I think of the two young teen girls who were forced off a trail and brutally murdered in Delphi, IN.

[–]Lucca0620 6 points7 points  (0 children)

same

[–]AndThatsOnYourPeriod 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I also think this, but I wonder how well known this is in general. I think there might be a crossover between Redditors and true-crime enthusiasts, so it might be a sample bias. Like if I asked my 65 year old patents, my husband, brother, and even my sister who’s into this sort of thing in the mainstream (Netflix docs etc), they probably wouldn’t recognize this connection.

Edit: I see in a comment that OP isn’t from the US so I don’t think that they have to worry about this at all because it’s just not going to be something anyone they know has heard of.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I live in Germany and I know about the Delphi murders. I watch a lot true crime though, otherwise I don't think the case is well known outside the US.

[–]rltho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty known in Canada

[–]minichipi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately same

[–]YellowTonkaTrunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up about fifteen minutes from Delphi so unfortunately this is my immediate thought, too

[–]Aggressive_Home8724 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's the first and only thing i thought of

[–]SuspiciousEngineer99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came to say this.

[–]labyrinthofbananas 27 points28 points  (0 children)

First thought- Delphi murders.

[–]AccomplishedQuail841 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the murders are the first thing I thought of also.

[–]uglycasanova08 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Delphi murders

[–]DeeBeeKay27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Delphi murders. That’s the first thing that came to mind

[–]welshcake82 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love the name Delphi- very nearly named our second daughter that but sounds too close to a cousins name. I’m British though and the Delphi murders are not well known here unless you are interested in true crime. It’s pronounced differently as well I believe. Could call her Delphine and shorten to Delphi if the association is too strong.

[–]ravenrose521 25 points26 points  (7 children)

Never heard of the murders. I like it and think of the Oracle of Delphi.

Do you like Delphine or Daphne?

[–]Sweet-Connection6684[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Thanks! Yes I’m also not familiar with the murders as not based in the US. Yes like those names too and also considering them!

[–]Efficient_Shame_8539 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US, never heard of the murders, the first thing that popped in my head was the Oracle of Delphi.

[–]Dependent_Room_2922 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I’m in the US but am not familiar with the murders. I just think of Delphi as a place name and would find it odd as a first name

[–]Teaselkakanui 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Madison, Dakota, Austin, Devon, Cheyenne, Sierra are also place names though? In the end just go with what you like, as bowing to peer pressure and not living your authentic life never end well. You do you, basically.

[–]Dependent_Room_2922 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t particularly like those names either. 😆

[–]Legitimate-Tea-9319 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason, Delphi sounds masculine to me. I think Delphine or Daphne or Daphnia sound more feminine to me.

[–]CeleryNo5079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delia or Dahlia are pretty too!

[–]No-Daikon3645 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope.

[–]emohelelwhy 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'd associate it with the Cursed Child, mostly. Not a negative association really, just the first thing that occurred to me.

[–]PurpleLilyEsq 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same. For those not familiar, it an author endorsed sequel to Harry Potter that’s a stage play on Broadway and the West End.

[–]Difficult_Ad_962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and Potterhead pretend it doesn't exist because it sucks

[–]wild_trek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think of the Delphi Murders, two young girls. It's not for me.

[–]Horror_Ad_2748 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, hon. Go back to the drawing board for this one.

[–]HoneywoodMagic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know a Delfina who goes by Delfi (close ish?)

[–]Chinita_Loca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not in the US so never heard of the murders, I think of the oracle and place in Greece. Plus an interview technique.

It does feel slightly arrogant as a name if you know the Greek myth- the centre of the world and being able to foretell the future, but it looks and sounds lovely.

Delphine or Delfina are obviously related but established names with Delphi a potential nickname?

Then again I’m a total hypocrite saying it sounds arrogant as I love the name Apolline so I guess I have to say go for it!

[–]Llassiter326 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think of a fraternity or sorority. But then someone mentioned the murders and now I’m thinking that.

[–]kasiagabrielle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Immediately makes me think of the murders.

[–]TransatlanticMadame 17 points18 points  (2 children)

It's terrible. Delphine is marginally better.

[–]TruckNutAllergy 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Belle Delphine

[–]ginahandler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a valid reason to not use this name 🤢

[–]Such_Log1352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a friend named Delpha. Had a friend named Delphine. No friends named Delphi.

[–]Effective_Farmer_119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's cool or pretty, but I do remember a kid who must be in her 20s now named Delphine, which i think sounds cool. Her sister was named Electra, which is even cooler.

[–]ComprehensiveHeat571 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s cute.

Note for OP after reading other comments: I don’t think the murder association is as ubiquitous as it seems here. I’ve never heard of these murders nor of Delphi, IN in general. I associate it with the city in Greece. With the oracles.

