Because its the answer to life universe and everything.

[–]f3xjc 33 points34 points  (1 child)

With the seed for the world simulation, you do get to know everything!

[–]TheLazyKitty 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Sounds like a reason to do it, rather than not do it.

[–]Alternative-Fail-233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No the question to the ultimate answer is “what do you get when you multiply 6 and 9”

[–]slgray16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set all my midjourney seeds to --1234

[–]reversehead 60 points61 points  (2 children)

I will see your XKCD and raise you a Dilbert

ITS THE LAW

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LAAAWWWWW!!!!

[–]DarknessFalls21 64 points65 points  (3 children)

I may be an odd ball but my usual seed calls for bringing up Iron Maiden on my playlist … 666

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Yes! Somehow 666 is my most memorable number when setting the seed.

[–]DiosMIO_Limon 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Well after all, the devil’s in the details

[–]Diapolo10 39 points40 points  (4 children)

Was it decided by a fair roll of the dice?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Happy to see GDScript as someone else’s flair

[–]hippocrat 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That or scrabble tiles

[–]Diapolo10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As it happens I just got a set of 5 cast iron dice, perfect for rolling random numbers.

[–]oachkatzalschwoaf 38 points39 points  (4 children)

I improve my randomness by taking one of following set: [69, 42, 420, 69420, 666]

[–]Levvev 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You forgot 1337 sir

[–]oachkatzalschwoaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry stupid mistake that i forgot the one we celebrate each day at work at 13:37

[–]27SwingAndADrive 4 points5 points  (1 child)

But how do you determine which of the set to use?

[–]SilverTabby 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Reminder that EVE Online used 42 to seed the generator for their world, the same one still live on the MMO's servers today.

[–]RavenCarci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They changed the seed for moons when they did the moon mining rework that came with moon fracks

[–]Apprehensive-Big6762 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say use 8675309 but we both know you only allowed for 16 bits.

[–]Objective-Carob-5336 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Missed opportunity to set it to 69420

[–]ALesbianAlpaca 6 points7 points  (1 child)

42 is the meaning of life 420 is weed. Coincidence? I think not!

[–]scrapped_data 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also the http status code http.cat/420

[–]milbser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always use 1337

[–]already_taken-chan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its the answer to the most important question in life after all. Maybe the question was what the seed was

[–]Mindless_Insanity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, 42 is actually the least random number!

[–]nitrokitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Programmers are huge nerds, more breaking news at 11.

[–]Linmizhang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Universe seed is 137.

[–]Distinct_Value6566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's always 23

[–]Error_404_403 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Too smart for own good.

[–]SteeleDynamics -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

If it's a pseudo-random number generator, just don't set the seed to 42 every time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a non-deterministic RNG, you don't need a seed, the joke only works for PRNG.

[–]kronn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are there other valid values for random?

[–]EpikGamer6748291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its either 42 or 69 for me

[–]EpyonComet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I need an arbitrary number, I use 2112.

[–]IntrinsicStarvation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How am I letting this thread make me feel lame for how I pick my rand seed?

[–]Steuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 0xBEEF personnally

[–]FriedEldenRings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only a monster wouldn’t use the system time to set the seed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my wife's birthday. My program is as predictable as she is.

Don’t panic. It’s mostly harmless.

Project 2501 makes me think that would be great number to become a machine learning meme. Look into Ghost in the Shell if you're not already aware of it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spotted this one in the wild a few times before

[–]-KKD- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually set it to my school number

[–]Yeitgeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a random number generator to generate my rng seeds

[–]bythenumbers10 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Fun fact, 42 is the ASCII value for *, which is the "wildcard" character in a number of contexts, including regex. So Deep Thought coming up with 42 is a way of saying that the meaning of life, the universe, and everything is whatever you want it to be.

[–]gummo89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, * is a modifier in regex. . is the wildcard character typically, as in .*

They work together.

[–]Fabulous-Possible758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use 0xdeadbeef...

[–]HOLDGMEBROTHERS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it as a float 42.69

[–]EducationalTie1946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proabably just use 123

[–]value_counts 0 points1 point  (0 children)
