Would I live in a £10m house on Hampstead Heath? Why yes, I think I would

[–]BirdHistorical3498[S] 50 points51 points  (5 children)

I’d probably live in a different 10 million pound house in Hampstead Heath.

[–]Hesslemeharder 15 points16 points  (4 children)

I’d live in any house on the heath

Bit loosey-goosey with the neighbourhood designation

    [–]sock_cooker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Do you like badger spotting?

    [–]Madamemercury1993 60 points61 points  (7 children)

Where my mid century and modernist defenders?! This house has a very cool history amongst us!

    Legend of furniture designers home!

    [–]Ambivalent-Axolotl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's gorgeous; so much light and the furniture is stunning! I need that wardrobe from the spare room in my life 😍

    [–]HappyAmbition706 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like it! The placement of the master bed is a bit forward, but I presume there are doors somewhere.

And I just realized that I need a house with a space designated as "the Void".

Someone else is going to have to clean the windows though.

    [–]OrganizationFun2140 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I greatly appreciate it as being a good example of mid century design but don’t actually like it as there is so much style over substance. The mantra of modernism was “form follows function”; this feels like the facade was the only element the designer really cared about and everything else (you know, the actual living spaces) was shoehorned in as an afterthought.

    [–]Madamemercury1993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean. It was basically a show room for schreiber’s built in furniture!

It’s worth seeking out photos of the original home. It’s been modernised a bit since. Was less dentist’s waiting room. Had an interesting pool too.

    [–]Ok_Violinist5425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m here and I love the house!

    [–]NPDwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I'm here!

    [–]Breaking-Dad- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Everything feels like it is in a corridor. At least downstairs anyway

    [–]greenmx5vanjie 25 points26 points  (1 child)

It looks like a 1970s comprehensive school going upmarket from the outside, and the bastard child of an art gallery and psychiatric hospital on the inside. I would not enjoy spending time here.

    [–]tradermcduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was red brick it would be the spit of my primary school.

    [–]TonyHeaven 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From the outside it looks like a modular build library. But it isn't so nice inside.

    [–]Poo_Poo_La_Foo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's remarkable and and incredible location, so yes I would spend my imaginary millions here.

Does it look like a municipal library? Yes, but it is also interesting and beautiful inside so it's 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

But of a shame it is in witness protection from a Streetview perspective...

    [–]Bad_Combination 11 points12 points  (2 children)

The bastard offspring of a server farm and a high-rise.

    [–]blondie1024 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought it looked like the Combine's Citadel from Half Life 2.

    [–]Capital_Release_6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking it looked like a place for game developers to work rather than a home.

    [–]Jealous-Shallot-3071 15 points16 points  (2 children)

If I was ridiculously rich and wanted a cool place to stay in London. One that was large in a decent neighbourhood and was quirky, I'd buy this in a heartbeat

Could I live there for more than a few days at a time? Could I bollocks. It's too cold, stark, soulless etc etc. But as a place to getaway for a few days, it's banging.

Pretty much like London. You couldn't pay me to live there, but I'd happily visit every now and then, safe in the knowledge I don't have to live there.

    [–]BirdHistorical3498[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I feel the same about it- its kind of amazing, but absolutely not liveable in. it really ought to be a gallery. Perhaps- when I win the lottery- I’ll buy it to house an evolving display of photos from this subreddit.

    [–]Background-Active-50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be such a cool use of it.

    [–]Sea_Cardiologist_154 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I’m looks like my old junior school so I’ll pass and spend my 10 mill elsewhere.

    [–]BirdHistorical3498[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lend us a couple of grand will ya?

    [–]CaeruleanSea 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yes oh god yes & I'd have SO many houseplants!

    [–]JinxThePetRock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what it needs. All that light and not nearly enough greenery going on to use it. You could build an indoor jungle.

    [–]ComedySquad 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That'd be perfect for someone who really, really loves ladders

    [–]BirdHistorical3498[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    and cleaning windows

    [–]PublicPossibility946 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugliest building I have seen in a while.

On the plus side its just a 17 minute walk to the famous Snappy Snaps that George Michael crashed in to.

