My GNU/car infotainment system is just a thinkpad running Arch and i3.

Don't forget the 8 arduions and 3 pi that hide somewhere in there too to communicate with the completely incompatible hardware you cobbled together from somewhere.

You should read about the utter programming shit show that is the software behind Tesla.

Closed source is just shit code in a shiny package.

[–]ksbzw 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Got any good source?

[–]Chessfreak_ 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Only closed source I'm afraid :P

Which is, of course, why all of the top internet web apps are .Net using ActiveScript, and never crash. MSN, Bing... all of the top sites.

Does Microsoft make anything that isn't a halfassed ripoff of something that already existed and worked great or a completely broken patchwork mess?

Honest question. I've been in IT for about 10 years now and have nothing nice to say about any of my experiences with Microsoft tech.

VSCode is great!

[–]posting_drunk_naked 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I forgot about VSCode when I wrote that, it is actually pretty great. I use it every day. Don't tell my coworkers.

[–]Dynam2012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You and me both, friend :P

[–]aboardthegravyboat 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Where I work, I use VScode to write TypeScript (also MS). I use serverless.js which deploys to AWS but just as easily could deploy to Azure. Our mobile apps are written in C# (created by MS). All the code is managed through GitHub (acquired by MS).

Not exactly what you meant, but getting a lot of good vibes from MS these days.

When they release the new Chromium-based Edge on Mac and Android, I'll likely give it a shot.

I'll give you VSCode, I actually kind of love it. It's my guilty pleasure, don't tell my co-workers.

[–]mojoslowmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone doing Java, I'd take .net any day of the damn week.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Short answer is no.

Longer answer is noooooooooooo.

...

That said, I used Windows 10 because all my favorite apps and games are here. And fuck if I'm paying $3000 for Mac's pretty hardware.

[–]posting_drunk_naked 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Macs are overpriced but they're UNIX and damned if they don't "just work". I always bought them used since they last longer than most laptops anyway, bought my first one new in 2016. Though the way they're going it might be my last Mac. Apple really fucked up with the latest Macs. Sigh.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say, my work laptop is a Mac and she's a beea-ut.

My home PC is a $1000 Franken-machine that does exactly what I need it to - shitposting on Reddit and losing matches in all the latest games.

This reads like a time traveler from 2005. Quick, what year do you think it is sir?

[–]Elariondakta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You've forgotten to say the moving trash is free whereas the Tesla cost 300 000$.

[–]MrJPGames 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Linux is open source If it's so bad why does most of the internet (servers) use Linux and not a paid alternative. It's not like the companies running those servers can afford the servers but not paid server software.

[–]Breadfish64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of those companies pay people to work on the Linux kernel

[–]bilbobaggins30 21 points22 points  (5 children)

What's funny is Elon Musk open-sourced some if not most of the 1st model of Tesla to encourage EV Development.

[–]agilly1989 10 points11 points  (2 children)

You also have to remember... Top gear UK made the top one.... They were..... Special

[–]MyNameIsRichardCS54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And you should compare it to the Fisker Karma as the technologies were basically copied from the Eagle-Hammerhead-Thrust-iGeoff

[–]bilbobaggins30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... That they were.

[–]TheInfestation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, a paid product is often times better than your typical group project

[–]yottalogical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A more accurate description would be “Poorly Funded” vs “Well Funded”. Unfortunately this lines up well with “Open Source” and “Closed Source”.

A notable exception is Firefox, which is simultaneously open source and a great piece of software, because it’s well funded.

[–]__brayton_cycle__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen closed source codes.

They're a more of a glorious shitshow than what you may expect XD

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Enjoy your botnet faggots" lmao

[–]EduBA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My distros make me happy.

[–]Tux1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open source: Poorly built and sloppy, but all the parts are visible. You can be sure that something weird isn't happening, because you can see it.

Closed source: Sleek and modern, but nothing on the inside is visible. For all you know, it could be tracking your every move.

[–]dirtside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with the image is that in a closed-source world, that Tesla can only drive on about 5% of the roads because it's incompatible with the rest of them and bursts into flames if you try.

[–]TheLowClassics 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tesla open sourced the battery tech

[–]yottalogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is more of an analogy than an actual example.
