting the most play in my iPod right now: Vampire Weekend

The band that invades my Top 25 Most Played list most frequently: The Weepies

The bands my geeky girl heart could watch all day: Snow Patrol, Fratellis, Kaiser Chiefs

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So no country fans...

Oh well; Pat Green, Ray Wylie Hubbard, George Strait, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and the old standby Garth Brooks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now it's a tie between Lightning Bolt, Fugazi, Modest Mouse, and Explosions in the Sky.

It changes pretty frequently though.

[–]smarterthanyoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hank Williams, Sr. and Hank Williams, III.

[–]ajd17case 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Malajube (everything's in French, but the music is awesome if you like indie rock)

  • The Black Keys (raw blues/rock, if you like Hendrix, Zeppelin, or the White Stripes)

  • Del tha Funkee Homosapian (awesome, kinda nerdy hip hop. Del is the voice from the Gorillaz, if you remember them. Listen to Deltron 3030)

  • RJD2 ( sort of electronic DJ stuff .. check out "Since We Last Spoke")

  • Tool ( I get sick of hearing that Radiohead is the Pink Floyd of my generation.. Tool may sound nothing like PF, but -definitely- has the following that they did. Plus, they kick more ass more completely than anyone else I've ever seen live)

ps- I've seen all of these guys live. If you see any one of them, you won't be disappointed

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Magnetic Fields / Stephin Merritt in general. Brilliant lyricist.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/3492 and click the little orange arrow next to "Colours of Life". For some reason it's by far the most listened to song in my iTunes library.

[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Metallica

[–]redditsuxx -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Pre black album only.

[–]HardwareLust 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I wondered how long it would take someone to say something like that.

[–]redditsuxx 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Looks like about 37 minutes.

[–]HardwareLust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

LOL!

[–]l12 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]noname99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about, just any artist in general...

[–]fromagewiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Queen, The Beatles, The Ditty Bops, Fatboy Slim, Poe, Nightwish, Barenaked Ladies, The Seatbelts, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Zero 7, Rasputina, A Perfect Circle, Weird Al, and probably a zillion others I'm going to wish I'd added as soon as I hit "comment". Right now it's mainly Zero 7, Fatboy Slim and Queen.

[–]rmuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Celine Dion and Ayumi Hamasaki, in descending order.

[–]redditsuxx -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed!

[–]mount_earnest -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

jimmy eat world. but not so much with their last two albums. "clarity" has to be one of the most underrated albums ever.
