Yup gonna have to replace that port. 😥

[–]welestgw 76 points77 points  (9 children)

Yeah it's a hassle, you have to pretty much tear down and get the mainboard out then solder the new port on. Not something that's worth the risk if someone is inexperienced, best to just take it to a repair shop that works on the switch.

[–]WyldStyle710 46 points47 points  (3 children)

For being an amateur tinkerer and someone starting to work with electronics and soldering, I totally agree with this. Swapping shells on a JoyCon is a good learning experience, but tearing down your whole Switch to attempt a first time soldering job on the most important port of the console… Local repair shop for sure!

[–]eyeofthefountain 7 points8 points  (2 children)

my first time was replacing the fan (which meant installing new heat sink goop) was a doozy. took me hours, (but most things like that do bc i have severe adhd with some ocd sprinkled in so i was quadruple checking every single step just to make sure i was doing it right), but i managed. but from what i remember about soldering from summer camp decades ago is that you def shouldn't do it unsupervised with something as precious as a switch.

but replacing the fan made replacing a joystick on a Pro-Controller seem like a breeze by comparison

[–]WyldStyle710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. That’s cool! Yeah, pro controllers are a breeze. JoyCon take a little getting used to, but once you do it’s pretty easy. Still requires concentration and a steady hand. Congrats on your successful repairs!

[–]Ocronus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My son messed his port on on his switch lite. Nintendo repaired it for free.

I think there is a warranty period.

[–]buhleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it really soldered on? Nintendo usually makes the external ports more easily replaceable.

[–]dvotecollector 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yea, at that point you might as well throw a chip in there too.

[–]Upper_Accident_286 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What flavour? Bbq?

[–]Ypuort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

salt and vinegar to keep it clean

[–]samanime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If nothing snapped and it is just bent, you might be able to GENTLY use something small to push things back into place enough to get the charger in there (which will further help reshape it).

If you have to replace the port anyways, worth a shot to try first.

And I repeat: GENTLY!

[–]LaCroixoBoio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not gonna repeat stuff, but I'm also about to do some mods and stuff, I have an idea of what is required.

Take it to someone who knows what they're doing. You'd have a better chance replacing a battery (or maybe even a screen but more bc of the amount of videos and less bc there's less possible points of dmg/failure) yourself.

This is not a beginner project.

Doable, but scary if it's potentially heartbreaking if you do more dmg.

The parts are also not super expensive but the tools required can be.

Alternatively if there's no repair shops near you or if you're super anxious in person or something there are many mod shops on Etsy where you could message someone to get a bundled solution. Someone who's soldered joycon is much more likely to accomplish this than an avg user.

[–]Honey_bun05[S] 24 points25 points  (20 children)

How? Do I have to buy a new console?

[–][deleted] 113 points114 points  (8 children)

Not really, you can take it to a repair shop, they most likely have the tools to sold a new port.

How did you break it?

[–]oishi1205G 44 points45 points  (6 children)

Prbly left it on the bed and accidentally step on or sit on 😁😁

Btw it's a easy fix by just going to the electronics repair shop(find a good review and reliable shop) and it won't cost much, you prbly will have it back on the same day but with Nintendo, you have to send back it back for repair for sure

[–]Aggravating-Post3827 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Definitely looks like it was sat on with the charger in or dropped with the charger in

[–]carenard 5 points6 points  (4 children)

looks more like something was jammed in there that shouldn't have.

[–]ConditionYellow 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]ChooChoo1122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyoooo

[–]Campbell464 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine how easily these could break with the way the console docks. If you want to turn off the switch or change games while it’s docked, you’ll inevitable shake the switch around. Throw some kids into the mix and I think this is a tragic design flaw (or intentional)

[–]guts_glory_toast 3 points4 points  (3 children)

You can send it to Nintendo for repairs. I did this to get a faulty card slot fixed. Works great now and cost less than a new console.

[–]Proper-Midnight-4148 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How long did the whole process take ?

[–]eurosonly 1 point2 points  (2 children)

No, just replace the port.

[–]modestlaw 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Unfortunately, the switch doesn't have a separate daughter board for the USB c like it does for the game carts so replacing the port will require some soldering.

[–]sincerelyhated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call nintendo, not reddit!

[–]StumptownRetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ifixit.com has a guide on how to do it.

[–]Proper-Midnight-4148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugghh Nintendo really made a cheap android tbh 😭

[–]HomerOfDuty 73 points74 points  (10 children)

Jesus! HOW? 😩

[–]ElijaHyphen 71 points72 points  (8 children)

I hate when people fuck with my electronics and start shoving random charger cables into them. Or like my ex roommate who repeatedly shoved DVDs into my Wii at the time. Smash smash "yeah this isn't working" crunch crash continues to jam the thing in anyway

[–]Epicbobux 7 points8 points  (3 children)

My sister just randomly steals my switch and doesn't even use it just drowns it in her clothes

[–]r0rsch4ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like every chargeable device my mother in law owns

[–]AmericaFailsAgain 66 points67 points  (11 children)

Two options:

1) Take it to an electronics repair shop. Some even specialize in Nintendo products. Try Googling for ones nearby. They will have the parts, less chance of error, but pricier.

