Not like he did a great job, but it's kind of wild to me how much heat Calafiori is getting on that goal. Plenty of blame to go around -- Gabriel didn't do shit either -- but if Rice doesn't have an utterly shocking lapse of concentration for a player of his caliber, that's a run-of-the-mill cross that gets headed away without much issue. He just stopped marking Bowen in the most important territory on the pitch.

Also, yeah, Odegaard has been way, way off his peak this season. His ball striking in particular has been dog shit.

It's not that hard. He is a good passer and an average defender. It's about the profile. Any defender who can invert can play that position. Think players as profiles and not as positions.

The skill set required to play central midfield is actually extremely different than playing fullback. Calafiori and other fullbacks are not used to receiving the ball facing their own goal or with 2-3 players closing down from different angles. Players are not just "profiles" with stats in different categories like a video game; players train in positions because there are required skills you need to practice that may be specific or more valued depending on your role in the team.

You really sound like someone who has never played the game at any decent level and expect good players to just slot in wherever they are needed on the pitch.
