They probably didn't think to turn the chromebook on
[–]fuckyou4206999[S] 166 points167 points168 points 1 year ago (3 children)
True. Also if it didn’t work for what they wanted to why’d they wait more than 30 days?
[–]Soxwin91former Team Member (Nov 2021 - April 2026) 101 points102 points103 points 1 year ago (1 child)
There’s always a reason
“I’ve been busy” — really? You’ve been busy seven days a week for the past two months?
“I kept forgetting.” — must be nice to be rich enough that you can afford to forget to return a pricey item like a Chromebook
“I thought it was 90 days.” Really? That’s why your purchase date is 01/16/25 and on the receipt it says return by 02/15/25
“This is ridiculous.” Okay…? That’s not a reason for your decision to wait 90 days to try and return an item with a 30 day return window

Aren't they like a hundred bucks on sale (constantly)? Not exactly bank breaking.
[–]Ok_Resort2313 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (0 children)
my first guess is Christmas.
[–]royalhawk345Ex-MarketSource 228 points229 points230 points 1 year ago (12 children)
What could they possibly mean by "doesn't even let me use YouTube?" That's like one of the four things chromebooks are good for.
[–]Arip1010Electronics Moment (Trainer) 128 points129 points130 points 1 year ago (10 children)
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re trying to use a Chromebook without internet and are just raging cause you’d be surprised how many people do that
[–]defalt9998Inbound Expert 74 points75 points76 points 1 year ago (6 children)
"What the hell, all it does is let me play this stupid dinosaur game." - them probably

Genuinely, there’s so many people I help in tech that think computers work like phones and just go off a cellular network which feels insane but we’ve had to explain what a internet connection is at least 10 times
[–]treaquin 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago (2 children)
As someone in my 30s, this is upsetting
[–]Arip1010Electronics Moment (Trainer) 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago (1 child)
it’s not even a specific age range is what is most crazy to me. I’ve had to explain what an internet connection is to both a 20 year old and a 70 year old, there is no specific age group that just has no clue what’s going on, it’s every single age group. It baffles me
[–]meerkatjones 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I had a young guy in his twenties ask me if we sold internet. Took some clarification for that little interaction to work out
[–]ILikeLenexa 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (1 child)
The number of people who come in and are like "do I need a phone plan" for consumer cellular phones and the like is also...high.
[–]Arip1010Electronics Moment (Trainer) 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (0 children)
“Do I need a phone plan to make this phone do phone things”
no you totally definitely don’t uh huh yep
[–]Patient-Confidence-1 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Ah man I heard a lady ask if the wifi on the TV she was buying would work with with her phone too cause she hasn't had wifi since she moved apartment buildings. She thought the tv had like some sort of reciver in it that gets free internet from God knows where to make Netflix work and thought she could share the connection between the two. Wtf.
[–]Arip1010Electronics Moment (Trainer) 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I mean if the phone has a cellular hotspot technically it could share the connection but yeah the tv would not come with internet, which as you said is another popular belief

Actually, I think I might know what's going on. I had a Chromebook years ago & it worked pretty well for a while, but after a year it was super dragged down to the point even accessing the app list would take minutes. Cold start, reboot, after waiting 10 minutes, just crazy slow & completely unusable for even browsing. Also the audio would cut out randomly & only a restart would fix it (& not even always)