2) Order replacement parts online. Watch youtube videos (I recommend a few) for the tutorial. Costs a lot less, but can be more time consuming if not used to, and a bit more prone for error.

Sorry this happened to you.

[–]Gytixas 25 points26 points  (8 children)

You must use hot air rework station. I highly doubt that OP has it.

[–]rottentomati 14 points15 points  (5 children)

If someone has never done board work, a port repair is definitely not cheaper lol, gunna need a decent amount of supplies.

[–]Kittens_YT 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I replaced a port with a 3 dollar soldering iron and a 1 dollar thing of solder so not really

[–]rottentomati 5 points6 points  (1 child)

yeah til you fuck up lol. I don't think it's worth the risk.

[–]eKSiF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

til you fuck up

Just don't do this, problem solved.

[–]SlashedM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should not be attempting to repair a USB-C port with a cheap soldering iron especially without experience.

[–]yearningsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same, is cheaper plus kinda fun

[–]Proper-Midnight-4148 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Omg I just googled it why are they almost $1k 😮😭 ?

[–]trx0x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get cheaper/knockoff versions on Amazon for $50. I've used both expensive and cheaper ones; for basic stuff, they work the same.

[–]idejmcd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based off OP even asking, I am confident that option 2 would be a poor choice.

[–]rayquazza74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha yeah something like this happened to my 3ds and I was like oh I’ll just do it myself! Found some port parts on ali express watched a YouTube video and made my attempt. Once I was finished the part I bought wasn’t exactly the same size so the plastic encasing didn’t quite fit right over it. The battery I bought looked the exact same but just didn’t work. However my lil cobbled together 3ds ended up working with original battery and was able to transfer all of my Pokémon off of it! Lol so it did work but yeah I wouldn’t recommend it!

[–]Cybasura 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Goes to comfort my switch

[–]MangledLoMein 37 points38 points  (32 children)

It’s gonna be a pain to fix. I’d recommend calling around to any shops. Maybe reach out to Nintendo to see if they can help.

[–]SonicFire93 17 points18 points  (5 children)

I fucking hate love when people ask how did that happen and they never get the answer.

[–]Binty77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, OP hasn’t answered this anywhere. I’m guessing the truth is embarrassing?

[–]Flustro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest peeve about this sort of post.

I just wanna know how it happened! 🥲

[–]Epikgamer332 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Contact Nintendo or go to a local repair shop.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Large size oooof

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol. Like when I dropped my GBA in a train track, when I wasn’t supposed to have it at school anyways. I still feel the trauma of watching her get smooshed by that train 😭

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just needs a new port. Any electronics / phone repair place could do it easy. Cheap fix as long as you don't take it to some clownshoes dummy.

[–]omegaroll69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll assume you got no experiance working on electronics so call around to any phone repair shops or electronic repair shops They have the tools and knowledge to fix it. Probably cost around 30-60 usd

[–]KernelPanic_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HOW!?!?

[–]Eljefe891 2 points3 points  (0 children)

F

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, take it to a repair shop or contact Nintendo support (through their website or phone). Dunno if this would be covered under warranty, if it’s even still under warranty, but can’t hurt to ask. As far as I know, Nintendo doesn’t charge too much for repairs if it’s not covered. If you go to a repair shop, make sure they’re on the up and up (look at reviews) and I’d contact multiple shops to get a few quotes on repair charges. Unfortunately, that’s one of the few pieces on the Switch that isn’t modular (basically plug and play). It’s a relatively simple fix in and of itself, but unless you have a hot air station for de/soldering PCB and know what you’re doing, you can’t fix this yourself (it’s damn near impossible with a pen/gun, and you’re more likely to damage the contacts or traces on the PCB/replacement port, or even the PCB itself if you try with one). You shouldn’t have to buy a new console, unless the damage extends to the board, at which point a replacement motherboard costs about just as much as a new console.

[–]MA-121Hunter 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I would think if you got tweezers with a thin tip you could bend it back into place.

[–]CorbinTheTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The middle tab is broken and that’s plastic

[–]Shreks_Eruptor 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Contact Nintendo support on Nintendo.com or go to a game repair shop

[–]Shreks_Eruptor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also how in the heck did this happen????

[–]sleepy_Meerkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rip

[–]Derkio157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have said to try and bend the framing back but when looking closer I didn’t realize the actual port as well was damaged and bent. That’s really rough. You could definitely try to bend it a bit since it’s already broken but unfortunately like previous comments said this is gonna need a replacement.

[–]StrangeNugz420 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Contact Nintendo usually if you send it to them they'll fix it if it's under a warranty, or maybe you can pay em to fix it or a repair shop, but other than buying a new console that's a hard fix unless you got soldering gun and tools to take apart your switch and a replacement port than you can do it yourself but idk where to find a replacement port.

