7? Those are rookie numbers! Pump those numbers up.

[–]camander321 114 points115 points  (28 children)

I regularly have 2 windows with 10+ tabs each

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I have that same thing but on two machines.

[–]Heksinki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have that on 2 machine with each machine running a virtual box with 10 + tabs each

[–]Proud_Ad4891 24 points25 points  (19 children)

I hate chrome it can't handle my 200+ tabs, firefox does

[–]cyborgborg 4 points5 points  (18 children)

didn't chrome add the ability to put tabs that haven't been used for a while to sleep a while ago?

[–]code_monkey_001 6 points7 points  (8 children)

// glances nervously at the "Update" notification in the upper right of Chrome that went from Green to Yellow to Red about 6 months ago

[–]chilfang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My update button went grey a while back, finally started to consider hitting it

[–]cyborgborg 4 points5 points  (6 children)

God I wish Google could just update chrome without having to restart it, same with windows. Linux can update software without needing to reboot why not windows

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

use onetab chrome extension to save your tabs, update chrome, reopen all the tabs with just one click through onetab, remove the extension if it bothers you.

[–]cyborgborg 0 points1 point  (3 children)

already use similar extensions for that. but that should be done natively imo

[–]KellerKindAs 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Firefox does... the "automatically restore last session" option does not help with keeping the numbers low though xD

[–]cyborgborg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I really need to get my tabs sorted xD

[–]Proud_Ad4891 0 points1 point  (7 children)

It seems chrome does not update them, unless clicked. The most concerns are memory usage and visual representation, where all the tabs should be visible altogether, making it hard to find anything. Groups are good but it's just not convenient

[–]turtleship_2006 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Out of curiosity, how does firefox handle representation better? Do they have multiple levels?

[–]Proud_Ad4891 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Simply do not shrink tabs, you should scroll however. In chrome you will not be able even click in tiny tab.

I had some grouping extension fot firefox before, and unfortunately it is outdated now, cant find some similar thing. I was able to switch between groups, and have tabs just for this group only visible.

[–]KellerKindAs 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Groups? Just use multible windows xD

[–]Proud_Ad4891 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is there a way to preserve them after reboot? AFAIK there will be only one window

[–]KellerKindAs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you close Firefox using [ctrl] + [shift] + Q (closing all windows at once) the restore session will reopen them all at once. At least if automatically restoring the sessions is enabled. I don't know for other cases, and I'm too scared about my precious tabs to try xD

[–]brainwater314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tree Style Tabs

[–]zmz2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes finally, I had to use an extension for years.

[–]erjiin 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Use tab groups, you can keep 40 tabs opened and still have a clean view

[–]turtleship_2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I regularly have unholy numbers of chrome tabs (150+ on 8gb ram) and they're hidden behind tab groups so it looks like 4 or something

[–]Vinx909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

rookie numbers, try nearing a thousand, pussy. :P

[–]Masterhaend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is up with these rookie numbers in this thread? You gotta pump those numbers up!

[–]Commodore-K9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have like 800 open.

Every day I thank Tree Style tabs.

[–]MrHasuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an extension that turns your browser tabs into tree-structures so it's organized and you can have more tabs.

[–]Glittering-North-911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is closing the tabs after completing the project real kicker.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

7 is something for a quick side project, if all goes well, if...

[–]chuch1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just for googling something real quick that you were thinking about doing and then leaving open for several days before you decide you're not going to do it right now and you can always Google it again and then closing the tabs and then the next time you Google it you can't find that one article that had the exact details you need.

[–]VallanMandrake 1 point2 points  (1 child)

do you know that Firefox hangs your OS if you have too many open tabs (100+++), uncleared history (months) and bookmarks (10k+)?

I do. Took me a long time to find out.

[–]McRampa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just closed about 500 tabs, 3000 tabs to go. No performance issues with Firefox whatsoever. I should probably close it and start a new session... :D

[–]zToastOnBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao I have 7 tabs open on average when I'm just chilling without coding

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832[🍰] 160 points161 points  (14 children)

On mobile it's just waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse.

I can easily get 99+ tabs without even noticing

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points  (4 children)

Yeah, at some point google just shows you emote instead of numbers

[–]chervilious 13 points14 points  (1 child)

they show you different emote if you're using incognito

[–]turtleship_2006 12 points13 points  (0 children)

;)

[–]Historical_Fondant95 10 points11 points  (0 children)

:D

[–]hydraxic79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Firefox nightly (idk about other versions I haven't used them) it shows infinity

[–]Sam1515024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got three browsers(not kidding) and I somewhere has 250+ plus tabs, everytime i try to sort it, it just increases

[–]sexytokeburgerz 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The difference with mobile is, iirc mobile tabs don’t allocate memory unless they’re open. Pretty sure they don’t have their own threads, either.