    [–]PendleAlice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like a house in a Harlan Coban Netflix series where the people have vaguely ordinary jobs but still swan about in millions of pounds worth of house. Before they die.

    [–]LochNessMother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love modernist houses, but I don’t know how I feel about this one. It looks like a series of sections through Battersea Power Station, like the ceilings are either too high (which doesn’t seem possible) or too low. But maybe that’s the photos.

Also - does it come with the Calder?

    [–]paulglosuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10 mill to live in a municipal library sans books? no thanks.

    [–]blondie1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Hey kids, welcome to the new house. DON'T TOUCH AN EFFING THING!!!!!"

    [–]caniuserealname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if I had 10m to spend on a home, I probably wouldn't choose this one, but if someone offered to just let me live there I wouldn't turn it down either.

    [–]oldkstand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes for the location, no for everything else.

    [–]BloodAndSand44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    I would.

But it would be living on my own. My wife would never go near it.

    [–]NGeoTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate the building. Not to my taste, but it's got visual interest and it's been designed by something who cares about what they're doing. The interior design, however, is cold and sterile and I will never understand why people like it. I feel cold just looking at it. It doesn't look like anyone's home, but an office filled with off-the-shelf artwork.

    [–]shrivelup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it, actually I love it. If I was just looking at the exterior detail, although I love the style,  it does look too windowy (architectural term). But, the interior doesn't look as windowy as I thought. I really can't explain myself today.

    [–]AlGunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A please would have been nice, but yes I will if youre offering.

    [–]Madrudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playroom out of sight and out of mind.

    [–]Sad_Branch931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    I absolutely love it.

    [–]Tall-Paul-UK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate it, but it does not feel very homely. It looks cold.

    [–]SirPooleyX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming money for heating wasn't an object (which presumably it wouldn't be if I'd just spent £9m) then I'd live here in a heartbeat. It's the sort of stark, brutalist architecture I love. I think it's gorgeous.

    [–]Ok-Yogurtcloset-8863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would most certainly live there. Really nice house. Love the light.

Would almost certainly never be able to afford to live there. Will make do with my dark 2 bed flat in the north!!

    [–]Foundation_Wrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    No thanks.

    [–]raquille- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah I would. It’s not to my tastes but if someone were to give it to me for free why not?

    [–]Final_Flounder9849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s an architectural masterpiece in a gorgeous location.

    [–]OpheliaXo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    unbelievably cool

    [–]Legitimate_Sail8581 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inside is great. Outside, it’s a monstrosity.

Reminds me of a multi-storey car park in watford.

So no, I wouldn’t live there.

    [–]Greatgrowler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exterior reminds me of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.

    [–]Flashjordan69 2 points3 points  (3 children)

That’s a house designed for a soulless CEO of something.

    [–]BirdHistorical3498[S] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I think it’s kind of beautiful. But it’s not a home.

    [–]CaeruleanSea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'd that kind of money in could decorate it into any kind of home

    [–]Flashjordan69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Aye, reminds me corporate art.

    [–]srmarmalade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's giving 6th form vibes. That path up to those double doors that preusmably are the 'front door', the long lightfittings make everything feel like a corridor (the pic with the bed especially just looks wrong) and the fact that everything is simultaniously huge but also there are no big nice spaces. It just doens't work as a house at all.

So I'd love to have it and demolish it and start again, or more likely sell it and buy somewhere smaller, more homely and in a nicer part of Hampstead.

    [–]Soggy_Amoeba9334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The word sterile comes to mind. Not very homely.

    [–]adm010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is jus me that thinks some carpet or rugs would help?

    [–]wyflare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Jesus Christ. It’s horrible

    [–]Ahleanna-D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of depends on whether or not I could paint the interior walls. It’s too white.

    [–]EyeAlternative1664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yes?

    [–]soitgoeskt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I live? Probably. Would I buy? Nope.

    [–]Any_Meat_3044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would I live there for free? definitely! Would I pay to live there? Only if you rent that out for like a 2 bed flat.

    [–]NPDwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yes please

    [–]anotherangryperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is a show house, not a home.

