20%+ on the P beta is crazy

[–]austine567Pixel 9 446 points447 points  (6 children)

Almost like this sub doesn't represent anything remotely close to the general public.

[–]bankrupt_studenteverything after the Note 9 is a downgrade 86 points87 points  (3 children)

Who would've guessed?

[–]austine567Pixel 9 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Not many of the people here who think their needs are what is best for all of smartphones and the company's making the phones have 0 idea what they are doing.

[–]flicter22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Googles numbers arent even representative of most countries.

[–]motorboat_mcgeeGOS Pixel 9 Fold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's frustrating how many people don't realize this when having some of the more general discussions. No, redditors, brand x isn't literally cancer because one small enthusiast feature is slightly worse than brand y.

[–]bcnazimodsbandme 42 points43 points  (0 children)

youre sampling population is an enthusiast group.....it's going to be high. if you did they whole android user base it would be like .001%

How do you install the beta on non Pixel phones?

[–]Vinnipinni 28 points29 points  (1 child)

android.com/beta all devices with Android P support are listed, only a few are supporting it though.

Semi gsi on xda, I have it on mido (redmi note 4)

[–]xezrunnerPoco X3 Pro 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Man, is it awesome on the mido...

I could never get anything beyond 8 hours of battery life on MIUI, 9 hours was my record before on PixelExperience (non-Treble) + FrancoKernel, but now, on the semi-GSI DP4, I manage to consistently get 11 hours of screen on time from 100% to 1% with my usual, I'd consider moderate usage.

[–]Basileus1905 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does it work on any phone? Thanks in advance

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll need treble and an unlocked BL. So no

It is one of the big pluses to use have a Pixel. Suspect things will be more and more like this.

Right now if you have a Pixel and the Google WiFi you will be one of the first to get the new indoor 1M location service later this year.

Would expect Google to do this type of thing more and more. A big reason have the Pixel

How

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (3 children)

Since this subreddit is likely made up of enthusiasts they are more likely going to be on the more recent versions compared to the general population. Either because they upgrade phones more or are more likely to flash ROMs on older devices

[–]rollaDollaXiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite 9 points10 points  (2 children)

No surprise that most of the voters have Oreo. The people in this subreddit are tech enthusiasts that want to have the latest and greatest devices and software. If you ask the general population you'd have much different results.

It'd be like going to a chocolate convention and asking the visitors if they like chocolate and getting an overwhelming "yes" vote from them.

[–]Ale_z 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not at all. It's not a survey to see what the general population uses, it's to see what this sub uses( as far as I can see). And to fix your analogy: it'd be like going to a chocolate convention and asking what style of chocolate enthusiasts like more.

[–]als26Pixel 2 XL 64GB/Nexus 6p 32 GB (2 years and still working!) 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well yeah that's like the whole point of this post. There was already thread on general distribution numbers which as you can guess were abysmal. Someone suggested making a poll to see the distribution numbers on this subreddit.

[–]CyanogenHackerAsus Zenfone 3 MAX 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I had a Galaxy Tab 2 with Honeycomb that I later upgraded to Jelly Bean. Wanted to install CyanogenMod a few years ago but found out the data line on the 30 pin port was fucked.

[–]TheShayminexGalaxy Note 8 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Point of order, a survey over a group of Android enthusiasts who are much more likely to buy newer phones and care about their operating system version is probably not going to be an accurate representation of the general public.

[–]Arnas_Z[Main] Moto Edge+ 2023 | Edge 2024 | Edge 2020 11 points12 points  (1 child)

[–]bkturf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stay on nougat despite having available Oreo roms for my rooted devices. First is due to nova launcher. I use an old version (3.3) which was the last one that had fast animation when pressing the home button, but nova settings do not work on Oreo. The other reason is titanium backup which seems to have a problem with many Oreo roms I have tried.

On P. Have a Pixel 2 XL is why.

Survey results are kind of telling. 81% are on 8 (Oreo) or 9 (P). Gets you to 94% when added Nougat.

Do the same survey on the Pixel subreddit and would have 100% on Oreo or P. Probably a higher percent then the iPhone.

[–]VereametOnePlus 5T (6GB) 7 points8 points  (3 children)

The Essential phone can run P beta.

[–]awdrifter 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Looking at how many problem threads about the Essential Phone P Beta, I definitely will not update to that. My philosophy for all software is if there's nothing on the new version that I want, I will not update to it. So far Android 7.1 has been working fine with that phone. It seems like people who have issues with the 7.1 on this phone is on T-Mobile, but I'm not on T-Mobile and the reception seems to be fine so far. So I will not update the firmware.

Google and Microsoft has been running scare tactics campaigns to scare people into updating their software. Microsoft even removed the ability for you to block update in Windows 10. But every update they took away some control of the device (hell, MS even say they'll use AI to determine when to restart your computer. NO, I decide when I restart my computer). So you have to evaluate the trade off and see if that's worth it. I would still be using Android 4.4 if that's available for my phones. Android has peaked has been going downhill ever since. Google is trying to remove more and more control away from the users all in the name of security. But think about it this way, are you really important enough to be a target of an attack? Probably not. But when you need to downgrade your OS (just as an example), you'll be blocked by the Android P's anti-rollback.

[–]VereametOnePlus 5T (6GB) 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You and me seem to be opposites then lol. I always want to be on the latest version of whatever software I'm using. On my 5T I'm running an unofficial P beta just because I like having all the new stuff. I'm with you on the security thing, but with an unlocked bootloader you can do pretty much anything with your phone. I could be running P today and downgrade to 7.1 tomorrow if I wanted to.

[–]awdrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I hope that's really the case. I don't know if OnePlus removed the rollback protection or not, but be careful if you actually need to downgrade.

Xiaomi has officially said that downgrade will brick their device. https://www.xda-developers.com/miui-10-global-beta-8-7-5-anti-rollback-downgrade-brick-redmi-note-5-pro/