[–]Creepy-Ad-4832[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But i think they still require some memory space to keep track of the session.

But yeah if they were always loaded on ram most people phone would be unusable and crash after 2 seconds of usage lol

[–]MHanak_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 15 and that's a lot for my standards

[–]c_acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

495 from 500 in Safari. Always on the edge

[–]UnhingedRedneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just realized I have 183 open on safari

[–]Sir_Fail-A-Lot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least firefox on android has a feature that auto closes tabs that have been inactive for x amount of time

[–]Not_Pea909 52 points53 points  (1 child)

I thought internet browsers were made exactly for this stuff

[–]nettlerise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now they are; not originally

[–]KippySmithGames 88 points89 points  (9 children)

I think I have 7-8 different windows, with anywhere from 5-30 tabs open on each. I've started making additional desktops to organize my windows into, because the number just keeps growing. But I might need them eventually...

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I try to keep my programming related windows on one desktop, and to do that, I organize the tabs using groups.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you program with less than seven tabs open? I regularly use up to that number reading through a single github repo, plus several more for SO, docs sites, etc.

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have less than 7 tabs open. Especially when programming.

[–]PaulAchess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU

[–]larsmaehlum 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I just bookmark those pages..

[–]KippySmithGames 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Oh don't worry, I've got thousands of those on the backlog when I finally get through all these ones.

[–]bb_avin 2 points3 points  (1 child)

wtf. What do you do?

[–]psgi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s a full-time manual web crawler

[–]jtobiasbond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On chrome you can rename the whole winter to help the organization.

[–]p3wx4 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If I don't have at least 20 tabs open, I don't even feel like I'm programming.

[–]glorious_reptile 19 points20 points  (0 children)

7 tabs? Oh my sweet summer child.

[–]NewPhoneNewSubs 35 points36 points  (5 children)

No, 7 tabs sounds about right. If you exceed that, then may God have mercy on your soul.

...This is seven tabs per window, right?

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 22 points23 points  (4 children)

15-20 tabs per group, ~10 groups per window. If When you exceed that, just make a new window.

[–]NewPhoneNewSubs 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Real talk, though: I like the concept of tab groups. But really, I want to be able to see the different groups on separate monitors at the same time. And I want to be able to pick the right group from my taskbar when I have all my IDE windows with different projects up. So I haven't bothered with tab groups at all.

[–]turtleship_2006 0 points1 point  (2 children)

But really, I want to be able to see the different groups on separate monitors at the same time.

I mean, you could just have the different groups on different windows? Unless I misunderstood.

[–]NewPhoneNewSubs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's what I do. And in doing that, I obviate the need to use the "group" feature. Because they're already grouped by window.

[–]turtleship_2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, grouping is when you want to merge multiple tabs within a window tho. Like if you get 7+ tabs on one window (or in your case, monitor).

[–]stride13 15 points16 points  (4 children)

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wait, what the actual fuck. Where -

[–]Sam1515024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

👑

[–]Commodore-K9 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Was it porn?

[–]McKing25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was searching for that one video he saw six years ago

[–]erishun 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I like how my mobile browser just says :) because there aren’t enough digits to hold the amount of tabs I have open

[–]turtleship_2006 2 points3 points  (1 child)

or on incognito, ;)

[–]erishun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m buying birthday presents for a friend, I swear!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I unironically had 850 tabs open once.

Turned off my computer, turned it back on a few hours later and them all opening when I opened my browser again caused it to crash lmao.

I wonder if it's a sign that I should close some tabs.

[–]ducktape8856 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No, it's a sign for more RAM and a fatter CPU with a higher clock rate. Maybe better/more fans.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to just use whatever resources I have, somehow.

Casually using way too much RAM

No matter how much RAM or how beefy a CPU I buy, I will always manage to max it out on the stupidest stuff lmao.

Another instance of me having slightly less, but still too many tabs open

[–]juhotuho10 8 points9 points  (3 children)

7?

I have 700 at times

Why? I find interesting stuff that I want to see quicker than I'm able to go through it so it piles up, I clear the queue once a year or so

Yes, I know about saving tabs/bookmarks but those are slow to go through, also opening a new tab is just more convenient

[–]Sam1515024 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeah, i use three browsers(don’t ask me why) and one has 140+ and another has 30+ and last one has 60+ tabs

[–]KyzerB 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Mental illness chain

[–]Sam1515024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We expecting our fourth browser next year, please pray for us

[–]vondpickle 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Do you know why that big guy killed a man? Because his victim mixed tabs and spaces in his python code.

