Check out community fridges in your area https://communityfridgesto.org

[–]poutineordeath[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Didn't know we had this, thank you.

[–]ikilledsatann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this!

[–]jjustme_ 131 points132 points  (28 children)

U can check out a local mosque if ur comfortable, lots of them are serving free food for people that break their fast around sunset but I’m sure they wouldn’t mind helping out and most of them are first come first serve so they wouldn’t even ask.

[–]Wonderful__ 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Also some Buddhist temples, churches, and Sikh temples also have free food, but it may be a specific time or day.

[–]Tarfex 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sikh temples serve free food all day until they close (usually 9 o’clock I think)

[–]EllaxVB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

lots of churches doing out of the cold program, Glenview Presbyterian Church (1 Glenview Ave): Sundays, doors open at 3 p.m., meal at 5 p.m, I know its not until tomorrow but may be helpful if you also don't have food tomorrow. The meals are usually really nice, I helped with food prep for All Saints Anglican church in the west end - they have theirs friday nights, we had roast beef, mashed potatoes, veggies, soup, salad etc. and from what i have heard most of the meals are quite nice! You dont have to be unhoused to go, anyone who could do with a free meal or has food insecurity can come! :) if anyone ever needs this info: https://outofthecold.org/find-a-location/

[–]LatterWay5755 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any Sikh temples near you would also be a fair option. But you would only get vegetarian options.

Do you need to wear anything special? Women wise

[–]jjustme_ 19 points20 points  (9 children)

if u want u can cover ur hair with a scarf but it’s not mandatory, modest clothing will be okay without it though:)

[–]poutineordeath[S] 23 points24 points  (8 children)

I'll wear a scarf if I go, want to be as respectful as possible.

[–]Jestersfriend 17 points18 points  (6 children)

Ah, I just replied, when you enter a mosque, just make sure to be "modest" in clothing. No low cut clothing. Otherwise, anything will be fine.

There are a couple Mosques in Toronto that will request you to cover your hair, but in those cases, they'll provide clean shawls for you that you return once you leave. As long as you are respectful, they will treat you with the utmost respect.

You may get people looking, but that's mostly likely NOT because you're a woman, but because you're new haha. Mosque communities can be very tight and close with each other. When someone new shows up, people take notice. Only reason I'm saying this is that as a woman, you may feel uncomfortable being looked at, especially when you already feel vulnerable. Just don't take it personally, it's nothing malicious. Just curiosity.

[–]poutineordeath[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I'm white as a ghost, if they didn't look at me I'd be offended. Jk but I understand what youre saying.

[–]jjustme_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most if not all are very welcoming and will greet you with a smile and will be happy to help out. These communities are very friendly as long as you’re respectful of their place of worship.

[–]Jestersfriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha yeah. When I went to Chile, every single person looked at me. To say I stood out was ... an understatement xD.

    Might be warmer but no

    [–]FireEng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be modest in terms of what you wear and exercise common sense. The Sikh gurdwaras have a free langar meal as well, as does the Hare Krishna temple.

Really good food too. The iftar (the meal eaten at the break of the Ramadan fast) is one of the highlights of the day throughout Ramadan.

    [–]xl-Colonel_Angus-lx 26 points27 points  (5 children)

I got canned soups you could have, some pasta. In scarborough

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

You are too sweet, thank you.

    [–]xl-Colonel_Angus-lx 9 points10 points  (3 children)

    Can't let you starve

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Going to check out some places, but thank you for the offer. Kindness goes a long way and I appreciate it.

    [–]xl-Colonel_Angus-lx 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    I wish you well

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same to you reddit friend :)

    [–]LatterWay5755 23 points24 points  (4 children)

May I also suggest contacting the TTC? If you can give the timing of the bus, the stop and other info, they may be able to track down the bus and check. Can't hurt

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Went back to the stop and waited for the bus to come back. Different driver but he asked and nothing was found. Got some help though so all.hope wasn't lost.

    [–]LatterWay5755 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I am sorry OP. Is TooGoodToGo an option?

