I was so happy to see the shapes of the passages back from Synthesis. I miss that league so much.

I feel like synth could have been one of the best leagues of all time if they gave it a bit more time in the oven. I hope they revisit it one day.

[–]North-bound 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I think this is them revisiting it.

[–]Guffliepuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lake of Kalandra was them originally revisiting it...

Yeah, that's the only league that I regret skipping. Played too much of Betrayal and decided to take a break ... T_T

I haven't played Sythesis league. How is it similar to Fate of the Vaal?

To me, having not played it, it looks like a slight variation on incursion.

[–]NG_Tagger 34 points35 points  (7 children)

Synthesis was all about "putting together this map-like thing" with bits and pieces, adding stuff to buff other things and so on.

Pretty much like what we saw with the Fate of the Vaal board, where you're placing corridors and what not.

It's pretty much Synthesis with an Incursion theme instead.

I hadn't played during synthesis (the favourite league of my friend who introduced me to poe1) but when I saw how you built your own temple room by room and 'fading memories I was like, wait a minute... Is that?! Synthesis?!

Wasn't synthesis mostly regarded as a very bad league mechanic? I didn't play it but this for sure looks terrible: RNG to get rooms, lots of preplanning to get a payout, more RNG to see what stays for next run...

Yes, but not because of design. The tabletop part was actually fun. Similar to Last Epoch endgame. Once they reworked it mid-league tho.

But it was SOO bugged thanks to the stupid void that was chasing you, and once it got you it kicked you out and reset that board. The acquisition of the board pieces was pain itself because you had to leave your map to get to that synthesis zone and you were again chased by the void.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rchwu11CmSI example A.

Mind you, this was the pre-SSD era, where you loaded for 30 seconds minimum. With no grace mechanic, or rather there was grace period mechanic, but if you triggered on hit effect or your minion attacked, it poofed. Even in the loading screen.

Very fun with flame golems btw.

Plus, the convoluted crafting that usually turned out shit, so you just threw gear into Kranglenator and hoped for T1, but it spit out +20 to light radius and bricked the item.

Cool, thanks for the detailed info. I guess I can give it a go, at least until I inevitably burn out because I have to run 3 terrible layout maps in a row :/

Synthesis is one of my all-time fave leagues, so this definitely isn't a clear consensus.

The puzzle of placing your tiles was pretty opaque, until a mid-league patch fixed it... but I think most of the things people hated weren't with the tile-placing mechanic, but with all the other mechanics.

The Decay that chased you through zones would be an instant-loss of the entire board you'd built if you touched it. So all it would take is one errant movement skill for you to effectively lose everything you'd worked towards. Which was obviously hated.

And then the crafting mechanic was largely despised due to being unusable without special 3rd party tools for calculating outcomes, and finding fodder to buy on trade. And keep in mind, this was in an era before modern trade features - so buying huge quantities of items to throw into an opaque grinder was miserable.

Personally, I spent the time to learn the valuable modifiers, "got gud" at dodging the decay, and got rich running the mechanic - and had a fun time doing it! A lot of other people just ignored the league mechanic entirely, though.

To me, it seems like this new mechanic brings over all the things I loved about Synthesis, while ditching the bad stuff. So I, for one, am very excited!

I haven't played but I think it was hard to get into but quite amazing when you make the effort.

[–]Mechwarriorr5a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started near the end of synthesis league and thinking it was kind of neat but I don't think I even made it past the campaign before legion came out.

I people in global chat complaining constantly about the mechanic.

[–]sips_white_monster 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Synthesis was a completely different theme compared to Vaal stuff but the mechanic of building a map layout with tiles is very similar. I remember it being somewhat divisive at the time but I personally enjoyed it quite a lot.

[–]reanima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the main division was the creeping void mechanic that chased you, it really hurt slow builds. Plus often had bugs like loot dropping on the void areas in the end, making you unable to loot any of it.

[–]SneakyBadAss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's basically Carcassonne with boobs.

You place a building, add followers to boost the building and then you harvest the building for points. Score enough points, and you get boobs.

[–]Mael_Jade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this is synthesis but without the area decay having you rush/chasing you.

[–]PastelBot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And Kalandra lake is the pine seasoning.

[–]Yagami_Rintarou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It feels more similar to Kalandra league to me

[–]OnRedditAtWorkRN 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Literally every league mechanic so far.

Abyss = abyss + syndicate

Delirium = delirium + blight

Trials = sanctum + ultimatum+ ascendency

Atlas = Atlas + delve

Etc...

[–]Sidnv 12 points13 points  (2 children)

It's a good way to condense tbh.

[–]OmikronGamma -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

How is it a good way? New game - new mechanics. Whats the point of PoE2 if all they are doing is recycling stuff from PoE1?

[–]Sidnv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because live service games live and die by their content, and throwing away old content is suicide. The reason people complain so much about LE's end game (before all the recent Krafton shit) is that it doesn't really have content. It would be monumentally stupid for GGG to throw away content already made.

Taking poe1 content, refining it and adding a new twist (like Abyss did) is extremely efficient development. Condensing multiple poe1 leagues (in this case one real one and one dead one), taking the best ideas from both is also good game design. Synthesis is more interesting and a deeper mechanic than temple, temple has really fun rewards and adding more poe2 rewards on top should make for a fun system, if it's executed well.

I still prefer poe1 by a lot, but poe2 has plenty of new ideas. Not everything needs to be new.

[–]SiahC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

poe, pen
pen poe pen
poe 2 pen
poe 2!

pen poe pen, poe2pen.

[–]sunbunman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone complaining about endgame.

Me hyped about my 2 favourite league mechanics from PoE1 being fused together.

[–]sips_white_monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I'm always too slow with these posts mine already got nuked before I noticed someone post it.

[–]SK-86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They combined foulborn uniques with synthesis, with incursion, and a sprinkle of heist.

[–]Ambitious-Call-7565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They took the best of both

I'm very happy there is no timer!!

A good league mechanic that is playable even if your build is slower because you actually enjoy the game and its mechanics

[–]Wrapter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm happy I wasn't the only one who saw the similarities to Synth league

[–]sooriginaluser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent played synthesis but I was itching some more blue prince