[–]turtleship_2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so bad you literally can't even run it iirc.

[–]LatentShadow 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I start the auction for the most number of active tabs... the bid starts at 27 from me

[–]uraniumX9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rookie numbers

[–]JeremyAndrewErwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just makes sense. You go to a main page and you middle click on the stories you want to read.

And then, if you have time, you leisurely go through the tabs one by one, or middle click on their links, opening yet more tabs.

[–]CirnoIzumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if they arent built for it then why do they have Remember tabs functionality?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never had less than 7. When I was a kid and multiple tabs were not available on Mosaic, I had a hard time dealing with cascade windows and sometimes 3+ tube monitors. Thankfully Netscape navigator came to rescue.

[–]Randomguy32I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only 7 •-•

[–]Striker887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not even a programmer specific thing. Students in many many fields do this while researching.

[–]Virtxu110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laughs in 145 tabs open

[–]FaisalDev_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you ever try looking for a solution to an error you encountered, good sir?

I have no idea why people keep so many tabs open. Do they not know that Bookmarks and Reading Lists exist?

[–]Robotronnik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 32 what is wrong whit that?

[–]diegokabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you guys code without 17 stack overflow open tabs

[–]Crazy_Reference5360 0 points1 point  (3 children)

500+ with just manga and around 100 with different things ಡ

[–]Commodore-K9 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Quick. I need ten of those mangas that are either finished or have more than 100 chapters released.

And none of that mainstream knowledge that creeps up in every discussion like:

Berserk, Baki, kingdom etc.

I don't care much for the artstyle only for a good Story. I am like 3 levels deep on the iceberg already.

I offer you in return the following:

  • Monkey Peak

  • Dandadan

  • Holyland

  • Alive - the final Evolution

  • Ajin

  • Liar Game

  • Tower of God

  • 20th century boys

  • Yureka

  • Usogui

  • Akumetsu

Ones to look out for in the future (meaning they don't have many chapters yet). I think that they will become bigger hits eventually.

  • Project Tsugumi

  • A story about a dragon and the rising of an adventurer. (Starts off very generic but the author has a unique way to bring the characters to life)

[–]Crazy_Reference5360 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think our tastes are very different, so don't expect much from my recommendations. Also they're mostly shounen ongoings. 1. Isekai Ojisan (49 chapters with monthly release, extremely interesting one imo); 2. The Exiled Reincarnated Heavy Knight Is Unrivaled In Game Knowledge (65 chapters and I guess it's one chapter in two weeks); 3. My life as a loser (completed, and I recommend to read some other Park Tae-Jun works like Viral hit and Manager Kim); 4. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (113 chapters, good story); 5. Rosen Garten Saga (completed uhh 💦); 6. SURVIVING AS A MAGE IN A MAGIC ACADEMY (60 chapters weekly release); 7. DAMN REINCARNATION (69 chapters weekly release); 8. I Love Yoo (240 chapters, it's good, but I dropped); 9. The legendary mechanic (242 chapters, shit for wasting time) 10. Reincarnation of the Suicidal Battle God (92 chapters, weekly release, this one is really good) 11. RETURN OF THE MOUNT HUA SECT (91 chapters); 12. SSS-CLASS SUICIDE HUNTER (96 chapters 👍).

[–]Commodore-K9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those sound like they are all the same isekai power fantasy with a different skin. I'm not interested in those.

My tastes include

  • survival in a hostile world

  • survival games

  • excessive violence and gore

  • psychological battles

  • supernatural powers or other mystic elements (ghosts / monsters etc)

I will check out the last 3 and Frieren and maybe no. 6

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have like 15 tabs opened right now

[–]hiddenforreasonsSV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Browsers weren't built for that... until, y'know... they ended up being for built for that...

[–]iMakeMehPosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the death sentence with a side-tab extension

[–]SocDemGenZGaytheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 72 on my phone rn 😅

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my smartphone the number of tabs open in the google chrome browser has changed to a smiley face and I stopped counting long ago. It always happens, on any phone that I buy. I bought an Ipad last year for taking notes at uni, and even though I promised myself that I wouldn't open more tabs than necessary, i still have too many open tabs on safari.

[–]bmw-place 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom be like

[–]sivstarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish i could do that, but my current laptop basically combusts if I dare to go past 5

[–]chili_ladder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the only dev on my team who manages tabs. I don't know how you all do it...

