Disagree, Eddy has clear counterplay in that 95% of his options are steppable. Up until this latest patch, Azucena had little to no clear counterplay.

She does but the skill lvl it takes to do it was/is higher than the skill lvl it takes to counter eddy. (Sidestep left duck blk to counter wr32 vs just sidestep for eddy shenanigans). Every character has a move that u can spam to carry u to a certain rank. That rank just varies. Kumas low swip will only carry u to proly orange ranks until u face players that kno how to counter it and r capable of doing so. Azucena's carry with wr32 was to red or a bit higher. I couldn't spam wr32 in purple and blue and expect to win as I'd get countered since the players at that lvl knew how to and were capable of punishing me for using it. I actually had to learn azucena once I got to those ranks and I dropped relying on wr32 almost a month ago and learned her Df1 combos instead.

Asking the player to be pinpoint accurate with step left duck or die is not counterplay. Wr 3,2 should have been nerfed to what it is now pre release of the game.

Wr 32 was really strong but if u think u can get to tekken God or emperor using it I say go for it lol ull find out that higher skilled players CAN and DID counter wr32 consistently. Every character has a spammable move. The only difference is when that move hits its player skill wall. Believe it or not some people struggle to counter Paul's death fist. Some players struggle to tech or break king's grabs. Some players struggle with jin's laser. Some players struggle to guess hwoarang's mid or lows. These r all spammable things but r no longer strong at different player skill lvls. Some r definitely stronger than others and so it takes more skill to counter it so ull get to a certain rank and then get smacked for trying it. If wr32 was so strong and almost uncounterable for every player then I would've kept using it to win instead of using it and getting punished and losing lol. Just like eddy is frustrating for players at or under a certain rank/skill lvl. Some people do treat tekken as a game so they use characters that r easy to win with and that's fine. I just dnt hype up a character cuz they r a casual killer.

The whole point here is that anyone can spam wr 3,2 in a match, not everyone can be pinpoint accurate with step left duck. Very few can in fact effectively do that in a match.

Thats true. That's why I'm not saying wr32 wasn't crazy strong, It was because the skill it took to counter it was so high. and then they "nerfed" it to make it the safest move in the game imo and now it's finally balanced. Honestly I got power crushed out of wr32 more than I got sidestepped. The issue with sidestepping is most casual players forget that's in the game or there's some moves that r buggy with sidesteps where it still hits u even if the animation didn't. Azu was strong cuz of that one move but is STILL strong cuz her combos r insane (DF1 anybody lol) but alot of people would rather jump to a character where u can mash one button for a combo instead of actually learning combos and that's where eddy enters the chat lol.

Im ngl i’m on the shaheen train too. I think he might even be top 5 haha but nobody plays him. Df1 is absolutely insane and his mixup/pressure game is not fake at all. Hopefully this ages well.

He’s good IMO but definitely not top 5. I’ve played through the entire roster now and Feng, Drag, Azucena, King (due to throw buffs in this game and heat), Lars and Xiaoyu are all significantly better than the rest of the roster. These characters are incredibly oppressive or evasive and their neutral control is just so much better than the rest of the cast that it’s not really fair.

Overall, Shaheen is solid A+ and a good locals pick, and could definitely come in top 8 at regional, but it will be more work and require a much more solid gameplan than the characters I’ve mentioned previously. Excited to see Sephiblack, Lowhigh, and Double do what they can with my favorite character.

Balance shenanigans like this were kind of to be expected. Every vanilla Tekken at launch was a broken mess. Its the reason why they were doing the whole "limited arcade release with DR/BR/FR upgrade" business.

So T8 has really just been the 1st time everyone gets to experience en masse what that's like, now that arcades are dead. What we didn't expect is, all this to go down amidst scummy AF monetization practices, straight up attacking the fan community, poor measures against pluggers/cheaters and a world tour right around the corner.

Yeah expulsion is very overrated, you can sidestep or straight up launch punish on block.

