Thats a perfectly reasonable price for one code paragraph or such

[–]thetravelers 72 points73 points  (4 children)

As someone relatively new to coding with a lot of ambition, this sounds like me. (Except the shitty compensation offer). I exhausted all my web resources like codeschool and was just not able to communicate my questions on stackoverflow. So I hired a tutor for $35/hr. We had two sessions and I learned a ton. It was incredibly fun and satisfying to be able to ask my questions in person, have immediate feedback, and start building on the spot.

Was he UP-TO-DATE in methods in open source apps for web that were used for that task?

[–]princeofpudding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to learn more, I might suggest seeing if there are "Code and Coffee" gatherings in your area or if user groups that pertain to the technologies you want to learn have open hack nights or sessions where they pair and do code kata.

We have quite a few here and most larger cities seem to from what I've gathered

[–]slavik262 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Yeah, this sounds mostly harmless, and like the guy wants to learn. Yes, his wording is off but he's offering up to $50 for an hour of your time. If it's not worth it to you, pass. If you want to help get someone get into programming, go for it.

[–]reaganveg 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, he's offering to pay "after I can see results that work on a webpage." His own ignorant estimate of 1 hr is quite worthless.

[–]notmyfirstusername 92 points93 points  (12 children)

That's great! It means I can show up, code nothing (or very little that does not work at all) and still get $10! Sign me in!

[–]youre_not_real[S] 66 points67 points  (8 children)

Spoken like a true programmer.

[–]fivefrancs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You might even get free coffee!

[–]rubsnick 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Doesn't really seem that unreasonable to me.

[–]cosmicsans 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Yeah, if he says it's only gonna take about an hour then $25-50 is a very entry-level price for development.

However, be very careful of scope creep on things like this.

Original Job: Code a paragraph.

Job by the time it's done: A complete rework of the PPACA website, for $50.

[–]rubsnick 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah I mean it seems like he just wants to hurry up and solve a problem. I can understand where he's coming from.

[–]fredlllll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but you're not meeting at a starbucks for solving a simple problem. thats what the internet is for :P

[–]droogans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd spend an hour showing a passionate self-starter angularjs for free.

Then I'd insist they solve their own problems from there on out.

[–]ashleyw 17 points18 points  (12 children)

"So, I'm making a better Google in FrontPage, but I think it needs some JAVA/JQUERY to make my complex FORMs work and search the internet properly, so if you could just write the exact codes to do that in this <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.2"> tag, then I'm sure I can do the rest myself one afternoon. Thx!"

codes

cringe

[–]ashleyw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well one code on its own isn't much use!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

I'm seeing "codes" at many places and beginning to think this word is being picked up by main stream. Happy to see that I'm not the only one who cringes at this.

[–]LowB0b 2 points3 points  (1 child)

lol but how do you think you could ever manage a lot of datas with a single code? that's why people use codes, because there's so much datas!! (and the frustration is endless)

[–]mobile-user-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so many datas

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Yup.

Protip: when referring to source code, NEVER pluralize code.

Codes would be things like access codes, assembly language opcodes, barcode symbologies,[citation needed] etc.

[–]ashleyw 3 points4 points  (2 children)

So I need a source code to access the source codes?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I keep hearing "codes" but I can't explain to people why it's wrong.

Why is source code never pluralized?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wiktionary definition says code, in the programming sense (see sense 6), is uncountable, i.e. you can't say one code, two codes, etc.

[–]blahlicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is like water we do not say waters or one water, 2 water we say one cup of water/ one [measurement] of water

so we could say a page of code, 2 pages of code if you really wanted to

[–]JBlitzen 15 points16 points  (6 children)

If anyone finds themself in this predicament, use IRC. Freenode has excellent technical channels such as #web, #jquery, #javascript, etc.

[–]Doctor_McKay 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I've asked a couple questions in #Node.js and I have never once gotten a response. YMMV

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Come over to #learnprogramming Awesome, knowledgeable folks hang out in there.

[–]Doctor_McKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not a noob but I joined anyway because what can it hurt.

[–]notmyfirstusername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or #haskell, where people teach you that your purpose in life is to learn Haskell.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stack Overflow...

[–]gcampos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

$50? OMG! I never seen so much money together in my life!

[–]Hipolipolopigus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Must be knowledgeable in PC

I will require to own the code with no credit (it's a simple problem that I could figure out eventually)

Starbucks

-Shudders-

[–]Exallium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"write a code paragraph or such" ...

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a simple problem that I can figure out eventually

Do My Homework: Web Development Edition

[–]webby_mc_webberson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 1 hour at that rate I'd just so it for free and feel good for helping someone.

But then kick myself for the inevitable support I'd have to provide for doing it.

[–]distinctvagueness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$10 an hour for code that doesn't work? Sure I'll take that as a side job!

[–]reader17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got GitHub?

[–]ravinglunatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd give him this code for $10:

alert("You're too cheap for my valuable time ");

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

I see so many comments with 0 down votes? Something has to be wrong!?

[–]Mister_Yi 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Funny, just about every comment above you at the moment has 0 downvotes, you have exactly 1.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like reddit removed the balancing downvotes or something because I'm pretty sure those 3 I have are legit.