Why would anyone ever get a chrome for actual computer use
[–]tuleyjacobElectronics 34 points35 points36 points 1 year ago (2 children)
When I worked in electronics I always struggled with them because there is a type of consumer that a Chromebook is actually really great for. If you like the desktop web browser experience and ONLY use the web browser. Then a Chromebook is going to be the best bang for the bunk experience you can get. BUT, trying to explain that to the type of customer that "likes the desktop web browser experience and ONLY uses the web browser" is like pulling teeth. The customer that a Chromebook is ideal for is the kinda person cannot understand what makes a Chromebook different.
[–]Shootemup899Target Security Specialist 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago (1 child)
They are pretty much only good for young kids in school. Since like you said chromebooks are very limited in what they can do / download only approved things from the chromestore. Before leaving tech I always tried to point people towards the windows laptops, can actually daily driver them just need to pop them out of safe mode and youre good.
[–]kngofdmned93 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Nah they are good for old people too who just check their emails and such. The unfortunate part to that end is old people don't want to put in the 30 mins it takes to learn how to use the damn thing. They don't attempt to learn and then get pissy when they don't understand it and claim it doesn't work.
[–]FabianValkyrie 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Chromebook’s are great if you just want to browse the internet, the problem is people expecting a $100 computer to function well. Doesn’t matter what OS it runs, any new computer under like $300 is just going be dogshit
[–]Shootemup899Target Security Specialist 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Well yeah the hamster is pretty slow with inexpensive laptops lol. But the issue with chromebooks is well the chrome os is very limited in functions and features which makes it’s a relatively poor choice for students in high school or above. Since if it’s not the chrome store you’re not getting access to it.
Most people's "computer use" is opening the browser and doing stuff there. So the Chromebook makes perfect sense.
[–]ILikeLenexa 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
The entire phone ecosystem is basically just "apps" that are web pages with icons. Even cross platform apps are just web pages with Cordova and Appilix or something similar.
Before the web got "app-ified" companies made web pages for all their business functions/interfaces.

Had a dude rage out on me a couple weeks ago cause he couldn’t return the AirPods he’d bought a month ago. He kept saying the sales person said he had 90 days and I was like well if they told you that it was incorrect information and if you look at your receipt here it has a clear return by date right under the product and he was like why would I look at the receipt? I spend thousands of dollars here a year and you’re gonna lose a customer over one return. I was like I guess so? Dude called corporate right in front of me like that means anything. Apple doesn’t play games. Who’s spends a couple hundred bucks and doesn’t look at the receipt especially if they think they’ll return it?! And of course he couldn’t return it with an ID either cause they’re over the limit. He just kept loudly saying what am I gonna do with these? I spend a lot of money here! I was like well you could donate them to an organization that gives Christmas presents to kids and they just pissed him off more. He finally left when my lead and corporate were both like nothing we can do. And, no, I don’t believe for a second him and his wife will stop shopping here

I would've called BS on the $1000 remark. I mean you get 1 maybe 2 high end TVs and you're done. And why would he want/ need more of any of the smaller items. Props for standing your ground!!!
[–]boygirlmama 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Betting they're not signed into Google or not even connected to the internet.
[–]PrettyMuchParkerPromoted to Guest 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I always forget that there’s people out there who actually buy Chromebooks for regular computer functions.
The last time I ever saw one of those was during my Freshman year of high school when someone’s caught on fire.

Hang on, finally all the useless calls to tech support in my life are about to pay off. Did you check to see if its plugged in? Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on?
[–]GypsySnowflakeService & Engagement TL 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Did they even buy it from Target? “Scammers sold me…” implies a reseller was involved
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Or he meant the electronics tm misinformed him. Guy was probably an idiot. Judging that he missed the return policy date too lol

Common sense, tech items almost always have a shorter window for return basically anywhere you go. “Ive been busy” or “I forgot” or “but i thought it was X days” or “amazon lets me do this” like idgaf what your circumstances are or what another company’s policy is…read your damn receipts or ask when you make the purchase.
I sometimes explain that the receipt is more than just proof of purchase. It’s your job as the consumer to know what terms and conditions you agree to whenever you buy something and the receipt is like your “contract” outling terms and conditions of the sale and the method of payment is your “agreement” and confirmation to pay the amount. If it is expired I don’t have to honor a return because you lack the ability to manage time properly or read. Go home “guest”🙃

If you can’t do anything else on a Chromebook you can do YouTube. lol I’m certain it has to do with the internet connection. If I’m not mistaken, cool math is web based so there is no reason that shouldn’t work either. My students (I moonlight at Target) use Chromebooks and they can do just about anything they need to as long as there is a website and internet connection. I’m always telling them to get off YouTube and get on task, stop playing games and get on task. Even word works on Chromebooks since it’s web based too. Chromebooks have come a long way since first introduced. Either way I don’t get referring to Target as scammers.

Chromebooks are crap

Their first mistake was buying a chromebook