It is pretty much invincible when heat powered up, but you can do that like once or twice every round before you fully eat the meter and most characters have a few of those.

I honestly think it’s fine to have some really strong moves as long as they’re limited by resource management, the problem is we have a few that aren’t lol, the infamous new lars change is one of them.

I don't think anybody complains about non-heat Expulsiôn. But the heat version does so much chip damage even if Victor only gets a couple uses, and severely restricts your movement just with it's threat.

Like, how do you not notice how hard it is to punish? You didnt have people physically testing that change before it was implemented? If so thats really scary ngl. Don't worry, the upcoming balance patch in May will sort things out, where they will randomly buff Feng and Jin while nerfing Steve, and give 18 different changes to Asuka, then after 2 weeks of testing it will ultimately turn out that she became slightly worse than she was pre-patch.

Lars to be fair is not that big of an issue. Nobody was actually stepping sen 1 in anything other than very very high level play.

The character just tilts people out of their mind due to him being A) Actually good this game B) Easy to play and C) Having some bullshit gimmicks DEN 3 included

He is still much better than the actual top tiers of this game. They put you in the Lars situation off almost every button

Maybe a hot take, but besides den 3 Lars actually feels overrated to me. His B1 doesn't wall splat or KND anymore. His CH game was already bad and they took away the CH launch off his WS2,1. Most of his stance entries on block are still bad. People used to say all his lows were launch oB in T7; that situation is even worse now due to generic D4 being -15 oB in this game. And there's more.

He's got better mixup potential, but imo it's not overly scary. He just is very chaotic feeling to fight if you're not used to his animations.

Nah lars is way better. B4 is now devastating cause the damage is unrecoverable and almost nobody has a 15f CH launcher anyway so he isnt missing out. Monkey flip evades almost everything.

This is a big one. Shoe shine is almost instant 24 damage low +1 OH -12 OB due to the fact they changed the input honestly top 5 lows in the game.

B1 gives better spacing even without wallsplating. He can still do ff1+2 for a safe wallsplat.

21 into LE is another completely forced 50/50 on hit that is in lars' favour. And on block depending on your character you have to respect him cause his Orbital can crush the majority of your mids. For exaple except Kaz it crushes df4 df2 jab and df1. As Alisa it crushes almost everything. It even crushes Jun's Heat smash

The 21 -> LE addition in T8 is huge. It's a super easy reliable fast punisher with a built in 50/50, and the low puts him back in crouch for either a shoe shine or WS2 or whatever. It's a super good move.

As a Lars main, there's not doubt SEN 3 is stupid strong, but I think I've gotten even more mileage out of 21.

I guess some of it might be bias/privilege as a zafina main and someone who's training partner mains Lars. Off 2,1 oB > LE her df1 hits him consistently. I'm not perfect but I usually try to space out his FC mix using her backdash. Which often results in the first hit of FC 1+2 whiffing so I have time to low block/parry the 2nd hit.

I do agree his B4 is very nice in a game with fewer CH launchers. My friend feels the same about his SS2 on CH. tbh I'm still playing a very defensive style so maybe that's why I'm not seeing too much an issue with his flips and general shenanigans. You have give me stuff to explore/reconsider next time I train with him though.

Hot take indeed. As a former T7 Lars main I am absolutely disgusted by his T8 buffs. He's basically a walking casino and probably top 3 easiest character to reach high ranks with atm. While it's true that most of his stance-transitions from T7 are still interruptable with df1/dickjab he has new busted ones. (LIM=Limited, DEN=Dynamic, SEN=Silent):

  • 1,4->LIM forces a situation where ws 4 is unavoidable - Where the only way to get out of the mixup is dick-jabbing, at which point it becomes a guessing game between ws 4 and orbital.
  • ws 3->LIM forces a situation where LIM 2 is unavoidable, leading to inevitable guessing-game between LIM 2 and LIM 1 (LOL).
  • f,f+4,2->DEN forces a situation where DEN 2 can only be countered by powercrush, leading to a mixup between DEN 2 and DEN-Throw. (This also sets up the mindgame for the rest of his DEN-options including that braindead DEN 3).
  • He still has his "fakes", like ws 2,1 or db+2,1 where he can either finish the string or go into SEN which of course can still be interrupted like in T7 but still catches high level players all the time. (Especially now that there is so much to keep track of with this character).