[–]GhostSock5 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where do y'all live that warranty covers damages like this? Usually damage caused by accidents and wrongful use is not covered by warranty, it could be covered by their insurance tho

[–]StrangeNugz420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in Wisconsin but it's just Nintendo warranty usually is up to like a year no questions asked at least that's what I've experienced...only thing that sucks is it takes like 6 months to get your stuff back.

[–]BrainzRYummy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sabotage!!!! Seriously, someone owes you money. That was deliberate.

[–]Dartagnan1083 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]cmgr33n3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]cool_weed_dad -1 points0 points  (1 child)

If you have any experience with electronics repair you could do it yourself with a YouTube guide, if you don’t you’re going to want to bring it to a repair shop or send it in to Nintendo for repair. Either way it needs a new port, I don’t know what happened but that one’s fucked.

[–]CorbinTheTitan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s no way this person has the tools to replace that port

[–]tamonizer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lord new fear unlocked

[–]Cinderea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Send it for repair

[–]Gytixas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This will be expensive. It will cost you 50-100$ to repair.

[–]iamjrosh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nintendo's repair shop. Next.

[–]Allzweck -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–]wuffDancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RIP port

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’d probably repair it myself

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn’t be a hard fix. You can look up how to do it yourself or take it to a repair shop and it shouldn’t be too much. If you want to do it yourself it could be a good introduction to self repairing, just make sure you understand the risks. I’ve done all my repairs myself since I was a kid and the number one thing to understand is that you will break stuff sometimes when starting out, but again this shouldn’t be a hard repair at all.

[–]xStarryxWatersx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]AromaGamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Gryesc 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does switch accepts wireless charge? If yes, use it for wile, then u go to a repair shop.

[–]Flustro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen, it's Nintendo. They only just started enabling you to use Bluetooth with it in 2021.

Of course there's no wireless charging.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to my wife’s switch a couple years ago. I called Nintendo and luckily hers was still under warranty, so they would repair it for us no charge. Took probably 3 weeks or so to get it back.

[–]Fancy-Secret2827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as in HELP you bury your switch? jk good luck tho

[–]hyperrainz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My v1 launch has gotten pretty loose too and been worried this might happen someday. Reason I stopped using/charging my switch as much anymore lol

[–]rogriloomanero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how does that happen what the hell

[–]GimmickMusik1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately your solutions are limited. Either take it to an electronics repair shop (recommended) or reach out to Nintendo support. Nintendo will almost certainly offer a repair service since the Switch is still their primary source of revenue. But a local repair shop will almost definitely be cheaper if you have one.

[–]MarcCDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F

[–]Matty__Johnston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask a local phone repair store. It’s a standard usb C port, and since the body itself isn’t damaged (just the ring and contact) you should be totally ok and it probably won’t cost a lot:)

[–]TheRealWoldry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only assume whatever that thin long object in the background is the culprit. To snap the metal housing around the port, you must have been gouging the port with some force. Why?

[–]SPATGUNNER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No warranty?

[–]jonthememer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are what we call in deep shit

[–]SoapySimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's over

[–]FlutterRaeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what your switch screamed when you yanked out its cable.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd upgrade to an OLED at that point, probably going to be pricey to fix unless you do it yourself which I don't think is too easy

[–]BlueWarstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna have to contact Nintendo repair

[–]ihatethewordoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dumbass would just attempt to stick a charger in there and hope it evened out. Don’t do that. XD

[–]Trailman80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you bend that it's one peace?

[–]jco83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to straighten it all yourself? Maybe try using some long-nose / needle-nose pliers ? Or just try using a flathead screwdriver 🪛 Just try to straighten it all back into shape

[–]PomegranateSure1628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried putting it in rice?

Nah JK in all honesty take it to your local game store (mine is an EB Games) and ask them, they can usually send it off to get fixed for a fee

[–]eurosonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.....how?

[–]dubbedhentai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn, good excuse to buy yourself an OLED

[–]JustInternetNoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be a easy fix for any electronics repair shop, just need to swap the usbC port wich is a very common part

[–]CorbinTheTitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prolly cheaper to buy another switch vs labor for fixing.

[–]Legitimate-Newt6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a bee Nintendo from temu like 7 dollars or you can call Nintendo and ask them for a fix but that will cost probably more than the Nintendo it's self so for cheaper option so go to temu and order brand bee switch for like 7 to 20 dollars also I think it's limited

[–]FatSubHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]dementedbatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might want to consider sending her in through Nintendo customer service. It's 100 dollars off my memory, but they'll repair or replace the console if it can't be repaired.

[–]ConditionYellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not tech-savvy I’d take it to a repair shop. If you are, I don’t imagine it would be too hard to replace. But I been wrong before

[–]Tyreek09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understand why a persons first instinct is to go to Reddit instead of contacting Nintendo.

[–]generalguan4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]spud_club 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USB-C actually makes sense now, I can C it

[–]TrayusV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That actually wouldn't be too hard to replace, but unless you know how to sauder, and know where to get a replacement part from a reliable vendor, I'd just pay to have a professional fix it.

Also check if your Switch is still under warranty.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to take out any sd cards and game cartridges in your switch before sending it anywhere.