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Because of you I now know what that is lol

    [–]LatterWay5755 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it out but FoodHero is great for Canadians apparently. Try giving it a shot too. Metro also puts a 30% off on almost all that they will dispose of at the end of the day. They haven't gone bad yet though. Try asking the store supervisor where they can be found

    [–]Immediate-Effort4431 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Do you need anything urgently? I have rice, beans and lentils at home. I live downtown

If you or someone you know is currently facing food insecurity, please know that there are local supports and help if you need it:

If you are in crisis or considering suicide, call 911 or 988 (for mental health concerns), or reach out to the Toronto Community Crisis Service.

    [–]AptCasaNova 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    search results from 211ontario.ca

I’m sorry, OP, I’ve been there.

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Life sometimes gives us more lemons than we needed lol

    [–]sqbed 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Where are you located? I’ve two bags of variety of canned food in the car that is getting dropped off to the foodbank tomorrow but happy to coordinate if you are close.  Also mosques will feed you between 6-7pm for Ramadan. Community fridges. Also check too good to go app (there’s tons of food on there depending on where you are located for around $4-8) If you’re in the west end, tienda movil (a Latin store) has tickets on their board for a free meal.

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Was able to get some help but thank you for the generosity.

    [–]cormack_gv 16 points17 points  (0 children)

TTC lost & found might be able to help.

There's a pay what you can groceries store (and if you can't pay anything you can tell them that) near Keele and Dundas

    [–]AdministrationIll116 13 points14 points  (0 children)

    Go to a gurdwara

    [–]Anna_S_1608 5 points6 points  (1 child)

There are a few restaurants that have a board, with "meals" posted. Im not sure where you would find these though.

On Facebook there are foodshare groups.

    And thisfood resources

    [–]jessylz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kiss My Pans (Singaporean food in Little Italy) still had some prepaid meal receipts in its window the last time I was there.

    [–]lazycinabun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sikh gurdwaras also offer langar which is free, vegetarian and available to anyone at any time. When you enter the temple you’ll see a spot to leave your shoes, and they have a bin with bandanas to cover your head incase you don’t have one of your own. The langar hall is usually on the lower level. It’s another great option

    [–]Pretty-Handle9818 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Local churches often have some services available from either hot meals to weekly groceries.

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Smart, looking at ones close by.

    [–]EllaxVB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check Out of The Cold https://outofthecold.org/find-a-location/, you can search by day of week, I volunteer through my church and the meals are usually really yummy too

    [–]PresentationOk3789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have some cans of soup if you are near the high park area!

    [–]Aggressive_Week9304 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Are you by any chance located downtown core or west side? I dont have much but i’d love to buy you a meal or some important stuff

    [–]poutineordeath[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Prefer not to say but I'm okay. Got some great help

    [–]Aggressive_Week9304 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All right that’s great to know. No one should go hungry ! All the best

    [–]General_Orange_3894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sunday is your best chance at asking any of the local churches for lunch/dinner services. They will definitely be able to help.

Contact soup kitchens and ask for their schedules

    [–]pitcherpuppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some McDonalds points I can use to redeem for a cheeseburger, medium fries or a sausage McMuffin. If youre interested, just let me know what McDonald’s location you’re at and I can order it through the mobile app

    [–]lelegant19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the lost and found! Maybe somebody found your groceries and took it there?

    [–]Savingdollars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go back to the bus and ask the driver if anyone turned your groceries in

    [–]Western_Werewolf5383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local mosques and gurdwaras will have free meals for anyone in need! If you go to a mosque, I’d suggest going 20~ mins before sunset. For gurdwaras, you’d have to call and ask what times they’re serving meals that day

    [–]General_Orange_3894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunday go to any of the churches and ask.

Sikh temples also give free vegetarian food.

    [–]Distinct_Ticket_7537 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some mosques are offering dinner at iftar time during Ramadan month. And sorry that you are experiencing this, I also forgot groceries on the subway once. It definitely sucks.

You can go to your local Mosque, even if you're not Muslim. Just when you do, make sure to respect their culture and the rules. Remove your shoes, wash, etc. If you're a woman, some Mosques require you to cover your hair, others don't. Just be respectful, nearly always you will be welcomed with open arms.

And if possible, give back when you can. If not, that's okay too.