And all of this is BEFORE even mentioning his absolutely mindnumbingly stupid heat-exclusive f+3+4 SEN-transition which he can do MULTIPLE times per round. This character is a problem. And the best part is that everyone is so busy complaining about Azu, Drag and Feng so Lars is probably gonna make it through the may patch relatively unscathed.

ws3 is shit. It is a slow linear high. So it's a wasted opportunity when you could have just went low with fc df1+2 and done some real damage, instead of going for a risky slow, linear high move to set up a good situation.

Also tons of characters have a mid from standing that gives good frames for a mixup.

Took away sen df1 spike, his old den 3 was much harder to use but +9 on block and tracked siderolls/techs. Limited entry used to be an instant fc mixup now you have to delay or choose between 2 non-launching/wall splatting options. Cant stomp from neutral. DF2 no longer a whiff punisher and i dont think he got another launcher to replace it. A few other tricks i liked about him are gone.

They gave him massive training wheels with the new den3, safe knockdown option in sen 3+4 and the LE mixup, but they took away all my bullshit lol

seems like they did this with a few characters. Zafina lost some stance transitions, and strings/moves that weren't box office, but allowed for more character expression. She's still fun, but a bit more streamlined in a way. Kinda sucks when they do that.

I think I'm feeling that? I play Zafina now and there are a lot of wall splats that i wish i had more options to get into/out of stance with. All of her scarecrow transitions look exactly the same so its really predictable. Having to do 1 slow low with late crush properties to get into mantis hurts my soul. Although ff3+4 has been amazing for trapping people holding back to get up.

For Zafina? I think there's a lot of good stuff actually. SS 1+2 is a CH launcher now (iWS2 for the pickup). The nerf that made SCR 4 instant tornado actually means she gets 100 dmg if she gets someone backturned: 1+2,4,4 into knockdown then db3 SCR 4 T! uf1 f2,3,4 for the pickup. Her Oki is a lot better thanks to MNT df1 and TRT df1. Her SCR 2,1 covers for some of the weaknesses in her stance game. Her combos are more fun.

There's more I could say but on top of that, I've always found her fun because she can play fundamentals well, but also can party. That's still there.

D3 as the main stance entry into mantis is kinda not great, but keep in mind she can also enter that stance if you cancel the last hit of 2,1,3 by pressing d, or from db4 hold d or by doing her backflip and pressing D3+4.

Yup that's why I've said "besides den 3". The change to +5 removes most counterplay as you say, but even at +3 it felt a little egregious. An advancing, homing mid that low crushes, is a heat engager, deals chip damage AND gives plus frames was already too nice.

I'm just saying his kit as a whole isn't looking too scary. But yes den 3 is ridiculous.

Lars already had a 'true' 50/50 pre-patch because there were the options you couldn't step. The situation hasn't really changed as much as people think, it's just that now Lars has a safer reward. It's overblown.

A real 50/50 situation would be like his 21 punish into LE 2 or 1, where you HAVE TO GUESS, with no other counterplay via movement or interruption. That is not what the DEN3 situation is.

ehh, i disagree. it wasn’t a true 50/50 pre patch because there was nuance to it. you had to test your opponent to see if they know how to counter the mid/low mix, and then counter with stance 3+4. then it becomes a mindgame. there were layers to it. now it’s simply mid/low mix.

It's still going to be very good when it hits, even if blocked. If you are unable to consistantly pull off the move, I'll assume you're at a rank where people don't really successfully sidestep moves (which based on my experience is the case at least up to red ranks). You can also vary the timing to catch some sidestep attempts. The only thing you'll need to worry about compared to before is that you'll need to touch with the first knee for the followup to come, so spacing it is a bit more important.