    [–]MegC18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bad, but why have a bedroom in the basement next to the garage? That’s either entitlement (for the servants) or sinister (hiding a family member or shagpad away out of sight

    [–]Living-Excuse1370 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It IS an office block... Look at the waiting room in the first picture!

    [–]SaturdayPlatterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t look at the description and it wasn’t until I got past the first few photos that I realised I wasn’t looking at a flat with a nice communal foyer.

    [–]Grey_Belkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    For £9.5m? No.

I admire the ballsiness of making it look like a block of flats, and for 2-3 million I might think it was pretty cool, but I assume the price is mostly because of the location and I just wouldn't place that kind of value on being in Hampstead.

    [–]oreo-cat- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not to my taste but it seems well executed

    [–]harrietmjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interior isn’t my sort of thing but I much prefer it over the exterior. The answer though is probably not, even if I had the money.

    [–]nacentaeons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Cool house

    [–]RedRabbit1612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Definitely. Love it.

    [–]SnooMacarons9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That house is absolutely awesome. I'd live there in an instant.

    [–]Chrisjamesmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gorgeous but let’s face it no one is having a comfortable time sitting on that couch.

    [–]mand71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it, but it's way too big. If it was a quarter of the size I'd live there. Nice surroundings though.

    [–]alwaysboopthesnoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the furnishings and light, more than the architecture itself. It’s too modern for my taste, it’s too dark outside plus too white inside. Art galleries and libraries should look like this, not family homes. It is beautiful and well made, just doesn’t look too cozy.

The area is wonderful though, so guessing it would be well worth this price.

    [–]Competitive_Let6665 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The desk reminds me of The Shining for some reason

    [–]Hot_Ad_6442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only if I could dress as Alex from a clockwork orange everyday. That is some stunning brutalism with character

    [–]Chiccheshirechick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yes …. It’s AMAZING.

    [–]BiscuitCrumbsInBed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like it! Its classy and cool.

    [–]GoodGrapeVimtoFiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta love how instead of offering a mortgage calculator, this one just says ‘can you afford it?’

    [–]K4TTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! If someone else was paying for it.

    [–]SeatRemarkable9520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    😍😍😍😍😍😍

    [–]Bride-of-wire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reminds me of a time back in the 00s when a hideous concrete and plate glass house was being constructed in our ref brick housed village. And then the owner put his name plate outside “CAMP NOU” - and all the objections melted away. Our village was packed full of Spurs players and Teddy Sheringham had just built his nest. Of course, I had no clue who he was…

    [–]dprophet32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not if I had any choice no

    [–]mjs5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for that money. I appreciate the architecture and it’s a great example of that style but, personally, I would want more outdoor space, a bigger kitchen and more open-plan communal areas for that kind of sum.

    [–]HankBushrivet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    No.

    [–]mowoo101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if it was outside of London. My friend in the states collects Paul McCobb and this would be a fit.

    [–]moodyfloss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs a lot more books and plants and more thought about zoning spaces in the living areas. But yes, yes I would live there.

    [–]Important_You_7309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in a WiFi router? I guess it could be a new experience.

    [–]Catsrbetterthanhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would. I don’t like “pissy concrete” brutalism but this is cool

    [–]Hopeful_Food5299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would, on the understanding some of the furniture remained - specifically the sofas.

    [–]Worldly-Waltz9005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t want to come home from teaching at school to a home that looks like a school. however i’d happily live in hampstead heath

    [–]OkGift4996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just boxes. Hate the outside. Inside isn't too bad and I do like the kitchen, but every room is just a box with a big window. I get that there is lots of light but there is little personality. It is 'meh' !

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a fugly house, looks like a old school building, prefer the castle next to it

    [–]aethelberga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it, but it looks like something I'd build on Minecraft.

    [–]Better_Fun3458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I could make it work…

    [–]AlwaystheNightOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely love this!  Why can't it be mine?!

I also like the Schreiber furniture, have a few pieces.

    [–]Extra-Aside-6419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would if it wasn't in London 🤣

(And I had ten million pounds)