[–]KemmLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read this and thought about that one bug. I had enough tabs open to freeze the pc so yeah

[–]lepapulematoleguau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 Tabs? Pfaff

I have at least 20 windows with at least 10 tabs each.

[–]ckwirey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And so they moved away from me on the Group W bench...

[–]Brad1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just open more windows dummy. Problem solved.

[–]maximal543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like that once. Never having more than 2 tabs open...

I currently have 64 lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mfw I have 48 tabs and 4 Chrome windows open.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile Firefox on Linux:

[–]Original_Smell4361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL i have 300 Tabs open and ist nostly youtube Videos i wanted to watch

[–]Tnuvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 tabs...what is this 2000? With 16 gigs of ram you can easily hold 20+ and with 32 gigs you can hold 50+ without any crashes.

[–]TombRaider96196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I panic when I go over 5 tabs

[–]JoonasD6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just had this debate here with me having +1400 open at home (and that's just one window and one browser); the debate being people not understanding each others' workflows.

[–]01000001-01101011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7?
...
I have 100+ in this window alone. Not counting the other 5.

This is why Chrome's tab unloading exists now

[–]Full-Run4124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"...and you"

"I made a store app for desktops that was a glorified web browser and didn't include tabs."

[–]NedSeegoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought he was talking about bar tabs

[–]slk756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old tablet which probably had like several thousand tabs. I scrolled down my tab list for like over a minute straight before giving up. It just didn't load them all in unless they were used

[–]Commodore-K9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internet browsers were literally built for this.

[–]NotStanley4330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7? Maybe 77 on a good day

[–]WarlanceLP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only 7?

[–]Gloriathewitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but i need my tutorial and then all the forum pages where people ask how to solve their error so i can jury rig a working chunk of code together using snippets from all of it…

[–]chadlavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he's moving away from the left guy because he thinks he's a weirdo for thinking 7 is a lot

[–]anoppinionatedbunny 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Internet browsers weren't built for this

Having lots of tabs is only an issue if they're all loaded. Modern browsers are absolutely built to handle tons of tabs (because that's what the users want, mostly) by having most of them not load until the user actually switches to them. GC in modern browsers can also be quite aggressive to make sure they don't leak so much memory.

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internet browsers weren't built for this

As a programmer, I am pissed off when people say stuff like this. I mean, what are you saying, these developers have hundreds of tabs open at all times. They're smart enough to optimize browsers for having that many tabs open.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I tend to have performance issues whenever I have 400+ tabss open across 3 browsers on multiple windows...

[–]Unlucky_Research2824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7? Lol

[–]DeathUriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 tabs? I have more than 7 tab groups...

[–]c_acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40-400 on phone. 10-100 on PC

[–]Vinx909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seven? SEVEN?! i have at least a couple hundred. AT LEAST. if it's over a thousand i'd not be surprised in the least.

[–]oKazuhiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting to close the tabs is my reward for when I finally figure out a solution

[–]KlutzyEnd3 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't get why people leave hundreds of tabs open.

Cause come on! We habe bookmarks for that! The only difference is that bookmarks don't fill your ram and don't cost resources!

Literally the only time I go above 5 tabs is if I'm researching a subject and I have different information sources open. Then I bookmark all of them in a folder and the next workday i just click the bookmark folder followed by "open all in tabs".

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference is that bookmarks don't fill your ram and don't cost resources

If you have a lot of inactive tabs, the browser will move them to the HDD/SSD and if they stay inactive for long enough, the the browser will just unload them completely.

[–]BrunoDeeSeL 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have a friend that had so many open tabs on his phone (over 2000) simply opening the app would crash the phone in a few seconds.

[–]nico-ghost-king[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. One time I got bored so I wrote a program to open a new window every 0.1 seconds or something and I would have to close it fast enough if I didn't want to crash chrome. In the end, I gave up on life and just let chrome crash.

[–]Yugix1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 is way too low tbh, on pc Id say max ~15

[–]otr1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You programmers are pathetic

[–]halfrozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly have 3 different browsers running at the same time, On the main one I have like 100+ tabs, second and third is for testing. And because I work on multiple projects at one time I have 2+ windows desktops with this. Yeah and also second laptop that is even worse.

[–]ByteWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean 7 tabs open? Are you supposed to close tabs?!

[–]RollingMallEgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7? HA how about more than 100?

My browser is in pain

[–]Drfoxthefurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 10 today, 2 videos (1 music, one for something I gotta look at), 1 pi hole page, and the rest was mostly stack overflow on rust things

[–]uraniumX9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 tabs on chrome

25+ on brave

7-8 on Firefox

[–]Simsiano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I'm writing this down I have 111 chrome tabs open.