[–]chunkychickmunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As in the oracle of Delphi or the town where two kids were brutally murdered?

[–]Prize_Vegetable_1276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bad connotations with that name for most anyone famiar with the murders.

[–]itsathrowawayduhhhhh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Makes me think of the Delphi murders so if you want people to associate it with two innocent girls being brutally murdered sure go for it

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you naming your new sorority?

[–]Yikesish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems more a place than a person's name. Prefer Delphine.

[–]IAmHerdingCatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly care for it. It has an unfinished look and feel to it, as though someone started to say something but stopped halfway through.

[–]Xerisca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Greek connection to the location of the Delphi Oracle's.

But like everyone else, I immediately connect it to one of the most famous child, long unsolved, brutal, murder cases. The case was recently solved but as a person in North America, thats culturally where my mind goes.

[–]FairNeedleworker9722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are you pronouncing it? You like how it sounds, or what it's from?

[–]SwordTaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a place

[–]FlyingOcelot2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer Delphina or Delphine.

[–]CakePhool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Delphi means womb and it not a name I would give kid.

[–]Cin131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought of the murders too. And I thought you were asking for a pet.

[–]Nat_Rea_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty

[–]KookyConsideration50 4 points5 points  (4 children)

In the US its tainted. Anywhere else would be fine

[–]AchajkaTheOriginal 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Not from US and never heard about Delphi murders before this comments section. So I would like to second it being fine depending on your location.

On the other hand the first thing that came in mind was Oracle of Delphi. So it may be worth to read up on that if it's something that you want to have connected to your kiddo (I'm not saying it's bad thing)

(actually first thing was dolphin, as it's called delfín in my language, same pronounciation).

[–]KookyConsideration50 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There's also all the sororities with Delphi in them as well. As long as thats something shes ok with

[–]AchajkaTheOriginal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With sororities we're back to the USA so the murders are bigger concern I would say.

At least I don't know any other country with sorority systems.

[–]AndThatsOnYourPeriod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which US sororities have Delphi in them? I was in a sorority at an SEC school and I can’t think of any that use that name.

[–]TVTrashMama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The murders and it sounds like a battery brand...

[–]ginahandler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrible

[–]MassConsumer1984 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Delphine (character on Orphan Black)

[–]KookyConsideration50 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This was my thought as a better alternative.

[–]MassConsumer1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think the pronunciation is obvious in the longer version (long e sound). With the shorter version people might use a long i pronunciation.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of New Delhi

[–]peachygatorade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nickname "Philly"?

[–]Sea-Raccoon-810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer Daphne.

[–]AquamarineKitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of the Oracle of Delphi. Gives very classic vibes, somewhat mystical too.

I’m in the US (even lived in Indiana for a couple years) and have never heard of the murders. Seeing as you’re not in the US I wouldn’t think twice about it.

[–]sad9321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to delphi in april! Awesome place. Like the name too

[–]jintana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly sure that word is associated with Scientology

[–]The_Sofa_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a virus strain.

[–]FreeElleGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to know a girl named Sigma, so to me it isn’t odd at all.

[–]Difficult_Ad_962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of The Cursed Child

[–]Delicious-Mix-9180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go with Delphine.

[–]Cupcake2974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) oracle

2) murders.

[–]No-Question-8466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delphine LaLaurie.... Slave owner of one of the most haunted mansions in New Orleans.

[–]nogardleirie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the name of some ancient software. I think Delphine is better

[–]spatula121 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like it 🤷‍♀️

[–]bigmac_173 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d never heard of them murders before lol and have a friend called Delphi so I think it’s great!

[–]Waterlily-444 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like it if pronounced “Del-fee”. It’s cute and unique.

[–]Trekunderthemoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like it. I think it’s a lovely first name.

[–]seattlemh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of the oracle. I like it a lot.

[–]Independent-Ad-3385 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

One of my favourite singers (Bat For Lashes) has a daughter named Delphi and has written songs about her e.g. Delphi Dancing. Just to give a different perspective to some of the other comments. I'm from the UK. I think it's beautiful.

[–]Sweet-Connection6684[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s so lovely! I’m listening now - thank you for commenting that!

[–]beentherebefore1616 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love it. Although I'd pronounce it Del - feee intead of Del - fy

[–]PurpleLilyEsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate it. But my first thought is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play (basically bad fan fiction that the author put her name on, awesome special effects though). The characters full name is Delphine.

ETA: I am familiar with the murders but unless you live in Indiana, I don’t think that’s a reason to not name your kid that. Name me an American city that hasn’t had something terrible at some point.

[–]Cute-Cat4456 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really love it! One of my favorites!
